One of the things that initially drew me into the band is that Maynard treats himself as an instrument, usually in the shadows off to the side. There was an interview where one of them was talking about usually leaving center stage empty and lit with a spotlight and letting the music take center stage.

Maynard has said there are concerts he'll choose to do the more demanding vocals, like this one, and take it easy on the following ones. If you find this live, he can actually hold that scream around 20 seconds and sometimes longer. They tend to sound nearly studio quality live, which is pretty amazing. Also, most of the strange sounds come from Danny Carey's drum kit, where he's got a whole host of percussion instruments, but also sounds keyed up on electronic pads. His kit is massive. And he also doesn't play with a click in his ear. The timing comes natural to him. He's a freak of nature when it comes to drumming.

All the references to Saturn are talking about what in astrology is called the "Saturn return." Saturn's orbit takes about 29 years to return to the location it was at at the time of your birth. When it returns to this point it's often thought to be a point of major changes or challenges in a person's life. Saturn as a planet can be thought of as (very simply) representing "hard lessons" so this is like saying, Saturn is coming around, and is gonna make you deal with this shit one way or another.
EDIT: Additionally the lines "lift you up like a child", "drag you down like a stone", "consume you", "spits you out like a child" are all referencing the mythology behind Saturn, or more specifically the Greek god Kronos, who ate his own children in fear they would rise up and overthrow him, as he had to do to his own father. He was tricked into eating a stone instead of his son Zeus, and later was poisoned by Zeus forcing him to spit back out all the ones previously eaten.
EDIT 2: More info from "Micah Shellhamer" in comments below! Well there is the Saturn Return but he's also referencing alchemy. Saturn in alchemy refers to lead, like a lead weight, and at the end when he says give the stone away and let the water change and trans-mutate these leaden grudges into gold. Also he's referencing it when he says choose 1 or 10. Gold in alchemy is represented by the number 1 and the sun. Lead is 10 and Saturn. This video by max derrat explains it much clearer and the rest of the songs meanings on Lateralus. ua-cam.com/video/Nqe29gs8l8M/v-deo.html

Not to mention that any trace of disillusionment in Maynard's mind has played itself out and his soliloquy is a testament of his own character in full self-judgement of his unworthiness of his mother's concern about his mindset and not her own as she lay dying for 30 years. Until the point where she was no longer lucid, we didn't hear much about her from this band. But A Perfect Circle is a different story, with a different cast. Letting his Mom go was probably the hardest and most loving thing he ever had to contemplate and follow through with.

Ever critical of the church and skeptical of Christianity, and yet he pleads with a god he doesn't believe in on his mother's behalf - if there is a heaven, and such a thing as earning your place there, surely she must have done so with her selfless love? "I don't believe in you, but if you're real, let her in you bastards!" A love that transcended their differences in faith - in both directions.

Undertow is one of the best rock albums ever recorded and I think will stand the test of time. The title track is one of the most emotional, deep, heavy rock songs I've ever heard but the whole album is just a master class. Their sound got a little more refined after that but you still get inklings of it in their later work. The bridge between the raw sound of "Opiate" and the complexity of "Lateralus".

Saturn comes back around is referring to the planet Saturns rough orbit of 29 years to circle the sun. In Astrology it is a sign of change and the lyric is “Saturn comes back around to show you everything, Let’s you choose what you will not see you then, drags you down like a stone or lift you up again, spit you out like a child light and innocent.” Meaning let go of the Grudge that’s holding you back, if you don’t it will by an actor holding you back from living your life fully.

Christina, I really enjoyed your reaction. It's very gratifying when someone that is not from 'this world' gets tool. In addition, you were able to add a few new (to me, at least) insights into one of the most studied rock bands in history, so kudos.
I feel like singers, when they discover tool (and its rabid fan base), want to do more reaction videos, but are also worried about doing too many Tool songs. Please allow me to allay that fear - you can do as many Tool songs as you like and we will continue to love them.
Finally, one piece of constructive criticism - you do a great job of choosing when to pause the video. You sense that you are about to loose a musical moment and pause it appropriately. However, often that change will be to a powerful moment. The absolute worst thing you could do (which you don't do) is to pause right on the downbeat of the change. But, even pausing before it, you loose some of the impact of the change that we, as fans who know the song, look forward to. So, this is all a long way of saying, keep pausing exactly like you are, but before you resume the music, hit the left arrow and jump back 5 seconds, and THEN resume the music. Just make it a habit.
Anyway, look forward to more 🙂

That sound was Adam on a foot petal synth. The scream was 29 seconds on purpose to go along with the reference to Saturn’s orbital period. Maynard is very clever with his lyrics throughout their whole catalog. I enjoy your reactions/ analysis. I subbed for the Tool. Keep them coming. You won’t be disappointed.

I'd love to see your take on parabol/parabola, but to be honest, the whole lateralus album in particular is something special. Seeing it as an opera with different movements is something I'd never thought of, but actually makes sense. If you listen to the the holy trinity (disposition/reflection/triad) I think you'll really get that sense. Great analysis, youve made me look at the album a different way, and ive listened to it for a good 20 years now 😂

Loved your reaction. Thank you. At the beginning you mentioned a voice in the background. I’d never heard that before in this song. It actually sounded like the cameraman. Lol. It did make me think of one of my favourites from Tool, 46 & 2 where Maynard actually talks/sings way low in volume in two sections of the song. The song itself is very deep in meaning using Carl Jung’s theory of the shadow plus the thought of 2 extra chromosomes added to our regular 44 & 2.

I always find Maynard's vocals to be at most right in line with the instruments, if not a little lower. I saw them live last year and often times I could barely hear him. And I think it's very deliberate since you can also barely see Maynard a lot of the time. He's always positioned back and off to the side. I've seen Tool live several times in the past few decades, and every time I have seen them, Maynard has been in the BACK of the stage. Sometimes you can't even see him, but you can very much see the rest of the band. I really think you described it best, in that the band considers the vocals, to be another instrument: no more important than anyone else on stage.

Would you please review two songs from Tool that go together (Wings for Marie and 10,000 days (Wings for Marie Part 2)) that deal with the passing of Maynard's mother Judith Marie. Those songs have everything: emotion, deep meaning, incredible lyrics, spectacular delivery, etc. The emotion Maynard conveys in the lyrics and in the way that he delivers them brings grown men to tears. I would truly love to hear your reaction to them. It's the ultimate tribute from a child to their mother. It's best to know some of the context beforehand, like what 10,000 days means. Also, pay attention to the difference in how he deals with the grief between the two songs. The first song is somber and centered around how he is handling it "its time for us to let you go". While the second song is a celebration of her life where his tone lifts and builds throughout the song ending with (from his mother's perspective speaking to God) "is time for you to bring me home". His mother was highly religious and Maynard was not, but he gets her faith in the end. Maybe the most powerful lines I have ever heard in a song are:
"Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance
Burden of proof tossed upon non-believers
    You were my witness
    My eyes, my evidence
    Judith Marie, unconditional one"
He's saying he always needed proof and she only ever needed faith, but in the end her faith was his proof. She was his "eyes" his "evidence". POWERFUL!!!

Can confirm... Have heard the song hundreds of times.. I can't ever sing along or get to 'the part' without choking up and trying to stop a tear. In fact I always fail, I always lose one. It just comes screaming out of you.
If every man had a mother they loved that they could write a song for, they would write this song 6 days a week and twice on Sunday. If every man wanted to rent a mansion for a week for their mother, Maynard built the mansion single handedly with rocks and sticks, and it took him nearly 10,000 days to do it.

Many of their songs have deeper levels that you can't get from a casual listen. That's not to say that they aren't good for the casual listener. First of all great look at the lyrics. For a first time you caught a lot. The scarlet letter is indeed in reference to the punishment of branding people with their sin. Someone has hurt the character and they hold this up as a part of themselves. It's a defining characteristic.
Saturns return I never fully remember. But it has to do with Saturns year being equivalent to 27 or so years and that it's seen as an important cycle of a human life.
Something missed is that MJK likens the grudge to lead. Lead historically is said to be to heavy and soft to be useful. But a theory around alchemy circles was that if you found the right formula it could be transmutated into gold. MJK is saying that if we throw our leaden grudge away and expect nothing back (closure, vindication... A medal) we can transmute it into a golden life lesson.
I love that this song isn't really the end of the journey with this grudge. The abrupt end doesn't really feel like closure but the song (first track on Lateralus) is the beginning of the healing process
Very well done with the reaction. The observation of the singing through gritted teeth was great
For the next song you may as well just go to the beginning of their first EP.... We'll all watch it. If that's not what you want to do "H.", "Forty Six and 2", "Parabol/Parabola" and "Right in Two" are all stunning choices

Needless to say, it was amazing. And trip on this- I always just assumed that the songs were built around the lyrics because they go with the music dynamics so perfectly. The song is composed almost entirely of phrases of 5/8 or 5/4, depending on how you count it (aside from a few sections of various time signatures over 8).
