I had this Chevy Silverado come in for minor dent repair on the fender. You will see how I used Paintless Dent Repair to remove this minor dent.
The dent on this truck fender was caused by bumping into the garbage can. The damage left a sharp impact point along with denting the bodyline and pushing the metal below the bodyline, causing it to be pushed out.
While this damage may only look like a minor dent when it is outside, once it is inside under my special PDR light we can see just how extreme and severe the damage is.
For this minor dent, I will need to access the back of the fender panel to be able to push the dent out from the inside. In order to get the access needed, I have to remove or loosen the fender liner. Doing this will give me access to a couple of small holes that will allow one of my PDR tools to fit into.
I had to use 2 different PDR tools on this minor dent. (the link to the tools are listed above) The first one I had added some PDR tape to soften the pushes. I then switched to a sharper PDR tool in order to make more precise and smaller pushes.
You can see another video of a truck fender dent that I removed with paintless dent repair. This other large dent was also caused by hitting a garbage can.

How do technicians even learn PDR? I've only just come across this and it seems incredibly "artisanal" and labor intensive but the price estimate chart in the video also seems fairly reasonable.

The way I was trained in PDR and many others is by learning paintless dent repair from an experienced tech. There are some "training schools", but you will just get the basic to get you started and would have to continue to train for months or years.
IT took me from 2-5 years of working with PDR every day, 40-60 hours a week, to feel confident in what I could repair to a high quality. So, while there is a technique and methods to using PDR, many will say that there is also an "art" to it.
