This channel is THE best. The analysis of the crime is first class the details so carefully researched is presented in a rollercoaster narrative superbly timed. I work hard as a physicist every day this is my way of unwinding delving with such precision you feel like you were personally involved if only as a privilege observer. Truly the best in the business congratulations Emma a real professional

My son is autistic so I completely understand the bullying, obsession and stress induced psychosis. My son was never violent but I can see how that could happen. I think this lad was let down. He should have had help. Such a great episode Em.xx

Yeh. It’s too easy to forget that he was a CHILD who desperately needed help & support!
We’re English but we lived & worked in the USA when our children were born. My son was 10 when we returned home so he attended our village junior school for the last term before going up to senior school. He was SHOCKED by the rampant bullying that he witnessed in school!!
As a result of Americas school shootings they have a, “Zero tolerance” policy on bullying. They have anti-bullying classes from their first year in school. They were taught (in an age appropriate way) that bullies are, a bit pathetic really!! 🙂 To bully is really a cry for help from someone who feels powerless & never learnt how to ‘use their words’ so we should feel sorry for them & immediately tell a grown-up so they can help.
It was a bit embarrassing to be a bully in his American school. He thought that MANY of the kids in his new English school were behaving like toddlers who didn’t know any better. HE HATED THAT SCHOOL! Thank goodness it was only 1 term…
Why, in 2021, do some schools STILL allow bullying??!!? We all know how painful it is & how much damage it can do…or so I thought!!

Also most autistic people (my son included 12 yo) have a super strong sense of right and wrong, they have a strong opinion on the injustice and wrong doers, my son hates for people to "break the rules" he absolutely knows right from.wronf and is passionate about enforcing it (to anyone who'll listen lol) maybe he was on the spectrum but I'd add in he was probably suffering from a personality disorder along with the broad spectrum diagnosis. Imo :)

Thanks Emma! I found this really interesting!
I am also on the Autistic Spectrum and my own Aspergers Syndrome went undiagnosed for a big chunk of my childhood- I am also interested in serial killers but definitely more interested in the 'Why' they kill as opposed to the 'How' they kill! I suppose that is the key difference. I find it frustrating when the media pick up on the fact that an offender is on the Autistic Spectrum because the truth is that having Autism means that a lot of people are actually more empathic; we know what it's like to not always feel like we're part of society and we don't want to inflict our pain on others! Thank you for helping to challenge the myths surrounding Autism and for always managing to balance your empathy and personal experiences of working with offenders with the seriousness of what they have done. I'm not a psychiatrist but I do believe that if he is released, he might be somebody with the potential to reoffend and/or meet the American criteria for a serial killer. Looking forward to Sundays episode!

Emma, a case you might find interesting is the Chicago ripper crew. They committed some of the most heinous murders I've ever heard of. One of the killers is on parole and in a half-way house, which is just unbelievable. A little known fact involves one of the detectives who solved the crime, Phillip Murphy. Murphy was the father of Susan Murphy-Milano (RIP). She was a dear friend of mine and dedicated her life to saving victims of domestic violence who believed they were going to be murdered. She developed the Evidentiary Abuse Affidavit, which can be presented to the court as evidence in a murder case when the victim is killed. Phillip Murphy was a domestic abuser. When Susan's mother finally got the courage to leave her husband he went to her home and shot her in the head and then killed himself. Susan found them. She was pregnant at the time. After the police finished their investigation, Susan found a tape in the answering machine that caught the entire crime. She heard him paceing around telling her dying mother it was all her fault. Susan always said he was a good cop but a terrible person and by no means a hero. The Chicago ripper crew created absolute terror in victims and the public at large. Take a look into them but do it on an empty stomach.

This is absolutely fascinating. With regard to this boy losing a grandmother he loved dearly, your point about how schools deal with loss is very important. I was a teacher at a high school, where we tragically lost a student to suicide. As a staff, we provided all sorts of care, including counselling, listening to students, providing comfort, giving students space, time and support. We also drew up a list of students we felt would be at risk of self harm. We were devastated when another teenager also took their own life. We actually called in experts, who explained we were wrong in our well-meaning support. We were advised to be much more assertive in supporting students. The tragic truth is that there’s no simple solution. I really wish there was, but there just isn’t.

I've only got 10 minutes into this video and your comments regarding how death is dealt with by adults with regards to parents/teachers/etc in the UK has already rung so true with me. My best pal at school was killed in a car crash when we were 15 and I sat next to an empty desk after that. One teacher asked me if I was alright and my parents gave it a brief mention because it was on the front page of the local newspaper and that was it, I was back at school the next day and had a day off a week later for his funeral. I think I'm about the same age as you Emma (but I don't have kids) so I certainly hope that these awful, unexpected tragedies for young people are dealt with in a more sensitive way now. Anyway, apologies for the ramble, back to what is already looking like a horrific story...

Another great video and more horrific graphic descriptions - I thought the last vid was bad enough but sheesh! Fortunately, my psyche wasn't knocked sideways because of my personal experiences when I was young and I went on to be fascinated by how the mind works and what drives people to commit such heinous crimes, or incredible acts of bravery for that matter.

Congrats on the 50th Episode Emma, been here from the 1st one and they are all brilliant. I look forward to every episode ❤
On this lad though, what a bloody waste of a life...good looking boy that I'm sure could have done anything with his life, I find it really sad. Surely he has got to be seriously ill to cause those kinds of injuries to the victims, I don't believe in evil just humans that can do terrible things.
A random thought - could a genetic predisposition for this type of violence be passed down from our early ancestors (very different but they say a fear of spiders could be).
    Thanks again Emma ❤

Hello Emma!! I Love Your Stories So Much!! I have Binge Watched All of Your episodes!! I Love the way You Break Down the Stories and tell about the victims, and preserve their memories and also explain about the horrible people that commit these Horendous crimes and what your theories are about why these people may have committed the crimes. Not matter what it Never Excuses what they have done, but helps to maybe explain Why some people turn out the way they do!!!! And also You have such a Calming Voice!!!! Thank You & Keep up the Great Work & Congratulations on Your 50th Episode!!!!

Thank you for covering this case, I have a son on the spectrum and you explained so well how an autism diagnosis doesn’t mean that you will go on to do these awful crimes and how the media can sometimes make it seem otherwise 😣
Keep doing what you are doing, you are amazing 🙌🏻

Why do we always miss the warning signs? Is it an overworked system? Do doctors just not interested or do they just like to put youth in a box and leave them there? It's hard to understand in cases like this its incredible it seems so obvious

I’m no psychologist but I work in an area that involves people who have committed murder/serious acts of violence while in the context of psychosis, often after/while hearing voices, and these people do NOT go into the gory details of their crimes, in fact many of them requires years and years of psychological treatment to even approach the subject of what they did while psychotic…either it’s just so difficult for them because they are traumatised or they just simply lack insight. These are not people who have blamed voices for their actions, because they were so under the grip of that “reality” at the time aka their psychosis. So I personally struggle with this guy blaming psychosis but that’s just me.

I hugely appreciate the way you speak about autism. My son has an asd diagnosis and he's the most empathetic person I've ever met. The thing that strikes me about robbing the cigars at knife point is that people on the spectrum will take examples from movies or books as to how they should behave in certain situations, so if he was planning on stealing those and his reference for that is holding someone up at knife or gun point, that's the appropriate way to approach the situation in his mind. The sane way I google which cutlery to use before I have to go to a wedding😅
