I had an incident that resulted in a 2 week hospital stay. Blood pressure-wise, I was fine at home, but have ‘White Coat Syndrome’ when I have to go to a doctor. A hospital stay is a WCS on steroids for me. So, I was put on 100 mgs of Losartan, against my will, but the doctors wouldn’t listen. When I got home, I started taking my BP as I normally do, and noticed that my BP would dip below 99 systolic over whatever diastolic, twice a day. I watched a couple of days, then reported it to my primary care doctor, who cut the dosage in half and told me to keep watching it and report back. When it dipped to 83/56 and STAYED low, I called the doctor office, and they had me come in. They ran several tests, including an EKG, and several PB readings using a ‘special’ cuff, where they took readings with me lying prone, sitting, and standing. With those finished, the Doctor comes in and announced, “I am TAKING YOU OFF LOSARTAN ALTOGETHER. IT IS KILLING YOU!!!”
I am back home, on my normal regimen, and my BP is fine, though it took my system about 36 hours to rid itself of what I call a poison.

I took Losartan for around 10 years. After around 6-7 years, I started to often get diarrhea after a meal. My physician said blood work turned out normal. After 10 years, I started to get pins and needles whenever I walked in the Sun (or even with mildly vigorous exercise). The effects were too strong to describe. I talked to a cardiologist in one of the top hospitals in San Diego specifically regarding my photosensitivity coupled with Losartan being my only medication but no luck. I decided to try my dermatologist who has been diagnosing my skin conditions in 5 minutes even though this was not his area of expertise. He asked some questions, did some quick test on my back, took me off of Losartan, recommended anti-histamines for a month. The photosensitivity and physical activity sensitivity decreased to a good extent in a month. 6 months later I'm free of both diarrhea and photosensitivity. When its too hot (95F) I may get a very mild reminder on my skin but its too mild to bother me.
I'm putting this out there in case it helps someone.

Statin failed after launch. Cholesterol lies and incentives made it top seller. Useless killer. In India doctors do not tell it is poison. Poor cardiologists have no medicine good enough for patients.

STAY AWAY!!! WARNING !!! READ MY REVIEW BEFORE GETTING ON THIS. I experienced Dry cough that lasted 6 months, phlem in my throat every morning, extreme dizziness, extreme vertigo, vomiting, extreme anxiety, passing out. EXTREME Light sensitivity so that i had to wear dark sunglasses when driving and in shopping centeres otherwise the light was making me feel dizzy and getting panic attacks from it. I also developed extreme reaction when just cooking a sauce. If there was an action required like motion i was using my eyes, watching tv, reading subtitles, I couldnt do anything without getting dizzy, I couldnt even look at a computer. I called my doctor and ordered him to switch blood pressure medication family completely. This med is the most popular medication given in our country. Its the Go-To med doctors use. For me, this was POISON.

pinot noir, Thank you so very much for this information. I was taken off Amlodipine for reactions changed BP meds about 3 years ago. Been on Losartan ever since. Wake with phlegm daily, but lately I noticed an extreme sensitivity to sun on my driving arm. I had a STROKE about 19.5 years ago, that was why Losartan came in my Rx list.

This post helped me. I’m on 75mg Losartin. I’m photosensitive, I burn much too easily. Doc told me I’d be sensitive to heat and said stay out of the sun. Recently, I had unusual muscle weakness and feelings of exhaustion which cardiologist felt was my heart. EKG was normal as was stress test. I suspected it was the Losartin. My potassium was low. I’m lowering Losartin to 50mg. Both Losartin and metoprolol have helped my asthma. I have more endurance. Thanks for your post.

JUST THE AIR. A fan and no carpet is a big help. I was on a bipap machine until small particles broke off and entered my lungs. i WAS TOLD TO DISCONTINUE USING IT. MY WIFE BOUGHT another one and it kept making noises so I called the company and they sent me another. I did not use it in fear. I am now exercising a lot and deep breathing very often. I can lower my blood pressure by taking deep breaths naturally numerous times. I stopped everything except my asthma and thyroid medicine. I'm not a Dr. but they keep doping people up and I feel that is unnecessary. I am feeling great and I hope and pray I'm doing the right thing.

and what does he mean by 'high' potassium? I work hard to gather and eat foods high in potassium to counter my high salt value. I am at the low end of normal range with potassium and at the high end of normal range with salt. My potassium level has not changed but a point or two since on losartan (2 yrs) and before taking it. My salt value goes up or down five points since on losartan - 100 mg losartan has not reduced my BP enough ----- so WARNING -----
so Dr. prescribed an additional drug that has ruined me after only one month. long story - but be forewarned. --- HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE ---
Hydrochlorothiazide can be deadly. in more ways than one. Pharma wants to mostly emphasize the dizziness, headaches and weakness - but so many more serious things to watch out for. ---
Skin cancer - I have had in the past,
Glaucoma - my mother and grandmother had,
Urinary retention (two days bad-bad bladder pain - escaped going to emergency by managing to drizzle out a few teaspoons of urine),
20 pt drop from a good GFR on its way down toward dialysis,
20 pt increase in sugar, now in diabetes value range,
Bowels that don't know if its diarrhea or constipation day.
Believe me - Losing your urine stream ain't no fun. Hopefully, my 3rd blood test, next week, will show me if my kidney and bladder can be repaired and if 4 wks of being in the diabetes range can be reversed.
Thankful to be off it as I probably would have ended up with another bout of skin cancer and with the glaucoma my mom had.

@@ehayes7849 OMG, thanks for replying. I was just recently prescribed 50MG of Losartan and because I had heard about the many side effects, I was really only taking it sporadically (which I know is not good) maybe a couple times a week, totslly out og fear. And funny that you mentioned, they had also prescribed 25mg of the hydrochloride pill, and I believe that it was causing mucus buildup, and it seemed like it had my eye sockets throbbing in pain. I'm almost sure it had to be the water pill. I had also taken 50MG of Prednisone, but I don't usually have any side effects with that one. Like wow, how does a water pill cause all of that havoc? And of course, even after I had stopped taking the darn thing, I was still constantly going to bathroom like every 20 minutes or so, for a good week straight. Ugh! Never again.

I started taking LOSARTAN about two weeks ago. Previously took Hydrochlorothiazide and Metoprolol. Cardiologist said to quit taking both because I had different side effects. He put me on LOSARTAN 25mg.
My BP didn’t go down, as a matter of fact it kept going up. It started about 145/80 and increased to 185/105 with 105/115 heart rate. 5:39 I had really bad headaches and anxiety too. Two days ago I called his office to let him know it doesn’t work.
He increased my dosage to a 100 mg. BP is getting lower but it’s not ideal.
The problem is that I started having very bad dry cough, especially at night, which wakes me up 3-4 times.
This info said that it is a very rare side effect and takes years to manifest. With me it showed up almost immediately. So what now?

My doctor started me on that same dosage, because trying to takper off Xanax made my B/P go really high. Two days after I started. my lower back, knees and ankles started hurting. By 5th day I could not stand to get out of bed. Stopped that day, and by the next day pain had subsided but still couldn't stand. Finally got to walking around, residual pain for about 5 weeks. (Prior to this, I would put in 45 minutes daily on a Nordictrak elliptical, and walk 4 miles most days). 3 months later, the B/P got high, and I thought maybe the joint/muscle pain was related to gettin my second pneumococcal shot plus the seasonal flu shot the day before I started, so I tried it again. Really bad move; by the third day, I was awakened about five am by what felt like someone stabbing me in the lower right thigh/upper calf region, along with the knee pain. The stabbing pain is still present, and my knees have not yet come back this time, I can barely stand to put weight on my right leg. My doctor blew me off, won't even address it. That's all I can say.

What's strange is when I started it really didn't help at all. But I kept taking it for a month and as time went on these effects occurred 25mg one a day. I now realize after weaning off the side effects like dangerous levels of anxiety, nervous, and that pain all went away. I just work harder to keep bp lower

@williewideback.....My Heart Doctor put me on Losartan 25mg at once per day on 9/28/18. Within two months, I was having very serious side effects. I started coughing routinely, sneezing routinely, hoarse voice/rough throat, continual nasal congestion, lots of coughed up mucus and most importantly - I developed severe edema in my lower legs/ankles and feet. The swelling was just terrible and my skin was stretched so tight I thought it would rip open. Went to my heart doctor and primary care doctor about this. They both told me in a firm manner that Losartan DID NOT cause edema and I was just retaining fluid. I knew they were not going to help me and I definitely had to be on a high blood pressure medicine.
So, I decided to help myself, since no one in charge would. I had previously been on Lisinopril and my heart doctor took me off because I was coughing. I had almost a full bottle of Lisinopril pills left. I stopped taking the Losartan and started back on the Lisinopril. I had to do something, the swelling was completely out of control. Within 3 days of being off of the Losartan, the swelling started to decline. And has kept on doing so. Yes, I will (no doubt) start coughing on the Lisinopril, but I can live with that compared to the swelling. It is quite obvious that Losartan caused an edema effect in me that is not common (for lower extremities) and when I talked to my doctors about this, they looked at me like I had snakes growing out of my head and would do nothing to further investigate. I am sure I will catch hell when I return to the doctor for a refill on Lisinopril. Whatever !!

I’ve been on it over a year 50mg don’t like it. Cut it to 25 mg 1x a day and feel a lot better. Look to drop it
