    At first I was thinking “okay, the friends were teenage boys and probably making sick jokes amongst each other not thinking it was serious” but to then realise some of those boys were waiting outside of the woods for him, clearly knowing what was taking place 🥴 those boys were accomplices, they allowed him to murder that poor young girl without intervening in any way, least of all calling police or an adult to help. And to then look on the brutally bludgeoned body of a class mate. I think maybe more than one of the friendship group was unhinged

      In terms of both cost-effectiveness and ethics, capital punishment would be the logical choice, at least it would be had this been tried in the USA. It costs 60k USD per year to keep him in prison, and it's pretty blatantly obvious he's going to kill another innocent person(s). At the very least he should be moved to an economy class prison in another country where it won't cost British taxpayers as much.

  • @leopardprints

    This was such a tragic case. The 'free breakfast' headlines in the media, trivialised what was basically a domestic violence murder in a teenage relationship. She got in a new relationship which was the trigger, and he pretended he wanted to get back together with her. He was emotionally abusive towards her during their relationship, it was well known in their school circle of friends. Scary that his mates thought it was OK to 'joke' about murdering an ex-girlfriend.
    I know you'll do this story justice. Poor Rebecca and her family. I hope he is never released.

    • @darkwoods1954
      @darkwoods1954 2 роки тому +7

      I agree. The ''killed for a free breakfast'' thing makes a good headline but that's obviously not why he killed her. He had been planning to kill her before the free breakfast pact was made.

    • @leopardprints
      @leopardprints 2 роки тому +4

      @@darkwoods1954 Yeah, I hated how the media reported on it. They took one small aspect of the case and made that the focal point. It was totally disrespectful to Rebecca and her family, minimised what a monster Davies was and the history of abuse in the relationship and how much planning went into the murder.
      Had the media reported on it properly it could have been an opportunity to raise awareness about abuse and domestic violence in teen relationships. The spreading rumours and how he used others to ostracise her. He was clearly possessive and his behaviour was escalating.
      I'm glad that Emma explained this case properly in such a sensitive way.

    • @NewMayfair
      @NewMayfair 2 роки тому +3

      But, and this is going to be an unpopular opinion here, but Emma has done exactly the same. Right there in the title of the video. I agree that the breakfast had nothing to do with it, it was somewhat incidental and he would have killed her anyway, and saying he did it FOR the breakfast trivialises his actions.. But can we be consistent in our criticism? If it's inappropriate for someone we don't like (The Media)to do it, then someone we do like (Emma) deserves the same criticism for doing the same thing.

      I get that kids might be interested in weapons because of films and games they play regularly. I dont think there's anything wrong with an adult who collects knives because they find them interesting and cool. What I can't understand is how any parent would think it's appropriate to let their child collect weapons of any sort. Its totally inappropriate and kids do stupid things, often impulsively without thinking first. It's a parent's job to set boundaries to ensure their child grows up safely and is well adjusted. Even if that upsets their child or makes them angry.

    There is a young boy, maybe 11-12 years old currently running around terrorising our neighbourhood. The other day he tried to get another child to push me over from behind and laughed in my face when I confronted him. I'm not young neither elderly (40's) and he was acting to assault me. I suspect in a few years he will be laying into his mother and then onto lamping anyone he feels like it.
    There have been numerous complaints about him and when I mentioned this to our Housing Officer she said there's nothing she can do. I remembered Emma's recent video talking about early intervention in violent troubled tw/eens - catch them early, compassionate learning Emma said.

    Davies will never change and should never be released. His cold, callous and brutal extinguishing of a precious life which held such promise is irredeemable and his belated 'confession' shows that he is governed only by his own self interest. Sending love and wishing strength for Rebecca's family and friends... they are the people Davies burned with his vile act and their views should always be taken into account by those who have the ability and power to do the right thing. Those people should make sure he is never able to harm anyone else.

    I feel heartbroken for Sonia and the rest of her family, imagine knowing a boy you welcomed into your family and treated like another one of your own children, brutally caved your daughters head in...."FOR A FREE BREAKFAST" !!!!.......she must literally feel like clawing her skin off knowing he will be released at some point and be free to build a new life for himself, or (KILL AGAIN)....and as for those other 2 boys !!....they need to be held accountable for the part they played, if they had done the right and moral thing chances are Rebecca may be alive today. What a senseless and completely avoidable tragedy.

    Seeing as it seems his friends were never really punished for their behaviour, all we can hope is they end up in a loving relationship & end up having a couple of daughters that they really care about.
    It would be tough to reflect back on their behaviour and put their daughters in the place of this poor girl and not feel disgust at their behaviour.
    This is about the worst story I have read & I wonder if he already harboured hatred for her before that weekend or or something actually did happen that caused him to switch. What a freak.

    A bit of an update.
    It seems Rebecca's family will forever be indelibly linked to the family of Joshua Davies as he is now the uncle of Sonia Oatley's grandchildren.
    Rebecca's sister and Joshua's brother have two small children together.

    So we can deduce that Rebecca asserted herself when it came to being intimate, possibly even said “no” to him (which he clearly wasn’t accustomed to), triggering the events that ensued. Knowing your philosophy on teenage offenders, do you think that Joshua could be rehabilitated in order to re-enter society Em? Am inclined to think that it is ingrained and any perceived progress he showed would be ingenuine.
    Another great video. Thank you Em for your efforts.

    Hi Emma, my husband and I absolutely love your podcasts, you are amazing, we watch every one and really appreciate how much hard work you put into researching each tragic story. One of my neighbours was murdered in Inverness nearly 40 years ago and the man who did the crime only served around 8 years in jail, I was only around 12 at the time and the man who committed this crime at the age of 18 would be walking the streets at the age of 26 to either start a new life or re-offend, I remember thinking was that all my neighbours life was worth an 8 year jail sentence after he had basically slaughtered such a beautiful lady. How many killers and paedophiles re-offend after release from prison, prison is not a deterrent offenders have it to easy!!!!! And judges, lawyers and those on the parole boards should be accountable when these evil perpetrators are released from prison and given free reign to walk our streets! Thank god for people like you who highlight and stand up for the innocent and beautiful people who’s lives are destroyed by these MONSTERS !!!!

    I would be absolutely terrified at the thought of this monster being released from his cage if I was Rebecca’s family. This animal has no conscience and he’s probably infuriated at the things that have been said about him. It doesn’t take much to tick him off. I would take my family and run far far away. While he’s still breathing the nightmare will never be over for poor Sonia and her loved ones 😢

    I remember reading about this in detail at the time & as the Mom of two girls, realising just how almost impossible it is, to keep them safe. Rebecca’s family, did everything right, welcoming Joshua into their home, getting to know him, supporting their daughter in every way possible etc etc & yet, she was still murdered by him. I cannot even begin to imagine her terror, at being attacked and murdered by someone she loved and her family have got to live with that, for the rest of their lives, they don’t get a sentence of 14 years & it’s all over (even less, if he’s deemed to have made good progress in prison!) Thanks so much Emma, for the depth in which you cover, all of these cases, for the respect you show the victim and their families & for your insights along the way. My Wednesday & Sunday evenings are now set in stone!!

    I was in 7th grade when I started hanging out with this kid named Brian and one day at his house he was telling me about his plan to poison the school lunches. He legit had a plan to put poison in the lunches at school so I basically argued with him about it until I felt he was being unreasonable and serious. I told a teacher. I was never a kid who told on or “snitched” on friends but that was a line crossed. He got into some pretty big trouble and it made him hate me but that kid was unhinged for real. I wonder if he ever got help for that and if he is doing ok now.
