There's a sense of childlike wonder with a whole new level of creativity when drawing with watercolor crayons.
...I like that. It can even makes the hearth go faster.
I've used the Neocolor II as a primary tool for about 5 years now. They are *great* on hotpress paper. I combine them with water soluble pencils which have precision and a different binder...after I draw for a while I spray the drawing with water and push the colors around with a shaper tool or a water-filled brush pen. They play extremely well with gouache and and regular watercolors. They feel very waxy like a crayon but every stick I've used has a ton of pigment in it (at least of Neocolor II). I can't think of a better water soluble wax pastel crayon.
After buying a set of Neocolor2 at last years usk symposium, I started using them when urban sketching. I find it such a versatile, vibrant and forgiving medium. Thus far I find that mixed media paper works best for me with them. The best tip I can give in using them is: layering. What I also love to do is to exploit the directionality you can get with them - draw with them in a specific direction and then paint in the same direction. And using contrasting colours together. Or use water with them on the bottom layer and then draw with them on top of that. Oh, there’s just so many more ways to use them and mix with other mediums.
❤ agree to all you’re said, I absolutely love them
There is definitely a learning curve for the neocolors but they can have some amazing effects! Also, my favorite colors from them aren't included in the smaller sets. The more natural, lovelier colors (in my opinion) can be bought out of stock to supplement the smaller set. That is what worked for me. I also like using these by scratching them on a small rough cutting board to get some pigment for my wet brush. They do shine on a smoother paper where the pigment dissolves entirely!
Oh! And it helps to use one of your stiffer brushes! Very soft watercolor brushes can't scrub up the pigment as easily.
I really love the neocolor ii - they are fantastic for coloring a large area quickly and then using a waterbrush to make the color fill every crevice. they blend together well on hot press paper. you might try using them to create a vibrant background and then drawing over that with pen & ink?
Teoh, I used Caran D'Ache Neocolor II (water soluable) for years doing figurative drawings and drawing of interiors with lots of detail and patterns. I usually started out drawing outlines of figures and larger shapes with the Neocolor II and then applied washes of pan watercolor, allowing the watercolor crayon to blend in. Then I would go back and do more modeling and layering with the water color crayons, building layers of really intense colors. I agree that they work best on smoother paper, a heavier drawing paper is fine and I never used lots water. I've tried several watercolor crayons and Caron D'Ache is by far the best. I recently started using them again in my urban sketches and purchased the wax resist Neocolor I just to play with and see what happens.
What do you think of the lyra?
I love to use neocolor II, i use them in a way that when I add water I leave traces of the sign that was there before, I like the contrast it creates. I also like to randomly sketch with them and then water it all together to create new colors and textures to use as a base. great video, I actually like the texture on that paper!
I have the neocolor 1 and 2’s and love them. In fact the water soluble ones work really well underneath the water resistant ones. They’re fun for travel as well
I so appreciate, Teoh, you doing videos which add other media to watercolor. Having done watercolor alone for 20 years, I am getting a little bored and ready for this mixed media approach. I have a large set of Caran d’Ache Watersoluble Crayons and really like them. Looking forward to future videos with this kind of experimentation!
Caran d'Ache make a palette which is rough one side and smooth on the other. You could use this to mix the watersoluble crayon colours and to make them into a wash. I have the palette and use it for watersoluble pencils.
I love using the neocolor 2’s on ampersand aquaboards
I am a printmaker and we will use the Neocolor 2 for screen print monotypes. You can sketch directly into the mesh of the screen and then wet it with transparent water based screen print ink and then print. That thalo green is hard to deal with. It's just too bright for anything natural looking.
Teoh’s dwgs always make me relaxed :)
Enjoyed this pastel experiement ! Very interesting
These are a lot of fun, very different then normal watercolor, but in a good way, it makes you experiment, and the brand does, I believe, give the light fast info, but I may be wrong 😶
These were my introduction to watercolor. Love them :)
Thank you once again.
Thanks, Just the vídeo I was looking for ☺️
I only have the Neocolour II but the full set. They have beautiful colours including lots of greens that are better suited for plants. The included colour chart also has lightfast ratings. Unfortunately, these ratings are not easy to find online. I made a video on the set and posted the charts on flickr.
As for the Neocolour I, have seen them used successfully as a resist but only in a very loose style and in colour, not white. I was going to try them but try the Caran d'Ache Neocolor oil pastels at the same time. I am not sure about their consistency though so not sure if this is even a good idea. I was warned and advised to better use a candle instead which is why I have put this on the back burner.
Of course the coverage of any crayon would be better on cold or even hot pressed paper but I think the crayons literally shine in areas where specles of paper (grain) are reserved (for instance for water reflections). Plus, pigments of your wash may be resting on the wax and have to be removed carefully by dabbing if you want to cover a larger area. I am assuming this because this always happens to me when using masking fluid.
I do use the Neocolor water-soluble crayons, and I like them quite well, but I've only used them on very smooth paper.
I use them on cold press paper a lot, it takes time and practice to get used to working with them but once you do they are so versatile and fun to use.
Wow I love the colors!
thank you for sharing your experiences with us, I really enjoy your videos and your blog!
I love the Neocolor II. I'm trying to find all the colors. I currently have 91 of the supposed 126 colors. I use them on all types of paper but with a stiffer brush than my preferred softer brushes for tube/panned watercolors. I dont own any of the neocolor I, but will sometimes use the regular white crayola crayon for resist areas.
This set looks so fun to play with
omg thank you so much for this vid
Wow I was just wondering yesturday if he'd had a chance to try these! Really great use of them!
Oh these look so nice! I’d love to see you try them on hot press paper 😊 have fun playing around with these!
Hahaha, you did not mess up, nevermind! The result is pretty nice. I'm also learning to play with these new watersoluble crayons, they are great! Thanks for the video :)
I liked it:) I just got a set as well along with a white neo1 for highlights.
Neocolor 2 are pastels; works best if you use them like oil pastels and the water to blend them.
And the Neo1s, I use stumps and gamsol to blend
Thanks for this introductory video to Neocolors. I am a big fan of Neocolor IIs -they dissolve so we'll and they are.very pigmented. You should definitely keep playing with them, as you would discover lost of great possibilities with them. They mix well with each other too. I find the 15 set.has tooany bright colours for an urban sketching palette. I would buy either a bigger set (30/40) or buy individual pastels in open stock and choose colours that would work well for urban sketching (more earth colours and neutrals, more natural looking greens, some greys) . A more affordable alternative are Lyra or Jaxon water soluble pastels. Jaxon are made by Mungyo in S.Korea, if it is easier to find Mungyo, that.would be OK too. But I prefer Caran d'Ache, as they are excellent quality and are.available open stock. Have you still painted with Neocolors since this video?
I am so happy you found these :) I LOVE my Neoart (retired) version on the Hot Press pad by Paul Ruebens. Great lightfast ratings and charts listing all the pigments. You can also sharpen them and save the shavings in 1/2 pans and then use like traditional watercolor. Blends are smooth, beautiful and colors are rich and pigmented. Neocolor II are ok but the Neoarts were outstanding you can still find them sometimes on ebay. Next time try rubbing the crayon on a palette or plate and them add water and use like your used too. I think you will have more success. Good luck.
Seems like it would work good for certain sketches, I prefer water colors, but the pastels are a new idea to try out, pretty colors too
...liked it ..your test and the Drawing. Keep up the good way you show us what Art is about,......and that's to have FUN without thinking is this the good way...if it comes from the hearth it's always a good way to go with.........Feel free by doing the things YOU like, not what others tell you, you must like.........
Art is living... It makes you feel like a child 🧒 🎨🎨🎨🎨😍😍❤️😇😇😇👶👶
Good drawing 🤠🤠☺️☺️
Diferent
crayons are still fun
Hi Teoh! I have a small set of the water soluble crayons (I think the same as yours,) and I really don't like them. I have used them only rarely, and do not care for the effects they produce. I don't think you did anything wrong; I have gotten the same results from different papers, and just don't like them. Many people do like them, but I much prefer using watercolor. Thanks for a great video!
Hi your painting is so nice … can you tell me what brush you are using please 🙏😃
I can't really remember which brush. Probably a synthetic brush as it's used for scrubbing to dissolve the crayon
@@teohyc thanks for your reply 🙌
Don't you it as watercolor pencil. These are the best quality crayon you can get. They have the right consistency and softness. I use it as waxy pastel over acrylic underpainting. The result is very very nice. You need a finer grain, but high quality paper so that you can have many layers on top of each other. Use a lot of layers and the result is extremely satisfying.
Would like to see you try on hot press :) also maybe neocolor2 but not 1. :)
Those are basically crayons, right? How do they stack up against Crayola?
Caran d'Ache pastels are much more pigmented and are easier to put down on the paper. Crayola are quite hard and more translucent, they are a different quality, more craft / student grade, whereas Caran d'Ache is artist grade, with excellent lightfastness and high quality pigments. More expensive but also much higher quality. Check out Black bean CMS in YT if.you want to see great art with Crayola Crayons.
