An often overlooked survival skill is crafting baskets and cordage. Both these skills are extremely important for primitive life in the wilderness. Cordage is easy to make and can conveniently be stored or carried but its application is of immense value. Cordage can be used to build shelters, make sandals, sew clothes, make bags and blankets and so many other uses. Baskets are very important for collecting and storing food and other materials. Summer is the harvest time for mesquite pods. This highly nutritional and tasty food is very abundant and can be safely stored for a long time making it a terrific survival food. In this video I use materials available to me in my immediate area to make a useful burden basket to collect and transport the mesquite harvest. This series will be ongoing so be sure to stay tuned for the next video.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Who films you?
Me. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything, all alone. On a few occasions I may be accompanied by a friend.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share locations.
Where did you get your sandals?
I first started wearing sandals on outdoor adventures in February 2014. I’m so glad that I did because wearing these Luna Sandals has really helped strengthen my feet. You can see their selection of adventure and running sandals at this link: www.lunasandals.com/?rfsn=102...
(Note: I receive an affiliate commission from any sales derived from clicking on the link above)
Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently to collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work well and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.
How many languages do you speak?
My first language is English but I also speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I also speak very little Russian. I may soon begin learning more languages.
How old are you?
I was born in 1972. At the time of this video I was 48.
Where did you get the music in your videos?
This series is the first one that I am making all the music myself. I recently made a drum and maracas (rumba shaker). I am now using them to create the intro and ending music in my videos, but before in the past I have used royalty free music from several sources including UA-cam. Sometimes I bought the music but usually it was free. - Навчання та стиль

2. I did not know Mesquite gave food.

@@slyfox._.5782 I honestly do learn something every day. In 64 years, that's a whole bunch of learning! 👍
Many people don't know about the many edible foods in the wild. I'm still learning new ones.
@@ChadZuberAdventures I am learning too. I was delighted to learn about wild foods growing in my own back yard. Dandelion ( I made Dandelion salad and Dandelion "honey" that I canned.
False Dandelion aka Hawksbeard. Just like Dandelion. White and pink clover. Violets and their leaves, Plantain, aka Wild Sorrel. Wild scallions. What a gift from God!
@@lindaseel8633 Yes! In California I've collected a lot of greens in the springtime. Plantain is a great medicinal herb. Bitter to eat but definitely really good for you.

Agreed 😁😁🙏
I usually hate youtubers advertising their sponsors…but this guy makes an effort. Just another reason why he’s awesome
I’ve always been wanting to see some bloopers, or behind the scenes footage of this series. I wonder if there’s ever been something just out of the ordinary that you’ve never seen before, or something funny happens while out wandering
Hmmm, I can't think of anything worth considering a blooper. I guess I'm getting better at filming.
What a chad response
@@ChadZuberAdventures the Bow and Arrow 🏹 episode with Buddy was a funny one 😆
You can trap fish with those wicker baskets, in Indonesia many people trap fish with such wicker baskets
Yeah, the natives here made traps a similar way.
I thought you made the basket to trap fish, but it turns out the basket is for harvesting mesquite
Loved the advert for curiosity stream - still chuckling now
Hahhaa! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
glad to see sponsors supporting you!
Thank you!
Me binge watching these vids: Instead of making a grilled sandwich, I made a paleo salad + 2 boiled eggs and a handful of nuts = Still hungry. My body does not like me, I think. Love watching this, better than any 'survival stuff' you see these days on the TV. You do inspire to at least try to live a bit healthier!

That plant you couldn't identify at 8:47 was salt cedar. A invasive species from Africa. They increase the salt content of the ground around them so other plants can't grow.
Yes! I just learned that today. Thank you so much. I'm going to look for a way to use them and start cutting them down.
@@ChadZuberAdventures The good thing about invasives is that you don't feel as bad for harvesting them

I really liked the quote by George Lois
Nice. I thought it was interesting.
I get so excited when I get a notification on my smart phone, at my desk job, at a tech company, in the middle of a soul crushing program review meeting that there is a new Primal Tendencies episode out! I have nothing but respect for you Chad and love learning about how I am going to survive once I get the balls to quit my job, leave this burning Babylon, and head out to the bush!
I did have a couple questions if you are interested in answering, if not.. no worries!
- Do you brush your teeth out there?
- When you return to civilization in between expeditions, is it unbearable to see all the overconsumption, consumerism and technological heathenism controlling all our lives?
- Who watches your pup when you are out in the wild? (maybe too personal idk...)
Keep up this amazing channel, it brings me great comfort and reminds me that the best things in life are the simplest.
Thanks so much! Get plenty of practice before quitting your job though. It takes time to learn these skills.
No, I usually don't brush my teeth out here but I do floss with strands of my hair or yucca fibers. Sometimes I even brush with a wad of yucca fibers.
Yes! I do get a little sickened by the sight of all the obesity, over consumption, drug and alcohol use, and heavy dependency on technological little gadgets and conveniences that are shipped here from all over the world. And then when I imagine what the cityscape looked like before the asphalt and concrete was laid over the land.
Rufo stays with my family when I'm gone. Lately it's been difficult because they were on vacation and I had to watch him.
@@ChadZuberAdventures Thanks for the thoughtfully crafted response! I hope that rabbit foot does its job for you in the coming weeks out there. I am really excited to see you start catching fish with a basket trap and REALLY pumped to see the shelter your new bricks craft.

Another fantastic episode, tremendously impressive content!
Been watching you for almost 2 years now chad. This is some great educational content and in some situations can be 100% life saving. Cant wait to see the hut when it's done.
Thanks a lot. I can't wait to finish the hut too.
Taste the leaves on that shrub if it's salty it's a salt cedar tree very young. Salt cedar is not native and is invasive. It will destroy the ground around it and water. The Salt cedar are prevalent in West Arizona and along the Colorado River.
Just today I learned that it is salt cedar. I read about them and it is sad to see the destruction they bring. Now I understand why there are hardly any other plants growing in the area. The earth is too salty. I'm going to see if the branches will work for light construction projects and start cutting them down.
Gracias Chad buen episodio.
I believe that plant is a salt cedar also called tamarisk.
Thank you so much! I just looked it up. That's exactly what it is.
@@ChadZuberAdventures they grow like crazy along the rivers here in south east New Mexico. Star Land management constantly has teams of equipment removing them because the consume so much water and damage the soil for natural vegetation to grow.

You should use that basket to catch fish. Put the bait in there and wait for the fish to come in.
This basket probably won't work well for fishing but I'm going to make a better basket specifically for fishing.

Yes, thank you!
Hey man so i was thinking you know how you made the acorn bars , why not try to make the mesquite into something like that? Just only a little thicker for more nutrients?
Yes that can be done. The beans are ground down to make flour. The beans are very tasty. I would not suggest picking up off the ground as the beans can get mold and insects love them. Better off the tree. Here is an interesting fact the sap can ruin metal it is acidic.
I wish it were as easy as using acorns. I have tried grinding down mesquite pods to make flour and it is very difficult. I'm going to continue experimenting but so far I have found them best to just chew on and extract the pulp directly or pounding them on a rock and mixing with water and drinking the water. It's really good that way. When acorn season returns then I hope to be able to mix both flours together to make delicious and nutritious bars.
@@ChadZuberAdventures i know a few people who roast the mesquite pods and make "coffee" with it. It is on my bucket list of things to try.
@@grannyLynnsCreations I have pounded the pods both fresh and roasted and then soak them in water for a few hours. It makes a really delicious beverage that I enjoy.
@@ChadZuberAdventures I have been successful in making flour with mesquite but only if I toast them on a hot rock first, then they grind down easier for me
