- Welcome to our thrilling drag race between two iconic BMW M2 models: the 2023 BMW M2 and the F87 M2 CS!
The 2023 BMW M2 represents the latest iteration of this legendary sports car, packed with the latest M engineering.
On the other side, the F87 M2 CS, a limited-production model, brings its own arsenal of upgrades, including track-focused enhancements, and a lower weight.
Both BMW M2 models are sending power to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual. The 2023 BMW M2 makes 453 hp, while the F87 M2 CS makes 444 hp. But, the new BMW M2 weighs nearly 300 lbs more.
Will the extra 9 horsepower make up for the extra weight? Is the driver's skillset going to decide the drag race? Let's find out!

I have a feeling the drivers should choose transmission for drag race they are used to, in this case automatic transmission.
It was not a choice. Both are used to the six speed
@@bmwblogthey are not used to it😂
You guys should have chosen both auto cars, for a straight line drag race. (Sorry, but Otherwise it is nonsense…)
@@58kivanc58 exactly its clear if both are auto definitely the CS will win
@@Draconian8 yup not used to it, clearly not used to driving manual...
Roll race would have been better with these drivers😅
Maybe but that's the point. Not everyone is a pro driver. Look at the first run, it was flawless. That's the one
@@bmwblog it was just a joke but we expect expert level driving skills when its comes to bmwblog😉 at least the gears should be shifted flawless
F87 driver messed. Every attempt could have been so much better. It’s like he wanted to lose.
We kept some of the bad runs to prove a point: it comes down to the driver between these two cars. That's how close they are. As you can see in the first tun, the shifts were okay and it won. There were a couple similar runs. But hey, next time we will just keep the best shifts if possible, hopefully both drivers will shift perfectly each time.
@@bmwblog based on the quality of shifts we now only know who the better driver is, or it looked like there was a desired outcome. New must win over old.
Here is the whole story so we can all move on. The drag race was supposed to have its own slot that day. Due to scheduling issues with the track, we had to shift things around. Meaning this: We filmed the 1M, M2, M2 CS, M3 Comp back to back on the track for a full video review. Then, we moved onto the new M3 CS. Same thing: full video review on the track. Now it's 6:30PM and EVERYONE wants to go home. But I pushed them to stay behind to do a quick drag race so we don't miss this opportunity. That implied setting up cameras on both cars, a POV camera on my head, microphones, all in less than 5 min. Now jump behind the wheel and do a few runs making sure we get the proper footage. At some point, shifting was not the main focus of mine, but rather talking about the drag race, making sure all things are recording etc....SO OF COURSE, I might mess up some shifts here and there. But overall, what you see is exactly what we wanted to show: the cars are really really close and it comes to the driver. How do I know that? Because when I was behind the wheel of the G87 M2, I came second a couple of times also, but also ahead a couple of times. Then we swapped. We cut the video short to show the outcome. There was no desired outcome so I have no idea where that came from. Hope that clarifies it. But I'll leave you with this: the cars are very very close in performance.
I shift faster when I park my car then guy in m2 cs does.
😂
Nice vid..but sorry, the M2 CS driver was hitting the limiter every time, thus losing a lot on every shift. M2 CS is much faster than a new M2 in the hands of the right driver.
Not in the first run. But we showed all runs to show that the limit is the driver. The idea was also to try to hit the Rev at the right level. That's what that S55 likes
@@bmwblog thanks. Looking forward for the rolling start ... And may be DCT:)
@@bmwblogthe shifting was dogshit 😂
The CS is clearly not faster. It is lighter weight, which helps, but the G87 has a lot more power, as it is severely underrated. The car is easily 500+ hp to help with the extra weight.
@@JapplesnapI agree the g87 is the same as the new m3/m4 just detuned, mod for mod g87 is a beast no doubt however the f87 looks the best.
People always claim that a manual transmission is way better to appreciate a car but not a lot of people know how to properly shift gears and being consistent in doing so. I won t even talk about rev matching because most of the time, in car reviews, it is not properly executed.
This battle would have been meaningful with both cars equipped with an automatic transmission to remove the driver impact from the equation.
Agreed. Unfortunately, we couldn't get them in automatic. The point really was to show how close these cars are, hence why we showed the terrible shifting also
Make no sense like that…too much opportunities for driver mistakes
Meaning? Only one run had bad shifting
CS would win with a better driver!
It did. Look at the first run. We left all runs in to show you that it comes down to the driver in this case
This cars are neck on neck on this race...I was expecting a 1/2 mile run and roll races at different speeds, track run to see which had top run and dynamic....Thanks for the video, please re-run
Unfortunately not enough of a straight line there. We were there to film 6 cars back to back and we had a few min to spare so we did this.
M2 CS is where it’s at, or even M2C with KW, camber plates and small Schirmer ;)
The rear axle of the G87 is mighty (tested one yesterday) and it’s plenty powerful but it feels too digital and you sit too high in the non-carbon seats.
Put someone in the M2CS who can actually drive and I think you'd find the superior car quite easily.
F87 looks so much better than that Lego box thing that BMW thought was a good idea....
We swapped cars and the result was the same: very very close to each other. So putting someone who can actually drive, didn't make a difference.
I had a CS that was poor gear shifting to close to the redline.
Yes, that was one of the issues. The G87 M2 shifts better when close to the line. But again. people like to criticize without looking in the issue :)
@@bmwblog no he meant the driver of the CS sucks at shifting those gears and clearly the CS will take the win most of the time...
I suspect you are lacking a way to change gears
Pretty sure we're able to do that. After driving a 1M for 12 years.
Thanks for posting this test.
I think you should have swapped cars...because Jeff seemed to have better launches in the G87 (after the first race). So swapping drivers may have produced a different outcome.
I still like the look and size of the F87 more than the G87.
We swapped cars. Jeff won with the new M2. He shifted better. Hence why I think the cars are very very close
Does anyone recommend getting the wheel and tire package for the BMW if the tires aren't run flat
It all comes down to your risk level. I usually don't, but again, up to you.
The additional HP in the G87 do not make up for its hideous looks tho. The extra weight comes probably from the cheap ebay wide body kit installed from the factory.
Extra weight actually comes from the G82 M4
My god you can see the nose dive in the CS when the driver screws up the shifts every time
Not necessarily, the shifting in the CS feels less smoother than in the M2
@@bmwblog theres a major issue between the driver seat and steering wheel keeping the car from performing how it should
I will take a 2018 BMW M2 any day over these two with a little software upgrade six speed manual, of course
Did you get gold rims on the M2 CS?? Where’d you get em
Not our car. It's a BMW USA car.
I have a question about the new seven serise , which is
Can I lock rear door screens? I wish to clarify that in a video ❤
Which car?
@@bmwblog
Seven serise, 760i G70
Next time if it’s manual please do more rolls instead, great video
We will, unfortunately we didn't have much time. We had to get this done in 15 min
I had a feeling the M2 would win
😂😂
We had our doubts too for a bit
Magnusson clutch slipper would be my first mod too these
Drop the clutch and the slipper does the rest
easy too instal too-just tee-piece into clutch line
it has 0-10 clutch slip settings and the kicker is, it can be turned off and operate as normal
I’m not affiliated-i just use one and love it!
Thanks for sharing
The launch and shifting was horrible by drag race driving standards. This test proved nothing.
Ok, thanks for the feedback
Do they know how to drive a manual??
Nope, learning as we go :)
shocking driving
It can happen to the best when you have 5 min to do it at end of a long day of filming.
Makes me happy the S55 is still a beast or the G87 is just to heavy. 😢
With a tune these g87's are a beasts, they pick up like a lot more hp
The only thing the G87 M2 needs is the new Alpha-N G87 M2 Carbon Fixed Rear Wing - Class 3 by IND Distribution and better rims. The car looks fine. Everyone is hating the car for no reason. It literally has better performance than the F22 ever will. Jackie Ding is showing what the G87 M2 can don tracks. The F22 M240i is better than the F22 M2, and the G87 M2 is better than the F22 M2.
And what's not mentioned in this is that the m240i beat the m2 cs in 0-60 🤣
Edit: holy shit the driver in the m2 cs is trash
You clearly missed the first run where the shifts were perfect. We left the missed shifts in to prove a point. If we knew we're being criticized for perfection, we would have removed them.
@@bmwblog nice copy and paste. but no, while the m2 won his shifting was still horrible @1:59 you can see him shift late 🤣
What copy and paste? Anyway, next time we will spend a whole day on just a drag race video to make sure the shifts are perfect.
@@bmwblog don’t bother that much on the comments, this is the first video on the YT between these two cars anyway
Try an M240i automatic vs a manual g87…
We wanted to, BMW couldn't source the M240i
Try and apple and an orange
Hopefully i can get a G87 M2 someday.
Manual shifting is not your stuff for both of the drivers. You should go for the tct and automatic shifting, only than we you will be able to have an almost true comparison
Or we can go back and keep shifting till we get it right. We had 10 min to film this. We usually have hours. Hence the less ideal shifts
M2 CS. Driver is 🤥
We wanted to prove a point by showing the bad shifting also.
F87 is still CBU in germany, G87 is made in mexico....
F87 is a playful car, G87 is a fast car....
F87 is best lokin wif sharp curve, G87 loks SQ tat dun las long
Driving a M german QC car wif satisfaction tats F87
Wow
Great video, I've tried to like the appearance of the G87 and failed. It looks like it's wearing a cheap 1980's body kit! Very sad that M division can produce a car that looks so bad. The CS looks fabulous, simple and purposeful.
The new CS might look great too :)

BMW'S just dont launch well. I would do rolling drag races from 5-120mph. Or at least 1/2 mile. Inhave an M2CS and the mid range to top end is just amazing.
New M2 has a much stiffer body, and slightly better chassis set up.
But old M2C/CS is a MUCH better looking car.
The new M2 setup really shines on the track
@@bmwblog Yes I have seen a few videos now, it does seem to be a real track weapon.
I'd still have the older M2C though, it's just a beautiful car, perfect size, and playful too.
@@bmwblog After driving the new M2, M3 Comp and M4 Comp on the track at COTA (M Track Days three weeks ago), I thought the M4 Comp was the best track performer of the three. The M2 was a little unstable over some of the rough sections on the track, whereas the M3 Comp and M4 Comp were completely stable in those same sections.
The M2 is a great performing car, but its size makes it no longer feel like the M2 we all knew and loved. Driving the F87 M2 feels similar to driving my E36 M3, or more closely, to the E46 M3. But with much more power. The F87 is fast and feels just as nimble as the E36/E46. The G87 M2 clearly feels like a different, and larger, vehicle.
drivers' factor
Exactly
Both cars are head to head. It was more of the drivers.
Exactly.
@@bmwblog I would still have the F87 M2 CS even if the G87 M2 is faster.
@@WTF_888 same
Shhhh….. bmw listening :)
M2 cs driver did a bad job, m2 cs is faster
Not sure it is.
Terrible driving. felt like I was watching a fast and furious movie for the first race
As always, anybody can do it better.
danm they find the worst driver for M2 ....wow
Relax. It was a long day of filming cars. None of us were at our best and sharp
@@bmwblog Rather than getting defensive, it might be better to acknowledge this was not a good comparison race. I'd almost say to reshoot this, at a time when it isn't at the end of a 'long day of filming cars.' This wasn't a helpful comparison.
@@bbombasot why wasn't it good? Curious. Not defensive, just explained the context. You can accept it or not.
@@bbombasot and it's not like we get both cars at the track whenever we want to. We flew to South Carolina to film.
@@bmwblog 1. Clearly a line up by the F87
2. There’s no side shot showing if the cars are lined up evenly
3. There’s no shot showing the current modes the vehicles are in -- comfort? sport? sport plus?
4. There’s no shot of the launch control use by the G87. is it used? if it isn't, why isn't it?
5. At 2:14-2:20 you can clearly see the cones aren’t aligned
6. There’s no distance shown for this run (it looks extremely short-- is this a race to third gear?)
7. There’s no timing shown for this run
8. There’s no speeds given for this run
I get this is at the performance center and the g82 is tough to get for a video like this, but overall this doesn’t help your blog readers to make an informed decision among these two vehicles, which I believe was the intent.
Need drivers please, learn and practice then race!
This is automatic vs manual, not very equal..
Both manual
Y’all shifts are uglier than the new bmw lineup.
Red M2 sucked first 2 launch. They should switch car and you'll see how bad the driver in the red M2 is..
We swapped cars at some point. Both drivers had missed some shifts in certain runs. It proves once again: the cars are very close and it comes down to who shifts perfectly.
that new m2 looks ugly next to the old one lmao
F87 is a beautiful car. No comment on the G87.
The M2 CS is great
Looks like the CS driver can’t drive a manual at all!
Car was constantly hitting the limiter!!
False run if you ask me!
The driver in the M2 CS owns a 1M. He's good with manuals
@@bmwblog could of fooled me!!…. Why would you keep
Hitting the limiter then🤔…. He ain’t that good!
@@darrenboston342 tried to push it closer to the limit and missed it a few times. But lesson learned: next time we will keep the perfect shifting also. We thought that by showing the imperfect shifts will highlight how close these cars are and that it comes down to the driver.
@@bmwblog no need to make excuses for him pal, he’s a shit driver!
It’s a completely false run, by hitting the limiter he lost time (obvs) & lost…. You need two decent drivers who know why here doing, not some chump!
