      Father Ted was missing, and the order was a bit mixed up but other than that... stay safe, and of course, careful now.

      Allo, Allo! but no Dad's Army; Blackadder but no Not the Nine O'clock News; and Brass Eye is overlooked? I agree with another contributor that the omission of the beloved Dad's Army is the single most inexplicable omission in this list. It ran and ran, missing episodes remade, making of drama documentaries. In my opinion Dad's Army is equally as important as Fawlty Towers in British television comedy.

      I studied that finally episode for an English paper when was doing my GCse's looking at imagary and stuff and now know the episode inside out but still laugh. Especially when it comes to Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom or Hear the Words I Sing, Wars a Horrid thing...... Even thinking of it I giggle xxxxx

      That final scene is one of THE most poignant scene in TV history. It moved me and i cried the first time i watched it, and it still stuck with me

    I am very surprised Dad's Army never made it on the list. That was like an iconic classic.
    I feel Last of the Summer Wine should've been on it too.

      Totally agree on both counts. I love non offensive non swearing comedy and I don't like Mrs Brown's Boys. For me it takes a comedy writing genius that doesn't resort to swearing and crudeness.

    "How could a show as great as Fawlty Towers end after only 12 episodes?" you might ask. Because those 12 perfect episodes set the bar so high that it was almost impossible to write 6 more scripts that wouldn't disappoint the viewers.

    am I the only one who remembers "The thin blue line" only ran for 2 series for a total of 12 episodes - so brilliantly funny though

    The list needs to be expanded! The League of Gentlemen, Psychoville, Ripping Yarns, One Foot in the Grave, The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perin, It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Ever Decreasing Circles, The Likely Lads and Dad's Army should all be on this list! I suppose that Father Ted is left out because it's Irish, but it did debut on British TV.

    Keeping Up Appearances was my grandmother's favorite show, we lived with her after my grandfather passed and she passed away 8 years ago. It always reminds me of her. ❤

      Agree. Going back further Steptoe and Son, Hancock, The Rag Trade, The Frost Report, Not Only But Also, The Goodies, Alias Smith and Jones, Little Britain, One Foot In The Grave. The makers of this video obviously lack knowledge of great British comedy. I think they must be 17 years old.

      Little Britain and Bottom don't deserve to be on there. Some Mothers do 'ave 'em hasn't aged well. Surprised to see no Father Ted or Dad's Army.
      Honestly this list has just reminded me of how many fantastic British comedies there have been, and how I feel that there is currently a complete lack of anything good.

      @@mattp1376 admittedly I only saw two episodes of the UK version (one of the US was too much). The first UK episode was redone for NBC in the US, and it stank. The original was no better. The other episode I saw was the one where we saw several scenes from different viewpoints, different languages. Clever, a tour de force, but I didn't care for the characters, most of whom were jokes. The two "straight " characters, the couple we supposedly identified with, I remember the woman belittling the man in front of the others because he fell short in her eyes and (I realize it was only twice) but he would loudly confess his shortcomings and his love instead of walking out on the bitch forever. Glad it makes you laugh, though.

    I do not agree with every show on the list: the "IT crowd" is way too low on the list and there is no "Coupling"
    I didn't expect all my favorite to be on the list but "Father Ted" not being included?
    A ranking of the greatest british comedy shows of all time without "Father Ted" makes the whole list absolutely irrelevant for me!

      Maybe they did the right thing and thought of it as an Irish show, not British. Literally the only British thing about it is that it aired on Channel 4. Everything else about it is Irish

      I think what we all remember about Fawlty Towers is it left us all wanting more. Which, if the writers had run out of ideas, was exactly the right thing to do IMHO. There is nothing worse than a much-loved show struggling on long after the writers have run out of fresh material.

    No Porridge is a disgrace to Ronnie Barkers memory. Amazing show. easily one of the greatest comedies of all time. Also I know Father Ted is an Irish comedy but seeing as it first aired on british tv it qualifies here and somehow doesn't show up

    The rich history of British comedy is in a league of its own. With that said, Fawlty Towers is and will perhaps always be THE SHOW! Comedy gold that stood the test of time!

    Personally, I think Outnumbered deserved a place on this list. It was such a good show with lovable characters, a look into the chaos of family life to which many families could relate!

    How Bottom is not on this list is an absolute travesty. It's pure genius and hilarious slapstick comedy. It was so popular and loved that they did 4 or 5 live shows. The first 3 of them being utterly fiendish and brilliant, the last couple weren't the best though.

    The list neglects true classics like steptoe, dads army,one foot in the grave and rising damp. Its as if comedy largely started in the 80s. A lot of the list are anything but classics

    'Fawlty Towers' - I watched it when it first came out. I was a teenager then ! Here I am at 62 years of age and I still have paroxysms of laughter when I watch the 12 episodes for the nth time.
    It does not age. How did they create 12 such perfect episodes of comedy? Simply mind blowing.

      Yeah, a very good one. Made by creators of "Allo, Allo" if I correctly remember. Even actor playing Rene Artois appears in one episode :). But I think it was omitted as it wasn't so popular outside UK. Still, the writing was brilliant.

    I missed Benny Hill on this list, here in Los Angeles one of our local channels ( 13 KCOP I believe) used to play this regularly and I loved it and Monty Python as a kid. Faulty Towers, the Young Ones, the Office, Bottom, and Ab Fab are also a laugh riot. Need to catch the rest.

    I agree with most of these. I feel like you missed "Grace and Favor/Are You Being Served," "Good Life/Good Neighbors," and "Detectorists." And how could I forget "Jeeves and Wooster" and "A Little Bit of Fry and Laurie?!" There's just too much excellent comedy to choose from.

      @@pizzaboy3946 The show I am referring to was about a couple, the man being Tom Good, and his wife deciding to live off the land, be self-sufficient. His neighbors, the man played by the guy who was the lead in "Yes Prime Minister", I think in the show his name was Jerry, and his wife were buttoned-up British people who couldn't understand what their neighbors were doing. I am pretty sure it was called "The Good Neighbors", but the name may have been changed through the years. I know it was on in the 70's.

    This is a great list. I do think there is something about the classic comedy of DADS ARMY that is timeless. A remarkable cast and a very gentle form of comedy.

    Totally agree with the number one spot. Fawlty Towers is one of my fave comedies, along with Blackadder. However, how could you not include Dad's Army! It should have been in at least the top 5!

      I remember my parents watching Dad's Army in the 1960s when I was a little girl. I'm 68 now - I'm guessing it's a bit too old to make it onto a contemporary list.

    Agreed with most picks. Disappointed in not seeing "Mr. Bean" or "Thin Blue Line" in the mix. Maybe they thought that it would be too much Rowan, but is there such a thing? Jim Broadbent's "Peter Principle"/"The Boss" is quite funny and worth mentioning as well.

      Morecambe and Wise are my all time favourite double act. I do understand why they weren't included though as it wasn't a sitcom. But for British comedy in general they would definately be in my number 1 spot.

    I'm probably the only one who remembers No, Honestly with John Alderton and very young and very delightful Pauline Collins. It used to be on Chicago television at 10:00 pm Sunday nights in the late 1970s (followed by Monty Python's Flying Circus at 10:30).

    Are You Being Served - a bit over the top, but certainly a beloved classic.
    As Time Goes By - never laugh-out-loud. Its quiet, comforting subtlety are what makes it great.

    The British made far too much fantastic comedy to stick within a list of just 20 - I'm old enough to remember Morecambe & Wise, Tommy Cooper, the Two Ronnies and Peter Cook & Dudley Moore. More recently, Ab Fab and Yes Minister/Prime Minister are just two. My Australian-born son would add Black Adder and Red Dwarf to the list. For me though, Allo Allo and Benidorm are my current faves.

      I think my fave moment is when Rodney is going out with tanya(kiwk fit receptionist) and uncle Albert and Del are whispering and planning on putting him off it....the noise from uncle Albert, the faces Del pulls, the entire "wtf" face on Rodney.
