As an American, I legitimately thought Mrs. Brown's Boys was a favorite over there lol. And I absolutely did not know it started in 2011! Thought it might have been in early 2000s.
It looks like it was made in the 70s. It has high viewing figures, but millions of people strongly dislike it. It's easily the most disliked UK sitcom.
It is a favourite over here. Nobody knows why. My best guess is it's because its on the BBC and old people like the BBC and like laughing at men in drag (we had a lot of that in comedy in the 1970s
Well alot of people love it here..my gran that passed away years back loved it..i like it too...its kinda the whole family, and messege thing..even got a gameshow..i guess we scots get it..while eng has no clue
It feels like it's longer, I know. It's a very divisive comedy, you either love it or you hate it with a passion (like I do). For me personally, the jokes are just not funny and I don't like the set up or the way it's filmed
In Citizen Khan Adil Ray did a pretty good job of reworking some of the aspects of those 'dubious' 70s sitcoms such as It Aint Half Hot Mum (a particular favourite) and Mind Your Language (and referencing Citizen Smith) without turning them into the BBC's politically correct fodder of more recent years. (Mrs Browns Boys on the other hand should be disposed of like the worst nuclear waste! But then it all comes down to personal taste.)

I remember The Royal Bodyguard vividly, the BBC made a MASSIVE deal of it over the Christmas season with so many repeated adverts, and I, like everyone else, CRINGED at it when it came out in New Year's!
Royal bodyguard was a real disappointment. David Jason also developed Arkwrights stammer in the reboot of Open All Hours, which baffled me, so I turned it over!😂
"Mrs Brown's Boys" is a mixed bag for me. Some storylines or dialogue can be humorous, but it's otherwise just passable to me. I remember the uproar that occurred when the BBC cut away from airing a repeated Christmas episode to report Nelson Mandela's passing, which just seemed ludicrous to me.
Cutting to a newsflash to report the natural death of a retired nonagenarian is ridiculous. It wasn't even important enough for a banner at the bottom of the screen.
@@andrewq159 Nelson Mandela was an extremely important and much-admired person. I'm sure Brendan O'Carroll and the cast of Mrs Brown's Boys would have had no problem with a newsflash of this nature interrupting one of their episodes.
@@jackieyoungman7970 Nothing bad happened as a result of his death. He wasn't assassinated when he was president, causing riots & a new election. He died naturally in his 90s.
If 'Heil Honey I'm Home' had existed within some sort of sketch show, The Fast Show for example, it would have made perfect sense. People probably would have understood it's satirical take on nuclear family sitcoms...just my opinion 😅

@@beawalker9201 Yes , I know that now . How could I have been so foolish ? Thank goodness there are intelligent folk like you around , to put us thickies right .
I am still perplexed as to how anyone could watch Mrs Browns Boys? I watched one episode once, lasted about 5 minutes. Utterly awful, bottom-tier humour and terribly written.
This video talks about "comedies from 50 years ago" as if that's the kiss of death. The fact is that people still watch the hits of that era for a reason. Shit is shit and gold is gold, whatever the era.
All the controversy of "Hail Honey I'm home' came from the tabloid newspapers. It was shown on BSB's first week when the only viewers it had were on cable (as the dishes weren't ready AGAIN) so those who did see were minuscule in the least.
Number 20: “this show is dire and should never see the light of day again”- 1 episode was released to the public… you can find dire controversial episodes in many beloved sitcoms too Number 19- “the stereotyping of British Pakistanis and the mocking of Muslims”- the show was written by British Pakistanis and Muslims…. Number 18- all you’ve commented on was Felicity’s accent… the actual comedy content may have been strong… Number 17- At least I can agree with you on this one Number 16- “a throwback to 1970s sitcoms that are only looked back at positively thanks to nostalgia”- many 70s sitcoms frequently finish top in these top 10 lists… Number 15- I agree on Married For Life- Married With Children was funny enough and was shown here anyway Number 14- Never seen Mad About Alice but looks terrible. However I can’t fairly comment until I’ve seen it. Number 13- “Culture clash comedy grew tiresome”- really? You could say that about Desmond’s, famously one of the best sitcoms… culture clash is just a genre of comedy… you could make the argument that any genre of comedy would grow tiresome if you watched it enough. “It tried to make a British estate being run by a black woman a strong source of content but that fell flat quickly”- the casual racism in this video is much more unfunny than half these sitcoms. Number 12- “juvenile curse words”- as if any of the panel shows you rave about on this channels don’t rely on that as a source of humour either? Number 11- “the show focuses heavily on gross humour and innuendos”- like most sitcoms then? “It feels like a sitcom from 50 years ago”- and what’s wrong with that? Fifty years ago you had Dad’s Army, Steptoe and Son, Porridge, Fawlty Towers etc… the comedy snobbery is unbelievable- a show doesn’t last 10 years if it doesn’t have a loyal fanbase. It’s slapstick. Number 10- “the show feels like it came out in the early 2000s”- the same decade that brought us Spaced, Black Books, and the IT Crowd? Yet you’re using it as a criticism. Number 9- “the annoying and very immature characters”- yes because the Inbetweeners characters were the height of sophistication, weren’t they? It’s a show focused on teenagers, of course the characters will be annoying and immature. Ridiculous criticism. Number 8- Brighton Belles I can agree on, a lazy remake Number 7- “be prepared for shocking uncomfortable humour”- if it’s shocking and uncomfortable is that not good comedy? “Viewers were outraged the remaining episodes weren’t shown”… isn’t that a sign viewers were interested in it? Comedy is supposed to push boundaries… more importantly, it’s supposed to make people laugh- it’s not supposed to be a moral lecture. Number 6- “the role was written for Jim Davidson which should give you an idea of its quality”… it was written *for* Jim Davidson, not *by* Jim Davidson… I’m starting to think WatchMojo hasn’t actually watched any of these sitcoms to be able to rank them the worst. Number 5- the Holden Girls- this one I can agree on- utter tripe. Number 4- “the show reused old jokes”, aka a running gag… your Holy Grail of sitcoms The Inbetweeners had plenty of them too… Number 3- never watched it, can’t comment, but “it was made for UK Friends fans but without relatability or comedy”… yes because Friends was so side splittingly funny… who doesn’t know someone as dim as Joey? Number 2- the biggest issue was presenting it as a sitcom rather than more of a drama with comedic elements. Number 1- this feels more like a Family Guy sketch than its own sitcom, though I’m strangely intrigued by it- it’s absolutely tasteless though. “Other historical figures that were *said* to be parodied”- did WatchMojo just admit they didn’t watch any of these sitcoms before ranking them on a list?….
I think the appeal of Mrs. Brown's Boys is how they keep outtakes in the show and the cast's reactions to flubs and bloopers. It makes it seem like the whole cast is having fun, which lets the audience have fun.
I think you put that perfectly. I can't imagine it any other way. Whilst I wouldn't call myself a fan of the show I did enjoy the first to seasons, it quickly became repetitive.
I remember a bloke trying to tell us a bit from the programme, and not managing it as he kept on cracking up, so I gave it a watch. Every time I've watched I've just thought, "meh". Maybe I would bother to watch it if I was stuck in a room and there was not much else on, but I just can't see the appeal.
@@pineapplepenumbra Porridge, Only fools and horses, Minder, One foot in the grave, Fawlty Towers, Black Adder, Yes Minister/Yes Priminister, Rising Damp, Mrs Browns Boys, Open all hours.
I'm surprised "Mind Your Language" didn't make it to the list. Apart from the nonsensical premise of teaching the very basics of English to people who can obviously already speak English well (albeit with exaggerated foreign accents), the show's so full of stupid, cringy racism and innuendoes that I managed to watch just one episode before quitting. The characters are all shallow and keep repeating the same phrases (think Manuel from "Fawlty Towers" or most of the characters from "Allo, Allo"), the teacher is young and clueless, his boss is old, ugly and abusive, the French and Swedish female students are blonde bimbos, their Italian classmate is in love with them both, the Chinese student is obsessed with praising communism etc etc.
I heard this in the voice of Alan Gordon Partridge! Who in my opinion would have been the BEST Bond! On that note... Here is Thunderball by... errrr... the Welsh one! 😉👍
Mrs Brown's Boy's provided one of the most surreal moments in TV history when somebody being hit with a pan immediately cut to a newsflash reporting the death of Nelson Mandela.
Babes in the wood could of been funny if it was done 10 or 15 years earlier. Rather than a friends remake I always thought it was trying to recreate man about the house and by 98 that type of humour had sling since been deemed sexist and outdated.
Hardwicke House was brilliant! Yes, it was outrageous but I like that in comedy. Of course it's not going to be to everybody's taste but then nothing will be. It broke boundaries and people were uncomfortable with that. Those that complained were probably those who would have been perfectly happy for sitcoms to forever be nice and 'safe' like Terry & June.
Being a 14 yr old at Secondary school at the time this originally aired, my school was more Hardwicke House than Grange Hill, and I think this applied to many across the UK at the time. Pervy teachers and underage shenanigans made this more a drama than a comedy at times.
Dude; people didn't complain about how "outrageous" it was, we complained because it was a bad comedy about bad people we're meant to root for! I can't believe you Hardwick House simps even exist.
@@NebLleb I remember the fuss about Hardwicke House and it was seen as outrageous and quite simply beyond the pale. Not just 'bad'. In your opinion of course. You can't believe that somebody else likes something you don't? Well you're going to have to deal with that I'm afraid.
True story: I was sat at the bar in The Tap and Spile boozee in Birmingham. My mate and I got chatting to some bloke who said he had written a comedy show for the BBC and was going to be famous. His name was Adil. We wished him well in his endeavours. If I could turn back time, I would have thrown him in the canal the pub is conveniently situated right next to.
Its a real shame about Mrs Brown’s Boys. If they had stopped after series 2, it would be remembered very fondly. However, after series 3, it just got so so so repetitive and just not funny anymore. A real shame.
It's like some suit at the BBC saw how successful Channel 4's 'Father Ted' had been, an thought: 'Irish stuff is funny'. Father Ted was indeed funny, as it was brilliantly written and acted. 'Mrs Brown's Boys' has neither of those qualities. It's the sort of show enjoyed by Sun 'readers', and the terminally bewildered.
Hardwicke House, I went out and watched the whole thing just to satisfy my curiosity.... My God, absolute horse manure of the highest order... not only set in a school but seemingly written by school kids, not very bright school kids at that.... It's not anarchic or controversial, it's just awful. The script is that bad that they can't even make obvious things like toilet humour work, Pam Ferris gets lumbered with the dated "Frumpy Lesbian Teacher" role, although it's unfair to pick on her character as all the characters are badly written clichés, even a cameo from Rik and Ade couldn't make it funny, their comic ability just about raising a smirk before being dragged back down by the awful script!
How could you guys forget So Haunt Me? I'm American and we got that horrible show about a very stereotypical Jewish old woman ghost haunting a young family. Oddly enough, she sounded American.
Mrs Brown's Boys is classed as an Irish comedy because the show is supposed to be based in Ireland and the majority lf the cast are Irish It's filmed in Scotland so can be clasded as British too Its an Irish-British comedy
When I’m feeling low, I stick on a DVD in my player with Mrs. Brown’s boys, so hilarious big laughs turn My down mood into in a mood. Thank you Mrs. Brown’s boys❤
As an American, I've only seen a few of these shows. Although I agree with most of the shows that I've seen being godawful, I do love Mrs. Brown's Boys. Yes, it's raunchy, yes it's silly, but it's damn funny. I know why it's been on the air for so long.
A couple of worthy mentions. 'Curry and Chips', where Spike Milligan dons the boot polish once again to play an 'Irish Pakistani' (or was it a Pakistani Irishman?) called 'Kevin O'Grady'. It also starred Eric Sykes and Kenny Lynch. The other is 'Up the Elephant and Round the Castle'. Essentially Jim Davidson playing the character of Jim Davidson.
@CourtneyPieck. Why did US TV try The Office ? They didn’t get the joke in the first place. The characters were incapable of excitement, and close to brain-dead. Americans are positive, they like Hope and triumph over failure. This was a Hell of nothingness. Only the Brits could see it as hilarious. For Americans it’s all very, very sad. They might get stupid David Brent: he had private ŷdreams of being Area Manager. But he was sacked , very politely. Life ( or Death, as we call it) just carried on as before. Brilliant.
My rule of thumb is if a comedy is aired on BBC 1 or ITV, then avoid it, especially during "prime time". BBC 2, BBC 4 and Channel Four might be worth watching. Got to be after the watershed though.
If someone can't be funny without relying on these, they should give up on comedy. While I do partially agree that comedy is too strictly policed these days, it's also tiring to hear the same overdone rubbish, such as multiple "comedians" using the same unoriginal transphobic tropes.
@@Naruya23 you can have lilly singh and Hannah Gadsby I'll stick with Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Ricky Gervais, David Chappelle, Bill Burr, George Carlin and Bill Hicks
I absolutely love Mrs Brown's Boys, although I think the post-COVID Christmas episodes have far fallen short of all the others and maybe it's now time for Brendan O'Carroll & Co to hang up their hats. The first time I ever saw Mrs Brown's Boys, I was just in hysterical laughter from start to finish. For me, there is much more than just humour in Mrs Brown's Boys in that I find the storylines to be interwoven and complex and I like the acting. Great characterisation too and some wonderful off the cuff adlibs. For me it incorporates many different styles of humour in one bag.
I thought The Wright Way was good! I'd forgotten about it until seeing this video, but I definitely remember enjoying watching it at the time. The titular character was played by David Haig, who also appeared in another favourite of mine - The Thin Blue Line. Mina Anwar was in both too!
The Wright Way was, imho, appalling rubbish. Hey, let’s have a right-on twist - his daughter has a girlfriend! Now criticise it if you dare! And having worked for a local authority, it was about as realistic as The Thin Blue Line (which I liked). Note to all script-writers - NO-ONE in a local authority has their own office except for the Chief Exec. EVERYONE else, including directors, has to share.
I’m not even British and I knew “Heil Honey, I’m Home” was #1.😒 Also, what’s with Amanda Holden starring in so many bad comedies? It seems like she should fire her agent NOW! 😅
@timglennon. This is a bit weird because Gavin and Stacy is one of my all-time favourites. I thought everyone was superb - even James Corden. It wasn’t full of gags. It was brilliant observation : subtle and surprising.
What about Grace and Favour (an attempt to stretch out the by-then-exhausted Are You Being Served even further) or Jack Whitehall's Bad Education (I used to like Whitehall until I saw that)?
In defense of Hardwicke House: I was in my early 20s at the time and I quite enjoyed it! It was very edgy, which, at that time, was a good thing. Mrs Brown's Boys...oh dear god...no comment.

@@CycolacFan that's a bit different though. Father Ted was making fun of the more popular aspects of Irish life, the catholic church and was more generalised. Mrs Brown isn't. I can guarantee a lot of Brits that watch Mrs Brown don't even realise Finglas is a real place.

I remember a comedy (I don't remember the name) about two competing antique dealers. Although they didn't particularly like each other, the daughter of one was married to the son of the other. In one episode, the two take a flight to Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada to visit their recently-emigrated children. They take a taxi when they arrive in Vancouver, and the cab driver was speaking with a poorly spoken New York accent. I was stunned. That accent is not spoken anywhere in Canada, nor in the western US. It would be like a character in Glasgow speaking cockney.

To tell the truth I don't mind Mrs. Brown's Boys and kinda like it, sure it's not comedic for most people but it has a charm for those who has a family like the Browns also sometimes we need some comedy that can be seen as lowbrow as a way to unwind from the stress of the world which can be said for some of the other comedies on this list.
Citizen khan is the most on point funny show ever as a British Pakistani there is a citizen khan in every locality the only reason most people complained was there couldn’t handle the truth
It's probably people getting offended on other's behalf. I haven't watched it and it's not my thing but I don't know if I would say it's one of the 'worst'.
There was another awful comedy around 1986 called 'Help' it was on at Prime Time when the first 6 parts was on. A while later they made another 6 which were aired in the afternoon. One of the McGann brothers was in it. At the time I was friends with one of the actors who played one of the leads. As far as I know he hasn't been in anything since.
Starred Jake Abraham who was in Lock Stock, 51st State amongst others. According to IMDB, he was listed as 'Jack Abraham' in Help's credits. (Now before the Internet, that would've bugged me for weeks, trying to put a name to his face 😂)
I’m pretty sure that even a hundred years from now, “Heil Honey I’m Home” will still be firmly in the #1 spot of lists of bad comedies, bad tv executive decisions, and Reasons You Shouldn’t Make Major Decisions While Clearly Under the Influence.
Count Arthur Strong wasn't bad, I think it's just not everyone's cup of tea. And granted, the original radio show and his stage shows are better than the TV show, but I think it was decent. They even had the sense to have a straight man character (Rory Kinnear) to add more of a plot structure to the show.
Probably not well known enough? It's pretty obscure for most people............the Hitler "comedy" is mainly known by reputation, not many remember it being broadcast
20 shows and you didn't manage to name ONE Carla Lane written travesty? Shame on you forever. Some of these are absolutely fine shows. No one could accuse 'Citizen Khan,' 'Babes in the Wood' or 'Mrs. Brown's Boys' of vying for any best show ever award. But they're watchable. The #1 on the list is just more bizarre than unfunny. And no more offensive to sensibilities than half of the Monty Python catalogue if looked at unbiasedly. You comment on quite a lot of these that critics panned the shows. Critics are pretty much idiots to be perfectly honest.

For all the many things this country has to be embarrassed for, that show is in the top five
I actually loved the first couple of series of citizen Khan. I live just outside the Birmingham area and can relate to the humor of it 😂
so you can relate to a lack of humour, interesting

Whenever a show gets that much plugging, you just know it’s going to be crap.
...and it was.
Yes, David Jason was everywhere, saying how fantastic it was. You just knew that it would be awful - and it was worse than that…
Brendan O'Carroll has it written in his BBC contract that he gets the Christmas day 10PM slot every year up to at least 2026
Can anyone explain to me what makes Amanda Holden worthy of judging anyone's talent?
Ask Simon how good she is at head maybe
I waas wondering who hd more prsothetic in that clip of the show about her and her gran
She has two qualifications - her right tit and her left tit.

Royal bodyguard was a real disappointment. David Jason also developed Arkwrights stammer in the reboot of Open All Hours, which baffled me, so I turned it over!😂

Her shows were commissioned on her back
Idk this woman, but from the comments I’m gonna assume she’s the UK’s Amy Schumer.

@@Fredkitchens Every time, every time.
Miranda was excellent.
Number 20: “this show is dire and should never see the light of day again”- 1 episode was released to the public… you can find dire controversial episodes in many beloved sitcoms too
Number 19- “the stereotyping of British Pakistanis and the mocking of Muslims”- the show was written by British Pakistanis and Muslims….
Number 18- all you’ve commented on was Felicity’s accent… the actual comedy content may have been strong…
Number 17- At least I can agree with you on this one
Number 16- “a throwback to 1970s sitcoms that are only looked back at positively thanks to nostalgia”- many 70s sitcoms frequently finish top in these top 10 lists…
Number 15- I agree on Married For Life- Married With Children was funny enough and was shown here anyway
Number 14- Never seen Mad About Alice but looks terrible.
Number 8- Brighton Belles I can agree on, a lazy remake
Number 7- “be prepared for shocking uncomfortable humour”- if it’s shocking and uncomfortable is that not good comedy?
Number 4- “the show reused old jokes”, aka a running gag… your Holy Grail of sitcoms The Inbetweeners had plenty of them too…
Number 3- never watched it, can’t comment, but “it was made for UK Friends fans but without relatability or comedy”… yes because Friends was so side splittingly funny… who doesn’t know someone as dim as Joey?

I watched it on UA-cam (I didn't know about it at the time) and quite enjoyed it.
Being a 14 yr old at Secondary school at the time this originally aired, my school was more Hardwicke House than Grange Hill, and I think this applied to many across the UK at the time.
Pervy teachers and underage shenanigans made this more a drama than a comedy at times.

Mrs Browns boys resonates with the Irish more than tbe British it seems. Why have you omitted 'Count Arthur Strong' from this list? It's absolutely dire and is a lot worse than most of these shown on this list.
we'll have to check it out!
@@WatchMojoUK, please don't because you'd be completely wasting your time and I wouldn't want you to do that.
Probably not well known enough? It's pretty obscure for most people............the Hitler "comedy" is mainly known by reputation, not many remember it being broadcast
A friend of mine recommended it to me and I just couldn't get into it.
Preach it. She was the WORST.
The royal bodyguard was not that bad to be no.2
It was dire. Unbelievably dire.
Why no 'The Goes Wrong Show'. Not only is it the worst comedy it's the worst progrmme of any genres.
A friend of mine once told me Mrs. Brown's boys was her favourite comedy. I wonder how she is doing after all these years.
🤣
As if you have friends.
