I just purchased a use 2018 F-150 5.0 and need to change the oil. Overall, your video was very helpful. A couple of comments. I've been changing my own oil for over 60 years (still do). A couple of things that I do with each oil change are 1.) After removing the old oil filter, make certain that the old oil filter gasket is not still on the engine block, and 2.) I prefill the new oil filter about half full with new oil. I understand that the filter is horizontal, but with it only half full, you can put it back on with no spillage. Other than those two comments, I appreciated your video. I also just purchased a "permanent" oil plug (Ronin) for it that helps you to better control the flow of the old oil when you drain it. Will try it with in the next couple of weeks. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic 5W20 oil. I've been a Ford guy my entire life. Love your stable of vehicles.
Hey Tom, great purchase on the 18 F150. You'll love it. Those are some good additional tips. I've definitely seen my filter gaskets come off on other vehicles but not the F150, so it is a great idea to check. I'll have to check out that Ronin oil plug/drain. I think I've looked at it in the past. Seems like it would make it easier and less of a mess. Glad to hear you are another Ford guy!!! Thanks for stopping by.

I've used the Fumoto in all my vehicles for years. They are well engineered and do an excellent job. I have a 2-1/2 gallon can (looks just like the old metal gas cans) with a clear hose attached to it, and the other end attaches directly to the Fumoto plug. Works great!
I usually have someone else change the oil on my F-150 mainly because I hate to deal with the old oil. Overall it is nice to see things are pretty easy though. Not quite as easy as it is on my old 67 Mustang with the inline 6. You can almost do the whole job from the top and never have to get under the car. The drain plug is the only thing you cannot easily reach from the top. I also see you do not prefill your filter. I typically do not do that either unless the vehicle has been sitting awhile.
I used to have the dealer do it when I was working from an office, exactly for the same reason you do. I typically bring my old oil back to Advanced Auto or someplace similar around here. That's nice you can get almost the entire 67 done with above the car. I refill the 1969 Filter when I replace it because it's vertical. The F150 has a horizontal filter. I can only imagine the mess it would make....

5-30 or 10-30 is better. That's what I am putting in for sunny California. Does your truck burn a lot of oil or loses or wtf just checked my f150 2018 n showed no oil so currently about to do a oil change I search up on google n all I get is that this year is reported of rapid oil drainage
Eh hate going to the dealership got charged twice cuz first time they said they fixed it n when I pick it up still had the issue took it back got charged again total was like 600 together or more but man I been trying bunch of oil brands to see which one last longer but it all drains like today had no oil mark on dip stick I normally check it at least once a month but this time I took about 2 months to check n had no mark but when I dump it out did pull out quite a bit so luckily seem to have enough oil even though it should nothing but oh well
The plastic plug is one of the weak points in that system. Who in their right mind would design a plastic plug? FYI, I've had my oil changed at least five times at the dealership (they were free when I bought my 2020 F150 5.0). When I look over the service sheet I see they replace the plastic plug each time. I asked about this and was told the plugs are designed to be replaced, not reused. Since I started doing my own oil changes, I purchased and installed an aluminum plug. The entire plug isn't removed when I drain the oil, only an interior cylinder that unscrews. Drain the oil then screw the cylinder back in. I checked with a friend who is a DM for one of those big companies that offer the quick oil changes. He confirmed they replace plastic oil pan drain plugs each time.
That's interesting. I've never heard of anyone doing that. I ordered a new drain plug to check out. I do like the newer design that has the socket for a ratchet to stick in.
@@SmackeysGarage Totally agree. I did call my son to verify and he confirmed, the company he works for replaces all plastic drain plugs. He added some times they use a red plug, which is an after market version. I'm installing my new drain plug next week (the aluminum one) but I will inspect the old and see if there is any difference between it and another plastic one I purchased from Ford to have on hand. Just watched your shock video and ordered Bilstein 5100 to replace my rear shocks.
I've heard good things about the aluminum plug (Ronan I think). You'll really like the 5100s. I was surprised at home much of a difference they made for my truck. Keeps the rear much more planted than the stocks.
@@SmackeysGarage Been using it for 7 years but I only have 30,000 miles on my truck..I'm retired and don't drive much I change my oil about every 2500 miles or 12-18 months,I pay $18 for a 5 quart jug and the oil meets or exceeds all specs...if you think about it..all the different oils come out of the same boat.
I'm changing my oil for the first time on my 2017 5.0. How do you know when you put enough oil back into the engine? do you fill it to the top where you put the oil in or just periodically check the dip stick?
So I refill almost all the oil and then I let it sit for a few minutes and then check the dipstick. I then add until it is topped off. I also check it every thousand miles or so.
Made a huge mess first time i changed my oil, stupid placement of the drain plug, stupid yellos plastic drain plug, i ditched it and got a upr plug , now i just attach a 1/2 inch hose and open the valve 😅😅 no leaks no mess

I haven't run it in my truck but I've run it in my classic cars. Good brand overall.
I run Amsoil 5W30 Signature Series in my 2019 5.0. It's all I've ever used.
Gale Banks power recommended Amsoil best!
Does your truck burn a lot of oil or loses or wtf just checked my f150 2018 n showed no oil so currently about to do a oil change I search up on google n all I get is that this year is reported of rapid oil drainage
Yea it burns a good amount of oil. There is a TSB where the dealer can adjust the software/vacuum but it is a known issue.
Eh hate going to the dealership got charged twice cuz first time they said they fixed it n when I pick it up still had the issue took it back got charged again total was like 600 together or more but man I been trying bunch of oil brands to see which one last longer but it all drains like today had no oil mark on dip stick I normally check it at least once a month but this time I took about 2 months to check n had no mark but when I dump it out did pull out quite a bit so luckily seem to have enough oil even though it should nothing but oh well
I’m running mobile 1 5w-20 full synthetic but mine holds 7.7. Not 8.8. 🤔
You must have a 2017 or older? I believe in 2018 they changed to 8.8.
@@SmackeysGarage 2016 5.0
Interesting but you didn't show how you gained access to the filter.
On my truck there is nothing below to cover the filter.
Is it normal to hear taping noise from lifters??
Which engine do you have? The 5.0 is notorious for making noises.
Especially if your using semi synthetic 0w-20. Minimum 5W-30 is needed. 0w20 is for fuel mileage gain of 001%
May just be the high pressure fuel pump. They all tick. Run a top tier premium fuel 91 octane or higher as recommended, and it will run quieter.
I use Amsoil on my F150
Me too. Gale Banks said its Best so I do it.
Mechanic charging around $150 for this now.
I’m wondering if that’s normal for an F-150
That sounds about right for an oil change where I am.
I use Walmart Supertech full synthetic in my 2016 5.0.
Always wondered about that. How long and how many miles have you been using it for?
@@SmackeysGarage ok thank you, I didn’t know if I could mess something up if I put to much
How many gallons does a 5.0 f150 2019 engine take?
Check the manual. Should take around 8.8 quarts with the filter.
Made a huge mess first time i changed my oil, stupid placement of the drain plug, stupid yellos plastic drain plug, i ditched it and got a upr plug , now i just attach a 1/2 inch hose and open the valve 😅😅 no leaks no mess
I'll have to look into that one
any trouble with engine codes ? P0011
I've never had that code on this truck. How many miles on it? Camshaft timing over advanced...

2020 xlt 5.0 quaker state 5w 30 engine happier with 5 w 30
I’ve found the same. Thanks for chiming in!

Royal purple 5w20
Great choice! I love Royal Purple oils
RP is Garbage. Check out project farms video on it
You have to add some oli into the new filter like 100mg befor installation
You can, it is just a pain on these vehicles with the filter being installed horizontal. I typically do not do it that way and have not had an issue.
No you don't.
No you don’t. It’s logical for diesels but not gassers. I was a lube tech at Toyota and we never prefilled filters, unless it was a diesel.
@Smackey's Garage your right i did not see the filter position
Ford has a feature for that. Hold gas pedal to the floor, crack it over for a little. It fills the oil filter
What the heck with plastic drain plug!
So far so good though!
I see when pouring oil out of big jug it gurgles... turn the jug 180 degrees around and a real precise pour will be produced.
Everyone does it backwards...
Good show too!
Thanks. I’ll try it the other way next time! With the location of the handle it isn’t that intuitive.
It’s 7.7 quarts
Also - mine has this stupid plastic cover making oil filter access a pita.
I probably would have ripped that off. My 2018 never had one from the factory
How many miles you think these engines will last.
The 5.0 has been around in some iteration for quite some time. I’m expecting 200+ out of it but I most likely won’t have the vehicle that long. I bought it new and I’m at just under 60k.
@@SmackeysGarage I’m at 130k on my ‘15. Went through a water pump and starter since I bought at 90k. I drive it hard after it’s warmed up. Got an exhaust. I’m also expecting 200k, but hoping for 300k. I have seen videos of Gen 1 Coyotes at 400k miles in a few videos. Luckily we have Gen 2 so we don’t have Gen 3s oil consumption issues or more complicated repair process from cylinder sleeve material change. If you haven’t already you can have some fun tinkering with Forscan too. Good luck to you and yours.
Yea. I agree with you on all those points. I could see 300-400 out of them and then keep going. I’ve started playing with Forscan some. I used it to add the trailer brake controller to my truck. I’ve also used it for odds and end service features. Like putting Fords in emergency brake service mode. Thanks for stopping by Vladmir VK!
@@SmackeysGarage Yeah you can reset the Transmission control module, and idling procedures etc. my favorite is editing the splash load up screens when starting the truck.
I just sold my 2013 5.0 that took 7.5 quarts of oil with 214K. Not a tick, knock or whine. 5k oil changes. I added 7oz of Sea Foam to the crankcase 300-400 miles before each oil change and a can in the gas tank once per month. Best engine I've ever had. I only sold it to upgrade to supercrew.
Valvoline 100% synthetic

Hey I was wondering if I can use a K&N HP-2011 oil filter for my 2017 f150 v8 5L..what u guys think?
I'd go to Autozone or advanced auto and enter in the part number and see if it will fit. It shows it fits my truck.
