One more tip I haven't mentioned in the video: when flying with fountain pens, make sure they are fully filled, so no air can be pushed out when the cabin pressure changes. Don't use them during the flight, and especially not when taking off and landing. You could also wrap them in paper towel an/or in a ziplock bag in case you're afraid they may leak. I never had any trouble with any of my fountain pens myself. To be safe, on a flight don't use brushpens like Pentel Color Brushpens, and also Posca paint markers. I've heard stories of inky hands and clothes on flights!
Materials shown in this video, in order of appearance:
-Sailor fude fountain pen with 55degree calligraphy nib
    -Platinum Carbon Black ink
    -Daniel Smith watercolors
-watercolor box: this came as an empty metal watercolor palette (no brand)
and empty pans, to fill from tubes of watercolor
    -Pentel Aquash waterbrush
    -Pilot Parallel pen, 1.5 mm
    -Pentel pocket Brushpen
    -Derwent inktense Black
-Faber-Castell Pitt Oil Base pencil extra soft
    -Derwent Lightfast Midnight Grey
-Lyra Super - 4-in-1 Colour Pencil
-Caran d’Ache Neocolor 1 wax crayons (water resistant)
-Caran d’Ache Neocolor 2 wax crayons (watersoluble)
    -Caran d’Ache Luminance colored pencils
    -Corner clips (Amazon)
    -Small scissors
    -Uhu glue stick
    -Alphabet stamps (Amazon)
    -Faber-Castell Pencil sharpeners
    -48-slots canvas pencil roll (amazon)
-Foldersys pencil case, 4 compartments, size A5
    -MT Washi tape
    -Folding camping stools (Amazon)
    -Folding sit mat (Amazon)
    Inks suitable for fountain pens:
Platinum Carbon Black ink, SketchInk by Rohrer&Klingner, Deatramentis ink.
Let me remind you that picking art materials is very personal. Your favorite supplies are probably different than mine. Try to be smart about what you pack, according to the length and goal of your trip.
-Maybe you are going on a business trip and you won't even have that much time to draw. Then you might just want to pack a pen and some watercolors, or a bunch of colored pencils will be enough to fill your needs while you are out and about and while you are away.
-But if you are going on a trip where you will be spending lots of time drawing, then you can bring a little bit more and every day you can make a selection of the stuff that you have brought with you.
Be creative, have fun, be flexible. You got this. And of course, if you want to take a trip to draw and draw and draw some more, then well, I do teach workshops on really wonderful locations. So check out my website KoosjeKoene.com/workshops to see my schedule and see tickets that are still available.

Great video, as always so helpful. A university tutor of mine used to say all you need to draw, when out and about, is a water soluable pen and spit 😂😂😂

This was interesting. It is amazing what we can fit into a pouch. I took a trip last Summer. I did great with my small black pouch. It has a couple different compartments and some pockets for the sharpener, erasers etc. I had a small Daler Rowney sketchbook. I have another small sketchbook. I can't leave home without these things that make my life happy. Thank you for sharing.

I’ve been filling up a dropper bottle (as is common for acrylic miniature paints) to refill my fountain pen with. No need for a big ink bottle or a syringe.

I have an EDC Pouch I carry everywhere with my Mixed media sketchbook. It is an old Delde pouch, the kind that slides down and stands up and holds pens and pencil. I carry my 20+ Faber-Castell some micron pens in various colors, a Twsbi fountain pen, pencil sharpener, one Derwent water paintbrush,Micron portable painter set, and the sleeve of an old T-shirt for a cloth. I am amazed how much I get in it. 😮🤪

With the stool, I’d also add if you’re disabled and use a walking stick, you can get them either fold down seats, and I fyoure in the uk most towns and cities have a notability and/or dial a ride centre near the centre f town, where you can hire a walker, or wheelchair or mobility scooter for the day. Wonderful - thank you. It’s always fun to see what other people’s supplies 😊 I’m impressed that with how pared down your supplies are! That’s a great system.
I overpack by taking several brushes, which take up a lot of room. Using waterbrushes would be liberating, but I can’t seem to make them work for me.

This is the PERFECT video for me! I'm going on a trip to the shore later this month and I was wondering just what to take. This gives me a great idea how to take a little bit of everything, without overpacking! (I took notes while watching so I can pack my little art kit later)

Hi Koosje, Your videos help me a lot to just go out and DO 🙃 Just one question, you mention your sketchbooks and I tried to find them but couldn't. You also don't mention them here. Would you post a link? With the describtion alone I wasn't able to find them. Keep in mind, I'm 51, so maybe too rusty on the internet🤔😉☺ Thanks a lot!!🥰

Sketchbooks that I use often are Hahnemühle Nostalgie (not watercolor paper), and Hahnemühle Watercolour book. I also like the watercolor sketchbooks from the Travelogue series, but those are harder to find in The Netherlands.

Koosje, I believe Danny Gregory mentioned that you were a professional photographer before you decided to teach art. If this is the case, do you still carry any camera gear with you when you travel or are you strictly now a smartphone and sketchbook person? Photography has been a hobby of mine for years (drawing was first, when I was still in grade school and through college) and sometimes I think it would just be too much to try and take both sets of equipment...even though I can go with my camera and one lens and be creative with that limitation. I would be curious to find out if the photographer in you is still coming out occasionally. Thank you for some great tips on how to pack for my next outing!

    • @KoosjeKoene

Indeed I was a professional photographer but nowadays I carry my sketchbook to capture moments. I have my smartphone to take pictures when I need to scratch the itch.
