  • When you need something sweet this will work for you. Leave off the icing and this makes an excellent base for strawberry or blueberry short cake, just add whipped creamed and you've got a great homemade desert.
    Here's the recipe:
1 stick of butter, softened (1/2 cup)
    1 cup sugar
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    2 large eggs
    1 1/4 cups sifted self-rising flour
    1/2 cup buttermilk
Bake in 9x13 inch Pyrex pan in preheated 350 degree oven for 25-30 minutes
    Icing:
    4 tablespoons butter, clarified
    1/4 cup buttermilk
    1 3/4 - 2 cups confectionary sugar
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    Thanks for watching.

I made this cake after supper tonight, and I as well made the lemon glaze and it was amazing! You are so right Phyllis.... this was a very easy and fast cake to make, but very delicious. I collect old cookbooks from the 1930's through the 1970's. My oldest is from 1932 by Ida Bailey Allen called Cooking Menus Service. These are the pioneers of cooking. The recipes today have at least 20 ingredients to buy, items I've never heard of and the majority of the ingredients are not in your pantry. That is why I love the old fashioned recipes that you are keeping alive for us today. Thank you Phyllis! I love watching your channel and I even subscribed to Mr. Bucky's channel. God bless :)

Thank you for letting all of us continue to watch and learn from Miss Phyllis. I lost my mother when I was very young and was raised by my father until I was 16. I never had anyone to teach me how to cook I always just watched other people and I picked up some pointers but when I found Miss Phyllis on youtube I am now making all kinds of homemade meals and I am not ashamed to say that as of today I am 60 and every week I watch her videos like I am doing today for a recipe. Today I am making a pot roast and a homemade cake.
