Only thing i´d change would be the tires and maybe leather wrap that steering wheel. Base model is hella equiped, more than enough for a daily driver 4WD V6 truck. The less crap on the truck, the less there is to malfunction!
So many comments about the price, but its not really a "base model". More like the base trim with options. Base model would not have V6 and 4wd. Base model would be $26,250.
ECT = Electronically Controlled Transmission. It just holds the shift points a little longer. Similar to a tow/haul mode in a GM truck. The bed is also not a liner. It’s a composite bed. There isn’t a steel bed under it. Just the body panels and then the composite bed. My cousin is at looking buying an SR and I wish you would have showed the back seat functions. Was wondering if they had the same storage options under them and folded the same as the upper trims. Thanks for the video.
It’s not quite the base model, it has 4x4 and the 6cyl engine but it’s pretty close, you could still cheap out and get a 4cyl with 2 wheel drive for around $25k
Yep composite bed...i have a 2020 TRD Sport4x4 and i actually took out those chrome lined tailights and put in the ones that are on this base model and put on the Meso Customs stage 2 harness.. pretty cool now.
Nice looking truck, the beauty isin its simplicity. Personally I like the stock wheels and have a set of Bridgestone Blizzak snows mounted on stock rims for my 3rd gen. Awesome day to you
The ECT button is more of a tow/haul mode. It increases the engine's shift points at higher RPM's. Also, the Tacoma doesn't have a bed liner. It is a composite bed with optional rubber bed mat. Great vid!
ECT Power button. It actually changes the shift points on the automatic transmission. Basically it holds the shift to run the engine at higher revs. Or that's the official answer. The secret is it's actually the master power button for the ejection seat.
All that ECT Power button does, really, is change the shift points a little bit. With power on, the shift points are a little higher -- better with heavy loads or when towing. I just picked one up a week or so ago, and compared to a lot of other trucks, I agree that it is an excellent value. I'm actually averaging about 22mpg so far with mine, and on some trip, I've been getting almost 27. And, like LSanti, I actually really like the look of the steel rims.
A lot of people I know complain and say “ for that price, maybe a little more I’ll go ahead and get a full size chevy or ram.I don’t want to buy an outdated truck” Yea you could but the reality is that Tacoma is gonna be passed down to your grandkids no worries. Toyota makes the best vehicles hands down. They don’t break!
I love the base model. Same engine and same transmission without the fancy tech. Just simple and plain just the way I like it. The fact that it's $33k I much rather buy it completely new.
I paid $35.1 K for my 2020 Tacoma TRD off-road in voodoo blue with the technology package and LED headlights and fog lights. $33k is ridiculous for the SR Tacoma
When you factor in that it will likely outlive anything in the category, it’s not terrible. Could buy a base Colorado or Ranger for less, sure, but if it lasts half as long, now you’re buying another truck where as the Tacoma has earned a reputation for reliability. There’s a reason Tacomas hold their value over their competition.
@@codydakota95 hes saying he bought a truck with all the upgrades for only 2k more why are they charging 33k for a basic truck??? in 2016 i bought my TRD offroad with EVERYTHING except leather seats for 33.5k
I’m not suggesting people pay that price, it’s just MSRP, nobody in their right mind pays MSRP...as proven in the original comment. Fully dressed Tacomas have an MSRP much higher than $35k, yet as indicated in the original comment, that wasn’t the actual purchase price. When you compare this “base” to the competition, you’re getting a lot more for the asking price. Manufacture Suggested Retail Price and actual purchase price are 2 completely different things. At $35k for the TRD off-road with LED and tech, you were almost $4k shy of MSRP. The TRD off road for 2021 starts at an MSRP of $34k so you got a lot for an additional $1k. This SR isn’t a complete “base” model, it has add-ons. I know he’s talking like it is, but the SR starts at $26k with virtually no options including no 4wd, and no v6. Sure MSRP is $33k, but as shown here, you’d probably leave the lot with it for far less. Nobody pays MSRP. Yeah he’s talking like it’s a base model, but this isn’t a completely stripped 4cyl 2wd either. If $33k was for the true base model 2wd, 4cyl, then yes an MSRP of $33k is too much...but this isn’t, and nobody pays MSRP unless you’re new at buying of course.
button on steering wheel you said is for collision assistance is for the distance you want the adaptive cruis control to keep you from the car in front of you.
@@jamesmoriarty9603 I haven't owned a tacoma of any type before, but I think a composite bed could be better than steel, and definitely better than aluminum, especially for a light duty truck. I imagine that like any other composite, UV exposure will eventually make it brittle, but this is unlikely to be a factor in our lifetimes as I am sure that the composite has UV protection engineered into it. The composite is probably lighter, has more grip, and it more resistant to impact (up to breaking point), and likely is much cheaper to replace in the event of breakage from abuse or accident than a comparative steel bed (lets not even talk about Ford). Seems like GMC must agree, because they also offer a carbon composite bed in their top tier Sierras...not that I would buy a GM product from the last 15 years!
I’ve got 2021 SR5 double cab 2WD for 27000, they haven’t made to many of these base truck(SR, SR5). And some dealers still have in stock maybe 1 or 2 but they increased their prices up to 34k!!! Insane 😓
ECT Power switch I think changes the shift points in the transmission so like when you're towing or pulling a long hill it will hold the transmission in gear for longer and won't shift to a higher gear at the determinate to some fuel economy.
This 4x4 with a V-6 is not base model. The 4cylinder 2WD is a base model. Also the ECT button makes a difference ( albeit not much) in 4cylinder model. Probably not so much in V-6. I own a 4cylinder, great little truck but not a horsepower beast.
“There’s probably a big chance that I made myself look like an idiot..” Some advice: Never talk down on yourself in front of others. Confidence is key and a little research will go along way. You are out there doing what you’ve set out to do and that’s more than most can say. Keep up the great work! This puppy shall be mine one day!
For the base model SR, if yours is a true 4-cylinder like mine and need more power on highways (hence why I bought the truck, to mostly commute to work in a metro area), sprint boosters for this thing run about $350. Takes 10 minutes to install and considering I’ve seen videos of Taco owners with a V6 engine complain about it running slow on highways, seems worth the $$$ saved instead of an extra $3K-4K for the V6, is worth it if you’re not doing a lot of towing. Slap a set of 265s and rims on this thing and you’ve got a great looking truck. Even stock SRs look nice to me, but those stock wheels are as cheap as it gets man
I had a V6 tacoma and loved it. I now have a 2.7 4 cylinder tacoma and actually like it better. Plenty of power, peppy and gets average 25mpg. I had a long trip hit 29 mpg. I would suggest whichever you have get it professionally tuned.
The true basemodel would be around 25,000$. 159 hp 4 Cylinder and 2WD If you just need a basic vehicle that can seat 4 and haul some stuff, it would be the one id recommend. With just 160hp under the hood and no 4WD the drivetrain should last forever. Toyotas 4 Cylinders are reliable and tough engines so I would not expect any trouble even when you drive it hard and tow with it. Except for the lack of power... Also it can only seat 2 which might be a disadvantage. If you lease that truck for a few years you will have a decent vehicle and pay next to nothing for it.
My 2018 SR didn’t come with a remote like this one but it had 2 storage boxes in the bed instead of 1. I’m assuming the ECT button is kinda like the equivalent of Chevy’s tow haul button.
The ECT button is the same as a Tow button in the tundra, when you have a load that you are carrying it gives you a boost but when driving with no payload you won’t tell the difference.
With the cost of everything today this or an sr5 will be good enough for me. I only tow a small camper, boat and a utility trailer. The sr crew cab doesn't come with a long bed like in canada so the sr5 might be the one for me.I like the trd off road but don't have any where to use it, just areas where i go fishing which is dirt roads, so i can't justify the extra expense, besides the tacoma itself is pretty capable the way it is.I know people who bought the trd off road package, they don't go off road with them. I asked why didn't they go with the trd sport? They said they like the look of the trd. As far as truck size when I was younger I used to crave bigger more power, but its not a necessity to have that unless you have a big camper or use it for work. Having a trailer makes up for not having a fullsize truck for me, your able to carry heavier things and have more room for many items verses the bed of a full size truck. But if your on a budget and don't want over extend yourself financially you will find a way to make it work.
Same here, it does not feel small, it actually feels like a full sized truck. I’ve driven full sized trucks and the Tacoma feels a bit heavier. I don’t know, i guess it designed to feel heavy and clunkier but nevertheless, I love my truck
I went from a 2007 SR5 Prerunner to a 2021 SR 4x4. Since most of the saftey features and convience package is standard for 2020+ the SR is the best vaule in my opinon. I got it knowing I was gonna replace the stock suspension with Bilsteins and change to wheels and tires I wanted. If you're serious about offroading youll most likely put in a airlocker for the front diff so youll change out the rear factory electric one for an air locker as well so getting a Offroad or Pro would be a waste of money. If you're not gonna use it to offfroad and just drive around town then the regular 4x4 and LSD is enough for when you do. I also like it because theres less electronic components and thats what made my 2nd gen Tacoma so reliable and cheap to maintain.
I just got the 2021 SR5. You can definitely feel the difference when you press the ECT PWR button on the Hwy. Cones in handy when are try to pass someone.
I noticed the ECT is only useful when going up hills with a heavy load. I have the 6 foot bed TRD sport. It has Bilstein shocks and 17 inch rims. The sport seems to be a larger vehicle then the base unit. I have 6 inches above my head and I’m 6’2. I noticed I have a lot more buttons. I have the 2019 version TRD and it drives wonderfully! I did get rid of the stock tires and put on falkens peaks. I have crawl control, MTS, BMS, parking warning for a rear. I got mine at a very good price of about 38K. Not sure if the SR is worth it after you buy new rims and tires, put on Bilstein shocks, locker. Looks like the SR doesn’t have the 400 W inverter in the bed. I guess it depends on how much you can do on your own.
Honestly I personally love the wheels on the base model, I've always been a fan of simplicity. I'm planning on picking one up just like this hopefully in a few months! I love it.
Paid 34 for mine but it came with some added features. Fog lights, mud guards, a nice step up, solid black rims, and my steering wheel is a much nicer design than the one in the video.
I know this Tacoma is expensive for what it is but I really love the simplicity of this truck man. Plus it has more stuff because it’s a 2021 so most of the things I need are standard. I don’t need a locking diff tbh because I’d just want it as my daily driver. I just love the old school vibes it gives because of the standard lights and the all black grill. The taillights are also better looking than the TRD ones and like there isn’t any black in between the two side windows which I loveeeeee. I love how the inside is just simple but I wish it just had a sunroof. The thing is, I love how much stuff the TRD Tacomas give you but most of that will break over time no matter what and plus I want to lift my truck and do all the stuff on my own. I want to add leather seats and all that good stuff including a leather steering wheel cover. I also wanna add my own sound system that’s tuned to my liking. My dream Tacoma is a SR in Super White with a 3 inch lifted and some ‘88 Ford Bronco type of wheels with the air dam removed..
I got my double cab 2021 sr 4 cyl for 24,000 new here in Texas, but I didn’t check the price difference for the v6 either way solid truck would def recommend
Not only is it cheaper but it's also more heavy duty. Especially for loads. I see more Hilux pickups in Mexico than Tacomas because of price and versatility.
@@OKFrax-ys2op thats right. Stricter emissions. It's funny how Toyota sells all three pickups for the Mexican market while for the US market, it only offers two. The Tacoma and the Tundra.
As a fellow SR owner, yes. Even thought the trds are great, the problem with them is that the technology and the features are already in place for you so there isn’t much liberty to mod it at your own due to these obstacles. But with the sr and sr5 models, you have more freedom to do some modifications and such
Overall yes...but I wouldn't say that with all the TRD models just with the pro, you could be limited on suspension choices and it depends what you want as far as mod...u can mod the heck out of any Tacoma. The Pro imo overpriced and thats even before 2020...i have a 2020 TRD Sport 4x4 Tacoma and I have most of the bells and whistles except I didnt get the light package. But I changed those headlights out and put Morimotos in and love them. I replaced the bumpers front and rear for steel and the rear bumper allows to continue to use my BSMs too. You can customize the interior too. But quite a few people get the base model 4 door with 4 wheel drive and then use the money saved by not purchasing the Pro for mods they want for what they want to do with the truck. I had a 2012 same model and I do miss the 4.0L. The shift points are also bizarre on the third gens...huntin gears like crazy. So I just decided I would regear a little earlier than planned to 5.29's and she is a dream to drive now...even have saved a few mpgs...not a huge improvement but enough to notice. I know they went to the 3.5L for fuel economy but paired with that transmission...its just not happy camper. But whatever Tacoma people choose...just do what makes ya happy...although good luck finding them. Ive had dealers calling asking if I would like to trade my truck in...they were really lathering when I told them it only has 4900 miles on her.

A lot of people like a base level 4X4 Taco for $34K. However, I feel that the cargo capacity is not competitive at less than 1,000 lbs. For $37K, I would rather get a base level 4X4 Honda Ridgeline. The Honda is much more comfortable and provides 1,600 lbs. of cargo capacity, plus the very useful bed. The Honda has only 5,000 lbs. of towing capacity, however. I think for most people, the Honda would be a much better daily driver and handle chores, other than towing above 5,000 lbs., better. Still, if the Taco meets the needs of someone’s jobs, it will be bulletproof for a reasonable price. Nice review. It is helpful to have reviews of these base model trucks.

Only thing i´d change would be the tires and maybe leather wrap that steering wheel. Base model is hella equiped, more than enough for a daily driver 4WD V6 truck.
The less crap on the truck, the less there is to malfunction!
Yup and the ect power button is for when you put it in 4 shell drive
@@Palma96 what's a shell drive
@@terrynichol577 meant to say 4 wheel drive lol
Yeah he shows vehicles but doesn't seem to know damn thing about them very frustrating to watch that part...still nice truck
Thank you for reviewing this. I was waiting for a video on the base model.
It’s not quite the base model, it has 4x4 and the 6cyl engine but it’s pretty close, you could still cheap out and get a 4cyl with 2 wheel drive for around $25k

I might be joining that club soon. And I might get the TRD lift kit on it. I might not though and have them install it later on
Bro, that's not a plastic bedliner. It's a plastic bed. I'm not saying that's bad either.
Hundred percent.
Yep composite bed...i have a 2020 TRD Sport4x4 and i actually took out those chrome lined tailights and put in the ones that are on this base model and put on the Meso Customs stage 2 harness.. pretty cool now.
I was about to say the same thing
Don't quote me but I think the Bed in the Tacoma is composite. Thanks for the review Ben.
Well tacoma beds are composite no doubt about that.
yep all you gotta do is slap down a cheap rubber bed mat and she's ready for you to throw anything in it!
Nice looking truck, the beauty isin its simplicity. Personally I like the stock wheels and have a set of Bridgestone Blizzak snows mounted on stock rims for my 3rd gen. Awesome day to you
ETC just holds the gears a little longer. Mainly used when towing or in hilly terrain.
The ECT button is more of a tow/haul mode. It increases the engine's shift points at higher RPM's. Also, the Tacoma doesn't have a bed liner. It is a composite bed with optional rubber bed mat. Great vid!
It’s amazing how people haven’t learned this by now 🤯 ect is from the 80’s and the composite bed is from 2005
@@benporter395 yep, my old Jeep Cherokee has ect
The ECT button makes a HUGE difference in the 4cyl. I just bought a 2022 SR5 4cyl and that button is critical for freeway on ramps.
I fitted my '00 PreRunner X-Cab with a JATO rocket kit for ramp merges and long hills.
ECT Power button. It actually changes the shift points on the automatic transmission. Basically it holds the shift to run the engine at higher revs.
Or that's the official answer.
The secret is it's actually the master power button for the ejection seat.
“ejecto seato cuz” fast and furious lol 😂
Exactly the reason why I want it
Base model? With v6 4 door? Base model I looked at was extended cab and 4cyl
@@codydakota95 What are you talking about did you not read my comment whoever buys an SR for 33,000 is an idiot
Show us the paper work?
You're right. ECT spaces the gear shifts a bit differently but doesn't add speed. I've timed it on my Taco several times.
It does feel like the initial acceleration is quicker.
button on steering wheel you said is for collision assistance is for the distance you want the adaptive cruis control to keep you from the car in front of you.
The Tacoma bed doesn’t have a liner, it is a fully composite bed.
would you wager that's good or bad?
Insane 😓
I have teh 20' SR and it's awesome. No bells and whistles to break randomly.
The anxiety the gas light is giving me is off the chain.
this is real "gas lighting" - not the crap the news keeps talking about :)
“There’s probably a big chance that I made myself look like an idiot..”
Some advice: Never talk down on yourself in front of others. Confidence is key and a little research will go along way. You are out there doing what you’ve set out to do and that’s more than most can say. Keep up the great work! This puppy shall be mine one day!
Thank you and that’s just my dry sense of humor
Self deprecating humor. Being able to make fun of yourself is confidence… or I’m just saying that because I roast myself all the time
For the base model SR, if yours is a true 4-cylinder like mine and need more power on highways (hence why I bought the truck, to mostly commute to work in a metro area), sprint boosters for this thing run about $350. Even stock SRs look nice to me, but those stock wheels are as cheap as it gets man
use my stock wheels for teh winter tires up here in Canada. Perfect.
159 hp 4 Cylinder and 2WD
If you just need a basic vehicle that can seat 4 and haul some stuff, it would be the one id recommend.
If your gonna lease it you should get the V6
The ECT button is for driving in the mountains and to change the power curve
My 2018 SR didn’t come with a remote like this one but it had 2 storage boxes in the bed instead of 1. I’m assuming the ECT button is kinda like the equivalent of Chevy’s tow haul button.
The ECT button is the same as a Tow button in the tundra, when you have a load that you are carrying it gives you a boost but when driving with no payload you won’t tell the difference.
I just bought the same exact truck, but mine has the 2.7 4 cylinder. Dealer put Allot wheels on mine, but it’s a base model.
I bought this truck super white in October with 4 miles it’s great 👍
With the cost of everything today this or an sr5 will be good enough for me.
The Tacoma SR V6 4X4 does NOT feel "small" to me. This 2021 is way, WAY bigger than my previous 2002 Tacoma. Feels like a tank in comparison.
Same here, it does not feel small, it actually feels like a full sized truck. I’ve driven full sized trucks and the Tacoma feels a bit heavier. I don’t know, i guess it designed to feel heavy and clunkier but nevertheless, I love my truck
Because it's not small and as you pointed out, neither was your 2002.
Yes it does
I noticed the ECT is only useful when going up hills with a heavy load.
Still far above reasonably priced....$30k is steep
Agreed I think I bought mine in 17 for 26 and it was a trd. There great trucks but the price they are going for these days is outrageous.

Not really for a brand new truck. And best thing about these is the resell value. Once you sell it it won’t cost that much to own it.

Welcome to the truck life
Would it be more cost effective to get the base model and just get the mods done on my own to get something similar as the Trd pro?
