The new BMW M2 is HERE, and we’re putting git up against some of its biggest rivals! The question is, does BMW’s smallest M car have a chance against the likes of AMG, Audi & Porsche?
Well, it’s time to find out! Starting with the Audi, it’s powered by Audi’s glorious 2.5-litre 5 cylinder turbo engine that can produce 400hp and 500Nm of torque. This power is sent to all four wheels via a 7-speed automatic gearbox. It weighs in at 1,570kg, and if you’re looking to pick one up it’ll cost you around £54,000.
To its right we have the recently revised Mercedes-AMG A45 S. It’s packing a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo under the bonnet that can put down 421hp and 500Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and it tips the scales at 1,550kg. It’s a bit more expensive than the Audi, too, costing around £63,000.
On the far side we have the Porsche 718 Boxster GTS. It’s the most expensive car here, coming in at £75,300! What’s more, it’s also the least powerful car here, with the 4-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six producing 400hp and 430Nm. This power is only sent to the rear wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, however, it’s also the lightest car here, coming in at just 1,435kg.
Then finally we have the all-new BMW M2. It’s equipped with a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six, and as a result, it’s the most powerful car here, putting down 460hp and 550Nm of torque! Just like the Porsche this power is sent to the rear wheels only via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and a new one today will cost around 1,720kg. However, it’s by far the heaviest car here, tipping the scales at 1,720kg!
So how will this one play out - will the weight difference prove decisive? Or will the M2’s extra power push it to victory? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

Agreed this is a very underrated car and isn't it true that BMW is definitely planning to make an M2 CS? Just imagine an M2 CS with around 550 horsepower, and then you take it to a reputable aftermarket tuner and get full bolt ons, with full ecu tuning on race gas or ethanol? I think at that point you'd be talkin about a lightweight M2 with probably 850 or more horsepower especially if you upgrade the turbos to more efficient and slightly larger aftermarket turbos and then over 1000 horsepower should be possible

It only looks good here cuz it's all black. Any other colour and you'll think the guy designed it with a scale. BTW I love the look of new M3 and M4. So I'm not one of those big grill haters. But the M2 design is a real let down. Side is good like any other M car. Thick wheels.

Loving these crew vids. The comfort setting in Audi's transmissions is pretty relaxed so you wont get those hard shift downs when suddenly accelerating, you have to be in dynamic - least in the old dual clutch (DSG)
Yeah, I've had 2 tuned S3's and exactly this, in comfort or dare I say efficiency mode the kick down and gear shifts are super relaxed. Dynamic or inididual mode is the way
@@agrxda I have the new RS3 and Dynamic is not the most effective mode to be in if you want full attack, it's the RS Sport mode, which also engages the drift - if they'd put it in that mode it would have been faster.

Yep because Porsche has the best chassi, which is really difficult to engineer correctly. Other cars just put in more HP

AMG just fell off, just like mercedes in general. The quality is shit (interior creaks and pops and cracks everywhere you touch), the reliability has hit rock bottom and the prices are higher than ever. Similar thing for bmw, but they at least stick up for their cars and produce some good engines till this day. Audi.... well, there is some very good stuff with them, but they are from the VAG....

And when they release a new A class it will be number 1 like this one when it was released…. Right now bmw M got the best engines performance wise…. And even thegendary amg v8 4.0 that was thr “best engine” according to Mat is now kinda meh compared to bmw’s
The a45s has done much quicker times, this is not the full potential. It's best time is quicker than all the others so I feel like Sam just didn't launch it well

The pickup on that A45S is surprisingly good for being a tiny engine with a big turbo strapped to it.
Also, can we appreciate how good RWD launch controls have gotten? Less than a decade ago RWD cars weren't even in the same zipcode as AWD cars from a standstill.
Rwd is fine on a dry surface with summer temperatures, but even on a dry surface in winter it would be a different story.
@@paulstevens9409 absolutely correct, in bad weather AWD will always be king. There's no defeating physics.
I just find it surprising what a long way manufacturers have come in terms of modulating power. On that note I'd actually love to see an old RWD car compared to a new one in the wet.
The a45 should be faster. 421hp is 421hp it doesn't matter which engine, especially when accelerate hard.
Depends on driver, seems like Sam's first time in the a45s. If Matt was in it he would be neck and neck with the m2 lol.

The m2 was appearing to be ugly when launched but now its grown on maximum people and is lovely and compliments the early bmw designs a lot more

Saw the M2 in a light blue at the BMW Welt last week and its not a beautiful car but it certainly grows on you(like many recent BMWs), however it definitely has alot of presence. Also they got whats under the bonnet right because its a monster!! The CS is going to be insane

That ZF single clutch gearbox is a masterpiece of engineering, I don’t know why car companies are bothered with double clutch boxes, they are especially snappy around town driving.
It's a torque converter, not a single clutch. But yeah I agree with your sentiment, from the DCTs I've driven I wouldn't pick one over the ZF8. Its shift speed is easily good enough and it can't be caught with its pants down in manual mode like DCTs can.
That being said, I haven't driven a PDK yet so I'll reserve final judgment until the day I will (next week actually). Maybe that's the gearbox that changes my mind.

The ZF f.ex first gen F90 M5 was horrible. It has better software now but still lacks to the DCT in so many aspects.

Got my bmw m2 g87 2024 in sapphire black 2 weeks ago. It’s beautiful and fast. Looks like one of those stealth aircraft. I love it!
One thing with RS range are usually good in from factory especially for track is how good the steel breaks are.

Does the M2 come with a carbon intake as standard? Looks like like there’s has been some upgrades on the engine. Looks similar to an eventuri intake… have a look at the frame where is shows the HP while the m2 bonnet is open…
It’s pretty nice that this A45s 4 cylinder stays pretty close with those monsters

Such a good drag race! That M2 is proper quick - not 100% convinced by the design though - I think the bumpers are too squared off - with more natural bumpers it would look awesome.
Please try organise all the generations of BMW M5, even if only to hear the V10 🤤

I think they mixed up the quartemile results between the Boxter GTS and RS3. If you freeze frame at 12:52 You can clearly see the GTS was 2nd as its windscreen and hood was ahead of the RS3. Not that at really matters though.

For the roll race after the kickdown race it shouldnt be the same gear for every car because the porsche revs much higher and has way longer gearing so it needed 2cnd gear, thats why it should be whatever is the lowest gear u can go in for that race, thats how a proper roll race is done.
The M2 had an eventuri intake which would of added another 8-10HP ….

Eventuri will add more than 10hp. Around 15 to 18hp. And that gives it the edge to beat the Porsche. On the other hand ot is definitely not 460hp @crank, more like 460@ the wheels. It has been measured recently.

Boxster GTS and the Corvette C8 are probably the best sports cars a person can have these days.
The RS3 is modded , lowered , Revo intake and upgraded inter cooler , which the tuning company says adds 20-30 bhp.

It doesn't make any more power. It just makes the car less reliable due to the oiled filter if anything. At least it looks cool.

The M2 appears to have an aftermarket carbon intake (not sure what other mods or tune). I'm wondering how much that impacted the outcome.
Zero. Actually if anything it might have blown some oil from the filter into the MAF sensor. They look cool but that's it.
Yeah most people who buy an expensive car like that don't just do an air box mod if they're going to mod it. Probably has an aggressive tune as well.
