- Welcome to the first video of a new series where I'll be sharing my entire coloured pencil collection with you. We're starting with one of my favourite brands, Caran d'Ache Luminance. These top quality pencils come in a range of 100 colours - I have 69 colours and I'll be swatching these for you today. I hope that this video will be a good resource for those of you who enjoy working with coloured pencils already, and those who would like to start. It's always useful to see colours swatched on camera before you buy, and it was fun to share these with you! The next video will cover my Derwent Lightfast and Derwent Drawing collection.

SURPRISE VIDEO! 🎉
yay 😂
🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
We like surprises!
Natasha did you know Caran D'Ache relased 24 new colours on July 24th taking the colours in the Luminance pencils to 100(matt)
Hi Natasha, Bleu de Nimes is called after Nimes, a city in France where first a sturdy fabric was made. It was called serge de Nimes. Joseph Andre was a silk industrialist who created Serge de Nimes in the 17th century. Through the years it became known as denim and is the origin of denim. Levi Strauss just ran with it and made it famous in America
Thank you for this little bit of history! :)
Thank you! This is new to me! 😘
Fascinating! I didn’t know that denim was a French invention.
So interesting! Thanks for sharing.
Love the sound of pencil on paper and especially love my luminance!
I love the Luminance sepia in all its percentages, but others that I love are,Nightshade,Cinnamon,Midnight Blue 70%,Dark Turquoise,Middle Verdigris,Naples Ochre and Beryl Green.(Matt)
I am not a pencil girl but ordered 4 of these pencils because of your video! Payne grey is my fav color in all medias!
Always a gift to have a bonus video from you, coloured pencils have become such an integral part of your work and add a depth and richness.I love that the Luminance have percentages of colours,I. Think they may be the only brand that does this, they are great for mixed media too.a reference Swatch book is a great idea too,a great addition to your studio practice too and useful for creating colour palettes.(Matt)p.s Payne's Grey!!!
Natasha! Just discovering your world and I absolutely love it! The way you talk about color makes my heart pitter patter 😊
That's so lovely, thank you!
Paynes gray. Your video makes me want to explore more these pencils. Thank you
They are also my favorite pencils🥰every time I travel to Europe, I buy some new colors of luminance ❤
Thank you so much! I started using these about a year ago after seeing your videos! They are gorgeous colors and the feel of the pencils are so different!
I just love how they feel when I work with them. :)
Sweet! Thank you Natasha for sharing 💜
Payne's Grey!! woohoo!
I love the way you do swatches, they're so fascinating to watch ☺
Thanks so much. :)
The title alone made me sooooo jealous 😄
Aw, don't be jealous! ;)
Love these pencils!
Payne’s gray is also one of my favorite colours. Right after indigo😊.
Thank you for an inspiring video.
I was swatching the Derwent drawing will i was playing the video.
Looking forward to the next video😊
payne's grey. I fine your swatching videos just so relaxing... and of course, lots of lovely colours go on my wish list
Thank you! I’m so pleased that you enjoy them.
So many pretty colours to chose from!!
Paynes Grey is a very lovely color. Thank you for the calming and informative video, Natasha! ♥
Paynes Grey! Great color- love the variety offered by Caran d’ache. Thank you for your swatching videos Natasha. You have always been a great resource for me when I am looking for insight into which colors of pencils or paints that I might “need” to add to my collection.
Thank you! I'm so glad that you find the videos useful!
I have a “Master Swatch Book” with all my watercolours, pencils etc - it’s so useful! I added page numbers and an Index so it’s easier to find colours or add to pages when I get new materials. And Payne’s Grey is also one of my favourite colours 😊
Ever get that feeling that you've found your people? I just had that. Mind if I ask if it's a book or binder? 🎨♥🖌 I just finished making a book to test all of my watercolors (like a page sized swatch card with several tests) and an index would save a lot of time in the long run. Thanks for the great idea!
@@polgara28 I just used a large multi-media sketchbook that someone gave me and that I didn’t really have any use for - it’s now one of my most used items 😎 It saves me from ordering doubles as I can quickly check what I own. I’m planning to scan it to keep an online version on my phone for when I’m in an art shop!
@@brigitteitg genius!
Great idea!!
Paynes Grey - for example - could be layered with yellow/ochre tones to create the greens you need. They may expect the pencil artist to layer... That would be my guess. Always love your swatching and chatty comments. 😘
Payne’s grey all the way! Classic swatching! 😁 Another excellent video Natasha! 😁🎨👩🏻🎨💖😘 xxx
Thanks baby! 💖😘 xxx
"Payne's Grey All The Way" would be the perfect title of Natasha's autobiography or a book of her magical artwork (Matt)
Stunning colors! An absolutely beautiful book.
Thank you so much!
Paynes Grey......and one of my favourites colours in every medium😍 Playing catch up due to work commitments but its always lovely to find one of your relaxing swatching videos waiting, thank you❤️
Payne's Grey! Thanks for being a relaxing lunch view of a line that I intend to explore when I use up some things on hand.
Paynes gray to you Natasha! I did make it to the end. But I have found that this type of video is so relaxing as I am coloring in my coloring books. Thanks again for your subtle voice and kind words!yay!
I loved watching this Natasha. I had my swatches on my lap while watching this to see which ones I had! As a matter of interest I counted up all my Luminance and I have 61 so I don’t feel quite as guilty about buying more after seeing yours.😅💓 I’ve recently bought the ‘Light Flesh’ (as it’s still called on the website) and when the actual pencil arrived it was called Butternut. A lovely name!x
Payne's Grey. Loved watching you swatching, thank you!
what a loverly video, thank you 🤩 It’s relaxing because of the neat swatches done in colour order but also uplifting cos of the different colour palettes. I loved the greens and yellows particularly but also the aubergines which I don’t have any of and also the two lighter paynes grey which I wouldn’t normally gravitate towards.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks so much for your relaxing beautiful videos.
Your fave Payne's grey!
I like the idea of an art materials log book. I understand the need for more greens.
My pleasure!
Just what I needed, a Natasha Swatches video ❤
I hope you enjoyed it, Christine!
Great video. I love paynes grey. Much love & *Virtual hugs* from Australia xxx ❤
Payne's Grey! Thank you for another interesting and relaxing video 😊
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
Payne's grey - my favourite too. And yes - always more greens!
Team 'More Greens'!
this is so helpful, especially the Paynes Gray :-)
I haven’t watched this yet but I’m very excited because I’m going through a Luminance obsession at the moment!😉 See you after!xx
Ooh, brilliant! Hope you enjoy it, Jess! xx
Payne's Grey, of course! What a lovely book that will be!
Paynes gray ftw, sacrilege to skip out before the end, thx for this oddly apropos video, currently deciding which luminance pencils to purchase this week. Think ima do a smaller set then grab some open stock so I'm not getting many I won't use!
Ahhh! You made this video right in time for my upcoming trip to Blick!!!
As for favorite Luminance colors: Indanthrone Blue, Deep Sap Green, and Sepia.
The luminance pencils have definitely changed what colors I use in my work because they are so subtle and moody.
You see, I knew about that! Just had a feeling. ;)
Love a payne's grey also. I loved this- so relaxing. Thank you . I also appreciate the steady camera work and slow close ups of colours. As someone who sometimes attempts landscapes I have given myself an pyramid of colour needs, so to speak. In bottom to top order are greens ...many many greens because the landscape here is full of greens. Then blues as the sky is so changable. Browns and greys for all the non green landscapes. Yellows, reds pinks and purples just a few of each . I wonder if you find you have more green pencils in the other brands you are planning to swatch? If not then definitely would be looking to expand in that colour hue. Derwent lightfast pencils have a great range of earthy rich greens...some of which I think you have. Looking forward to the next video.
Loved this . I have Derwent watercolour pencils the only pencils I use them for texture after my finished artwork PAYNES GREY I love so paynes grey Natasha thanks for sharing ❤
Thanks Deborah! I've tried the Derwent Inktense, but not the watercolour pencils. Love Derwent! x
My most used/favorite colors are Brown Ochre, Perylene Brown and Crimson Alizarin.
Thanks to you I've grown to love Paynes Grey🎉 in almost every medium😂
Ha ha, you're welcome! ;)
Payne’s grey ! Of course !
Payne’s grey. I’m into russet and dark indigo at the moment 😊
Paynes Grey. Thank you Natasha. As always enjoy listening and watching you work while I’m sketching and drawing. Yes please to the Derwent ranges as that is what I use. I created a floral and leaf swatches with both the full range of lightfast and drawing pencils, inspired by one of your paint swatches. Would love to hear your thoughts to how they compare with the luminance. Happy arting 😊 🙏🏻
Oh yeah....payne's grey is my #1 (carbothello, inktense...)... lovely luminances...on my list...
I love my Luminance pencils. I started off with a 20 set and collected more along the way. Mostly skin tones, because I draw portraits and the colors are gorgeous. The reds, greens and greys are also my favorite! They're not typical colors you can find in any other set.
I feel like Luminance has so many unusual colours/tones, and they have a sophistication to them (if that's the right word).
Payees Grey ! Love to see all the color range as I only have 18 Luminance pencils…..So far 😊
I was inspired to give colored pencils a try after watching a few of your swatching videos and it turns out I LOVE combining it with watercolor! I picked up a few of the Luminance and Derwent Lightfast pencils last weekend and I think you'd like Perylene Brown in the Luminance - it's similar to a quinacridone brown madder or perylene maroon in watercolors. Thank you for the inspiration!
I'm so glad that you were inspired! Enjoy your new pencils!
payne’s grey🩶 thank you for the extra video 💕 is there a possibility to someday have a video on how you finalize/fix/varnish (i do not know the proper terms, sorry!) your mixed media drawings and paintings that are made on paper? I am so very lost on what I should do with mine after I manage to finish one😅 Do you use an all purpose fixative or do you have several different varnishes for different mediums, do you varnish in between mediums or do your preferred mediums even need varnishing at all? Or more simply put, what mediums should be fixed on the paper and what mediums do not need an overcoat to prevent… all the things that need preventing? Anyway, just an idea for a video if you ever feel like your short on them! Lots of lovely days!❤
Payn"s grey! ❤
I’ve checked and Light Flesh is now named Butternut. Great video, found some pencils from this I want to add to my collection
That's a much nicer name! I'm so glad the video was helpful. :)
Payne’s gray 💙💙💙
Payne's Grey! A wonderful color!
It is indeed! :)
As it happens, Payne’s Grey is also one of my favourites. But to be fair I love all their muted pencils. I’ve the full set (Christmas present a few years ago) and the bright ones hardly get any use. I suppose I need to draw more tropical birds. Looking forward to the Derwent swatches ❤
This is what would happen if I bought a set!
Payees grey!!!❤
Paynes Grey ❤
Payne's Grey! 😁
I swore I wasn't going to buy any Luminance pencils because they're quite expensive, and I have full set syndrome. 😆 But, I ended up getting the set of 40 when I came across a really good deal.
So far, out of that set, my favorites are Violet Brown, Olive Yellow, Silver Grey, Dark Sap Green (looks more like a dark forest type of green), Burnt Sienna, Light Cobalt Blue and Green Ochre. Oh, and the Burnt Ochre 10%. They're all really nice though. I guess I'll just add a couple at a time until my FSS is satisfied. 😂
Payne’s Grey🥰
Paynes grey. Natasha, I think you might like Olive Brown 10%.
Payne's gray (one of my favorites).
Mauve comes to mind when thinking pinkish violets
Paynes Grey! I have about 50 luminance now, I love them! It’s hard to narrow down but my top favourites are the Payne’s Grey trio, Dark Indigo, and French Grey, honourable mentions to violet pink, chromium oxide green and burnt sienna 10%. I’ll stop there or I’ll end up reeling off my whole collection lol. x
Good choices! x
Paynes grey all the way🎉❤
Payne's Grey!
Payne's Grey Hurray!!
Payne's Grey ☺️
Paynes Grey! I don’t have any luminance but I’m loving all these colors! I took a picture of your swatches and will use it as a wish list. 🩶
Payne's Grey. ❤
That's illuminating great pencils but expensive.
Payne's Grey and Burnt Sienna
What a great combo!
I think you’ve probably mentioned it in another video but which sharpener do you recommend for luminance? 💜
I have a KUM brass double-hole sharpener that works really well!
@@NatashaNewtonArt thank you!
Paynes gray 😊
What type/weight/color paper are you using for swatching your Luminance CP’s? Thanks 20:01
This is a book from Choosing Keeping with ivory/cream paper, smooth and lightweight (not sure of the gsm etc.)
Payne's Grey 🤍
Very interesting comment by missjamm31 about where denim got it’s name.
oooh, a book from Choosing Keeping!
Such a lovely book!
@@NatashaNewtonArt It is! I recognised immediately. Visiting Choosing Keeping is on my bucket-list.
🤖 Opera Pink is also my favorite.
Payne’s grey
Hi Natasha, I asked this strange question on a video you posted 10 months ago but that I just viewed today. Then I saw this more current video of yours and thought I would re-ask the question here in case you don’t see comments on your older videos. The strange question is this: do you organize and store your colored pencils by brand, or by color? I have always kept my pencils separated by brand but as my collection has gotten quite large, like yours, I’ve been wondering if it would be more convenient to sort and store my pencils by color so that I don’t have to look through every collection when I’m looking for a color. What do you do?
What pencil sharpener do you have? I like the way your pencils are sharpened. Thank you for filming this, it’s lovely to watch and I realise I need to start collecting luminance, I have spectrum noir but I’m not enamoured of them xx
I use a brass KUM sharpener, and also a Mitsubishi KH-20 Desk Sharpener for extra long and sharp points!
@@NatashaNewtonArt thank you x
Light Flesh 10% was changed to "Butternut"
and the Dark Flesh colors were changed to "Warm Earth"
Ah, thanks for letting me know! Much nicer names. :)
