    Why do people give “thumbs down “ to this lovely lady?
    Choose kindness. She’s a great teacher. Show some appreciation or don’t say anything. Don’t mess with my lady!

    You should be on tv! You are way more interesting and talented than the knickleheads i see on those cooking channels. You are relevant, recipes are easy to follow and not all the crazy ingredients. Thank you! I know this is a lot of work to produce your shows. 😎😎

    I am going to try those, I have to say I cant make biscuits. My Mom had a flour pan, she hollowed the center, added oil and milk and swirled it around and made the best biscuits ever, my husband married me thinking I could make my moms biscuits, boy was he surprised! LOL. She tried to teach me but they came out hard as rocks, she even tried to teach hubby, his were better then mine, but still hard. I know I over work the dough, but cant get the knack for knowing when to stop working it. Thanks for sharing.

    it took me 35 years to figure out i was using the wrong type of flour it was one of your older recipes that made me realize why my biscuits always looked like fat sugar cookies lol, thank you. i'm sure you'll save some newer cooks years of frustration with your explanations about self rising flour and waiting to put the liquid in until last and why you need to be fast after you do.

    Love your videos, Phyllis! Here’s an idea: Add about 3/4 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese to this recipe. When the biscuits come out of the oven, brush them with melted butter to which you have added garlic powder to taste. You won’t have to buy the Red Lobster mix anymore.❤️

      Ah Phyllis...I can remember churning home made butter, fresh, from milking the cows! I'd sit on my grandma's old kitchen table. I was sitting right on that old butter churn, wooden paddles. Churned that thing til the butter was thick and , oh so yellow! I can even remember that PUMP in the kitchen sink!!! Just to pump in water in her old farm house! And the old feather beds!!!!!! Omg...don't get me started! Out houses? Yeppers! The good old days!!!!!!

    • @sandraomar3007
      @sandraomar3007 6 років тому +2

      My grandmother didn't churn butter that I can remember, but she did have a pump and a cook stove in her kitchen and an outhouse out back by her garage. She had a big old sun bonnet, the kind you might see in an old western movie, that she tied under her chin, and she would wear it when she did her gardening.

    • @daythaheintzelman6634
      @daythaheintzelman6634 6 років тому +3

      Sandra Omar yes Sandra!! The old outhouse! I used it several times! Plus I did churn that butter! My grandma had cows and collected milk every morning, scraped the creme off the top and put it in the glass churn with wooden paddles in it. I sat on her big kitchen table and churned it!! She also had a big pump in her kitchen sink and pumped the water out of it. I also remember sleeping in those deep feather beds she made from those chicken feathers.....they were so comfy!! Wish I could go back about 60 years!💕

    Wow, every time I watch you doing anything regarding baking bread(s), I always think and remember how, back in the 60s through right up until they closed, it was a MUCH anticipated moment when my family and I would be driving up Rivers Avenue, aka 'The Dual Lane', which is Highway 52, and while driving along, heading toward 'Northwoods Mall', which was THE shopping mall for miles around, we would first SMELL the 'Claussen's Bakery', coming up on the left side of the highway, and the SAME THING would happen every time... Dad would intentionally slow the car, open his window about a third of the way down, sister on my left would do same, and then Dad, Mom, sis & I would DRINK IN that heavenly smell. MAN! That is a glorious thing to behold!!! And several years later, we were CRUSHED when we heard on the news that the store would be closing.
    Phyllis, thanks for the memories. I am sure, when I say that we all really love you and da hubby, that it must be 100% true.
    Now I must go and make me some biscuits. BYE!

    Great video, Phyllis! I bet those would make really good dumplings, too! Just drop them into a hot stew or pot of pinto beans - Delish! BTW, you can make all the buttermilk you want: Buy cultured buttermilk, and save out two tablespoons, and put into a quart mason jar. Heat 1 quart of whole milk to 72 degrees, and pour into the mason jar with the two tablespoons of buttermilk. Stir or shake to combine thoroughly. Put a lid on the jar, and sit on your counter for 12 to 24 hours. Voila! Buttermilk!

    • @PhyllisStokes
      @PhyllisStokes  6 років тому +4

      Good idea for making your own buttermilk. Sounds almost the same as making yogurt.

    • @carolavant3778
      @carolavant3778 6 років тому +6

      Very similar to making yogurt, but you don't heat the milk as high, and you don't need to keep it as warm while it cultures. I love home cheese making, too. Not really so hard - Just have to have some special equipment for hard cheeses. Saves a TON of money, once you get going, and the final product is awesome! Like canning, you know what's actually in what you're eating.

    • @carolavant3778
      @carolavant3778 6 років тому +3

      Barbara Brantley - Just be sure and buy "Cultured" buttermilk, otherwise, you can use about a 32nd tsp of mesophilic cheese culture as a starter in the whole milk and go from there.

    • @kikihammond5326
      @kikihammond5326 6 років тому +2

      I tried making cheese once and it was a miserable failure, I think because I couldn't get raw milk, I had to use ultra pasteurized as its all that was available. Curious where you get your milk. I was hoping for homemade mozzarella and it turned out more like ricotta. I used it in a baked ziti and it was OK, but very frustrating.

    • @carolavant3778
      @carolavant3778 6 років тому +2

      Hi, Kiki Hammond! As you found out the hard way, you can't use "ultra-pasturized" milk - it will not form curds. However, you can use pasturized milk. I add 1/2 tsp of calcium chloride to each gallon, and it works fine. Also, no chlorinated water, either. It destroys the rennet. Use bottled water, good well water, or filtered water, if it removes the chlorine. As for raw milk, unless you have your own cow or goat, it's expensive. I get milk at the Save-A-Lot for $2.59/gal. Local raw milk is great, and I can buy it at the farm supply store, but it's $10.00/gal!!!! Yikes!

    Ms. Phyllis, your drop biscuits look so scrumptious! When my 5 children were home, I would fix these often, though I'm sure not as good as yours. My daughter once had to do a demonstration speech in high school, so she chose to demonstrate drop biscuits. We measured out ingredients except for milk, which she planned to buy in the school cafeteria. We even cleaned up the toaster oven and she packed it off to school, too. She was doing well until, in her nervousness, she poured in the whole carton of milk. Then, since she'd only brought a limited amount of flour and butter, couldn't correct the ratio.... She continued with the demonstration, but her biscuits turned out very thin and run together. Thankfully the teacher was sympathetic and she received a good grade because of her clear instructions and composure. Lol... I think of that every time I make them now. God bless all young women and their first efforts with biscuits! Love you!

    I just explained to one of your other subscribers about what a biscuit is in the U.S. A biscuit is a cookie in Ireland. Just like a crisp is a potato chip, and a chip is a french fry. If it wasn't so late, I would go down to the kitchen!! My glands are swelling, as I can feel and taste those, with the luscious flavour of butter...stop...I am pushing maximum density, and going to end up a two ton Tessie!!!!💕☘

    I've made these little biscuits many times since watching Ms. Phyllis make them here. Its really a great little recipe that is so quick and simple and they're so good you definitely don't want to eat just one. One little trick that I do to prevent mine from looking so ragged on top is to dip a spoon in melted butter and then smooth the back of the spoon over the top of each biscuit. It smooths out the peaks on the top and decreases the ragged appearance. The biscuits also get a nice crisp buttery top. Just thought I would share this in case anyone might be interested. Enjoy!

    Gotta luv biscuits!! Good to know about using sour cream & milk as a substitute for buttermilk. Thanks for that tip. It didn't take long to mix up a batch of these drop biscuits and pop 'em in the oven and are being served with our lunch this afternoon. You made it look so easy! Thanks for the recipe and the video, Ms. Phyllis!

    Oh my, so delicious! I always went to my Grandmas house in Iowa, growing up, and she called these, Baking Powder Biscuits. I think it’s basically the same recipe. Then she passed, and I always tried to make homemade biscuits and bread, etc..Cook like she did. Now I’m super lazy about it, and I use Bisquick for drop biscuits..lol Honestly, I’m going to make your recipe, Phyllis, because they’re just so worth the effort. :) We always have sausage gravy over ours on weekends. Everyone just calls it biscuits and gravy up here. Thanks for bringing me back, Miss Phyllis! You’re just the best, and I really think a lot of you..:) Take Care!!🌷🤗🦋

    Everything that you said was pretty much the same as my Grandma, except she used fresh Pork Yard that we rendered, in 55 gallon drums. She was half Cherokee and half Scott/Irish. SHE WAS THE BEST AND THE ONLY GOOD PERSON IN MY CHILDHOOD.
