"...not sure if it sounds like this live..." Yes. Yes it does. Even nearly 30 years after PJ started, Eddie Vedder still sounds just as good. He sounded brilliant even with all his jumping about and climbing in stuff.
Yea man the poor band was like “shit there goes our living and life,” Vedder didn’t have a care in his life at that point and he musta been going through something cuz honestly I get the impression that he didn’t care if he fell and died either lol.
@@zergtoss1 Vedder had a background in surfing, and though it sounds weird, it'd hurt more falliing off a 30 foot wave and hitting the water than hitting hard ground since there's also the wave's forward momentum throwing the surfer forward from the wave. Not bad at all for a guy who literally rose from literal rags to riches, homeless to living on Chris Cornell’s couch in his one bedroom apartment to the amazing legacy of Pearl Jam frontman.
This was the official video, but this is not the studio version track, it’s actually recorded live...the studio track is more polished. Also...Black (unplugged version)...please🙏🏼
@@blacksagelobo That's incorrect. It is a studio recording; it was recorded in-studio at the same time the band recorded the versions of "Breath" and "State of Love and Trust" for the Singles soundtrack. Google around and you'll find various references to this directly from the band members.
Pearl Jam - Black MTV Unplugged version, please. And it's so funny that you describe this intro as aggressive, because Eddie Vedder's famously so gentle, sweet and soft spoken in person. On stage, though, he becomes this force of nature.
It's funny because he was asked one time about how it felt to be on stage with Neil Young and Eddie said it was like being trapped in a cage with a tiger (paraphrase) when he, himself, is as you said a force of nature.

I myself was born in 76 and went through my college years during this era. Even though I love classic rock, metal, and other Genres, I always find myself coming back to this one.
You left out James Hetfeild if you were a teenager in the 90s you can't leave out him and may I say Axel Rose wow two biggest front men of the 90s but I'll let you slide cause your probably a dum dum anyway
I have always enjoyed Pearl Jam's music and Eddie's voice but seeing them live has turned me into a huge fan. It's more than just a concert it's an experience. I think everyone should go see them live at least once in their lives!
Well, are you sitting down? This IS a live track! 😄 They didn't want to mime to the studio version for this. They wanted the video to capture all the energy of the live performance, and I think they succeeded! That's what they were all about back then. Of course there was some editing done afterwards (you can hear some vocal layering in the chorus) but the base track is live, both vocals and instruments. And yeah, I would've loved to have been there as well... Aaaand yes, I am jealous of their hair too. 💗 Yes, please! React to Pearl Jam's Black, MTV Unplugged Version 😁
The same with Alive. I remember the first time seeing and hearing Pearl Jam I was about 16 or 17 years old surfing the channels landed on MTV and came across this video that opened up with ocean waves and then his beautiful guitar introduction next thing I know I see this neanderthal looking man take the mic and began singing something about a mother talking to her son tell him a story about who he thought was his father really wasn't and that is real dad actually died before he had the chance to know the truth. That was the night my life changed forever, and the rest is history... Let's Go Cubbies 2019!!
I've seen PJ live several times. Over the course of 3 decades. He really does pull it off live, his voice and energy, especially in the 90's, was incredible.
Eddie Vedder sang in a way that was totally natural to him. But every hacky 'alternative' singer that came after copied him and created a generic 'alt-rock' style called 'yarling'. It reached its apotheosis with Scott Stapp of Creed.
It really was too bad too. The music of creed was actually pretty good. Tremonti's work on guitar and writing was great, actually. But Stapp just ruins the whole thing.
Eddie has one of the most powerful voices I’ve ever heard. It’s very loud and strong. I’ve seen them live several times and it never wavers. The last time I saw them (believe it or not) was the day Prince died April 20, 2016. It was a bittersweet day, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the place when he was talking about Prince... But that voice was still amazing, and I think he had just turned 51 at the time.
Excellent commentary. It's lovely when someone who knows about the technical side of music gets it (Rick Beato being the obvious example). More power to you.
"their hair is so fabulous, everyone's hair... I'm a bit jealous" ahah true, always wondered how their hair would remain so fluffly during a performance where you no doubt end up drenched in sweat
Carlos Sobarzo that shows probably my favorite. I love the way Layne sings man in the box there. He does a little different thing which I thought was cooler and should have been on the album but they did it differently on the album. That whole show is incredible.
“He’s breaking the microphone omg! They’re expensive” lol she’s adorable but obviously new to rock and hasn’t seen guitar smashing yet ! Thanks for this
This sounds like the single version of Even Flow which is why it's different than the studio version. They used live video, but I don't think the vocal audio is live -- doesn't sound live.
It's live. Especially in the 90's, he was dead on. Alive is also.. live. His cover of Masters of War at the Bob Dylan anniversary show is probably as perfect as Vedder gets. Comparison: ua-cam.com/video/YXdD1G5L17o/v-deo.html
Your react videos are awesome to watch! Especially when you're listening to artists/bands from the era of music I grew up on. I was 12 when Pearl Jam's debut album was released and it brings back so many memories of preteen life. Keep on rocking, Beth!
I love the performance of Once at that gig (in spite of the problems with the bass - in fact it even brings out & helps you hear certain other aspects of the sound).
I just recently came across you and your channel and I have to say you have an unbelievably amazing talent! I really enjoy listening to you effortlessly analyze and communicate to your audience how various famous artists sing the way they do and what makes them who they are. I'm also amazed how you can so accurately and pitch perfectly mimic these great artists with such a powerful and nice voice....wow.
@@vanilla_milkshake It makes for a great story, right? Believe what you want, but I would have thought my comment would spur you to look up the facts for yourself...
This wasn't live. It was a re-recorded version with Dave Abbruzzese. An alternate version of the song was recorded with drummer Dave Abbruzzese in 1992 while the band was recording songs for the soundtrack for the 1992 film, Singles.[5] This version was used for the music video,[6] and was used in single releases in the United Kingdom. This version can also be found on Pearl Jam's 2004 greatest hits album, rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits 1991-2003). Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Even_Flow
I'm a 90s kid as well. Born in 91. By the time I was three years old I loved grunge, and still do to this day. I'd really love it if you reacted to Soundgarden. Chris Cornell is my favorite vocalist. It doesn't matter to me what song or performance you react too. Pretty much anything he did was great.
Not live. It's not the album recording, which is why I think people get confused. It's a different studio recording from a different session with a different drummer.
My bad..pretty sure this was recorded as a band all at one time..with Dave #2 on drums. My personal favorite PJ drummer..right before Dave #1. I like the Dave’s. Also enjoy what Chamberlain did with the drums in the Alive video. Pretty sure I recall reading something about Stone never being happy with the version that was on the album so they did a retake. Pretty sure though that they jammed it out as a band on this recording..not separately recording each track. That’s my bad. I can’t remember what I was thinking when I wrote this..must have been over excitement from the greatness that was laid upon my ears 😜🤙🏻🤘🏻😬
Eddie sounds exactly like Eddie ,be it in studio, at home ,on streets, Antarctic swimming pool , forests , deserts, space or at the live concerts. Nothing less Nothing more. He's known for his aesthetic performances!
Eh, i like PJ as much as anyone, but you cant call him most influential voice, when its beyond obvious how much Layne Staley has influenced him, his mannerisms.
If you really want to hear raw Pearl Jam try one of their 15 live albums, not to mention their official bootleg albums. I personally like Live at Benaroya Hall.
Beth I'm not a singer but I do like playing my guitar and by chance I found you on UA-cam and I think you are just a breath of fresh air.... XOXOXO keep up the good work !!!! 😘

The last time I saw them (believe it or not) was the day Prince died April 20, 2016. It was a bittersweet day, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the place when he was talking about Prince... But that voice was still amazing, and I think he had just turned 51 at the time.
Am I the only one who thinks her intro is the most adorable thing on the planet? Love your videos
No, you are not...and not just the intro..😉
@@mariog2609 True, she is beautiful!
Yup, I'm with you guys.
the *rawr* is cute af, as is she. I've never cared for accents but i actually like hers.
You’re not alone 😄
Just here to leave the obligatory Pearl Jam Black unplugged request
You know it.
Beths hair is so fabulous. I wish i had her hair
Black unplugged by Peal Jam or Jeremy next . Good reaction to Even Flow .
Better both
unthought known
Read this when she said the word "spoken" and suddenly wanted to listen to Jeremy.
Pearl Jam - Black MTV Unplugged. You have to check it out...
React to Alice In Chains - Man In The Box Live At The Moore.
You will love Layne Staley Vocals on this one
love hate love insteaaaad
Love hate love!
Carlos Sobarzo that shows probably my favorite. I love the way Layne sings man in the box there. He does a little different thing which I thought was cooler and should have been on the album but they did it differently on the album. That whole show is incredible.
Love this song and the way he sings it. He makes the feeling of the song. outstanding
Thank you so much for doing this incredible song. Pearl Jam is one of the best bands from the 90s
Seen 'em live. I can confirm a PJ show is worth it still today. So many albums worth of excellent material.
"It's not a TV studio...JOSH!" As a Josh, myself, I felt threatened.
Please do more of their grunge era!
Chris cornell!!!
You should definitely do Chris Cornell and Eddie Vetter singing Hunger Strike. Two of the greatest voices of the 1990s grunge movement.
Don't forget Layne Staley !
Hey! here is my reaction to Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike: ua-cam.com/video/Px21dbt7hb4/v-deo.html
Beth, you need a Pearl Jam week. Pearl Jam has too many great songs, and live performances. Eddie Vedder is a legend, icon, and influence.
“He’s breaking the microphone omg! They’re expensive” lol she’s adorable but obviously new to rock and hasn’t seen guitar smashing yet ! Thanks for this
You can use a Shure SM58 like a hammer then plug it in.
You're right. She should watch some nirvana :D
Don't show her John Otway doing Headbutts then!
Guitar smashing? Pete Townshend anyone?
Check out my reaction to The Who here: ua-cam.com/video/LqVTgFlqekA/v-deo.html
This is an real live recording i think, the studio version sounds different.
I know for one of their music videos they decided to record the vocals live and not lipsync.
I don't know if it was Even Flow or Alive.
Yeah this is all live. For Jeremy they did vocals only live, but this is full band live.
Excellent review Beth!
This sounds like the single version of Even Flow which is why it's different than the studio version. They used live video, but I don't think the vocal audio is live -- doesn't sound live.
This was rerecorded in early 1992 with Dave Abbruzzese on drums, not Dave Krusen. Same session as Breathe and State of Love and Trust I think?
It's live.
Especially in the 90's, he was dead on.
Alive is also.. live.
His cover of Masters of War at the Bob Dylan anniversary show is probably as perfect as Vedder gets.

Black (Live) - MTV Unplugged - Pearl Jam
Your react videos are awesome to watch! Especially when you're listening to artists/bands from the era of music I grew up on. I was 12 when Pearl Jam's debut album was released and it brings back so many memories of preteen life. Keep on rocking, Beth!
Ive seen pearl jam twice in concert and they always keep studio level quality with their music
If you want to see more live energy check out their Pinkpop 92 show. One of the best rock shows ever.
I love the performance of Once at that gig (in spite of the problems with the bass - in fact it even brings out & helps you hear certain other aspects of the sound).
Oh yes, Black unplugged, for sure, an astounding song. Needs to be done!
React to Pearl Jam - Black (Unplugged version)
I just recently came across you and your channel and I have to say you have an unbelievably amazing talent! I really enjoy listening to you effortlessly analyze and communicate to your audience how various famous artists sing the way they do and what makes them who they are. I'm also amazed how you can so accurately and pitch perfectly mimic these great artists with such a powerful and nice voice....wow.
Eddie Veddar always sings with Raw emotion and passion, one of the greatest Rock Vocalists of all time. absolute legend!
You need to react to Cemetery Gates by Pantera, those are really good vocals!
Yes
Hell yeah brother!
Yes!
As others have said. PJ - Black MTV Unplugged will blow your mind.
I'll just go with the flow here... MTV unplugged version of Black
this is NOT a studio recording. this is the actual live performance audio.
Sorry - this is a myth.
@@whythatspreposterous no... this is live
@@vanilla_milkshake It makes for a great story, right? Believe what you want, but I would have thought my comment would spur you to look up the facts for yourself...
This is a live studio recording. It’s not live in concert. Sorry....
This version can also be found on Pearl Jam's 2004 greatest hits album, rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits 1991-2003).

that chorus gives me chills every time
As everybody said Black unplugged. He uses a lot of vibrato on that song
I don't know if anyone told you this but you should react to pearl jam - Black (unplugged version)
‘Jeremy’ would have been a good pearl jam song to react to 😀
Spending lockdown watching these videos love to see anyone's enthusiasm for music
She totally gets the brilliance of Eddie!! Thank you!!! Love this.....
PJ Black - PJ Black - PJ Black - MTV Unplugged Please :)
React to pearl Jam - Black (unplugged version))
I'm a 90s kid as well. Born in 91. By the time I was three years old I loved grunge, and still do to this day. I'd really love it if you reacted to Soundgarden. Chris Cornell is my favorite vocalist. It doesn't matter to me what song or performance you react too. Pretty much anything he did was great.
I was born in 1980 and I consider myself a 90s kid.
It’s Eddie Vedder. He’s always full of energy. And yes. He’s an amazing vocalist.
He does sound exactly like that live, I saw them so many times, he's absolutely incredible
Pearl Jam is actually very good live. Saw them live about what seems a hundred years ago, 1991.
I do believe, consensus is callin' for a certain color sans the plug, lassy.
Tis not a colour, sir!! Tis but a shaaaaaaaaaaade :D
Black unplugged plz and thx
one of my favorite react video in youtube ! find myself coming back every few months
This is in fact a live recording..they’re just really really good live..even now nearly 30 years later🤘🏻😬🖖🏻
No it's not. It's a remastered studio version
Pearl jam - Black MTV Unplugged please! You're gonna love it!
React to SoundGarden beyond the wheel live in Germany 1990!
This is the correct answer
Eddie sounds exactly like Eddie ,be it in studio, at home ,on streets, Antarctic swimming pool , forests , deserts, space or at the live concerts. Nothing less Nothing more. He's known for his aesthetic performances!
Unplugged a MUST...! His voice...no words...
Hello, if you want to really enjoy a live performance I recommend their full set in Pinkpop 92- Pearl Jam
Hell yeah, that's when PJ was at their most intense!!!!
I truly loooove the pinkpop '92 performance! So f*ckin' intensive. Wish I was there...
Yeah i was there too, still my favorite so many years and concerts later.
Exactly one of my favorite Pearl Jam concerts Pinkpop 1992 oohhh my goodness ❤️🤘✌️
Release me by Pearl Jam. That will blow you away. Guaranteed
Yes!
Absolutely
Yep theres a live version from 1992 on youtube thats fucking amazing
Release at Fenway this year was insane. Have you seen the footage from outside the stadium? 😯

Gotta do Pearl Jam-Black MTV Unplugged
Pearl Jam- Black (Unplugged)
Nirvana - Where did you sleep last night (unplugged)
PLEASE.
This right here!
Yes! Best live performance ive heard in my entire life.. that voice, omg that voice!
Wow. That's an incredible performance. Yes!
That whole Nirvana Unplugged show...
Omg, yes!! I was thinking of Pink right before you mentioned her! The live performance specifically of when she sang "Try." 👍🏻💚
Pearl jam black unplugged or eddie vedders solo stuff. All fantastic!
Yes! Please react to Black (unplugged)!
React to Living Colour - Cult Of Personality, please!
Its only now that i subscribe but i can’t stop watching your vids. Love the way you analyz and break down the vocal.
I saw them live in Vancouver before they really took off. Best live performance I've seen, ever!
Eddie Vedder is the most influential voice of the last 30 years in Rock. Pearl Jam is arguably the greatest band this country has ever produced
Eh, i like PJ as much as anyone, but you cant call him most influential voice, when its beyond obvious how much Layne Staley has influenced him, his mannerisms.
Alice In Chains-Love hate love, Live at The Moore, please!
Unreal vocals from Layne
If you really want to hear raw Pearl Jam try one of their 15 live albums, not to mention their official bootleg albums. I personally like Live at Benaroya Hall.
he sounds just like this live. one of the best live singers ever
Beth I'm not a singer but I do like playing my guitar and by chance I found you on UA-cam and I think you are just a breath of fresh air.... XOXOXO keep up the good work !!!! 😘
And I was at that show!! Seattle Keeping Rock Alive! 🤘🏽🔥💚
