- Angela Wrightson was a vulnerable 39 year old woman who got brutally murdered in Hartlepool in 2014. Two teenage girls who have had their identifications made anonymous forever undertook a brutal attack on Angela and the only reason was for fun. Too many stones thrown from inside glass houses…Yes there are truly ignorant, nasty people abounding. I do think there are often so many who ridicule others to deflect attention from their own struggles or perceived inequities. If we could only learn to accept own own faults and misgivings, possibly we might be able to drum up the needed empathy we all so desperately need in the roughest of times. If we (people) were a little more caring and understanding Britain wouldn't be so broken and vulnerable people would have a chance to heal and live out their potential.

It's certainly not easy! Just a kind word and a smile can go a long way. Angela was tortured & murdered by 2 sociopaths. These 2 are defective. They will never have empathy, compassion, or conscience.
Hartlepool born and bred here, whilst Angela had her problems she wouldn't ever hurt anyone, I knew her personally and she was always kind to me, even when totally inebriated. Rip Angela x
I remember her in Darlington, Noone ever gave her a chance, Yes she was kind and wouldn't have hurt anyone, she was just extremely vulnerable. She deserved a better life than she got.

Not very far away at all and this broke my heart. This was a senseless evil murder.
I ended up in Hartlepool when I was going through a really, really bad patch. It was a terrifying place. There was a guy called Danny who kinda looked out for me. He had good taste in Music, and warned me about how dangerous the guy I was staying with was.
But that place....still have bad dreams about it.

When you spoke about her posting chocolate bars through for the kids made me feel so sad. Imagine having one of the most unfair and tragic starts in life and still trying to make good starts for those youngest. What a lovely thing for her to do. ❤
12 yrs sober here. To know what that poor, beautiful soul went through absolutely breaks me. I know what it feels like to believe you’re not wanted. I know what it feels like to believe you don’t matter. To know that she was tortured to death without ever having known love will haunt me. I only wish that, wherever she is, she’s feeling safe, loved, respected, and held in the arms of peace. As for the vile children who did this? There are no words except to say that sometimes pure evil exists without cause or provocation. Theirs are the faces of evil incarnate.

It was so gracious of you to describe Angela as tenderly as you did, she was a woman, she ought to have been loved and cherished, she should have been shown kindness and had a real connection to those that offered true friendship.
I get that she seemed unable to help herself but she was all alone in the world. No one should suffer that.
She may well have give up on herself and life after struggling against the tide for so long but she never deserved for her life to have been snuffed out in such a disgraceful, despicable way.
This case is arduous and is telling of the very worst in humanity.
Loneliness is a slow death. Reach out to someone if you or they are lonely, you never know you could save a life.
Emma I cannot explain how grateful I am that you’ve covered this case. I’m from Hartlepool, and remember so clearly ever detail of this horrendous crime.
What happened to Angela Wrightson was beyond sad and disgusting. And knowing the ages and that it was two school girls who carried it out makes it all worse.

What I’d said in the original reply was…
The girls’ sentences were quite confusing due to their ages.
But from the court transcripts it seems as though they were given a minimum sentence of 15 years. Therefore there is no guarantee they will be released at 15 years it will all depend on their actions at the time.
“For the murder of Angela Wrightson, I sentence each of you to detention during Her Majesty’s Pleasure. The minimum term I impose in each case is one of 15 years.”

Whenever I hear "snap chat murders" I automatically think of the Delphi murders (Abby and Libby). I've never heard about this case before. Poor Angela. Such a horrendous ending to a sad and troubled life...
Um, I feel like I've waited my entire life for someone to say that to me. I know it wasn't directed to me. But the part in the beginning of the video when you're talking about grief and that she didn't necessarily choose to live that way, moreso that life just happened to her. Um. I've been through a lot as a child/young adult. I feel like my entire life I've been grieving. And no one's ever acknowledged that it wasn't my fault or I didn't deserve it. Idk I've just never heard those words before and it's incredibly comforting even if it's indirectly. Maybe someday I'll hear it in person. Thank you for saying that. Everyone no matter who they are should hear that.

Cannot even imagine how shocking the pictures must have been to not have been shown in court. Didn't know about the Venables law though. Sickening that these people are given new identities and let out.
And the cost to the public is horrendous. Ian Huntley's girlfriend got a new ID, and security. But the press kept finding out where she was, and they still kept giving her new identies. Apparently £1 million was spent on protecting her. Venables, same thing. Multiple new identies, but he keeps getting caught watching/downloading kiddie porn, etc., so back to jail, only to be let out again with another new ID. It's ridiculous the amount of money spent on people who are proving to be serious offenders since being kids well into adulthood. When are the do-goodie psychiatrists, etc. realise some of these kids will never be "normal" as adults - and should be treat as such.
Venables and Thompson were a unique case. Children who murdered a child not long out of nappies. Unfortunately, their anonymity had to be protected. F and D were teenagers who murdered a vulnerable adult in the most horrific ways. It angers me when a murdered victim's human rights seem to end with their deaths. Where is the dignity and justice in that? They should have been tried as Adults. In the USA they'd be sat on Death Row Uncontrolled Animals get put down...End of. Keep up the good work Emma x
They didn’t even deserve not to be named or shamed, what they did to that little boy was horrible and that’s putting it lightly. They had the best life when they went away. They didn’t get punished x

They spent hundreds of thousands getting new identities and one of the men keeps breaking the identity rules and they have to reissue them which costs thousands of more dollars. 😑

Not that I disagree but since 2005 the US has banned the death penalty for juveniles. Personally I feel like if you wanna do a grown up crime you should be subject to the same grown up consequences.

Unfortunately they are living another life of hell the foster father SA some of the girls the money & clothes that where donated to them was stolen the case worker who said that she would personally see to their protect & safety didn't do her job. The state of California has failed these children twice beyond words

I can't seem to look at them as just "children" after what they've done.
They were old enough to understand death and what they were doing. I feel they deserve no mercy from the law or public, they showed none to Angela.

Correctly labeling them children is not equivalent to claiming they didn't understand death or that they necessarily deserve mercy. It is biologically and neurologically true that they were children at the time of the heinous crime.

Have a look at the Suzanne Capper murder, that too was horrific, it happened about the same time as the Bulger case so didn't get much media attention
I am all about upholding human rights, regardless of any personal circumstance. But I think the decision on the anonymity of the girls is such a stretch. You should not be protected from your guilty conscience. If you don't want to feel bad about what you've done, then consider NOT being violent. They obviously did not feel any remorse. I see no sense in the ruling.
You have such a compassionate way of exploring these stories and explaining the vulnerability of the victims.
This case makes me question the "Care" of local authority and foster parents. One of the girls seems to be below average intelligence . Much more needs to be done to help young people who have suffered abuse and can turn their anger and frustration into this kind of rage. These problems will continue until more investment is made into lives of children.

They could give the foster money to the parents & the majority of cases would be closed as most kids are in care for neglect, not abuse
I suffered worse abuse living in the care system in the UK, then I received living at home. Social services are corrupt. They lie to get the child taken away and have nobody to answer to.

I was a fall down drunk for over twenty years. I'm sober for over 3 years now but I remember reading this a while ago it broke my heart
My heart hurts for Angie, I can’t even imagine her final moments. Those girls unnerve me, if capable of harming such a defenseless woman as teenagers can you imagine what they’re capable of doing as adults? I’m glad they got that sentence.

I have seen this case before but I learned so many new details...thankyou for covering yet another case that raises awareness about kids who's identities are kept hidden..it is quite terrifying

I think it's crazy they don't release their names and they get new identities when they're released😳 Will they be on probation and watched or do they just get out with a clean slate? Thats ludicrous if they just get out with no conditions to ensure the safety of the public. I've never heard of this happening. My mind is blown.

This case always gives me such a deep visceral sadness whenever I hear it. I wish I could have gone back in time and given Angela the love and companionship that she craved so this didn't have to happen to her

Hi Emma, I don’t know if you read your comments or if I should email but you should research the infamous Irish case of “Ana Kriegel”. It’s still very fresh in our minds and it’s truly horrifying. The anonymity, drawings of violence and media driven issues is very similar to the Snapchat killers.

This case hits hard for me. My dad was an active alcoholic for years. The loveliest, most caring, gentle soul. Naturally he attracted less than savoury characters. They used his flat as a social club and he was always too afraid to ask them to leave. I never could give up on him and had many occasions where I would have to ask people to leave and deal with them. To the point where as an 18 year old I'd be sat in the car outside his flat in the early hours of the morning making sure he was safe. He had a head injury and was vulnerable. I was so proud of him when he eventually gave up the alcohol but sadly we lost him in September last year as the damage was already done. It's so hard trying to support someone in this situation and you can give your entire life up trying to do so. Ultimately if they aren't ready for the help or realise they need it, it won't happen. I hope Angela is in peace and can finally rest x
I felt so much sadness reading this. I've never known anyone personally who is alcohol dependent but my brother is a prolific drug user. I don't think people understand the desperateness family's feel to help their loved ones. Sadly my mum died this year from covid at only 54 and ive had to take her role of taking care of my brother. Its heartbreaking watching him kill himself because that is what he's doing slowly. He attempted to take his life last month because he don't want to live this way. Its tough for any addict in society especially with leeches. He's beat up and robbed often.
My heart really goes out to you, what an incredible daughter and such a young age to take on that responsibility. I hope life does treat you better ❤

No justice at all in the UK, it makes me sick and ashamed of this country! We need to get a grip and bring in the death penalty, they should never walk the streets again! Murder is murder whether its done by an adult or a child, they are evil regardless and should be locked up for good.

Im a Geordie and at the time when this happened, being 43 now I remember the rawness like yesterday how the people of Newcastle felt. Terrible, for the majority living in this poor, deprived part of town were close knitted, friendly, warming but some lost their way like Angela and many others. Best place for these girls.....I'm all about rehabilitation were possible but not for these, jail needs to be home for them, forever.

Victim blaming..I excaped a serial killer. I jumped from a car naked in the middle of the desert. I flagged down a car for help. I was cut up bad. The paramedic said I was lieing. It was a trick gone bad. All the cared about was WHY I got in the car with him,not WHAT happened. Luckily no one listened to her but she was the one who transported me from the desert to the hospital telling me I was a liar..this guy was going to rape,and kill me but I lied about WHY I got in the car..it hurt my soul. The cop who came,I told him what she was saying. He held my hand and said he didn't believe her and he was happy I was okay. Victim blaming sucks. My PTSD is mostly from her. The one who was supposed to save me. I spent 30 minutes on the way to the hospital telling my story to her over and over. But she kept telling me it was a trick gone bad and you know that..she killed me

Hi Emma, I love your presentation so much more natural than some of the other programs that over dramatise already dreadful circumstances. The way they scan folks eyes from left to right and everything is in the dark is a bit over the top. Watching you speak about people in a normal, natural way is so refreshing and not judging folk with problems. It’s like listening to a friend talk. Thank you so much.
I just discovered your channel and I’m so glad I did! Unexpected tears but worth it! LOL I can relate to the childhood you’ve described in many ways! I was blessed enough to have many good people around me through the years. I’ve not been wise and chose as an adult to suppress my feelings. It’s been a decade since that life and I wish it upon nobody! I wish to warn others and hopes to educate and prevent others from going though what I did. It doesn’t have to be this way. You can change with time and professional help! I now find it crazy in a way to be grateful for those trials because I’ve become more empathetic and wise! Having a clear mind and intellect is daily work for someone like me. I’m 47 and now feel excited to my future. My heart goes out to those who for one reason or another don’t receive that love I have. So when I see a need (within my own home first) I speak up and act more. I try not to offend in the process but often it’s going to happen but it’s to become better and live a more joyful life. Just finished watching. Em, the work, research and the love that you put into your work is above and beyond. The way that you “coloured in “ Ange and made her a three dimensional person of intrinsic value was beautifully done. My heart aches for her. I truly hope that Ange is some where better now, some where beautifully Devine , where she is surrounded by love, love love.
I’m nearly crying already and we are only 24 minutes in 🤦🏻♀️. I bet that every person that has struggled with alcoholism, abandonment, any (or all) of the things mentioned here, I bet they wish that they knew an Emma Kenny during this time. I do ❤️.
protecting their identity regardless of the offenders age equates to condoning this type of behavior. PERIOD. humans at all points need to be held accountable, the fact that Angela’s life both before and after death was completely disregarded is such an absolute sham on her legacy & that of the justice system. allowing her murderer’s to avoid shame & identification is downright unfair.

As someone who was abused as a child, raised in the system and turned to drug and alcohol abuse as a teenager and into my early twenties I have never and would never consider inflicting harm or death on another. I hate that people that have been through the system seem to get a reputation as turning into a monster because of what they have been through. Yes it can make you angry at the world but it doesn't make it ok for you to take it out on others. Their upbringing doesn't justify their behaviour!
This reminds me of the American case of Cindy Collier & Shirley Wolf - 2 teenage girls who savagely murdered an innocent elderly lady who simply let them in because they asked to use her phone. Those girls had really troubled backgrounds too and hadn’t known each other long before they committed the murder

You’ve given such a big insight into the case that you can’t get online. You’ve helped me understand better the motive, the background of these girls and the victim, and why their identities have been hidden. When I heard of this crime on tv I couldn’t believe how it was barely mentioned on the news. For a 13 and 14 year old to wandering the streets with no one caring for their return… society has failed these girls. I know these girls are vicious and dangerous and should be kept behind bars but it’s shocking how young people can be walking the streets like a ticking time bomb

My mother was murdered in 2002. Its not a very 'exciting' case but I was only 7 (almost 8) at the time and there was an investigation into the mental health care my dad (the murderer) received just prior. It would be interesting to see it covered however I understand its quite straight forward. My Mam was called Elizabeth Gallagher, the murderer, my dad, Thomas Gallagher. Shiremoor, Newcastle.

Hi Emma, don't know if you will read this but I just wanted to say I have become hooked by your channel! I am not normally someone who listens to true crime stories as they're generally just way too harrowing for me but you present these cases with expertise, passion and depth, and in such a thought-provoking way that I've found myself binge-watching your videos. I'm also in the UK and a lot of these cases I do remember hearing on the news at the time and being utterly horrified by them. In this case, your unpicking of the information given at the trial ended up chilling me most of all - the sheer immaturity of at least one of the girls - such a low level of awareness and thought. Anyway, thanks for doing what you do.

Thank you so much for once again managing to put the victim (and compassion for the victim) at the centre of this case- although you touch upon Angela having never really found her purpose in life, I think that her story and the utterly tragic circumstances in which she died mean that her legacy will be that if there are opportunities to get help, however small, they should be seized. She was definitely a woman whose life had intrinsic value, she deserved so much more (especially as a child) and nobody deserves to live the life that she lived or to die the way that she died. This was an utterly senseless murder. It is even more shocking when you consider the fact that her murderers were so young.
This episode raises serious questions about the care system and how it can play a part in criminalising young people, as well as how it can play a part in making children who go through the care system feel like they have no futures. I believe that both girls probably did see a part of their future lives mirrored in Angela. The fact that they attacked her with a mirror speaks volumes.
R.I.P Angela, I hope that wherever you are now, you are at peace.

Please do an update on the two boys who killed the two year old. This will piss you off. One didn't do well at all. He was pampered while in ( jail.. LoL) when in there he had sex with a teacher. He gets out and is arrested I believe twice for child porn..the other kid I believe is trying. Married and no arrests..the killer we're protected but not the victim..
.... In my opinion there's absolutely no question that if their identity is exposed, they will be targeted both upon release but even more so from other inmates.
Even in the prison system, general population has a major problem with people who prey on the weak and vulnerable, especially those who have physical or mental health issues.
Will find more morality in prison than either of these will ever be capable of....

There was an independent film released in the mid 90s called “Fun”. It was about 2 young teenage girls who go on a crime spree one day, which leads to them brutally murdering an older lady. It was shocking and stuck with me for a long time afterwards.
Hearing the girls giggling on the phone with emergency services in this case made me think of that film. For the film characters it was fun to take things too far and to release their pent up anger and frustration. They pushed one another along so that they did more together than they would’ve done on their own. I think that’s what happened in this case.

IMO those evil cowards brutally killed Angela simply because they could... frail and vulnerable like crushing a kitten underfoot... not because they saw their future selves in her... she was worth a thousand of those two savages. I can understand the outpouring of rage in those messages you read out. Unfortunately vile açts bring out the worst reactions in normally placid people like myself. This story was harrowing.... RIP sweet Angela 💖

I hate the legal system, its really unjust. A Life sentence in Britain is just maybe a long dream not a sentence.

I know this type of character so well I'm 54 and have lived all my life in the area where we always had Angela it's heartbreaking to know she had zero self worth and must of felt so unloved thanks for this case emma you presented it with warmth ❤️

That's such a good point you raised about some people finding prison better than anything that normal life in society offers. There are literally thousands of people who feel like this nowadays, weather its because of homelessness or loneliness it's really sad. I knew a lady like Angie while I was growing up. She lived in the block of flats next to ours. Vanessa her name was, She was a lovely sweet lady just like Angie. She used to give me and my cousin 20p each to "get some penny sweets" but some people on our estate were nasty to her, they'd chuck rubbish at her and call her a piss head or smack head (she didn't even take drugs) once she was stumbling around the street drunk and a young lad shoved her over into the road with an oncoming car, it near ran her over. I heard on Facebook she died about 5yrs ago, her liver gave up on her. People like her and Angie don't deserve to be treated like that 💔
I was in the care system from age 1.5yrs til a day before my 18th so I can fully relate to kids in care getting criminal convictions because they have intense mental health issues and have outbursts. I’m now 28, diagnosed with Autism, attachment disorder, Borderline personality disorder, acute depression with anxiety and PTSD. I wish I had a normal childhood because I doubt I would have suffered with any of these conditions otherwise. Love your content Emma! Keep up the good work xx

Fabulous content as usual! As tragic as all these cases are, the psychology behind them all is absolutely fascinating. Emma, you have a knack of presenting the human side to these monstrous acts. Always thought provoking. Most of these cases, especially in the case of young perpetrators, have something to teach us all. Not that parents carry 100% of the blame 100% of the time, they do shoulder their part of the culpability burden. We as a society should be paying close attention to be able to make the necessary adjustments to try our best to mitigate the destructive circumstances and behaviors affecting our youth. It’s all to easy to label deviants as bad seeds instead of pulling together the possible circumstances and events which shape them. The ol’ nature vs. nature argument is more relevant today than ever.
