    Ms. Vaskelainen, your reaction to this song is easily in the top 3 on YT. I can say that with confidence because I have listened to hundreds of them, and I have the playlist to prove it. Because I lack originality, I will repeat what I've said elsewhere: In 50 years, this is what HomeFree will be known for. Great reaction, I'm looking forward to many more from you.

    When people mention that Adam Rupp is the only one in the group without facial hair, they don't realize that he needs to manipulate his hands and mouth as he makes these sounds and a beard would interfere with that ability.

    It's a blend of bluegrass music and country. The sounds have elements of the southern blend of Kentucky, Alabama , Bayou, and surrounding regions. The humming sound is mimicking a harmonica.

    Ok - back to you again Anna! Isn't it strange that being a rock and metal fan I enjoy listening to a cappella bands so much? I guess I really am weird, but what can I do about it? I guess nothing, because I really do love very different - and often very distant from each other - kinds of music. I love this performance, this song! Maybe it's because I really like country music - not always and not all of it, but I do. And the country vibe is very present here. But there is something else - how in very different ways people can be talented! Some are masters of the guitar, some are masters of the drums, some are masters of the keyboard.... And some are masters of the most natural instrument - their voice! This is amazing and beautiful!
    But but - I am a little disappointed - Anna, where is your hat? You look incredibly beautiful in it, and it would have fit this song perfectly today!
    Ha, ha - see you next time!

    These guys have a remarkable range of genres in which they excel and still give a good country twist. To follow up this one, you may want to react to their cover of Boyz 2 Men's "End of the Road" and/or a cover of Crosby, Still, and Young's "Helplessly Hoping". At any rate, it's a very deep rabbit hole. Have fun!

    Old Kentucky vibes starting with a little bit Australian Didgeridoo, great country acapella of this male group. Vocal harmonica sound suggesting playing this instrument which actually is not there. Home Free, such a brilliant acting performance with the song Man in Contant Sorrow in perfect music harmony.

    • @jeffstumpf9129
      @jeffstumpf9129 2 роки тому +6

      No, the didgeridoo has nothing to do with traditional Southern Appalachian Music. That instrument he’s imitating is a “jaw harp”, also known as a “juice harp” (because it causes a lot of saliva), which is placed in the mouth and plucked, or stroked with a finger. It’s sometimes mistakenly called “Jew’s harp” because “juice harp” wasn’t heard correctly.

      Jew's harp. Nothing to do with the biblical people or religion. In this case the word Jew comes from the word Jaw, or mouth. In fact the harmonica is a Jaw (mouth) harp as well. The only difference basically is the Jaw harp has 1 reed whereas the harmonica (mouth harp) has many reeds.

    This is a very old southern US song from about 1900, so it has some of those musical features that led to country and bluegrass.
    To really hear their blend, you may want to try one of their bare naked harmony songs like Helplessly Hoping.
    And for some of Austin's range, react to When A Man Loves A Woman, which is an old soul/R&B classic.

    So many great songs to choose from with these guys. "End of the Road" Rob shows off his blues chops, but Austin has a big role. "When a Man Loves a Woman" is Austin's showcase. "Brothers in Arms" is a showcase of Tim's bass, but Adam Chance adds a lot of sweet baritone. Adam Rupp (human sound machine) has gotten even better at harmonica - check out "Workin' for a Livin'" - that also features Adam Chance (baritone/bass and "Guitar" on backing tracks I think) as lead.
    These guys have a GREAT sense of humor, so don't forget to check out the "Butts Remix/Medley" for a laugh (with still phenomenal singing). This one was before Adam Chance joined the group , so you'll see Chris Rupp here.
    After you're familiar with the guys and their roles in the group, "Mayday" is a must, but it's best to do it right after "Brothers in Arms" because it's also a Tim Foust (bass) lead. Do NOT do "Mayday" until you're familiar.

    • @Kodiak660
      @Kodiak660 2 роки тому

      Anna could react to Mayday tomorrow and not miss a thing, she is a sharp one. I have seen "Do NOT do "Mayday" until you're familiar." backfire more times than it should. Some reactors can have Mayday as the 2nd song because they are just that good. I have full faith that Anna could do it as her 3rd song.

    This song is part of a specific genre called "Bluegrass". They did very well, but a specialist in Bluegrass is Patty Loveless. You should listen to the live version of "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive". It is about the life - and death - of coal miners in Eastern Kentucky. The fiddles (violins) in the song are a good example of the influence of the Scots-Irish settlers on the culture of the southern Appalachian mountains in the United States.

    This is one of my favorites from Home Free which captures the original Soggy Bottom Boys style/genre while putting their own spin and unique touches (which you had so much fun with as a human harmonica!) The creativity to capture and use sounds not usually thought to come out of the human mouth is such a treat in acapella music. Mixing organic sounds into musical accompaniment and turning vocal harmonies into more than five voices is brilliant. This capability is especially noteworthy and spectacularly done in Home Free's treatment of a cover of Johnny Cash's classic, "Folsom Prison Blues." Very creative and a masterpiece worth your wonderful analysis skills. Regardless of what artist, or song, I look forward to your next reaction!

  • @jmcosmos

    The arrangement here is based on the one from the movie _O Brother, Where Art Thou?_ by Dan Tyminski. The song itself has been knocking about for more than a hundred years; its first appearance in print was in 1913, and doubtless it was in circulation before that.
    Chance's continuo on "didgeridoo" reminds me of Tuvan throat singing, and I suspect he's doing something a lot like it.
    Adam once said he bases his harmonica on the voice of Cartman from _South Park_ and then he starts bending sound.

      Sorry for remarking upon it, but my father was a polyglot and spoke five languages. All I have is a musical ear - he was a violinist and a cabinet maker - I suspect something has passed along the lineage! - and I'm an artist. That is - apologies if I use the wrong word! - Finnish? Wow! It's extraordinary! Wonderful reaction by the way. Dad passed away in 1969 and before he could pass any of his knowledge to me. He also wanted me to blend in as much as possible with the other children at school. A saddening, though understandable decision.

    A very interesting take on a modern version of a very American type of music. This was originally a bluegrass song. Bluegrass is what happens when Irish, Scottish, some escaped slaves or freed black people, and maybe a Finn or two settle in the very remote Appalachian Mountains. We get Bluegrass. Very nice.
    As for the vocal harmonica, all of us poor kids growing up in the South (meaning the Southern States) we all did this since we didn't have any money for instruments. Some of us were pretty good at it too.
    Bluegrass was originally a type of music that came from a very, very, poor part of the US. For example, I have a book that has instructions from an old timer from these folks that teaches you how to make a banjo out of a cat, or pretty much any animal will do. That's pretty poor. I'm sure that the Finnish people, especially the older ones know what I mean. There might be a few who remember the Winter War.

    Very nice reaction! Love the switching back and forth from Finnish to English to keep us on our toes. 😁 An aside, I did a cycling trip to Sweden several years ago and, with my German background, I thought learning a bit of Swedish would be easy. Not so much. That Scandinavian twist really changes things. Finland is still on my list of places to visit. 😊 Anyway yes, Home Free. They do a lot in that country genre but they can't really be so easily categorized. Not the right time of year I know, but listen to their version of Auld Lang Syne. No beat boxing or nasally twangs, just rich harmonies to a classic song that is decidedly *not* country. They produce an almost barbershop quartet-ish feel to that song in places. Love your reaction!

These guys are awesome - and the errrrs and "kermit" tones are spot on for country music here in the states. one thing you missed- as most do - at the end of Tim's bass solo - listen to that transition - he drops an octave there and a lot of reviewers miss it. cheers!
