My way of avoiding metoprolol side effects was to get off of it as well as my other 3 long term BP meds after going on a keto diet and losing 50 pounds including my belly fat.
When I had my yearly physical in January my doctor told me that I'm a pharmaceutical company's worst nightmare because at age 68 I'm no longer on any meds at all.
Congratulations and well done.
I'm jelly. I'm working on the same
Way to go. Stay away from all blood pressure medications. I heard (please verify independently) that some BP medications use the same receptors used by Covid-19 virus. That is why high BP increases Covid-19 complications. Not because of BP itself, but because of its medications. Make careful transitions to natural ways with diet and exercise under medical supervision because quitting these drugs suddenly can be dangerous.
@listening4lessons I had no fear about cholesterol since mine was good overall. The most important predictor of heart health is the triglyceride/hdl ratio and it should be 2 or less. My triglycerides, which had not been high, dropped to 56 and my hdl, which was borderline ok at 41 rose to 76. Therefore my ratio is .74 which is very good. My ldl did rise from 108 to 131 which is just borderline high, but keto is not concerned with ldl and neither was my doctor. Clearly, since I lost 40 pounds on a high fat diet, eating high fat does not cause you to gain weight--high carb consumption does that.
I'm 68 also and have recently been on a number of meds including metoprolol. I do not trust my cardiologist because I do not know enough to know if he sees me as a cash cow to perform a lot of un-necessary treatments on or if he is on the up and up. Thing is I don't believe I ever had high blood pressure.
I have taken Metoprolol for about 20 years, no problems
WHAT DOSAGE?...I ASK BECAUSE I JUST GOT PRESCRIBED 25MG AND IM EXTREMELY NERVOUS TO BEGIN TAKING IT DUE TO NO BEER 😂
I just got prescribed too and was scared to take it. My blood pressure was only 140/90 at the highest. I took the first pill finally.@@Rue100
Awesome video doc. Most docs think it’s non of our business to know this.
Thank you for this concise, complete, and understandable explanation!
I have also taken this drug for quite a few years- No issues. Thank you for your review- enjoyed it.
You are a rare physician who addresses harmful side effects of medications. Usually they focus only on what they can help. Important to weigh benefits to risks and to suggest natural alternatives before medicating.
Benefits vs risks.Preventive medicine and lifestyle changes should be emphasized.
Your so good,I’m learning and love watching your Chanel
Focused and clear. Very helpful, especially the strategy for negotiating the effects of shifting from a sitting to standing position.
Thanks so much for your feedback.I am glad it was of value.
Great information. I've been taking Metoprolol for 17 years but did not know some of these things. Grateful.
Glad it was helpful!
Good Night! 17 Years is a long time!! May I ask the dosage? I took metoprolol for about a year or so and had cut my dosage down to 12 and a half mgs. So Quiting was Easy-Peasy!😊 Glad to have my old energy level back!!😉😎
I've been on a half dose twice a day for 6 months due to a-fib. Your enumeration of several side effects was very helpful. Thank you.
Welcome.
Before finding this video, I was reading the exhaustive lists of which meds we shouldn't use with Met. I'm going to do more research on natural ways of correcting my condition. There's not enough done to help people take better care of themselves 😢
Very Excellent video! One of the VERY BEST of its type! Thank You! Answered many questions!
You are welcome!Glad it was helpful!
Clear, Concise, and Quick. Good Video.
Glad it was helpful!
I had nighttime hallucination…cardiac doctors were not so accepting of this…they kept asking if I was dreaming…my primary MD listened to me and switched the medication…hallucinations went away but the medication was not as effective….on call cardiology doc asked me to try the metoprolol again…hallucinations came back so they were finally convinced it was the medication…
How much do you wanna bet that most family doctors have No idea about these side effects?
You lose. We ALL do . Do you know the frequency? No, because you’re here to complain.
"Possible" side effects, possible. Why is it so many like to ignore that word "possible", and act like everyone is affected by negative side effects. I guess I'm just lucky as I've never suffered negative side effects from any medication I've ever been on.
I'm certain GP s have no idea about the side effects of the drugs they give out. I told mine that each time they add to my list🤯 I actually feel worse than I did without it. Always get the same answer " Ah, yes but it helps you avoid illness" 🤔 once they give you a tablet your on it for LIFE. If taking something for years , and years, and you are just the same ,surely it shows they aren't working.???
@@Diamondmine212 there are many, many blood pressure drugs. If one doesn't work, try another. Uncontrolled hypertension isn't an alternative to medication as it has guaranteed side effects, leading to an early death.
Your Right…I’m dizzy
Great overview, Dr. John!
Appreciate this, thank you!
That is great info...i am on this medication and do experience dizziness if I stand up quickly and loss of balance...i guess I need to talk to my PCM..

Thank you , I thoroughly enjoyed your video about side effects of Metoprolol especially the ending was very informative with some much needed humor.☺
I am glad you liked it and kudos to you that you watched all the way to the end.Thank you very much.
I totally agree, appreciated the whole video, including the funny bloopers! 😂
Thank you for this information. My husband seems to have every side effect listed! He’s only 57 and has a long life ahead of him. Is there some other medication you would suggest?
Very informative Dr. John
I'm not sure how I came across this post but I really enjoy it. Thank you doctor for your uploads
Thanks for watching!

They keep some of us alive. I had my first heart attack at 44, I am now 82, had several stints installed 10 years ago. I had arrhythmia bad since I was 5 years old, have one occasionally now. Thankful to be alive.
@Tiguar Jagger Sorry but the last time I excercized was 1957. As far as diet I ignore the low fat high carb nonsense and cholesterol is helpful not harmful. Keep taking the BP stuff like I have and take any advice with a grain of salt. Salt is absolutely required for the body to function without it you die. I do as much keto diet as I can stomach in order to keep the Blood Sugar under control. Keep praying and outlive all your sick relatives, mine all died before they could draw Social Security, I have been drawing mine for 19 years.

I love the outtakes!
Glad you enjoyed them. Not a lot of people get to the end of my videos!
Great strait forward information.
Awesome! Good to know these tips, Thanks!
No problem!Thanks for stepping by!
I was put on this after being diagnosed with a slight arrhythmia, the side effects I suffered were, a constant headache, watery eyes, runny nose, swollen ankles, aching joints, and struggled to walk up the hill on the street I lived
on, and a feeling of the plug had been pulled from my battery. I had an appointment with a specialist and described the symptoms that I was experiencing and was told that the med was not for me and should stop taking it. I was later informed that i had been over diagnosed.
This was a very good video, great tips!
Glad it was helpful!
This is one of the best, succinct, concise and easily understood video's on a medication I have ever heard. BRAVO !

I had hallucinations. Black shadows moving around my house. I could hear someone breathing and footsteps down the hall. My cardiologist sent me to a neurologist. $$$. I went to a psychiatrist and she told me about this med. I stopped the med and problems went away. Suffered 3 years.
Wow, thanks for sharing your experience.Hope you are feeling better.
I have seen shadows and actually heard noises , making me think I was crazy , I used to hear a loud noise behind me , followed by an awful smell , not sure , I thought it was a ghost .

I have 11 side effects, am getting off it.
Good job, Doc.

Muchas gracias por compartir saludo desde holanda ❤
Metoprolol gave me auditory and visual hallucinations. I was given an overdose in the ER because they couldnt get my B/P down. I missed 4 days. I came to in the State Hospital. I remember it reminded how I felt and acted of an Alzheimers patient. It took 18 months to figure out what was causing me those halucinations. I finally figured it out for myself, and I took myself off those beta blockers. and my physician told me to be very quiet and calm and no hard physical activity for a week so as not to excite my heart into another attack. I will never take another beta blocker, never
My father was hospitalized and we couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him till I did my own searching on the web and seen this pill 😔 he is taking it and has been hallucinating and depressed.
Been having hallucinations for months. Cut my dose in half told dr cannot take the lack of sleep and "seeing things" Dr insists it has nothing to do with metoprolol. At this time my problems are cut 50% by reducing dosage. We'll see. MRI etc dementia blah blah... problem must be anything BUT this drug says Dr. Now taking matters in to my own hand, Theanine, magnesium; vit D- things like that.
Sometimes the medication is worse then the disease lol would not take this medication
@@leo1933 I had a suffocating feeling especially when I dropped off to sleep. That was while I was on Beta blockers. It's an anxiety reflex. Brain saying it's got too much medication.
I've been on metoprolol for a long time. I've been losing my hair faithfully with dryness and, I didn't know it could be my medicine. I thought it was due to my thyroid.
Thanks DOCTOR.
Welcome.
It still might be your thyroid. Did you know that an iodine deficiency can mimic HBP by making your heart beat faster? I didn't. Look it up yourself and get a clean iodine supplement. You might want to take it for a couple of weeks and go get your thyroid functions checked, and revisit your BP status. You might be surprised.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing your helpful knowledge once again!
Glad it was helpful!Thank you so much.
Excellent video!
Thank you very much!
I just started taking Metoprolol I’ve been documenting my time of taking and what I’m feeling. So far it helped out with my hypertension and headaches. No depression! Will be going on a health journey and hopefully I can get my BP down with being active and dietary.

Thanks so much for your feedback. This is very nice of you!
Me too! My doctor swears my metoprolol tartrate isn't causing my nightmares.
Nice video. You provided a lot of important informations.

The first online Dr. I felt was competent and funny! I think perhaps you are a well educated, compassionate physician. I was on Toprol but did not tolerate it well. Heart disease is sooooo difficult and frightening. Changes in mental status due to medication side affects. Change in physicality and just overall huge adjustments. Very difficult. Thank you for all the great, straight forward information. Too bad I haven't found anyone like you. I might have been well and have a life by now.😊

Thank you so much!!! I never connected my symptoms (severe pvd, low extremity pain, leg pain and hair loss) to this meds till now. I have taken metoprol almost 5 years for fast heart beats and chest pain. My heart beats and chest pain got better but I have suffered these side effects almost a year. I asked about side effects but the GP dismissed my concern. I also ran so many tests, saw specialists including a vascular doctor, rheumatologist, neurologist, and spent a lot of money trying to find causes but no one could tell me why I do have these symptoms. Thanks again!!!!
Did you know that an IODINE DEFICIENCY can cause high blood pressure due to rapid heart beat? I didn't. They were using beta blockers on me that only lowered my BP an insignificant amount. I GOT AN IODINE SUPPLEMENT WHICH CALMED MY THYROID ISSUE and my heart rate AND BP returned to satisfactory levels. I had a THYROID problem, not a BP problem...they were treating the wrong damn thing.
Thank you for this information very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!

Hi Tori. I just started taking 25mg. I’m worried about the weight gain that comes with as well as lowering metabolism. Have you had any of these issues? Thanks I’m advance!
@@daniellerusso8172 Yes, I've definitely noticed that I've slowed down and gained weight but I don't know if it's because of this drug or the fact that I'm a stressed nursing student.

Then what you have done? R u still on this metoprolol
wait until your hair starts thinning and the circulation in your legs goes south and you start having "minor" heart issues. Those blisters don't heal. Give it about a year, then come back and tell us how you feel.

i suffer from wierd side effects since the whole system of medications. i said before i want to chuck the whole thing.
I was diagnosed with type two diabetes in October and put on this medicine in November for AF. In the last seven months between these two medication’s I’ll have put on approximately 8 pounds. I am not happy about this because I have changed my diet and I am exercising every day. I think this medicine has some positive effects and I have not had any other bad side effects. Thanx for sharing this. Have been on this RX for a # of years but feel I might have some side effects will talk with CNP at my visit coming up.
Informative Video, Thank you! Has anyone experienced bluish/purplish hands and feet especially whenever you're in large rooms and hallways with temperatures normally around 65 degrees (Not freezing, just chilly). For me, it starts about half way down around the forearms then a dark shade of blue or purple in the hands and fingers. If you press down on the skin, it immediately turns white, then back to the darker shade. I work in a county prison that doesn't ever seem to warm up and I thought I heard that Metoprolol can cause this in skin when chilled. I use the Tartrate (twice daily) for previous artery blockages which caused the need for a quadruple bypass 14 years ago and fine since using Vytorin for Cholestrol. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your clinical experience and appreciate your feedback.metoprolol can cause something called raynaud's which you are describing. If you are having severe symptoms have a discussion with your Doctor.
Yes I have also freezing cold!
Me too. Freezing legs in summer with two layers and a heating blanket. Ugh
I could not even do the dishes sometimes, and would fall asleep at the sight of my bed or a sofa. I got off that stuff so quick, went back to Carvedilol and am doing much better with dealing with pretty bad AFIB.
I've been on Metoprolol tartrate for 21 years. My current VA doctor cut my dosage by half without asking, then she let my prescription lapse, no refills available. The VA has left me without meds many times over the years. It affects my health negatively. Right now, I have been out of another med I have to take daily, for 3 weeks. I have called and asked for new script/refills 3 times. They said she can't write any of my meds till she sees me in office. Yet, it can be weeks or months before you get an appointment. Over the years with the VA, they have left me in a position of not having the meds I need every day, causing my health to be bad.
