Disco Dog Quartz is great for sure-I’ve owned a large crystal since I was little and it’s still going strong-but I have to admit the Granite species has grown on me recently. They’re not quite as crystalline and flashy, but the amount of morphs they come in is pretty impressive. They’re also not too sharp, so handling is a breeze assuming your specimen is small enough!

Had my 1st snake bite today and it was a cal king. The bite itself did not hurt one bit (and this guy had it's mouth around my WHOLE THUMB). It didn't come off with getting water splashed on it's face, so someone had to get it off me with a credit card. That hurt a wee bit, but it was by no means unbearable.

I put my kingsnake's food in his enclosure while he is out exploring. I was warned by his previous owner that he was very food aggressive. She also said she had a hard time getting him off her daughter. The pet store he originally came from hated him. I got him when he was 3 and he has been an absolute angel so far. As a juvenile though he was flighty. I lost sight of him for a second while I was washing my bathtub and found him in the basement 3 months later.

Kingsnake's are my favorite. I have 2, an albino Cali King and a Gray Banded Kingsnake. No issues with them trying to eat me. They will try to eat the first thing that comes in the cage, but I just make sure it's never my hand. I usually just put the snake hook and wiggle in front of them to let them know it's not feeding time. And then I take them out and they're great.

I recently got a Cali Kingsnake, and he is awesome! He definitely loves eating (my hand too), but he is starting to figure it out. Most of the time he won’t bite me, but even if he does it’s not the type of bite most people think of when it comes to snakes. It’s very gentle and doesn’t hurt (he also isn’t a striker or anything, so it’s very slow, almost like a test nibble). I love how he is not afraid of anything and is very calm anytime I handle him. They are absolutely BEAUTIFUL too. They are definitely kings and they know it!

New comment on old video, but just figured it'd be good info to add: All the 'getula complex' kingsnakes (MBK, Cali, Desert, Speckled, Eastern, Florida) (scare quotes because pretty sure getula complex is an outdated term) are going to score about the same on Clint's scale, with the main variation being availability and maybe upfront cost with trendy ones like MBKs. Some get slightly bigger than others but still in the 'nice size' range of under 6ft, all have similar food response, exact husbandry parameters vary a tiny bit but equally easy, all are very hardy and tough and share a laid-back demeanor as adults.
So if you're looking into a speckled or eastern king, this video applies for sure! If looking into a desert king, they're more closely related to MBKs so see that video. But honestly, this video applies to MBKs as well, which are also close relatives (Desert, Cali and MBK all intergrade/hybridize in the wild where their ranges overlap, which is why you'll see MBKs with a faint Desert or Cali kingsnake pattern sometimes even in the pet trade).

That's so funny that you say that. I don't have any pet snakes (yet), and while I adore ball pythons, I've heard they can be notoriously picky eaters, and that's my biggest hesitation about getting one. I think I'd rather have a snake that might get a little overzealous about food and try to eat me from time to time than worry about a snake not wanting to eat. However, the ball python's personality/handleability can't be beat. They've got to be the cutest and sweetest snakes around.

High feeding response makes easier and also on the biting once they get more mature they do get better. Spend a couple of years with one close by and they'll become climatized to you so are easier to handle and the biting becomes less. So less I kiss mine on the head every day without worry.

Had one of these as a kid. Very cuddly but also very mischievous! quite the escape artist, wrapped himself around my mom's purse once and gave her quite a scare LOL. Only bit me once and it was really my fault; he was moody right after a shed and I should have let him be! I've seen them in the wild twice. just beautiful. Love these guys - instant nostalgia

Honestly the California kingsnake was my first choice! I love the coloration and how active they are. Plus as a newbie knowing your snake is going ALWAYS want to eat is beyond helpful. I got talked into a boa though 😂 mainly because I realized I was willing to make the long term commitment and I was already comfortable around larger animals. Thank you for another wonderful video!! Btw a pet rock I'd a good alternative as well!

I never really thought of myself getting a snake. I am more into the lizards myself. But this video and California king snake completely changed my mind. I plan on getting one sometime in the future. Thank you Clint.
P.s it's not that I didn't like snakes or was scared of them. I have always liked them, but none have peaked my interest as pets, until now.

I met a baby California King once. She was adorable. I held her and she was very curious and tried to slither up into my sleeve. Just overall adorable. And a beautiful, striking pattern.
Unfortunately, she had to be rehomed when her owner’s no longer felt comfortable handling her as she reached adult size. Do your research, people! Make sure you know how big your pet will get.

My Cali King looks just like the video'd animal, and might be the most docile friendly animal on the planet, He comes to my classrooom and is held by 180 students and he's turned some kids afraid of snakes into appreciating them. he's never bitten nor showed aggression and just cruises around and hangs out. Love having him. Unlike most kings, he isn't a voracious eater, which may contribute to the lack of biting? IDK

I get to take one of these boys home from a rescue. My local pet store (they're awesome with reptiles!) Rescued 7 snakes. My boy is the only Cali kingsnake from the rescue. The whole lot got left in a garage for a month and abandoned. He's ~5 years old, he has a couple minor wounds on his back that are healing over, almost gone.

The fact that these guys are escape artists and hungry snakes is no joke.
My roommates cali kingsnake once escaped her enclosure, and made its way INTO my ball pythons enclosure and tried to eat it.
I knew because the scales on the head of my ball python were scratched, and one scale had come off. Plus it had burrowed for the first time ever and was clearly very stressed.
So yeah, be sure to make the enclosure as secure as you possibly can lol

Thanks, Clint & team. If I were to decide to purchase a reptile, it would almost surely be the California King Snake. I feel close to them, since, in the 70's, when I was in my 20's & always fascinated by snakes--but when information on them came from either direct experience, or from a zoology prof or from a library book, it wasn't always easy to identify a species of snake, especially if it lived outside of the
    bio-zone you were familiar with.
So, one day, while crossing the mountains east to west toward the Pacific in Big Sur territory in California, on a rustic dirt road, my girlfriend & I were shocked to fall upon a tri colored serpent, just crossing the road, as it were. I braked & lept out of the car, determined to capture the snake, out of curiosity.
But was it " Red & yellow kill a fellow", or "Red & -black, jump back jack", or some different rhyme? In the end, he slithered off, but not before I managed a couple of photos.
So later on I learned that it was a case of "Red & black, venom lack". Live & learn--the friendly King Snake of California!
Nevertheless I've learned, since then, to not trust at 100 % those old sayings, especially as pertains to the Coral Snake: because nature's surprising & always varying. What happens in California may not hold true in Nevada or Arizona, or eastern California, for that matter, or much further east where the coral snake predominates in the U.S.
Thanks for your work, Clint, & those who work with you...

That banded pattern is so striking during the day but so effective as camouflage at night within the shadows and moonlight. And the willingness to eat you is no joke. Mine (Steve) tries every time lol. You have to keep your fingers away from his head. But he is hilarious. I've never seen a snake with so much personality. Grills me every day for food.

To date out of about 30 Ca. king snakes I've caught, I have only had 1 try to eat me. I was removing that one from my coop and what he thought of as his meal, to I probably deserved it. As a kid playing with my friends, I loved finding these snakes to show my friends until I released em because they had such a good temperament. I have always released the snakes I caught w/ the exception of the rattlers, who came back when I relocated them.

It tends not to be a defensive bite, but a feeding response. A fresh caught snake is unlikely to try to eat.
