- Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
Today, let's draw with crayons. You know them from when we were small. Using these will actually give you back that feeling of playfulness and flow and fun that you remember from drawing as a kid.
So I will show you what my favorite crayon is, which brand and why, and explain a little bit about their versatality and the fun effects you can create with them.
Then I will show you how I use them in my sketchbook practice and when urban sketching.
This is not a sponsored post. I am simply a fan of Neocolor crayons from Caran d'Ache. They come in two kinds:
-Neocolor I are water resistant, like for example Crayola crayons that you'll find in the supermarket.
-Neocolor II are watersoluble and you can use them kind of like you'd use watercolor pencils, only they are buttery and bright and bolder and more fun.
Materials used in this video:
-Stillman&Birn Sketchbook Beta Series
-Daniel Smith Watercolors
-Pentel Aquash waterbrushpen
-Caran D'Ache Neocolor I&II
-Sailor Fude Calligraphy nib 55 degree angle, filled with Platinum Carbon Black ink
You can create wonderful textures when you combine Neocolor I crayons with watercolor. Because these are wax crayons, they resist water and they resist watercolor.
On top of still wet watercolor, you can use the watersoluble Neocolor II crayons for rich colors and layering.
Your assignment this week:
Grab your crayons or your kids' crayons and have some fun combining them with your other materials. Make a drawing while being playful, curious and exploratorive.
Extra tip: you can also create that texture of a wax base that resists watercolor using a candle. The wax will resist your watercolor wash just like the water resistant crayons do.

Many years ago I took a watercolor course in college. I barely passed. Now with all the many materials available PLUS your fun instructions I’m learning whole new methods and having FUN. I even paint the envelopes for my rent checks just to make the paying less painful😊
That is awesome! Thank you for sharing this. Makes me happy!
Always so much fun to see how you use mixed media. So inspiring. Thanks so much.
You are so welcome!
This was excellent! Thank you 😊 I'm going to give that a go with my Neocolor sets ... they've just been sitting around on the shelf. Now, I know. Thanks again.
Have fun!
Thank you so much for this video❤❤❤ so many things going on my life now, and drawing on my sketchbook helps me to relax and move on. ❤❤❤ And I'm following some of your advice and othhere style. ❤❤❤❤❤
You got this!
Fun video. Thank you! I have neocolor II’s. When I use them I like to put the crayon down and then activate it with my brush. They are gorgeous when activated.
I know right? so bright and colorful!
Hello, thank you for these videos, they inspire me a lot, I would love to buy your book but it is not in Spanish :( but I am very grateful for your videos and the UA-cam translator ❤
You could just look at the images…?
Thank you. Koosje! I feel brave enough to use my crayons now! Your lesson was inspiring. 😊
It'll be fun!
Merci 😊. I was wondering that if you use crayons do you seal it with spray? Thank you
No, I don't.
Great video, I've got some of those crayons somewhere... 😮 It's time to go on a treasure hunt... 🖍️👌🏼😊
Have fun!
@@KoosjeKoene thank you. 👋🏼 (Found them.)

Another very encouraging video from Koosje Koene!
😊
Loved this video. Inspired!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh, wow! This is so nice. I was JUST getting ready to order the Neocolor I crayons (I have the Neocolor IIs) when you said any cheap crayon would do. Just last night I found a box of Crayola's hiding in my craft box! I cannot wait to get home to try this out. Love your videos. Great tips always given.
Oh, good! It'll be great to dust them off an put them to use. And combine them with the water-soluble crayons too.
I love seeing the abstract paintings in your background. Could you share how your drawing practice informs your abstract painting? Your videos always motivate and inspire me.
Thank you so much.
I like working on large canvases, because it's so very different from my sketchbook practice. I am still too much of a beginner to even understand whether or not my drawing practice informs my abstract painting.
I love this, so wonderful ☺☺☺
I'm glad you like it
❤❤❤
😊
Thank you, Koosje! I painted along and loved this video. It was so much fun!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Caran d’Ache Neocolors cost more but I love that they are built to have excellent lightfastness and function more like a fine artist’s material. (Of course anyone can use any crayon if they aren’t selling their original work or if they are scanning it to make a digital result.)
True!
Thanks for this excellent video. Some real good concepts demonstrated.
Glad it was helpful!
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Love it

Thank you for the great tips!
You're welcome!
So are the Neo1 a lot softer ?
softer than what?
@@KoosjeKoene than Neo2 or there is no difference?
@@marzam6369 They are both soft and creamy. I is water resistant, II is water-soluble.
@@KoosjeKoene thank you !
Merci à Toi.😊❤
je t'en pris.
