We have to remember the recorded version couldn't sound so great if its not present in the performer. The recording only captures what's actually happening albeit somewhat "pure" in that there's noting but voice and instruments to tape. If they suck live not much can really make it better and we still call it music.
The story is that he and Randy were in a music store and saw a flute in the window. Burton ended up buying the flute and of all things played it for the first at a concert that evening, not having played the instrument at all before that. Sounds crazy but that is what happened!
Burton had a voice that could not be mistaken for someone else's. He really was amazing. I love so many of Guess Who songs. Sour Suite, American Woman, No time, Dancing Fool, and the list goes on. Burton you rocked!

I agree with that that Jimmy B. Just look at there pedals boards. Back then they used a distortion box, wah-wah pedal or nothing at all! Bands today in concert are trying to create the sound from the studio. To me I rather listen to them raw than replicate the studio sound!
All of them were good. I had them on eight track. Riding around in my 64 Chevelle Malibu SS. Two cases full of tapes plus more. So many bands. Everyone loved to ride with me to see bands play.

This song would have gone nowhere without Burton's angelic vocal performance. On the other hand, Burton has never written a song with this much soul, IMO. I love these two together.
I took a flute course in college as an elective and my professor taught me how to play that flute part. I still play it now and then. Bill Hailey of "Rock Around the Clock" fame used to live two blocks from my folks house.
Burt voice is one of the few that seem to get better with age.. true Canadians icon!. Randy playing was great a jazz feel that rocked at the same time.
A friend of mine used to hang out with Burton Cummings in Winnipeg when they were just starting out. Burton used to ask him for rides downtown because nobody had a car back then. He said they were incredibly serious musicians, they studied and practiced intensely and took their craft to another level.
I remember back in the 70's..driving around with one of my buddies singing songs we were listening on the 8 track..and he said: Your natural voice is like Burton Cummings! I remember thinking, even at the time at 17....that is the greatest complement I may ever have. It was.

My favorite Guess Who song. I saw another interview with Randy Bachman where he talked about learning jazz chords, which is what I think makes his music sound so different than other rock bands.

I don't know which is more phenomenal, the melody or Burton's vocals. This timeless classic never gets old.
