Noticing and Drawing Repetition

- Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
In today's drawing demonstration, you'll see me drawing in a café. I planned to draw people, but as I sat down, people were leaving and by the time I had my coffee and sketchbook open, the place was completely empty. So I pivoted and came up with a solution for this "problem". Because there is always something to draw. When I looked around, I noticed how there was a certain rhythm, a pattern, of all the chairs. The repetition in the room of all the shape and color of the chairs caught my eye, so that would be the focus of my drawing today.
I used the "blob method"; big shapes of color first, then line.
Soon enough, two people came in, so I was able to add some figures to bring live to this otherwise very still scene.
I had a great time, doing this drawing meditation during a coffee break at a wobbly table. The camera was mounted on the wobbly table, so you'll see that the video image is not quite steady. Hopefully it adds to the urban sketchers feeling of being on location, and you enjoy it.
Materials used in this video:
-Hahnemühle Nostalgie Sketchbook, size A6
-Kwik Stix tempera / gouache poster paint sticks
-Caran d'Ache Luminance coloured pencil (dark phthalocyanine green, 719)
-One Americano coffee at Livingstone Coffee in Amersfoort
Your assignment this week:
Explore and draw something that has a certain repetition. If that's too tricky, or you can't find anything suitable - then don't overthink it, but instead use your time well and just draw whatever catches your eye. Have fun!

Love watching you draw with inspiring narrative. Thank you very much.
I’m glad you like it!
Just viewed your vid for 6-11-24 and went searching for other DTTs on coloring swatches first then detail shapes - a great exercise and fun way to draw ‘in reverse’
….thank you☕️✏️
Wonderful! Thanks for watching and exploring my channel.
Whoa whoa whoa! Gouache sticks are a thing and none of you thought to tell me?! Shame 😂 this is a beautiful piece!
You are so inspiring Koosje 👍🎨and I really love the way you talk about your whole art process and experience. Thank you so much for sharing. 🌸🖊
You're welcome.
Very interesting. Thank you.
You're welcome!
I think having only two people to sketch adds to the sketch. If the sketch were only about a bunch of chairs and tables it would not be as much of an attention getter. The people sitting there are your focal point and one’s eyes are drawn over the chairs to them. I like that type of composition. Great job. It goes to show one’s initial plan failure often sets up a better plan. -OkieSketcher1949
I agree, the people bring life to the place.
this is so interesting. i would’ve got intimidated by so much detail in the setting to even start but how you explain blocking in the main shapes first make so much sense. it’s interesting to see how the detail has built up bit by bit.
If you just start with one thing, then the next and the next, it feels less intimidating than when looking at the whole scene and wanting to capture it all.
Loved this video Koosje! Great fun sketch 🙏
Thanks Taria!
I love the way this starts out with the repeating color then adds in the lines. The color, even with the pattern, is more accent and the lines are the focus. Another different way to approach capturing a scene. And congrats on making a new friend!
Isn't it exciting that there so many approaches?
yay for making a coffee friend, always handy when you want a good cup of coffee or when short a few pennies 😀
True!
What an amazing drawing from just gouache and a single colored pencil. So much character! I love this channel. ❤
Thank you!
haha way to pivot! I had that happened to me before when I show up near closing time. I should use my Kwik sticks more too. Thanks, as always, for the inspiration. BTW, I LOVE that necklace with a hint of turquoise
Thanks for watching! And the necklace, I will tell my friend who made it!
Thank you for reminding me I have Kwik Stix in my art stash but I never use them! This was inspiring 🎨
It's about time to take them out an play. Have fun!
You inspire me to draw every day. ❤
Good to know that we're drawing along daily!
ABSOLUTELY loved this video. Thank you so much. This is EXACTLY what I’m looking for in terms of urban sketching and how to edit a busy scene. I LOVED your commentary. Thank you again. I feel like i was sitting with you and having a coffee and learning at the same time.
Thank you, Tracey, I'm happy to "have coffee" with you on Tuesdays! Glad it's helpful.
😍😍😍 hermoso!
Love your talk, not just your beautiful drawing, about your new friend ❤
Things happen through art, I love it!
Oh, I love this video! This is so inspiring. I always wanted to try drawing in location. But I have a hard time finding subjects. I love how encouraging you are when it comes to wobly drawing coz thats how I find my mine and sometimes its hard to find confidence with it. 🙂
Everything is interesting as soon as you start drawing it!
Wobbly and wonky is part of the deal, when drawing. Otherwise, let AI do it, right?
I love how different end eye catching your style is :) thank you for the tips beautiful artist 🌸
What a fun and inspiring demo, Koosje - you’ve taught me some good things here. And more important, you’ve helped me feel that sense of joy that drawing should create in us. Thank you! 👏
yay, I'm so glad!
Love to watch you draw❤. Thank you for your videos!
You’re welcome!
Very cool post. I always love your drawings and sketchbook style.
Thanks!
It's funny you mentioned Picasso because when we saw that woven chair caning in a café, the first thing we thought was that is was reminiscent of Cubist paintings where printed oilcloth and actual chair caning were used along with painted representations. Textures and patterns can evoke powerful sense memories! Interesting use of gouache sticks, BTW- the glue stick style dispenser really makes them ideal for a compact sketch kit!
Wow, I guess that unconsciously I channeled my inner Pablo Picasso!
I really enjoy your videos and they give me confidence to just have a go. Thank you 😊
That's awesome, Shelley!
Amazing,so much fun to watch you draw.
Your drawings are always ever so charming dear Koosje ! You always bring a smile to my face and that warm feeling in my heart ! That’s what art is all about after all ! Hope others feel the same as the world becomes a better place and that’s thanks to You !!! Wish you a great week ! Warmest regards...Lorraine 🎨😁🤗
touching hearts is indeed, I think, what art can do. Thank you, Lorraine!
Love your video! Thanks for sharing
You're welcome!
Hello Koosje! Inspiring video. Thanks for sharing.
Glas you like it, Tyra!
You are simply amazing 😉
Well I don't know about that, but thank you...
Hi, Koosje. Thanks for yet another inspiring video.
I'd want to ask you about your setup when shooting your sketching on location. Seen a couple of videos on how to make a setup for filming at a desk or a studio, but I'd like to get some ideas how to film on location.
Hi, for filming on location, I use my phone. It's not even the newest or best but it works. I use a flexible phone holder that clips onto the table, and on the other side holds the phone. Something like this one: www.amazon.com/Gooseneck-Flexible-Bracket-Kitchen-Samsung/dp/B07MWZCVLR
@@KoosjeKoene Thanks. Looks like a good setup. I'll look into it.
Is this cafe in Amsterdam? I am really keen to visit it
It's in Amersfoort
Are the gouache sticks water soluble?
No they aren't.
