    The problem with "your first snake" is that snakes can live up to 25 years
    Just do research and get the snake you want

      Good point, but many reptile owners end up with multiple scaly friends over the years (like me lol) so it does pay to start with something easier.

      I agree, but in my case it is definitely better to start with a beginner snake, because I never had one and to be honest I'm a bit scared of having a this big responsibility. Plus I think a smaller snakes lifespan is perfect, not too short but it won't live for longer than me. I don't think I could handle having a more "complicated" snake, only if I had some sort of experience.

    • @catpoke9557
      @catpoke9557 4 роки тому +2

      True, unless you want to get more than one, in which case you can get a beginner first! However, I think most responsible people can own at least and intermediate level snake on their first try, with a few slip ups in the beginning- but probably not anything detrimental. But, again, most RESPONSIBLE people.

      I got a blue brown rosy from a friend, he caught her in the wild somewhere in CALI. He breeds Chameleons, and was going to give me one of them, however, I'm so glad he brought me my sub- adult female Rosy. After reading about care and handling of Chameleons, well, they really like to be left alone. They are pretty to look at (males have all the colors) but I love reptiles, especially ones who like to be handled. So he brought me a snake, I named her Freckles, I don't understand why she lists the boa's as the last of the five beginner snakes? When my friend brought me Freckles (i renamed her) she was a young sub adult, approx, 12+ inches long and at least thick as a nickel in her smallest. I kept her in that plastic shoe box for a few weeks, until I got a 10 gallon tank, with aspen bark, her original hide in the plastic shoe box, a water trough and a small heat pad. 20 years ago I purchased my first snake, I was in college in the North part of Arizona. I went to a local pet shop, and got a juvenile albino corn snake. I named her Maizey (Maize is the Indian name for Corn) however I had my snake probed only to find out Maizey was a boy. So this is how my love of reptiles began. 20 years later, Maizey wasn't Kosher being at home. Now I'm not at home and loving my Freckles.

    Thankfully my BP has been easy. He's still a baby, 5 months old. When I first got him the breeder I got him from said he ate hoppers. The first couple months he would only eat every other week. Someone suggested giving him prey smaller than the breeder told me to get him. I did just that and he started eating every week. After about a month I started him on the hopped and he took it. He's been eating hoppers every week. Not sure why going smaller fixed him but I'm glad my baby is eating every week now. So far he has been easy. I have a Cal King, Rosy Boa, corn, and my BP. Love you videos.

      Rachel Reptiles I had this issue too! I was told my snake was eating hoppers. So I got him a hopper and he refused. I instead offered a bigger sized mouse and he took it instantly. So it was almost the same as you, only mine wanted bigger instead of smaller. He's doing great now :)

      Just in reference, snakes in general can feed on a critter 2X the size of the biggest part of their body. Most are able and dislocate their jaw to take down their food/prey. I have a female rosy boa, approximately 3 years of age. I started her on fuzzy mice, then my local live feed store didn't always have fuzzy, so I tried a small hopper, no problem for her. It was then while getting food for Freckles, someone told me about the 2x rule, and that rat pups offered more meat and nutrients. I got one, and she had no problem getting it down, despite her small head.

      You should always do you research I was 14 when I first got my snake I couldn't decide between a corn snake or BP i didn't do a lot of research I went with the BP with not a lot of knowledge but when and I couldn't have been happier she was the sweetest thing ever and had the best personality she never bit me or refused a meal and always wanted to be by me or explore but sadly she died when she was 8 monthes old and she wasn't hard to take care of and you would have a BP for years until they are fully grown so you would be pretty much growing with it

  • @Gottalovecarpetpythons

    I do agree, balls and boas are not for the beginner, but l would much rather someone get the snake they want then go and get what one people think would be the better one for a beginner. If you think about it that person who gets something else and never really ever wanted that species, not the way to feel about the snake, though l would hope that no matter what it would be loved and well cared for even so. Ball pythons do like to be handled though and if from very young you put the time in, they will build that trust with you and handling will not stress them. Yes they are all different in what they like l agree, so it's important to respect their individual likes and dislikes, most definitely. Understand them and their needs and even if you decided to get a retic and fully prepared for that species, go get a retic, just don't be under 18 years of age maybe LMAO.

    • @JossersJungle
      @JossersJungle  7 років тому +27

      So glad to hear that you agree! Most people just recommend them (ballpythons) as first time pets, but.. yeah.. It can be difficult, sometimes it goes perfectly fine and sometimes it goes very wrong. Thank you! :-)

    • @Gottalovecarpetpythons
      @Gottalovecarpetpythons 7 років тому +12

      Ball pythons are most definitely beautiful snakes and a lot of people have one. Understanding they are fussy eaters and often go off their food and as they are known as the lazy snakes, they often have trouble shedding. The environment they live in also needs to be a bit more monitored as well than other snakes. So if you are prepared to manage this and have the understanding of how to help them, then a ball python is a wonderful snake to have. But most definitely not what l would consider the best first snake.

    Totally agree with your points about ball pythons.. They are beautiful and are typically docile, but the feeding issues are a real hassle. I own 3 BPs and the only reason I won't be getting more is their tendency to feeding issues.
    I would also recommend Kenyan Sand boas to people looking for a first snake. They are small ..very small if you get a male, and have small space requirments. They generally feed well too. They do hide A LOT though (burrow under the substrate) so if you want a snake to look at and watch, they may not be the best choice. But for someone dealing with family that has a fear of snakes or someone that is just uncertain of whether they could handle a larger snake, then a KSB is a good option.
    With boas (my favorites), you can get one that stays a bit smaller. Central American boas, island boas, Mexican boas, and some sub species (Longicauda) tend to be smaller. Also, males will generally stay smaller / thinner than females. In any case, buying from a good breeder, starting with a very young boa, and making sure that you know the snake has a good personality before buying is a good thing. Boas are active and require more room..so you are looking at an investment in a large pvc cage or terrarium with climbing space for an adult. I like them because of their more active nature, their calm disposition, and their very good feeding response.. I have never had issues with a boa refusing a meal (other than health concerns).

    Ball pythons totally have different personalities, my two bp's are completely different in the way they behave and have been from day one. You're right about the environment, I remember thinking when I got mine that they seemed to have a few specific needs in order to do well that no one really emphasizes until you start doing more in-depth research. I have a theory going that something about the genetics in the color morphs makes them more susceptible (I think that's how you spell that lol) to stress because my color morph is more sensitive to both stress and shed issues than my normal, who never skips a meal unless she's shedding and has never gotten in a stuck shed state. Also, I think people should pay more attention to whether or not they seem to enjoy their setup, they like places to explore and mine love it when I change the furniture around so-to-speak and at one point my morph bp (Doughnut) went on a short strike because she didn't like her setup then when I changed it she immediately started eating again. Just a thought of course. Great list, I'm constantly looking for ideas and you've added king snake and corn snake to my list for sure, as well as boa constrictors in another one of your episodes. Awesome video!

    I have a ball python and he is very docile and kind. The first week we got him he was sheding and that was the only time he refused to eat. He is a good eater and likes to be held. Sometimes I will be cleaning his water bowl and he will just climb up on me to be held. I'm am so glad we got him because I had been wanting a snake for a while but my mother wanted us to wait a year so we were fully prepared and I agreed. He is our first snake and my family and I all love him.

    I have one snake and she's my starter snake. She's a ball phyton and yess you really have to spend more time with her to bond with her. Once you get her meal regularly, and keep let her exploring out of the cage or terarium she'll be docile. Otherwise when she get stressed, she can get a bit deffensive and likes to feeding strikes and mistakenly your finger as it food. But in that case, its only happen when your hand smells like their food. So you have to make sure, that when you touch them its not after you touch mice or her food. Then you'll be save. Also, treat her like your friend. I like to talk to my snake to tame her when she's getting little bit anxious. And it oftenly work, and she start to be friendly again. Despite all of that, i agree you should have ball phyton as your first snake! Thanks for sharing, it was good video 💞

    il never forget my first snakes. they were a pair of wild garter snakes i caught in my backyard...i put them in a large aquarium lined with several layers of ground and dirt (also from my backyard) and i even planted grass on top of it to simulate a natural environment...the two were so at home and conferrable they actually started breeding and before i knew it i had a brood of over 20 snakes...some of them i turned loose in my yard when they grew to a fair size,some i gave to my friends as pets,and a couple i kept for myself...i helped the dwindling population of garters in my neighborhood grow again,and the ones i owned and raised were very tame and friendly animals. it was a very rewarding experience for me.
    i also loved and adored Platinum,an Albino California king snake i owned she was hand raised by a breeder and very friendly,all i had to do was stick my hand in her tank and shed slither over and climb up my arm (lol i didint hold her,she held me) i didint take to lining her tank with dirt,rather instead put in a few layers of rich natural Sand and she loved coiling up under the lamp or burying herself in the sand.

      The Great Lagi try giving your snake a soft bedding underneath it hide of a shirt that you often use for a few weeks so it can get used to your scent, little by little handle it for 10 mins at the least with your actual hands, I had the same problem with my BP, he was a biter at first, used my shirts and he eventually let me hold him without biting or being so afraid :)

    • @AsheTheRedScout
      @AsheTheRedScout 6 років тому

      i would suggest handling more often to get them used to it. another thing is that cal kings do have a really high feed response so its important to make sure the snake knows you're not food before attempting to handle them ^w^ i hope this helps.

      Thats actually really normal. I came.here to simply watch the video to see if shed mention that the california king snake is naturally shy and defensive. I went straight to a red tail for my first snake I wanted large and he’s a like tame puppy I love boas personality they’re amazing but I strongly recommend researching everything about the snake you want beforehand and knowing what you want out of your snake before buying what anyone tells you you should and doing your research and then going to pet stores or expos and finding the perfect one you will be able to see what your comfortable with and how the snakes personality is in person rather then having one shipped to you even a ball python can be snippy so don’t think that’s the only reason to get a ball they can be picky eaters but definitely do your research beforehand and you’ll find the perfect first snake for you!
