I played No Man's Sky back in 2016 on launch day for about an hour or two, put it down and never felt the need to return to it. Then I heard over the years the hype slowly ramping up and apparently the updates being awesome, so after seeing Light No Fire and getting very interested in that and then seeing the Worlds Part 1 trailer I decided to give it another go and...
...I haven't been able to put it down. I'm thoroughly hooked.

As another comment pointed out, I highly recommend "The Engoodening of No Man's Sky" by Internet Historian to clarify what happened with No Man's Sky's development pre-launch.
Sean is just a guy who likes making games, and had all these wondrous visions for No Man's Sky well before they could be realistically realised. His casual and nerdy ramblings about the game pre-launch were conflated with promises by the internet - which is extremely reasonable and that's where he majorly messed up, but a little insight into his context clarifies the lack of malice in his intentions. I think we need more passionate people like him in development teams.
That video really helps to emphasise the difference between a liar and someone who's just... bad at PR, in a toxic publisher situation, whilst holding the weight of the internet's hype on his inexperienced and naive shoulders. He and HG have more than redeemed themselves, and it's important for gamers to recognise nuance in these scenarios when there are plenty of actual liars in the gaming community.
Great video by the way! I'm a day 1 player and I love seeing more people diving into this game. We used to be a small community and with all the updates, the game's had so much positive exposure and new people jumping on board. Glad you've found yourself having fun with it despite how janky it can be :D

A couple of years ago the VR aspect used to be blurry and with variable frame rate, which made it an uncomfortable experience. Has this been improved? And does it require a 4090?

@JohnShewbrook I can't speak on PCVR but PSVR2 is absolutely insane, the foveated rendering fixes alot of issues that VR had. I genuinely cant go back to flat screen anymore.

@@SauteKing8760I originally played it on a quest 1. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work with the 2. I’m currently downloading the game onto a newer PC build. My kid has been bugging me to try it. We have a 2 and 3. It was amazing enough with the quest 1. I can’t sit and play it for hours tho. Needs to be taken in small doses. You can play your save regularly too.

@@JohnShewbrook i 4090 certainly would help, but you can play NMS in VR on lower end systems around the class of an RTX 3070 Laptop or RTX 2070 SUPER and Ryzen 5 3600X. But you need to know how to tweak the settings to get a decent experience. If you use a Quest headset you need Virtual Desktop and permanently enable SSW frame generation as well as sharpness and upscaling options as well as ENHANCED settings in game and DLSS. This allows you to play at 72Hz if you can deal with the frame generation artefacts that appear sometimes. Here is a clip playing with my RTX 3070 Laptop: ua-cam.com/video/OdCCkCBrAOs/v-deo.html
You will get a better experience using a RTX 4070 or higher GPU and faster CPU.

To be fair, they failed at launch and fixed their mistake, which is rare for studios nowadays, especially for free where as most studios would have just run with the money and abandoned the game.
Hello games has earned a level of respect from me few studios ever will.
      And i preordered the game.
The only promise they made at launch they haven't fullfilled is planets orbiting the sun(s), suns are still skybox but they chose to keep it like that because according to their judgement it would become too confusing for players.
In that they're probably right if you factor in binary and trinary starsystems (as in 3 body problem)

I'll raise my hand and admit to being one of the few weirdos who actually kinda liked No Man's Sky from the beginning, from launch. Maybe it's because I wasn't really plugged in to gaming scene at the time and was totally unaware of all the hype, oblivious of all the expectations and false promises. Maybe it's because the solitary, mostly aimless exploration at my own pace appealed to my personality. Or maybe it's because I'm a Roger Dean fan, and the game felt like wandering through endless Roger Dean paintings.
I'm playing again now, and I'm hooked, I love it. But you know, there's so many things to do now that I feel almost scatterbrained, and I'm finding it hard to keep track of all the quests and sub-quests, hard to pick a goal and stay focused on it!

My first game back in the Atlus Rises days I didn't leave the starter planet (a radioactive world I named Shin Gojira after the resident tyrannosaurs) for around 60 hours. A well known glitch catapulted me to the other side of the planet before I was ready to leave and I lost my starter location which I'd had a blast thoroughly exploring, as well as the base I'd found nearby (but not claimed yet). Back then the immersion and lonely atmosphere was strong-I really felt like a lone astronaut lost in a weird universe. I could've just flown into space and hit the station but was determined to find my way back to something familiar and proceeded to orienteer my way across the planet looking for landmarks and using a memory of the portal's compass position to make my way 'home'. Best playthrough I've ever had and where I learned you could engage with most of the systems in the game on a single world if you wanted to.

There’s a lot of core issues that still need to be addressed like the messy and confusing UI and all the procedural generated locations that look the same. Game still needs living breathing cities on planets that make the world feel more alive. There’s a lot of potential if they keep adding stuff like this and I’m glad they’re still at it. They built a shallow ocean, they just gotta continue to make it deeper. A good idea might be adding more unique set locations like in starfield (though i dislike that game) that aren’t procedurally generated in other galaxies or planets.

Sometimes I come back to a refiner and find it empty. Only till later find that the contents are there. They were just missing for a time. There are a number of bugs in the game that have bothered me for years and they’re not being addressed. For example, building underground is still an issue. I started NMS late but still the first month of release. I only missed expeditions 1, 2, and 3 now including the Redux’s. I also play exclusively in VR now and I went from someone who swore against playing in or even touching the water if I didn’t absolutely have to, to making my own underwater homes now with the new update my fears be damned it is absolutely stunning and beautiful in VR.❤ So glad I only took a break from the game but never gave up on it. HG is my games company of choice now.

There's two to three main things that are annoying for new players.
1.) Playing through the main story with friends is essentially impossible since multiplayer seems to still break scripts.
Stuff starts working again if no other player is in the same system, but it's still a massive pain having to hop in and out of systems just so that one person can finish the next task. Don't expect to do stuff together other than exploring space, building bases and doing Nexus missions. Even expedition missions tend to bug out in multiplayer which was especially jarring on the previous one which advertised a free-play weekend to play the expedition and explore the game together with friends...
2.) A lot of the content that was added over the years feels a bit "tacked on" if you pay attention. Nowadays you get introduced to sentinel ships pretty early which gives you a ship that's not only basically free but also better than most stuff you can buy. Some stuff is also locked behind main campaign progression (possibly so that everything doesn't trigger at once) which is fine, but the timing is often a bit weird. There's a spot where you make your first bigger star system jump using an "unusual" method (I won't go into details) and *right after that* the tutorial for constructing underwater bases and craft is started. It's super confusing until you realize that it's just part of a previous update and is not actually related to the campaign *at all* but was just placed behind this specific trigger for some reason.
3.) There's a ton of more-or-less annoying bugs right after bigger updates. They get fixed really quickly, but if you cannot make backup saves then it might be a good idea to just not play the game and wait a week until the major stuff is fixed.
And yes, do play the main campaigns. You'll get quite important things that can't be lost and also can't be found anywhere else.

I been playing and enjoying Star Citizen for years now on and off like I play most games. I didn't think I would like Starfield, but have played it for over a month and went through Unity 4 times and about to do my 5th. It doesn't have the amazing simulation of Star Citizen nor the same feeling of landing on a planet or moon, powering down your ship and just hearing nothing while enjoying the serenity or the excitement of investing all your money in a load of cargo and hoping to make it across the universe and land at a distant city without getting blown up or pirated and loose it all. It doesn't have the feeling of manually landing your giant ship in a small hanger it barely fits in, But Starfield has some great stories, especially the first time through as long as you don't read spoilers. I downloaded Icarus and hated the first hours playing it and almost quit, but once I got past just trying keep enough food, oxygen and clean water to actually build my first shelter it's kept me hooked so much I haven't played Starfield in almost a week. These 2 games are the first 2 I've really played a lot that weren't persistent multi-player worlds where everything I do won't just be over once I've played a week or two. Starfield Has great re-playability. My last Unity I ended up in one of many alternate universes and I'm feeling more powerful every trip through. Icarus has several expansion worlds out so it would keep me going until I just get bored. I like the idea of No Man's Sky, but I just can't get over the art style being more cartoonish, but I may have to give it a try if/when I get bored with Icarus. Of course come October I'll be playing Call of Duty with 5-6 grandkids through fall and winter. Star Citizen has had a major update and keeps calling me back. It would be like learning new for a lot of things, but I'm not ready for a Space Simulator that's much slower paced. I'm always looking for my next game and I may have to put aside the dislike of those graphics and give it a try. I learned that lesson many years ago when I tried WOW over amazing graphics many years ago and again with Starfield after playing Star Citizen for so long.

The first-person FOV still doesn't match what the number in the settings say. 100 is more like 60 and it's worse the closer you get to a wall or whatever. Even overriding the settings to 140 still makes it to what feels like 80 or 85. It's so bizarre this is still a thing.

correction, the last time numbers surged like this was the outlaws update. Either way though, nice video for an awesome game that keeps getting bigger with each update, not always better but definitely bigger :D. My opinion is that I agree that NMS is one of the best space games out there but I would amend the fact that in this particular game, there's an absolute ton to do but most of it falls into its own standalone content island that has little to no interaction with the other many content islands in the game. We have companion creatures that are 99% useless, wing mates deal next to 0 damage, that special staff you have to work 20+ hours to get is just like every other multitool so isn't worth grinding for unless you just like the look, we have pirate raids on planetary bases but no way for said bases to defend themselves save for your own intervention, settlements are mostly useless resource sinks, food buffs aren't strong enough to become actually useful let alone actually eating is a pain... when you play long enough you start finding the cracks, but even with these cracks the game is great and deserves a look. The important thing to remember is that if you play this like you would any other survivalcraft by mad dash grinding to become a god, you'll find yourself bored with this game soon after you finish that task because here, the journey is greater than the destination.

The spacegame that shall not be named? That only can be STARFIELD - a lackluster uninspired clusterf*ck from Bathesta with a built in hardstop. If you gather too many objects (outposts!) the savefile will be corrupted - that never fixed bug ended in uninstalling the game (in rage!!!) after some 150 hours of grind... 🤷‍♂️

The first time i learned about this game was from the magazine my younger brother brought home when i was in middle school. There were these beautiful whole page-screenshots and colorful arts, and it was saying all this stuff about endless universe and exploring, i was excited af! But at the time i only had a crappy laptop barely capable of running flash games. 2 years later i got a pc as a present, still crappy but i was able to run the game on it (gt 720 gpu or something like that). I installed it on HDD and it was loading for over 30 minutes lmao. lowest settings and resolution, constant stutters, i couldn't play like that. 2 more years later i bought myself an upgrade (gtx 1060, 16G of ram), and this rig was actually capable of playable fps in NMS, i played for several hours but found that the game was really... uncomfortable? Movement, gathering, flying, everything felt bad, i also couldn't immerse myself when i'm in 3rd person, so i thought that was it, the game sucks and it's not what i was hoping for. Recently they dropped the 5.0 trailer and i was surprised, felt really nostalgic, but also in a way "don't give me hope" because i don't wanna deal again with the contrast of expectations and reality. I now have a 3070, 1440p 165hz screen, installed the game on nvme ssd. It loaded in under 30 seconds. And i don't know how much my graphics settings contributed to it, but i was STUNNED. my spawnpoint was a beautiful planet with red grass, fps was perfect and stable, i also found out you can go in 1st person. So i disappeared from the world for the last couple of days playing the game 16 hours a day XD. It feels great, i'm so glad im finally getting the feeling i was craving for since seeing the screenshots 8 years ago. The only major bad thing is the weird bug, that makes your VRAM full and causes massive fps drop if you touch dlss options while in game, and dlss options are also inconsistent they're sometimes go from Ultra-Quailty to Performance and sometimes from Quaility to Ultra-Performance. And Ultra-Performance doesn't show anything it just makes the screen white lol. Well i solved it and now just trying not to spoil myself the plot if there's any, because youtube's for you page after the 5.0 update is just 50% no man's sky. I hope everyone is enjoying the game as much as me!
