Building Adobe Rocket Mass Heater and Firing Pottery (episode 29)

  • Construction of this primitive adobe Hut continues as I focus my efforts on building a rocket mass heater that will keep me warm on cold winter nights. I am building the heater in such a way that it will hopefully have a lot of thermal mass that will hold heat for many hours. Also in this video I fire some new clay bowls and a torch that can be used to burn pine pitch for light at night. This series will be ongoing so be sure to stay tuned for the next video.

    FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
    Who films you?
Me. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything, all alone. On a few occasions I may be accompanied by a friend, but that has been very rare.
Do you stay out there permanently?
No, I usually stay out in a wilderness area for about a week and then hike out and return to a city for editing and uploading. I have family and other obligations to take care of as well.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
    Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share locations.
Where did you get your sandals?
I first started wearing sandals on outdoor adventures in February 2014. I’m so glad that I did because wearing these Luna Sandals has really helped strengthen my feet. You can see their selection of adventure and running sandals at this link: www.lunasandals.com/?rfsn=102...
(Note: I receive an affiliate commission from any sales derived from clicking on the link above)
    Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently to collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
    Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work well and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.
How many languages do you speak?
My first language is English but I also speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I also speak very little Russian. I may soon begin learning more languages.
    How old are you?
I was born in 1972. At the time of this video I was 49.
Where did you get the music in your videos?
This series is the first one that I am making all the music myself. I recently made a drum and maracas (rumba shaker). I am now using them to create the intro and ending music in my videos, but before in the past I have used royalty free music from several sources including UA-cam. Sometimes I bought the music but usually it was free.

Rewatching this series, I am once again very much in favor of ASMR videos of these various quiet, speech-free moments. The crunching and crackling of palo verde bean pods, the slick scraping of water being smoothed over bricks, the thumping of fist edges pounding the bricks into the mud mortar and that peculiar hollow ringing they have when they're solidly made and thoroughly dried when pounded... The scraping and gouging of digging tools, the smacking of hands on wet adobe mud, the treading of footsteps along a winding wilderness path, the high-pitched chirps of grasshoppers, cicadas, and crickets, and the babbling of the creek where the fish (at least, so far) continue to elude our doggedly determined hero... Even the sound of the wind blowing through the brush, mixed in with these other things, can be a soothing auditory experience. Plus, it's helping me make progress on my crocheting, lol...

Once again, fascinating and amazing work. How much satisfaction that must give, building something with your very own hands that rewards you with shelter, comfort and heat. Something that is absent in modern western society but what is so crucial to our reptile brain. I am convinced we take ourselves too serious and overthink everything in modern day society. ANyhow, keep it up and enjoy!

I totally agree with you! Many times I've been criticized for not building or making something the "right way" but I have found that it's not necessary at all in most cases. I'm not measuring anything here. Nor did I measure anything at my previous hut and it all worked and still works. When we think things too much we make it all too complicated. I didn't plan out all of this from the beginning. I've been adapting the design as I get new ideas along the way. This really makes the process a joy and to see it coming together so well is really so satisfying.

IMHO you may find that you are "temporarily storing" handy rocks in your bench. I suspect that individual rocks may soon be more valuable in other ways than as indirect thermal mass. Keep up the outstanding work. BTW: The estimates of work-accomplished-per-hour (bricks laid, pods gathered, water consumed) are PARTICULARLY interesting, and much appreciated when you put them in. Cheers

Wow, the new hut is rally coming along. You have done so much work since the last update. You can tell that a lot of thought and calculations went into this new hut. This is truly a handcrafted home. It is so well built. The rocket mass heater is a fantastic idea. I had not heard of these before, and the idea it great. Not only do you get the heat from the fireplace itself, but also heat from the exhaust. This will give out more warmth, along with having a heated place to sit. Really impressed with this. I didn’t know exactly what you were building at first. I think it was a good idea with the stones. It should help hold heat.
I am also impressed with the new pottery. You have grown so much in your pottery making ability. Some of the pieces look like they were thrown on a wheel. Having two cooking pots will really come in handy. The pitcher and plate were fabulous. So well done.
I too, am looking forward to seeing the hut completed. It will be wonderful to
see exactly what you have envisioned , I know it is already looking better than anything I might have thought possible with having basically no real tools, except your own hands and some found implements to help. Truly amazing. This is such a well crafted hut !

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  2 роки тому

Thanks a lot! Yes, I am really happy how this is turning out. It really is more than I even imagined I would do here. When I cam to this place I really didn't know what kind of hut I would build and it took some time and experimentation with materials to really know what is possible. Some people criticized me for taking so long but I really needed to get to know the land, weather and resources. By doing so and testing things out with simpler shelters I learned what was possible. The pottery has impressed me too. The clay I used to make pottery at the old hut had a tendency to crack easily during the drying process but this clay contains a perfect combination of naturally occurring minerals in it and it doesn't crack and is easy to work with. I will be making much better pieces as time goes on.

    • @molliejonte2732
      @molliejonte2732 2 роки тому

@@ChadZuberAdventures , I think a really big mistake a lot of people make is not getting to know their land before really changing things. On top of that, you were going to be building a place to live that would last and not break down quickly. You had a whole another factor to consider. I see people buy land and then going and making changes or putting their building where they then regretted putting them. It is always important to get to know the land before changing things. That creates a lot less mistakes that can’t be easily changed. I am glad you waited till you were ready. Also, creating the building materials is a whole other issue. You have had to make the bricks, one by one, which were made by the clay you hand dug from the hard ground. Not an easy task in itself. You had to find an area that was reasonably flat, and not in a drainage pathway.
The pottery is looking fantastic and you will keep getting better and better, but I am impressed at the level you have already accomplished. Great job.
Anyway, glad you didn’t pay attention to the people who are not doing the work and are not there. You can’t show every little decision and obstacle you have had to consider, but people need to learn patience.
Great job Chad. I am really impressed with the new hut and I know it will bring you comfort when it is completed. Also, the torch was a great idea! It put out a lot of light !
