- As the eldest granddaughter of a family with both Romany gypsy and Irish traveller heritage 15 year old Santana is expected to follow strict rules for girls and set a good example for her younger family members.
No longer at school she spends a lot of her time cleaning the family chalet with the occasional visit from a teacher for home schooling.
About to turn 16 she is planning a lavish sweet 16th birthday party - complete with a dress made by Thelma and a fifteen tier cake decorated with fireworks. Santana has got a lot to celebrate. Proud Grandma Bridie - the current family matriarch - explains that turning 16 means Santana will be allowed a bit more freedom and is trusted to be let off her cleaning duties for a few more hours a week.

I am proud of Angel for choosing to stay in school! She will be more educated and advance further in life than the other children.
Well let’s hope she learns to stop saying the N word
Same
Correction, she will be infinitely more educated than the rest of the traveller population who are illiterate and greatest achievement isn't picking science over arts but just picking their nose.

anyone else wonder why Mary has a bedazzled pacifier at 8 yrs old?
I think Mary is mentally delayed, if you watch closely the girls around her even the girls younger than her are taking care of her and acting almost like extra parents towards her. I think it’s a really interesting example of the pack mentality that seem to have on these traveler sites. They work together to take care of everyone. I’ve watched a lot of these episodes trying to learn more about them to be able to understand them and in every other video I’ve watched girls younger than Mary are already cleaning by themselves, taking care of younger siblings and cooking for their families but Mary’s younger siblings are taking care of her.
I thought it was just me 😩
@@LydiaSue I agree I've worked with children with different issues over the years but when this was originally broadcast I wasn't sure if the lisp she has was due to mentality delay or from over use of the pacifier xxxx

They embarrass & shame travellers who choose to go to school. Disgraceful for parents to promote that behaviour
Once upon a time they had their own segregated schools run by the religious orders. That was fine and everyone was happy. Then travellers decided they wanted mainstream education and they found they couldn't keep up. They were lazy and disrupted the class. Now they want their own segregated schools again but the religious orders are gone .....
That's all the mum's know, sadly.
Some of their mindsets are wild. How is a boy wanting to clean up mean he's gay 🤔

@@kells8015 🤣🤣🤣
@@kells8015 please, enlighten me!
The way they talk about and view women is so heart breaking
As someone of Roma gypsy decent I can honestly tell you sweet 16’s really are this big of deal. I didn’t want one & my family was SHOOK. Lol.
How accurate is this show? Are the gender roles really this strict? Basically, what does the show get wrong and right?
@@dragonflyinamber
The show is very accurate.
One thing that is unusual in this episode, is the girl that stayed in school until her prom.
That's very unusual in the Irish traveller culture. In Ireland, Irish traveller girls will have left school by 12 yrs of age.
They will usually be married at 17/18 yrs old. If an Irish traveller girl was to get to 22/23 yrs old and be unmarried, it is usually because of accusations, that she has been scandalised. This means that she would be seen as dirty within her community.
This is the main reason "grabbing" never happens in Ireland. If a boy was to "grab" a girl in Ireland, and push her across the street, or around the corner, the boy, or his family, or indeed other traveller family, with a grudge towards the girls family, could make an accusation about the girl, ie that she let the boy do more than just have a kiss etc.
The whole reason girls are taken out of school at 12, and not allowed any freedom until she marries, is to her reputation is 100% clean. And it continues after she gets married, with her husband taking over the control from her parents.
And again this is to ensure no one can make an accusation about her throughout her marriage. She will never go anywhere unaccompanied, and never to any social event with out her husband.
Accusations about the cleanness of a travelling girl/woman can lead to bitter feuding, that can last years.
@@dragonflyinamber yes it is very accurate
Shocked
@@dragonflyinamber it’s honestly extremely real unfortunately. We see raised to be “pretty” & find a gypsy man to take car of us. School is really not a priority at ALL. Finding a man is the main goal. When I was 14 my great aunt tried to get me to date my like 2nd cousin? I think he was my 2nd cousin I could be wrong…but none the less he was my cousin. But it’s HUUUUGE in gypsy culture to marry within the family to keep “blood line pure” I do not agree with this at all! I was like “ummmm no thanks lol.” I respect my culture & I still hold some traditional values…but I’m a more Americanized gypsy…I work, I’m in school to be a nurse & I am marrying a gorger (non-gypsy) & I am 100% okay with that. I honestly don’t like other gypsies because my people a lot of the time are really ignorant.
I understand it's their culture but how sad that the girls, in this case Santana, will have to go their entire lives under the rules of another never getting to fully make their own decisions. From the time she was born until she's married, she's under the strict and watchful eye of her parents. Then when she gets married, around 16 or 17 usually, she'll be under the rules of her husband. It seems to me that she'll never fully be able to discover herself and what she likes, doesn't like, wants or doesn't want. It's all dictated by someone else. But nevertheless I hope she's happy wherever she is. She seems incredibly sweet.
This programme is so toxic. They show such a small minority of the traveller population and the rest of society thinks this is the norm. Completely incorrect
There was also an American version of My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. It was also problematic.
I was friend with a Romani gypsy, back in Sweden, but she didn't have those rules, nor did anyone else in her family or her kids. They lived in a flat like anyone else
I’m sure this would class as child abuse. Not finishing school and working for dad, it’s not 1822. Can’t read, it’s almost as though by keeping the children dumb they keep control of them .
Exactly
So sad to see these young girls and boys never realize their potentials. For their families to allow this is abusive!
What makes you think they have potential?
@@anthonyhassett anyone does
@@aminawarsame00 Not everyone has potential. Ask any child psychologist nature Vs nurture. Most of these girls have no potential. This is due to low levels of literacy, low expectations, juvenile records, poor school attendance, education not supported in the home..... Loads of reasons.
@@anthonyhassett again those things can’t hold back anyone. People can overcome their struggles

Angel is now a TV star. Good for her, and good for Cassa! Hoping that Alice has a good life, but doubtful. Got to add that all of the traveller girls have such beautiful hair~

Glad I can enjoy my Sunday afternoon with another episode of this
Me too lol 😮😊😊
Santana is so pretty! She definitely deserves her party, as she said she works very hard for what she wants!
Did they say 69 grandchildren and 49 great grandchildren?!
Yes
It’s not far off. My great grandparents had 13 children, 46 grandchildren and who knows how many great grandchildren
They start having babies probably at 16 or so …I think
I want to know how many kids the grandmother had.
On the downside travellers don't live to be old most are gone before 60.
The outfits these women and girls wear to church 😯
My teacher friend told me that gypsies won't go to school unless a taxi is sent for them. She teaches them. They don't pay taxes but they use taxis which are paid for out of taxes, ours!
I am grateful for many things. Not being born a traveler is one of them.
I know they don't let the girls go to school but you think they could teach them not to run into traffic. That girl is lucky to still be alive.

England just changed the law - no marriage at 16 any more - must be 18. (applies from about Feb 2023). Scotland and I believe Northern Ireland is still 16 however so they won't have to go far.

It’s their version of courting apparently and they literally call it ‘grabbing’ you can see it on other episodes and I saw one where the end of the girls wedding get friend got ‘grabbed’ and kissed talking about it being wrong and gross and then a few episodes later was that same girl marrying the guy that ‘grabbed’ her at her friends wedding

As someone who spent many years employed in mainstream education, I can guarantee that a HUGE amount of time, effort and resources go into trying to educate children, the likes of 'Micky', when it would be better spent on children who are regular attenders and who might need additional support. Each time'Micky' decides he's going to make an appearance, staff will find they're back to square one in planning lessons he can access...... and that's if he can be bothered. His blase attitude, alone , will be difficult to overcome. I know . I've been in that position and, however committed you are, it's extremely frustrating.
They honestly have a pretty good point about the school thing to some extent. I just wish public primary schools focused more on realistic skills. That and properly explaining how and when you would use certain things in math cause sometimes I’m doing something and encounter a problem I know could be solved by math but not sure what kind of math I’d use for it.
