This was like listening to a grown up Winnie the Pooh teach me how to bake crumpets and I couldn't have enjoyed it more. I'll be eating my first one with honey once I bake them.
Oh bother!! I didn't think anyone would notice 😅 🤣 😉 Thanks for watching Alyssa my friend, much appreciated.

I'm glad I'm not alone in hearing that. such cheery memories!
YES! Thinking the same thing; so glad I didn't need to scroll forever to find like minds.
Not unless you butter and pour honey on them.
Any cooking video that gives the recipe right up front instead of stringing people along for views, deserves a thumbs up right away. It's one of those things that shows someone cares a little bit extra. I will be trying this very soon. I just got to the end and saw them toasted with butter and jam... Maybe sooner than I planned. They look delicious.
Very kind thanks 😊

This made me unexpectedly really sad! My grandma always said she won’t buy crumpets from the shops because they don’t taste right but nobody she knew had a recipe for them (a problem we literally cannot experience these days…). But she’d said on many occasions she still remembered what “real crumpets” tasted like from the bakery and wished she was smart enough to make and share them with us so we knew… she passed away years ago now but I stupidly got the idea, “I wonder if these crumpets are what grandma still remembers, I should make them for her.”, for a split second before remembering she’s gone. Sorry grandma would have loved to share some with you but I’ll still have to try it now :(
I do that too with my father (the forgetting). It just shows that you care ❤
you could make them & enjoy the good memories you have.. I am going to try the recipe too

LOL my hubby walked in and asked “is that winnie the Pooh?” 😂
Might I also point out that Pooh is now in the public domain, and I would endlessly watch episodes of basic British meals as read by WTP...
Lmao! I sent this to my partner and told her I found Pooh’s cooking channel. I love it
Oh bother!
I was born and have lived my whole life in the US. I've never been to the UK or had a proper crumpet in my life: I grew up eating "English muffins" and they have long been my favorite breakfast bread. Until today when I made these for the first (of many) time.
I couldn't resist eating two almost immediately while I cooked the others!
Fantastic! I'm pleased you gave them a try my friend and they turned out well.
I’m not sure when or why American ‘English muffins’ got that name because, as you found out apparently, they’re def not the same as crumpets!

Made them today, followed your instructions to the letter and they came out perfect. Im a foreign lady settling in the North of England and I'm very proud to offer these to my Yorkshire husband. He loved them!!
Great job! my friend, please say hi to your husband from me.
My late wife was a "foreign lady", we lived in the North of England.... and she made the best Yorkshire Puddings I have ever tasted....even my dear mother had to concede defeat!
Enjoy Yorkshire!
@JohnKirkwoodProFoodHomemade hi I have a question? After the flour do I add salt or sugar? The screen say sugar but you say salt
@@Akichan07 sugar is only needed to activate the yeast. When John adds the flour, he definitely means salt. Just a little mistake in the 'subtitles '.

You are amazing, John! I was a flight attendant for 38 years and often flew to England. One things I’ve always missed since retirement 5 years ago was British crumpets. My husband loves UA-cam and saw yours last night, asking me if I’d ever had crumpets. I said, “Yes and they’re wonderful”! I just tried your recipe and they are perfect! I made mine with Better Batter 1:1 gluten free flour since I’m intolerant. I added 3 extra Tbsp of water to my batter and proofed in the oven with the light on. They’re even better than I’d hoped!!! I can’t wait to make them next month with my 88 yr old mother who loves crumpets, too. I also love your warm cuddly Pooh voice. Who wouldn’t?
Thank you for your kind words my friend.
thank yhou for this!! I'm gluten free and I was just thinking, while watching, if it would work GF since I have trouble with yeast and stuff. Glad it worked for you!!
Im gluten free but the shop bought ones are expensive and have a nasty vinegar taste to them. Going to give these a try and will try your tip 😊
You mean English crumpets from England; or were your British crumpets from Wales or Scotland? Scotch whisky is from Britain and is British whisky, but it's made in Northern Britain, which is Scotland, so we call it Scotch whisky (note the spelling).
I'm an Englishwoman from England, whereas a British woman who could also be Welshwoman or a Scotswoman.
There are three countries in Britain, and four in the United Kingdom. England is not a sovereign country: it doesn't have its own government, nor its own King, but the UK does. The word united gives a clue to there being more than one country in the kingdom.
Anything from England is precisely English, including me and my language. Simple.
I use to eat them with honey. Awesome.
About never buying another Crumpet again - you have THAT right! Only I have never tasted Crumpets before I started making them at home from your recipe and I can guarantee you I won't be buying them now. Mine come out PERFECT every time. I bought one of those infrared temp gauges and never knew there was such a thing, now I won't cook without it. I make my Crumpets on a 12" Lodge cast iron pan I already had, but I did need to buy a set of Crumpet rings...I kid you NOT ~ I must have made 8-dozen since I started as I can't resist giving them away to my friend and her husband, and my son adores them with coffee in the morning, and of course I only get a few to myself, but I enjoy each bite I do get. Thank you. Had I not made your acquaintance in this way I would never have learned of Crumpet Joy !!!!!!

I saw this as a recommended video and I used to be a chef at restaurants and cafes in New Zealand back in the 90's and 2000's. I completely lost the love to cook, let alone bake for a few reasons but mainly 1 Head Chef that just took the fun away.
However, seeing the sheer kindness and excellent recipe you made, well, it made me want to subscribe and try to get back into cooking something (I never imagined I could think that way again).
I had flashbacks long forgotten of growing up in the early 80's cooking Pikelets and Pancakes with my Mum on a Saturday morning that had a similar recipe to this one in many ways was a nice surprise and good motivator, she would be happy. I buy crumpets too, but NOT any more thanks to you John!!!
John, if you see this, I saw that you have attempted or have given a heart and a reply to more than 500 comments (I got tired looking further), that alone is something so beautiful in nature I was humbled. Be very proud of yourself for being so selfless and thank you for being an example of what I think is just pure kindness to all. :)
Dear Stanley, it's comments like yours that keep me going with these video recipes, and to receive such positivity from a fellow chef... is high praise indeed.

We just call them English Muffins here in the US, but these look much better than store-bought.
Same here! I clicked on the link to learn what a crumpets is and now I'm going to make them.
@@threadmiser4914 English muffins are quite different than crumpets, though in a good US grocery store you find them near each other. English muffins are more like biscuits; made from a dough that's rolled out, cut, then baked.
@@threadmiser4914 They are definitely not like English muffins. If you have a Trader Joe's near you, they have both English muffins and crumpets side by side and you will readily see the difference.
As a Pole who moved to the UK just before teenagehood, I got to be influenced by both, Home and the UK fairly equally. Now in my mid 20s, I combine the two often. Crumpets with Polish pate, Yorkshire puddings filled with buckwheat and gravy and so on. Don't knock it until you try it!
Sounds good. Dzięki!
Do you make your own pate?
@@Sushilover01 I do from time to time, but (mainly due to nostalgia I imagine) I usually buy the ready/tinned stuff. The two main Polish brands are Profi and Podlaski, both about same quality wise. They’re nothing special, and admittedly, they do look like wet cat food in the tin, however the flavour is very pleasant and there’s many types to choose from with anything from garlic to sun dried tomatoes as a “topping”. They’re also handy to have in your pantry as they’re very shelf stable and cheap so I usually just buy a dozen whenever I visit the Polish shop.

During my childhood, I spent some scarce holidays in the north-eastern part of the UK, and I often heard the word "crumpet" being used in a pretty different context and meaning. I never understood that the name actually applied to this mouth-watering delicacy. I now also understand why they used the same name for the other "activity", more over I now understand why my mother doubled with laughter. One is never too old to learn. For certain I will make these for my grandchildren. When they are old enough, and I live long enough, I might explain the other meaning. Some things should never get lost.
I fell in love with crumpets while visiting Scotland for 2 weeks! I got home 3 days ago and am already craving them. Since I can’t find a place to buy them in the US, I’m excited to make them. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Trader Joes often has crumpets btw. I find they don't quite taste like typical British one's but close enough in a pinch.
Safeway
I never realised that crumpets were so easy to make. They look nice - so much better than the shop bought ones. Thank you for sharing your recipe John. 😊

We love crumpets. My husband and I lived in Scotland for over 6 years and they were so easy to get. Nine months ago we moved back to the US. I have watched other videos on how to make them, but this is the best explanation I have ever heard. I’m going to try to make some.
That's so kind Gerrie.
Gerrie Bell, Are you Americans & moved to Scotland for work? My Mother & Father came to the USA in 1929.
@@chris3m98 yes. My husband’s employer sent him there for some projects. We were both born in the US.

So are crumpets like American biscuits? I’m trying to figure out what they taste like.
I love English muffins and plan to make some from scratch when I’m feeling better. Then I ran into this recipe, now I have to make these too. They look like they’re gonna taste delicious.

Now I know what a crumpet is! I had no idea beyond “food English people seem to like.” Now I’ll have to make some!

Are they biscuits ?
I'm from the US and have heard about 'crumpets' for years but never tasted one or even really knew what they were. Ithink is time I remedied this and give this recipe a try because they look absolutely lovely! Almost made my mouth water watching the video!🤤
Thx for sharing the recipe. 💜
Thanks for watching Laurie much appreciated my friend.
Ditto, looks like a biscuit and a pancake had a baby
Please update us when you have tried them! I like them with butter and marmite or with melted cheddar on top. Great with just salted butter too.
Loved crumpets since I was a child. All my life whenever I have crumpets, I have two. One with butter and jam, and one just covered in butter. (not margarine, proper butter). Absolutely love them!
Hope you make some 'cos they're really good🤗
I grew up with “crumpet pizza” for weekend lunch. Layer on your toasted crumpet: sautéed onion rings, sliced tomato, tin sardines in tomato sauce, top with strong cheddar. Heat in oven approx 25 min. Make them for my family and we love them on a rainy day 😊
wow that sounds fabulous. i m happy to stick to just butter plus the occasional dollop of a decent jam or marmite (sparingly)
We do English muffin pizza here in the U.S. but it's a lot less exotic than what you described--just pizza sauce and mozzarella.
Oh, those sound delicious! I love sardines but never thought to use them on pizza.
I feel like I, for the first time, truly understand the appeal of English folklore.
This whole video made me feel like I was right at home

the comments on this video are so sweet. food is one of the few aspects of life that can bring humanity together.
I lived in UK for 12 years, but 7 years ago I moved to a different country. Crumpets was one of the food that I miss the most. And here it is! A fairly simple crumpet recipe I can actually make!
Thank you! ♥️
Thanks for sharing Agata hope you enjoy them 😋.
Wow John. another winner! Made these last night: Made the first two too thick and burned them, made the next two thinner and less scorched and finally nailed the correct temperature (I really have to get one of those thermometers) and the last four were perfect. So this morning I popped them in the toaster and served them up with a fried egg and smoked salmon on top! Not had a proper crumpet since I was in the UK 10 years ago. This recipe is right up there with your fabulous suet pudding steak and kidney which is the best I have ever tasted. Thank you!
Thanks Trish, pleased you're enjoying the channel, much appreciated.
A dear friend sent me this recipe after I revealed that I'd never tried crumpets, insisting it was the only proper way to have them. I tried it this evening for the very first time, with butter and jam, and it's unlike any bread or pastry I've ever tasted. The textures are fascinating and so comforting, especially paired with a hot tea. This batch is already gone, but I will definitely be making more soon to stock my freezer. Thank you!!
Fantastic! I'm pleased you gave them a try my friend and they turned out well.
Wow. John just wow. What a great video. I live in the north east. too single dad to my little girl and she loves crumpets. Thank you so much for such an easy recipe video to follow.
I love cooking but never thought about making my own crumpets.
Looking forward to watching the rest of your videos.
Fantastic! I'm pleased you gave them a try my friend and they turned out well.
I tried making crumpets years ago and failed miserably but this time I followed your video/recipe and I’m amazed how well they turned out. Unfortunately they didn’t last long enough to take a picture. Thank you
Great job! Dale, they freeze well so next time you can make a bigger batch.
"they didn’t last long enough to take a picture" sounds like the turned out perfect 👍
Haha didn't last long enough.
John…. I love the no nonsense straight up traditional advice and instruction. I’m autistic and super critical so please be assured this is a very big compliment from me. I am an Englishman living homeless in Australia and I am always on the look out for good simple and easy useful recipes with flour. I’m not usually a lover of crumpets but with no milk to make poor man’s pancakes this feels like it could be a good substitute. Thanks John. Brilliant work.
Go for it my friend and I hope you get settled soon.
This is so wholesome, made me smile! The second I saw the star shaped one, I knew immediately what my next baking challenge would be! Can't wait to give these a try. Thank you for sharing!

You inspired me to go straight into the kitchen; AND your recipe and perfectly straightforward instructions gave me such a treat ... home made crumpets that actually TASTE like the crumpets my mum made a lifetime ago that I grew up loving with butter and honey. From Australia I thank you John, a great job.
Fantastic! I'm pleased you gave them a try my friend and they turned out well.
They look so good, if it wasn't so late in the evening I'd be in the kitchen having a go now. Thank you for sharing.
One day later and I've made some and won't be buying them anymore!
Two weeks since I first watched this and I can't stop making them! I normally triple everything and use 4 inch crumpet rings. So far I haven't frozen any as they keep well in an airtight box. I take 2 to work for lunch every day 😁
One of my favourite treats. They're getting to be too expensive, and I'm an experienced cook and baker, so I'll give your recipe and instructions a go. Thanks for a calm, clearly spoken and visually precise video.

Works like a charm! John is right, we shall never buy a crumpet in the store again, especially here where they are not native and cost a pretty penny for a sorry taste and sad texture. This is an easy recipe to follow, one the kids can help with, and definitely part of our morning repertoire. Thanks a bunch for sharing your experience John, all the best!
Thank you, thank you, thank you 😭 I live in Rwanda and I miss crumpets so much. When I get back to the UK to visit, I stuff myself with buttered crumpets and blue cheese. You can't buy them here and I had no idea they were that easy to make - I'm going to give this a go!
Hope you enjoy them my friend.
I MISS eating Crumpets!! It's been 20+ years. Thank you for posting this video, John!!! 🥰
My pleasure. Thank you for watching my friend ❤️ much appreciated.
There used to be a crumpet shop in the Pike Place Market. I worked at the Mint restaurant next to it. I would grab a crumpet from there and a Turkish coffee from a place upstairs. Made a wonderful breakfast! An American English muffin is nowhere near as good as the crumpet! And i love english muffins.

Thanks Paul.
John, not fair! I’m nice and warm in bed, about to go to sleep and I came across your video. Now I feel the sudden urge to get out of bed and make these delicious looking crumpets… Thanks very much!
I've been there. I got that t shirt. Many times, I've been lying in bed, and all of a sudden, a recipe will pop into my nut, and up and away I'll go 😅🤣😅. Good night, my friend 😴😉❤️
I live in Kansas in the USA and I haven’t been able to find crumpets for so long. But I will make my own now, I like to have mine smeared with butter and drizzled with honey. Really I can’t get any better than that. Thank you so much.
