More good Cars songs include Let The Good Times Roll, My Best Friends Girl, Your All I've Got Tonight, and Dangerous Type. Dangerous Type is probably my favorite, although I like all that I listed. I almost forgot Shake It Up.
This song was heavilly used on Live Aid television pieces around 1985, the video accompanying it was of the children and people in Africa which was what the concert was raising money for, very emotional at the time
The Cars changed music forever in 1978. Same year many great new bands came out like Van Halen. The Cars were known for throwing new sounds / instruments into their songs. The band had dual power vocalists with Benjamin Orrs smooth voice (on this song) and Ric's quirky voice and lyrics. YOU have to listen to their first album's songs "Just What I Needed" "My Best Friend's Girl" "Good Times Roll", "Moving in Stereo". Back when you didn't have music streaming this was one of those albums you could listen to front to back both sides and LOVE every song.
My favorite Cars song. Ric Ocasek sang lead on many of their hits, but Benjamin Orr is the singer on this track. He sadly passed away just after his 53rd birthday in 2000 from pancreatic cancer, just 5 months after his diagnosis
My favorite Cars song as well about a very tough subject. Trying to take care of someone dealing with deep depression is no joke. In the song the writer is asking the one he loves who's gonna drive you home tonight?
Being a child of the 80s, I know the song well. It's memorable for me much more recently because I heard it on the radio after I had my Mother evaluated for dementia. The lyrics are very apt, because I had to bail her out of several situations that she had gotten herself into. This was six years ago. She passed this March. Make sure you tell your loved ones you love them often, because there might come a time when they won't remember it.
Some time in the 80s I found a cassette tape on the side of the road. Using a trusty number 2 pencil I fixed the ribbon. It was a Cars tape and it was glorious.
@@GeorgeMaster-xg7lg idk? About his tape but I had a RUSH tape that got soaked in beer, flushed it with tap water ,let it dry a couple day and it was perfect.
I was in high school when that song was released; it's been in the background at some events in my life since then. It was a treat to share your first time hearing it.
The Cars were not focused on live performances and found steady income for decades marketing their music to your favorite Hollywood movies from 85-95. You have undoubtedly heard many of their songs in movies!
The Cars were somewhat unique in that they had two lead singers, Ric Ocasek (rhythm guitar) and Benjamin Orr (bassist). While this song was written by Ocasek, the lead was sung by Orr. Sadly, Benjamin Orr died of pancreatic cancer in 2000, prior to the band's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
It's still crazy to me that bands like The Cars took so long to get into the hall of fame yet there were other non rock related artists inducted long before for no real contribution.
Diane, it sounds familiar, because you also heard this in the movie Transformers. The movie was released in 2007. The scene where the song is played. Takes place when Shia LeBoeuf gives Megan Fox a ride home. 😉 The song was produced in 1985.
The Cars were an amazing band and I loved them starting as a teen in the 80s. Both of their lead singers, Ben and Ric, had very different voices and styles but they both worked so well. I think my favorite song with Ben Orr singing is probably "Just What I Needed" and my favorite song with Ric Ocasek on lead vocals is probably "You Might Think". They had a lot of good high energy cheerful songs and they had some great videos during the heyday of MTV. Most of their songs would give lead guitarist Elliot Easton a guitar solo, and I always enjoyed those. Dang it, now I want to find all my Cars tapes and CDs and play them for the rest of the day. 😀
The song Moving in Stereo by The Cars was featured in the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I was in my 20's during the 80's. I loved every day of that decade.
Going to high school in early 80's, Car's were the band on MTV daily, all songs seem to make you think What??, while were popular to dance too, or just rock out! Plus, they had some of the most beautiful girls in their videos.
I can listen to this song on repeat, because it's gorgeous. I can also listen to this song endlessly, because I know the girl he's singing about, and many of us do. The hot mess who you think your love can save. Maybe the song is even introspective. What a departure from the Cars regular content, though, and what a masterpiece.
I vaguely recall a local (Baltimore-his hometown) classic rock station playing a significant number of the Cars songs when Ric passed in 2019. They were one of the 80s bands that dominated MTV way back when, with the likes of Huey Lewis & the News, Menudo, Spandau Ballet, etc. That was a fun stop on Diane's Musical Motorcade. Cheers, Diane! 💚
The Cars released their debut album in the late 70s, and were a combination of rock and new wave. They had nearly 20 hit singles from the late 70s into the early 90s, with their biggest album, Heartbeat City, spinning off a number of singles that were also made into iconic and hugely popular videos on MTV. These videos used a variety of then-new computerized techniques and were ground-breaking at the time. My favorite of those hits and videos was Magic, but all of the songs from that album featured Ric Ocasek's future third wife, model Paulina Porizkova - she'd been hired for the first video when Ric was still married to his second wife, who he divorced in 1989, marrying Paulina soon after. My very favorite Cars song is Let's Go, from their second album Candy-O. It's full of joy and energy and is a perfect driving, sing-along song - though to be fair, that's true of most of their music.
Our US Navy ship was in dry dock, in Boston. 1988. A couple buddies and me happened upon Ric, inside a bar there. No Paula, but we waited around for a while. Love the Cars. Many riffs run through my mind.
Love The Cars. I was in my wild teens in the 80s. Geils Band • Jump by Van Halen • Venus by Bananarama That should keep you jumpin’
It is NOT about driving someone home after last call. It is about mental issues. I lived with my ex who had bi-polar and struggled with it for 15 years until she lost her battle and this song 1,000% makes sense to me.
My wife suffered from mental abuse for being too pretty. And then when time finally caught up with her & she lost the power she used to have over men, it just broke her. She was a legit 9 for many years. When she’d have “tantrums” I’d start singing this song and she’d actually get a grip and stop taking me for granted, until next time.
This music video doesn’t help affirm anyone’s thoughts about what the song means. Clearly we have people, particularly a woman, in distress, but then we have mannequins moving around, the singer sitting at a little chair-desk, other odd things here and there.
They were my favorite band back from about 1979 until the mid to late 80's. Their first two albums are still amongst my favorites of all time. The drummer, David Robinson, had been in the band The Modern Lovers. The next band I really got into was Talking Heads, and their keyboardist/guitarist, Jerry Harrison, had also been in The Modern Lovers.
While "Drive" is a nice song, and their biggest chart hit, it's actually fairly atypical of Cars music, which generally tends to be a lot more upbeat. Most of the other songs people are suggesting are more indicative of what you would expect of a Cars song. In particular, "You Might Think" is very fun video.
I was 18 when Drive was released. Though it has been a while I've heard it last, listening it now i could still remember the lyrics, end the melody will never go away. As for movies and other entertainment that have used the song, the following are the ones I am aware of: A 1984 episode of the American soap opera Santa Barbara (you weren't born yet) and 2013 American TV series The Carrie Diaries. It was also used in the 2007 film Transformers, playing on the radio in Sam Witwicky's car, Bumblebee. It was also used in the series Everybody Hates Chris, in the episode " Everybody Hates the Car " in 2009. At least the last two are still available on streaming platforms and Transformer as DVD/Blu-ray as well. Or maybe you have heard it on the radio, it is still on occasionally (do you listen to radio?). A great segue to a great song to react to: "Video killed the radio star" by the Buggles. But you must have heard that, it was the first video broadcasted by MTV. 😁
This song brings back memories of being out on my own for the first time after joining the USAF and getting sent to an Air Force Base in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Ric Ocasek, was from Baltimore, and the band still gets lots of airplay in central Pennsylvania. Great band. Loved it. I believe the song was about a relationship that was on the rocks.
Pronounced okay-sek. This is a fantastic band! So many great songs so many vybz. They were true pioneers and every song touches you in some way. This particular song is definitely about having a breakdown and the need for help. Check out My Best Friend's Girlfriend, Let the Good Times Roll and Candy-O. RIP Ben Orr who injected so much pathos and smooth vocals to the songs.
As a fan of 'The Cars' and the band 'Heart', they both share these similarities; both bands were formed in the mid-70's, and DIDN'T have their respective lead singers sing vocals on their highest charting songs. 'Drive' was lead vocal by Benjamin Orr, and Nancy Wilson of 'Heart' lead vocal 'These Dreams'. Side note, Benjamin Orr's solo album 'The Lace' was outstanding! Lastly, Paulina Porizkova and Ric Ocasek met while making this music video.
I knew of the Cars just did not have time to listen to their music. When I did find time to listen to music, I would times get to hear the Cars at work when one of my coworkers like Punk and such. This was when I got to listen to Berlin also. It took a short while for me to start liking the band, as this was around 1984-86. Then I got station to Bethesda Naval Hospital. No one listen to the Cars or Berlin. So, I bought a few CDs of each group and played them after work continued working. Then what both bands quit. Drive is my favorite song. I also enjoyed all those vids back in those days. On the USS Carl Vinson CVN 70, we had TVs in the berthing. The ship had 24/7 something on the TVs mostly music videos. This was 1982 when I trans off to Scotland January 1985.
Oh man, the memories. It was great being an '80s kid. I used to listen to The Cars record back when vinyl was old and lame technology and cassette tapes were the new glory.
Hi Diane! Here are a couple of '80s bands to check out: Rockpile and Translator... Rockpile was the touring band for Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds in the late '70s and early '80s. The song I would pick is "Teacher, Teacher" or "If Sugar Was As Sweet As You." Translator was a relatively unknown band from the '80s from San Francisco, but they did a really cool song called "Everywhere That I'm Not".
I met Ric Ocasek and his very beautiful wife Paulina Porizkova, at a local bar in the East Village in Manhattan, their neighborhood. We were celebrating Joey Ramone's birthday. It was a great night in a little dive bar. Paulina was (is) absolutely gorgeous.
The Cars have so many songs that iconify the 1980's it's insane and it is some of the MOST 1980's sounds you will hear in any music. Amazing group. 100% complete nostalgia for me. BTW, Music with this level of talent in writing, singing, delivery, and painting a picture of the moment just doesn't really exist in any significant degree these days. There is a little of it but for those that know.... think about the depth of what The Cars brought to music. It's hard to match.
Paulina, originally from my country, was the first supermodel. I did a TV interview with her in the 90s and besides beautiful she was 1 very funny chick
although my response at the time (i was 18 or 19) was the same as Diane's -- that's the most beautiful woman i've ever seen -- she certainly wasn't the first supermodel. the term as now used goes back decades. even immediately before Paulina, there were supermodels such as Cheryl Tiegs.
I've never been a big fan of The Cars. Always had a problem with Ric Ocasek's voice. But I liked it when Benjamin Orr was the lead vocalist, in songs like Let's Go. Drive is my favorite Cars song by a wide margin; I've always loved it. By the way, the video was directed by the actor Timothy Hutton, who was all of 23 at the time.
Call me biased, because I grew up in the Boston area, but The Cars made one of the greatest debut albums with their self-titled The Cars. Every track is great and has a special meaning. Their follow-up, Candy-O, had WAY too much to live up to because of how good and popular their first album was. Candy-O stands well on its own and together The Cars first two albums are a master class in New Wave synth pop.
They were an amazing, brilliant, and innovative band. You want to see a crazy video, watch You Might Think or Magic. I don't think you should rely too heavily on whatever source you're getting your info from, but good on you for expanding your horizons. Still, Ric said that whenever they finished an album, he'd take the cassette to his car and listen to it there. That was the ultimate test for how it sounded, especially given their name. DO NOT sleep on this band any longer. They were among the GOAT's and remain sadly underappreciated imo, even tho they had numerous hits in the 70's and 80's.
I own all of the albums by The Cars, plus solo efforts by Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr. I also saw the band live a few times. They still rank as my favorite band from my youth. Ric wrote everything and shared lead singing duties with Benjamin Orr (who was the favorite of the ladies). No band sounded like them.
One of my favorite songs of all time. I'm 54 years old and was a teenager through most of the 80s. It doesnt remind me of anyone or any particular event in my life, it just puts me in a place of comfort and deep thought for some reason. I know that's not the vibe of the song but that's what it does to me.
I have seen this song performed live at Rockford Speedway near Chiago. Mott The Hoople and REO Speedwagon also performed that day. It was a mind-blowing experience that is unforgettable, So much talent.
Love them . Saw them in concert . The first 2 albums were my favs ( The Cars and Candy O ) . I loved Moving in Stereo because of how it moved around in headphones or quad speakers . Just saying . Great reaction as always !
Ric Ocasek most well known as the lead singer, but he often shared the duty with Benjamin Orr, who took the lead on this song. Orr also had a couple solo hits. One was “Stay the Night”, a personal favorite of mine.
Ric Ocasek was the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of the band, also the driving force and genius behind the band. However, he did not sing the lead in this song. He wrote the song in order to feature the bassist Benjamin Orr's voice. The model was his wife (Paulina Porizkova).
RIP Benjamin Orr. Great song, a little out of the norm for the Cars. Let's Go is my favorite of theirs. "She's so beautiful now, she doesn't wear her shoes."
They said that they named themselves "The Cars" because they mixed their music to sound good on car stereos. Back in the 70s and 80s, cars came with crappy radios and speakers. The 1st thing you did when you bought a car is upgraded the stereo and speakers. I had a few cars where the stereo was worth more than the car that it was installed in. And The Cars sounded great in them.
Makes me think of my Father...and i couldent have asked for a better one. Someone who was there through all of the up and downs, but there being a rock.
RIP Ben... Rick... Thank you for the music.
And Benjamin as well. They are both missed.

I still maintain that she was the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. She’s 59 and still drop dead gorgeous.
You can now watch Stacy's Mom music video. That band dressed up as the Cars and wanted Paulina Poriskova as the mom.
She didn't get much praise for her attempt at acting.

This was 1982 when I trans off to Scotland January 1985.
their songs vary in style so much...whatever you listen to next will sound totally different! that was fun! two of those dude take turns singing lead
Its nice discovering what you like...congratulations on coming out😊
80s music is awesome !!!!!!
Just a great song,by a great band! Lots of memories in this song for me.
Oh man, the memories. It was great being an '80s kid. I used to listen to The Cars record back when vinyl was old and lame technology and cassette tapes were the new glory.
Shake it up by the Cars is pretty good.
Great band great concerts, glad you covered them. 😊
I was in Boston, late 1984, walking on Huntington Ave, and Ric Ocasek drove by in a white convertible Mercedes.
I was somewhere else that very day.
The model is Paulina Porizkova. This song was in The Transformers movie (2007) and a couple times on Arrested Development
I was never much of a Cars fan but I have always loved this song!
Yes, you heard this band >>>>>>you just don't remember.😍
I remember when paulina porizkova was on the cover of Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. She was a super model.
They changed the music landscape with their first album only those that lived and listened pre Cars understand.
For more '80s New Wave style, check out Missing Persons - their top songs include "Destination Unknown" and "Words".
Happy Friday!! I really love this video.Have a great weekend.
Your next song, ballad is - Mister Mister - Broken Wings. Its a beautiful song.
That is a pretty one. Bet she knows it
I saw Elliot Easton in concert with Creedence Clearwater Revisited. It was a good concert.
Great band and song. Saw them once in the early 80s. Too bad Paulina abandoned Ric when he was sick and needed her the most.
Not only abandoned him but slandered him when he was in no position to respond.
Hi Diane. I saw the Cars in concert. They are New Wave, Power Pop & Pop Rock music.
She's definitely amazingly gorgeous.
Also the woman in "You Might Think".
One of my favorite bands from the '70s and '80s.
Ric Ocasek was the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of the band, also the driving force and genius behind the band. However, he did not sing the lead in this song. He wrote the song in order to feature the bassist Benjamin Orr's voice. The model was his wife (Paulina Porizkova).
Rest In Peace Benjamin Orr and Ric Ocasek your music and memories still linger throughout the years...
A-ha - Take On Me
Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me)
Guadalcanal Diary - Trail of Tears
Yazoo - Only You
Very popular Cars song. Very melodic and thoughtful lyrics. They might be gone but never forgotten. More classics by this band. Enjoy Diane.
Can’t believe this is now a golden oldie.
I was an 80s teen
I still rock to them at 66
First two albums were great…I love Candy-O! They were a great oasis in a desert of music that was the 80s…
Great song! Great band! Great video! Excellent reaction. Paulina Porizkova. Meaningful powerful song! Oh- case - ikkk
Ocasek is pretty easy to say. Pronounce it like he is an Irishman. O'Case-ick! The Cars was a staple when I was in high school. MTv was king!
Candy - O is my fav album from the Cars. The Cars was my 2nd fav
Moving in Stereo, Let the Good Times Roll....
Makes me think of my Father...and i couldent have asked for a better one. Someone who was there through all of the up and downs, but there being a rock.
This was one of my go to choices of karaoke songs when karaoke was so popular some years ago.
Welcome to 80’s music videos! The best!!!
