  • Another week of messy winter storms in Nova Scotia. Dominic is continuing to make logs for a building project. The snow is too much for the greenhouse. The tractor is still fun.

    We are Dominic and Jenny. We are learning to be more self sustainable with various levels of success on our 26 acre property in Nova Scotia we bought in 2020.

    Your a pair of winter-phobes and I wonder at your choice of location lol! The children are the true Canadians! I guess cold weather tolerance can skip a generation? ;o)
    We watch a couple in Alaska who have snow load issues too, of course. They have a steel pipe hoop greenhouse with a ridge beam but they still use the snowblower very proactively to remove the snow buildup next to the greenhouse after using a roof rake to clear any accumulation. They move all their snow with a side-by-side plow and a honda walk-behind with tracks. No tractor so far.
    Sorry to hear winter has you down Dominic. Keep being extra careful to only cut away from yourself with that hatchet, peeling logs that way is a bit risky.
    It is almost over guys! Thanks for sharing.

      Dominic has been throwing out some ideas on how to keep the snow off of it next year! You should hear us complain about the heat though🤣🤣 We lived in Santiago, Chile for a year and the insufferable summer heat might have been brought up from time to time 😅😅 I tolerate the heat better than Dominic and he tolerates the cold better than me. There is no winning except for a nice fall day.

      Kevin I think this is the first year that I have seriously hated winter. And it's not the temperature or weather that gets me, it's the lack of productivity at this point. I lived in Northern BC and that winter was a lot better as you got a few snowfalls per year and the snow stuck around.

    Time is money. Invest in a draw knife to remove the bark from your logs. I'd suggest a queen post approach to brace the sides of the hoop house. I've found that hog rings are much better for tying the cattle panels together. Good luck, snow is difficult to deal with.

    That type of greenhouse/chicken house works for your climate if you use the right materials. There are horse panels that are made of the same material but far smaller holes making it far more sturdy. Also, a thicker plastic is needed.
    Good video. Good job on the logs!!

      I think if I was more militant about brushing the top, and also had it somewhere I could clear the sides it would be dandy. I'm thinking up for solutions for next year and I actually think it's going to be salvageable for next winter. I intentionally didn't sink posts or anything thinking that I might roll it around on logs after the summer to a new location - Dom

    Month with no ‘ r ‘ is the best time to peel logs, from what I hear on YT.
    For the winter chicken high tunnel check out Edible Acres he is using a reclaimed Quebec style carport with additional wire support to add strength for snow load. They don’t get nearly as much snow, so I would do 3 runs of wire between the aluminium or galvanised steel framing. However if it comes from Quebec it should be designed to carry the snow load I’d think.

    I have been looking at alot of videos on the cattle panels some make it less wide say 8 to 9 foot wide gives it stronger top support but I will be supporting it in the middle cause here in Idaho we get like you alot of snow and the freezing rain doesn't hell with anything. Does your husband have a job that he works at. I love winter but now since spring is coming I am ready to start up gardening to try out some of these projects others are doing. God bless to your family.

      There was a lot of pressure from the sides. I think we need to keep the snow clear from the sides and it would stay up. That might be more trouble than it's worth but we'll see! My husband and I are both teachers.

    • @ODriscolls
      @ODriscolls  2 роки тому

      I was thinking steeper sides might help too, but I think most of the problems are really coming from the sides piling up too much to be honest. We will see what I can think up for next year.

    Back blade is a bad idea for snow removal. IMO: #1- inverted snowblower rear mount #2 front push box
    If financed an issue, chose push box
    You will regret a back blade and a back reverse blowerr Driving in reverse constantly gets old within 60 seconds!

  • @joanies6778
    @joanies6778 2 роки тому

    Don't scrap it! You just need to put a couple of cross supports from the middle top support bar then down the sides, preferably where the the panels meet since they would be the point of least resistance to the weight of snow. You just need additional support.
    Also, see if you can get some metal zip ties. Other people have successfully built theirs for heavy snow, just look around. Why waist the project when you can just add on or improve. What a great learning tool, though! Thanks for sharing either way. Best of luck!

    • @ODriscolls
      @ODriscolls  2 роки тому

      Since this time the problem is just that the snow built up on the sides. It's back to normal now. So I think at the end of this year I will move the greenhouse somewhere I can access with the tractor to keep the sides clear of snow and we will have the problem all sorted.

      Did you have to brush/rake off heavy loads of snow during the winter? Where did you get your panels? What is the length x width? Also. What gage is the plastic?

    • @ODriscolls
      @ODriscolls  2 роки тому

      I did before the ridge pole, but not anymore. The most important now is keeping snow from oiling up on the sides. That leads to worse problems now. Got the panels at the Coop. There is one in St. John's but not sure about around the bay. They are 16x4. Plastic is 6 mil. -Dom

    How does the hoop house hood up to the wind? I’m in St. John’s, Newfoundland and am considering a design like this since it’s relatively strong and economical. We won’t get as much snow as you guys but maybe more wind.
    Curious if you have any suggestions for strengthening the structure. I would really only be using it to force perennials 4-6 weeks early and maybe extending the season a month or so in the fall. Great work, on the channel, it’s cool to see some Atlantic Canadian content!

      Oh nice! I went to MUN and lived in St. John's for a long while. Dominic is from Bay Bulls. We've gotten winds over 100km/hr and it has held up very well in the wind. Keep snow clear from the top and sides and it is fine.

      If you do the following two things I don't think you'll ever have a problem:
      1) sweep the top after a storm.
      2) keep the sides clear.
      My quick and rough ridge beam has worked great for keeping the top up, but I think the main problem has been that I let the sides pile up. I think next year I'll be able to keep it in better shape having learned those lessons.

    Not having the proper tools makes you get creative. I’ve peeled logs with my axe many of times until I saw a draw knife at a yard sale for 2 bucks. I had to put about an hour of sharpening work on this but it works great now. Totally homemade tool. That tractor is badass. Bummer about the coop but I’m sure you will figure out how to fix it.
