  • This video is the outcome of extensive research demystifying RED's sensor tech, especially the RED MYSTERIUM sensor- purely based on facts. The information every camera manufacturer, every RED user, and every cinematographer MUST HAVE.
RED claims they made their own sensor, and that their compression method REDCODE CODEC is not a prior art, among several other false claims.
You'll witness never-seen-before clips, and will be surprised by the level of unearthed information.
    - Can you support me? I need to be able to pick up some old RED gear. I am particularly interested to inspect RED Epic-M or Epic-X. Please see here for more information.
    www.gofundme.com/f/jinni-reve...
    - Do you need help with this information? Or have you got some information you'd like to share with me? Or maybe you have fallen victim to Red’s false representation and/or their failure to disclose correct information?
Let’s talk! Email your details to redvictim@jinnitech.com

Here's a background story for you. My ex-roommate owns one of those original Epic M bodies. When we were supposed to take delivery of the camera, we were told "oh, sorry, we sold your camera to Peter Jackson." The next time we were supposed to take delivery, we were told "oh, Spike Lee walked in today and bought your camera body." We ended up taking delivery of the camera body far, far later because a bunch of hollywood-types managed to cut in line, and RED jumped at the chance to allow them to name-drop themselves using their brand. So, technically, the camera my ex-roommate paid for was one of the 48 used to shoot the hobbit. Alternatively, one of the few used to shoot The Newest Hottest Spike Lee Joint. Jannard only managed to "change the world" so quickly because of californian money and handshake deals. Nobody should trust that guy, he's a used car salesman slimeball in every sense of the word.
Edit: Proof of ownership from 2011: ua-cam.com/video/r9TdnTaDBBs/v-deo.html
Including my ex-roommate talking about how the redmote was on backorder and the way red jerks people around. They never did offer us the infrared filter modification, one of their reps just lied to him over the phone, pretty much. At the time that video was shot, we couldn't even get footage off the red mags, because the USB reader was on backorder too.
One of the other things I want to point out is, my ex-roommate remarks in the video "So this box has 27 computers in it, huh?" and my response is "I thought that was a 27 layer ASIC." At the time, RED may have had the sensor available, but actually getting a small enough computer fast enough back then was rough. To my understanding, the Red One used a very expensive ~$3000 Xilinx FPGA to interface with the first "mysterium" sensor, and the Epic-M had taken the verilog/VHDL design from the FPGA to a real hard-logic ASIC die and package, dropping the price per die to somewhere in the $400 range. That was the major jump that RED took -- there was no off the shelf System on Chip design at the time that could handle polling the large sensor that quickly (most SoCs around that time were not even reaching a gigahertz yet) and saving the data at the same time. As an engineer myself that's dabbled in understanding silicon die production, I'm pretty sure I know exactly how RED pulled it off: Their fancy ASIC was very busy DMAing between the parallel sensor bus and the SATA controller driving the REDMAG. During those early firmwares, if you disrupted the camera's power supply while it was writing (or the battery got too low), you could get the camera's ASIC stuck DMAing the same corrupted 4 lines over and over into a .r3d file. Today, someone could just buy a xilinx virtex-7 or something and put together a similar logic design and DMA controller in about three months.

I started to realize RED (and similar) wasn’t for me when I met a RED team packing up after making a commercial. They were too afraid of damage to their equipment because expensive and no replacements locally. Cheaper and nimbler things seems to make a lot more sense. But regardless, even before these revelations I don’t understand REDs price points. To any new comers, e.g. BMD or Panasonic seem to make more sense. But perhaps second hand market prices on RED will go down as their fairytale breaks apart publicly, enabling those interested to grab a historic camera cheap.

Basically from what I got, RED took the credit from the real geniuses behind the technology that made them the mega brand they are today and pretended that it was all done by their internal team. Like a group project in school where one kid does all the work and everyone else stands in front of the class to do the presentation and gets the a even though they didn't really do much behind the scenes.

@@edingacic546 I do not think that's what is happening here. Still, reading the legal papers of the litigation is insightful and this Jinnitech guy is indeed doing his research. Reading them you get why they/RED needed peter Jackson "use/approve" Boris and Natasha cameras since Redcode was not finalised. The whole patent line of defence seems based on that. If litigation recognize the cameras were not what the patent and Mr Jannard say at some given point in time, then Apple has a point. They have requested to see/examine the cameras... and it seems one of them has disappeared ...

It's generally a standard in the imaging industry to list out the sensor used, part number, and manufacturer. This however doesn't seem to apply to consumer stuff such as cameras. Sony and Canon obviously use their own sensors most of the time, Fujifilm mentions the type of sensor they use (X-trans or Sony), whereas Nikon uses sensors made by Sony, Panosonic, Toshiba, Samsung, Towerjazz... being rather promiscuous. Although most aren't explicitly listed, it's pretty simple to figure out the sensor when teardown photos are shown. It is indeed very odd for "Red" to claim they made their own sensor while clearly they don't have the capacity to do so. Ordering sensors made to one's spec isn't making it, Nikon does exactly that with Sony and other sensor provides but they never pass the sensor as "we made it", they prefer to not talk about it and most wouldn't care.
Very odd indeed, there's nothing wrong with saying "we collaborated with _____ to make sensors suitable for our needs".

Yeah, you can tell he's not a professional documentary maker. A lot of hard work has gone into this video, no doubt, but its pacing is way off, and sometimes it feels like you're being beaten over the head with the information. Less is more in these cases. While I understand the desire to get every detail you discovered out there, sometimes you have to trust your viewers to get the point without, say, listing every single professional organization Eric Fossum is a member of too prove he's an unimpeachable source. That whole section about RED not crediting the sensor makers was probably worth a couple of sentence, at most.
There are a lot of professional documentary makers out there, and the RED story (this version here) is very interesting. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there wasn't someone out there who would be interested in taking all the material in this series of videos and turning it into a professionally produced 60 or 90 minute film.

And they keep using use same Cineon gamma curve (but with slightly extended dynamic range modification) in IPP2 color science under brand RED Log3G10. Cineon gamma curve was developed by Kodak in early 90's and was based on real film stock gamma resonse for film scan purposes. I know that there was some personal gain for Jinni Tech in uncovering the truth around RED Media, but this has gone to a whole other level. I'm glad that this kind of stuff is being revealed. I've never been a fan of companies lying about what their products actually are. It doesn't bother me if a piece of the camera comes from another country or company just be honest about it. Also the overblown marketing jargon just gets annoying. I feel like RED wanted to carry this massive prestige like Apple did with the Apple 2 ( not saying that Apple is much better in terms of Marketing Jargon) and now it's all catching up to them that they really aren't that different than any other camera manufacturer.

I think it could also be said that people that defend RED still must feel betrayed that all the tech was cheap, yet they paid the premium RED price thinking this somehow makes them an elite cinematographer and gets you in some sort of club, a sort of financially unattainable resolution/codec club . The lines between expensive and affordable tech are blurring quickly, companies like Blackmagic Design are producing the same or better images out of sensors for fractions of the cost RED has set. RED is gonna keep being RED and ignoring these facts, it is still up to you if you want to continue to buy into the bullshit.

    • @annekedebruyn7797

I disagree that BM puts out a similar image and have their own issues but I personally don't feel betrayed at all.
While the RedOne was hot garbage, it was still an industry breaker like BM is now.
4k at such a price was unheard of.
I feel like the only people who might felt screwed were the actual buyers, not so much the renters.
The thing is that RED gets away with it because of their design. Even if the sensors were off the market, the sensor was good and the small size meant a lot for the change in the industry where everything was still dominated by fully "prebuild" camera systems vs REDs modular design.
I guess what I am trying to say is that it's easy to (well deserved) dirt on RED.
But people forget that the brand did a lot for modernizing cameras.
As a professional user I really don't care how cheap it is or what they market it as.
If its right for the job I will rent it regardless.
Hell, want to look into shading marketing?
Look into the postproduction hardware and software or even worse, TV gear.

    • @thetooth
      @thetooth 4 роки тому +1

@@annekedebruyn7797 Whats funny is URSA footage can be made to look like alexa or red footage fairly easily, most of the differences now are down to codec and color space. For example you can take an image from a bmpcc 4k and process it with red ipp2 and while the accuracy is off by a mile(there are real differences in sensor design here, half as many green pixels for one), you get fantastic highlight roll off and a very pleasing "cinematic" image compared to the BM profile.
But I agree, back when the one came out everyone was renting them and dreaming about owning one for the simple fact that they were the most affordable and accessible option at the time for half the cost of an alexa in most cases. And you really did get a great image.
At this point in time it's more important to look at what other functionality a camera provides rather than resolution wars, as the difference between a 4k and 8k, is starting to push the point where it just doesn't matter anymore.

What they did was a lot of 1080 pictures at the same time with the 4 sensors glue one to another, then with software they suck it up using that technology. Redcode is Wavelet compressed, and far from the first example - I recall a product called a Quadrant Q-motion 250, a PCI (not PCIe) based analog capture card in the 1990's, for capture of Std Def video, back when a Pentium 2 was a fast PC.

Don't know where the manufacturing takes place, but afaik they mostly use off-the-shelf sensors and fpga's and add the "blackmagic" with software. That's the only way they can hit those very budget friendly price points and honestly I couldn't care less as long as the image I get looks good. For their flagship ursa sensor they apparently funded the R&D (to spec) and now have exclusive rights on it. But they never claimed to R&D their own sensors.
Same thing with red: I don't care if they bought the sensor elsewhere. I just don't get why they have to (allegedly) lie about it. Just be honest and say

    • @GouthamRavee
      @GouthamRavee 4 роки тому +6

DPI is arbitrary until you go to print. DPI shouldn't be used to discuss anything in the digital world since pixels is all that matters at a high level for resolution. 72 came about because dot matrix printers were usually 144 DPI, so it was easy to remember that the image on your 72 dpi monitor would be around 1/2 the resolution of the print. If your entire workflow is digital, as in you shoot on a digital camera, you edit on a digital system, you render out to a digital file, and present the final product on a digital system such as a flat screen TV or a digital projector you don't need to worry about DPI.

Watching the interviewer stumble over that and Jim try to understand how what THE INTERVIEWER and blogger/audience member THINK is working redcode, was shown, when it was manual process not the code itself working. So he is right on that one, Jim is.
TWO. I get the impression that Fossum posting on the forums about who gets credit for red sensor awards what he's actually doing is fishing to see if his old student got A BIG PAYCHECK and is keeping quiet, which is precisely what happened per their " not looking for anymore clients or funding" post.
