Dont forget this is post Vocal Chord surgery. Chino is known for his legendary screams but they ended up causing damage to his vocal chords. He can't scream like he used to
Yeah I think he always had harmful technique, just because he didn’t know better. He always struck me as a guy that gets it out however he can with little regard for how it damages his throat. His screams were pretty solid when I saw them life 5-6 years ago though. He must’ve worked it out.
That explains it. I saw them around 2004-5, and it was an embarrasly bad performance from his part. Probably because of that. Still, he's an awesome singer, pitch perfect on the studio albums.
@Damon Sasser He never really had the best technique anyway. It sounds good, but listen to a song like Hexagram. You could hear how he wasn't really using proper technique.
He has bounced back really well, even recently. I saw Deftones about 2 years ago and his voice was in amazing shape. Hope she gives them another try and maybe something more recent with better mixing.
This is why I love Deftones. You can try to analyze their music via music theory, but the only way to truly understand their music is to just sit back and listen. Music isn't explained, it's felt.
I once asked in a forum how can one listen to deftones without being depressed, cause their music it's all about feeling it to me, not really about great musicianship. Somebody said "what makes a musician great but the ability to make you feel something".
I've always loved the uniqueness of his voice, how it manages to be gentle but powerful, and how its intentionally off-key...how he does that and makes it sound so good is why he's a legend in his genre.
Chino is, in my opinion and many metal fans is the king of screams. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen Deftones live. He can’t scream like he could a few years ago because of vocal cord surgery, but he still kills it live. One of the few heavy bands that can do fast songs and slow songs 🤟🏻
While I agree Deftones are almost purely expressive, I think it's an artifact of your own experience listening to them to just lump them in as 'teenage angsty'. I would say it's more a refusal to fit in quite anywhere specific, to just be who they are and create whatever music they want to
Well teenagers can definitely understand Deftones expressions. ....but Chino is a master of styles and expression. It's for any age bruh. He has a primal but beautiful way about his singing. And it's full of emotion. I'm sure you all love them if your hear watching and commenting so keep it positive metalheads!
Listen to their lyrics. They are very very geared towards pissed off teens and teen woe. They have entire songs about being social outcasts in school. They even have a song called Teenager. It is very teen angst
Its Deftones. They do all styles of music and lyrics. It's for older teens and beyond. There are songs of death and buttsex and much much more for gods sake. It's not Blink 182 or Taylor Swift for teens yay! Dont overanalyze. Its great music imo.
D.M.Turner given that chino writes lyrics entirely randomly, just because things sound cool together for example, I doubt the content of the lyrics really show what you think it shows
@@horuslux8441agreeeed. I think his songs are meaningful lyrics mixed with just random lyrics. He likes to bury meaning among nonsense so no one really knows what hes talking about. I rarely try and examine a deftones song for actual concrete meaning.
Big Deftones fan. This is one of their most oppressively dark songs. Always felt like taking a shower after listening to it. White Pony is a classic, but boy is it a bummer.
Love love love Chino!!! One of my all time fav rock vocalists. The strange flats and sharps he uses and the way everything’s kinda creepy and eerie. I love it.
Brutus - Sugar Dragon (Live in Belgium) This video was just uploaded to UA-cam a few days ago but it's definitely something worth paying attention to. The vocalist for this band plays drums and sings at the same time, and apparently Deftones are fans of them too since Brutus was recently added to a festival put together by them.

Cool one 👍. Deftones is definitely one of my favorite bands from my teenager years. I was also so into them. Chino’s singing is so alternative, melancholic, and full of emotions. First time I heard them immediately their music got my attention. First three albums are such a great alternative metal references. So fresh for their time.
Can Anyone tell me if the def tones did a song with the lyric in "shut up you don't know me squeal like a pig" the only thing i remember plus the mental guitar riff what was the song and album called please
Chino had it way back in 98-01. Most of his perfomances nowadays are terrible. It's sad but it's true. Most of their songs in the studio take me to another dimension though. I love them!
I mean deftones is more a studio band. His studio vocal performances are truly amazing. But the struggling nowadays really live. For years now. But it's okay in a way, there are okay live. Love that Band so much 😅
@@ted__ryan Oh, it's the "Can you do better?"-Move. How is there a bigger form of showing respect than being a fan of this band? And how is criticism a form of disrespect?
Mr Moreno in a more typically brilliant place perhaps : Engine No9 ( Heavy, vitriolic ), My Own Summer ( Deftones Anthem ), Like Linus ( Early Croon )....
I love breath intakes. Carly Rae Jepsen's are noticeable on her Emotion album. Also saw Deftones live a few years ago when they came to South Africa. What a show!
I've seen Deftones a handful of times since '98 and am convinced that Chino is an alien - I didn't know that a human could produce such amazing sounds.
Another rock video means instaclick :), any Silverchair coming up? I feel like they accomplished a ton at such a young age and think the lead singer had a pretty good voice.
Watch the live version of Digital Bath at New Jersey from the year 2000. It's a crappy video but you can see Chino at the top of his game. Flawless. You don't need to react to it, just enjoy it :)
Love Deftones. This takes me back to early High School days! Unfortunately his screams are not what they were before surgery and it loses some of the feeling.
yep, for chino it's all about the emotion and timbre of his voice as an instrument in the mix of the song, to create a feeling and an atmosphere, the technique isn't as important.
I hope you did the studio version or a more clean version cause this song is nuts, is amazing, not a lot people appreciate the fact that this is one of the most creative and adventurous melodies, it defies a lot of standards and it works
Hi! Deftones are my favorite band and Chino is an amazing artist. I'd suggest a different video as a review if you want to go live. Chino's vocals are damaged, sadly, so I'd personally suggest an earlier video. For a more recent one, the video titled "Deftones - Knife Prty (Live at StgoGetsLouder 2015) [Multicam]" is one of my favorites. There is also Passenger, which is sung with Maynard James Keenan from Tool!
The weird sound he did in the end is an inhale scream and he usually cups his mic to emphasize certain frequencies, so it really sounds.. quite animalistic. Love Chino and his expressive vocals, but when it comes to vocal technique, he is pretty much all over the place.
My fave thing about Chino in this era is musically how he mixes up his modes between major/minor/lydian/Dorian etc you can really tell he was hanging out with Maynard at the time. Like Maynard be became a superb mix or musical and expression. Not something you see combined effectively very often.
cam cincott Don't bother, dude. It's become a habit by her or whoever is giving her these horrible suggestions. Tool, Pearl Jam, Chris Cornell, SOAD, and now this, all audio garbage. In one Tool vid she talked about it as if it was live, even though it was the album audio. In another she mentioned the vocal mix, even though it was recorded by some fan on an iphone. Nobody from these bands is trying to sing well at the time. They aren't recorded off the monitor desk or mixed afterwards and then youtube uploading makes them worse.
@@tempsitch5632 its really a shame. i think it would be the reason her channel wouldn't succeed. i requested a band on patreon a few times and then when she did it, it was a terrible, terrible festival version. I'm just a bit salty about that i guess.
The mix is also made for the live concert and not the video! People don't seem to understand that. It the sounds MASSIVELY different when you're there.
Yeah, I saw them live last year at their day of the dead thing in San Diego. They weren't on a national tour, and just had the one date and he sounded great through. Sounds great on the albums. When he tours, he gets worn down for sure.
The forward motion you said was right on, he normally bends down and forward when he’s hitting his higher screams and the vocals are oddly low in this concert, it’s weird 👍🏼💯
Honestly, for it to be a true reaction to Deftones as a band and Chino as a singer/songwriter, I think this is just not enough... there's a lot to listen to
That scream that sounded like a dead horse is an Inhale Scream. Not hard to learn as for me it only took about a week. Chino does this scream a lot live and in quite a few of his songs. Obviously don’t do it too much as it’s inhaling and putting a strain on the cords that you aren’t used to controlling. you can make the screams very high pitched, even higher than falsetto and you can make them very low. It’s a similar thing to pig squeals in certain types of metal. For a good example of this scream chino does, listen to the latter end of the song GORE. This is top secret info. Thank you all very much, *takes bow.😊
You really should be reviewing Chino vocals from before 2001...2003 stuff is great too, but if you want to hear the vocal range he was born with, it should be before he really started damaging his voice...Anything 2006 and beyond will leave you a bit disappointed, if you were hoping to hear him reach that upper vocal range.

Dustin Clark Nah, White Pony is totally sex soundtrack music, lol... Hell, ALL Deftones music is getting laid mix-tape music! 👍
Andrew Carson especially “change”. That’s on my bedroom playlist
Andrew Carson easy there Squirrelly Dan. Lol I’m with you though
Dustin Clark 😂 lol. Right on👍
GypsyRock Hell yeah🤘. Ya gotta interesting eclectic channel with good musical taste, I dig it👍
Should have done digital bath. Also can ur patrons not pick concerts, the mix on this is garbage
Tazz eyy amen
Concerts are uncorrected vocals unlike cds
nay

Lucky i got to see em back in the day. Fan since 90s and adrenaline
Ya Gotta do Digital Bath (album version preferably). And or Passenger (featuring Maynard from Tool). 👍
Bender from Sevendust is awesome also, from the Home Album
Chino is one of the most underrated vocalists in rock. He's so versatile, and I swear he has perfect pitch.
I would love to see a him and mike patton work together, Mike's is one of chinos inspirational singers he grew up loving.

"Sounds like someone's killing a horse!"....The name of this album is White Pony. Coincidence?

I thought this wouldn never happen.

i love watching Beth's reactions when listening to Metal Vocalists. Cuteness overload whenever she gets excited about something. :D
Finally Beth, Deftones!
Love the Deftones, would have preferred Korea or Change in the House of Flies.
Definitely Korea
Korea. Change is too... well known.
Cody Evans yeah when people say change, Minerva or be quiet and drive it makes me cringe! too basic

If only tonight we could sleep is a great live track chino's vocals are on point on that.

IMO, "Bored" is the greatest example of prime Chino vocals.
Chino had it way back in 98-01.
Most of his perfomances nowadays are terrible. It's sad but it's true.
Most of their songs in the studio take me to another dimension though. I love them!

But the struggling nowadays really live.
For years now.
But it's okay in a way, there are okay live.
Love that Band so much 😅
Why don't you try fronting a band for over 30 years and see how people critique you! Show some respect! Lot of bands ripped them off numerous times!
@@ted__ryan Oh, it's the "Can you do better?"-Move.

I agree, you should try "Passenger" (not live, if possible) for you to break apart his range from subtle to loud.
