Hunting Ants and Drinking Muddy Water (episode 14)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- Obtaining clean and safe drinking water is a high priority in any survival situation. It is a good idea to carry a filter when spending time in the wilderness but in the case that a filter is not available, what primitive techniques can be used to filter natural water as a first step in the disinfection process? In this video I explore one very simple filtration technique and then weather conditions interrupt my efforts. Nonetheless, I collected the muddy river water and did my best to make it safe. According to the research I've done and personal experience, boiling natural water will make it safe to drink, however, the potential presence of heavy metals or chemicals, which are not neutralized by boiling alone, may be present in the water and make it unsafe if consumed during a long period of time. In this video I also snacked on raw ants as a nutritious snack. This series will be ongoing so be sure to stay tuned for the next video.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Who films you?
Me. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything, all alone. On a few occasions I may be accompanied by a friend.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share locations.
Where did you get your sandals?
I first started wearing sandals on outdoor adventures in February 2014. I’m so glad that I did because wearing these Luna Sandals has really helped strengthen my feet. You can see their selection of adventure and running sandals at this link: www.lunasandal...
(Note: I receive an affiliate commission from any sales derived from clicking on the link above)
Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently to collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work well and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.
How many languages do you speak?
My first language is English but I also speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I also speak very little Russian. I may soon begin learning more languages.
How old are you?
I was born in 1972. At the time of this video I was 48.
Where did you get the music in your videos?
This series is the first one that I am making all the music myself. I recently made a drum and maracas (rumba shaker). I am now using them to create the intro and ending music in my videos, but before in the past I have used royalty free music from several sources including UA-cam. Sometimes I bought the music but usually it was free.

It’s so odd watching survivalists in other parts of the world struggling so with acquiring drinking water when here in Norway, you can pretty much just drink any water.
You Norwegians and your...glaciers! For real though that's pretty awesome.
Yeah, the water up there is great to drink straight from the source. In Alaska I always drank straight from the streams.
These type of videos makes you wanna sleep, it's not boring but the sounds of the nature are very soothing
I have drunk muddy water before when its boiled but i didn't get any issues, you such a great person living with completely nothing and have to get everything from scratch. I believe you don't take anything for granted.
I have drunk it before like this too and didn't have a problem. I would love to hear from someone that lived in a village that only had muddy water to drink.
In a remote village i grew up in Uganda, we didn't have tap water or borehole water. It is a dry place and water is a blessing, however muddy it is, once you fetch it from the dug up pond, we you utilize it, sometimes we would boil it, sometimes when its finished and thirsty, you end up drinking the muddy water. We never got typhoid at anytime. Perhaps our immune system was strong
Man I love your videos idk why, they're waay more entertaining than other videos
Ah, thanks so much! I appreciate it!
That reminds me of when I’m at the beach when I dig holes to build a sandcastle sometimes water fills up the hole I’m digging up.
Haha, I've done that too. Lesson learned. Don't build a sand castle when the tide is rising.
This man is an absolute unit, a beast of a human. I mean c'mon his name is literally Chad it doesn't get more perfect than that
Hahahaha
It was very windy today, but your determination and desire to be authentic in what you do shone through.....so relaxing to watch your efforts Chad. Thanks
The worst part about the wind is that it is really difficult to film because the sound is horrible. I had to often wait for brief moments to film when the wind was less.

So there are these packets called P&G Purifier of Water. Each one treats about 2.5 gallons of water. A box of 240 costs $100.00; and with a couple of buckets, and a cloth to use for filtering, this would allow you to treat several gallons of water at a time and store it.
Is that a chemical solution?

@@emp0rizzle The Stacies will have already reached a much higher level of development, taking you all prisoners and make you slaves.
Growing up in Africa and spending most of my time with natives, I drank water from containers used as their only available water, tanks or drums loaded with mosquitoes. Before drinking, we taped the tank to cause them to dive from the surface, then we scooped up a can full, and drink. Great old times.
I miss living as a free person, hunting and fishing for meals, not as a sport.
Taking a little bit each day from Mother Earth, and to share with others, but never feel greed, leaving others with nothing.
That is a life of gratitude! You appreciate the true necessities and live each day in gratitude. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
How can you help your self feel more free again?
@@georgewhitehouse8630 … can’t. Even that country has lost its freedom. Actually, it’s now communist and the rich are not sharing, as it was intended to be. The rich and politicians got control of everything, and the promises about the rich paying their share, WAS BULL SCHITT. Now no one has guns to go hunting, and they can’t afford to buy fishing equipment. As a kid, I use to go fishing almost every day, and I gave the fish to the poor. I lived free because I was a kid. I was free to do whatever I wanted. There was no laws on raising your own food, whether it was animals or vegetables. Anyone was allowed to find a piece of land and call it his own. Politicians and taxes and greed, ended it all.

It may also be helpful to have a source of salt as well, given all of the water around the area. Salt is also very important in survival situations! If you get hurt (hopefully not) you can flush your wounds, it can replace lost electrolytes, it can preserve meat, AND tan hides as well as dehydrate other resources. It might be something worth looking into when you get everything settled.
For salt, he can use clean ash
Yes, no doubt. I need to make a trip out to the ocean.
Im not sure why but when I read hunting ants, I imagined you with a tiny bow and arrow shooting at ants lmao
Hahahahaha!
Award Chad with the field scout badge.
Scouting around to find out what is in your area is a good Idea and reveals
resources that you can use and more importantly, regrow or replant or regenerate the source.
It's a great idea to not only be a taker of resource but a caretaker and a replacer of the resource.
This allows you to continue to take but to also replace and replenish not just for you but the wild life and
plants. So important to remember that.
I totally agree. We should be caretakers of the earth.
What an awesome quest. I wish someone would do the same thing but in a wet cold climate for comparison 🧐
Can I make a suggestion for when you boil water or cook something in a hole like that? Why not find a couple of forked sticks, preferably green, but as they won't be in contact with the fire very long, any forked sticks will do. Cut one side of the fork off short, maybe an inch or two, and cut the stick off right below the fork, but leave one side of the fork long. Make sure the shorter fork is small enough to fit through the holes in the handles of your pot, but still sturdy enough to use to lift the full pot out by. That way you can hold the long part of the fork to remove your pot without having to reach down into the fire for it. It would save your hands from getting burned as much.
I usually use sticks to move around my hot cooking pots but in this case I was in a real hurry because it was getting dark and my camera doesn't record well in low light.
As always - great video!

Always a pleasure to watch your videos. I wonder how you will deal with water in the future, and what you will do to collect rainwater. A bigger pot would also be useful to boil more water, at least near your main camp, I guess it is somewhere on your list.
Yeah, I haven't found really good clay yet but even if I don't, I will make large containers with the clay at the bottom of the hole I'm digging by my shelter. I will then seal it with tree resin.
14:40 Better clean that rock, so that the water doesn't get dirt in it !! Keep up the amazing work, man !

Ive always wondered how far away you go from society to build your huts and camps. Love watching your stuff!
This place is quite far. Sometimes I can't even get there.
Just thinking about those ants. " Hey guys. Harvey's dead. Let's get his body and give him a nice funeral. Oh my god! No!"
My favourite show to watch at breakfast!
Oh the struggle. I feel you.
But!!! I can't remember what tribe did this. Klamath mabie? they took a long pice of reed and filled it with cleaned sand in between the nodes. And sucked it up to clean the water. And spit it out into a pottery container. Rinse and repeat until they had enough.
So if you can find a natural straw of some sort mabie give it a shot. Might try adding some black hardwood charcoal as well.
I know puting dirty water in the mouth doesn't sound fun. Still better than dysentery.
I think I know what you're talking about - giant cane. Also known as carrizo, or reed. It is hollow and appears like bamboo. That is interesting. I never heard of them sucking the straw like a LifeStraw. Good tip!
i used to play things like this as a child with my friends and cousins. It was so much fun.

Nice. I liked that mixed sand & gravel river bed. It could make a nice water filter for you!
Thank you for explaining your choice to camp where you do. It’s obvious once explained. Brilliant work, once again. Didn’t expect a new vid today, so it was a pleasant surprise when it popped up. Ants though....the only ants I have on my property here (Tasmania, Australia) are called “Jack Jumpers”....and those buggers hurt! Have killed more people that snakes and sharks combined! So I’ll stick to my fish and veggies! 😀
Wow! Why are those ants so dangerous?
i wouldnt doubt hes stacked on his food supply, somewhere near him. There is no way he survives off this diet
There is a LOT out there you can eat if you know what to look for. I can easily go find an entire salad not farther than 5 feet from my front door, and I live in town. Within that distance there's:
Dandelions
Red Clover
White Clover
Wood Sorel
Purslane
Violets
Crabgrass
Chicory
All of these are edible nutritious food chock full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and some of them even contain protein. And that is only the ones that grow within feet of my front door, just a drop in the bucket of the good nutritious edible food that grows wild all over the place.
Chad is FAR from starving, even relying ONLY on wild food sources. Yeah, procuring and preparing that food takes longer than going to Wendy's, or even Krogers. But wild food is plentiful, if time consuming. The reason he doesn't always focus on food in his videos is because it could easily become the "Chad's wild food kitchen" channel if he did, and that's NOT what it's SUPPOSED to be.
@@juliebaker6969 They didn't say he was cheating though. He probably has a foraged food supply that he doesn't show us cause he thinks exploring, building and finding new things is more interesting to watch than seeing him eat the same things over and over.
(Or he has a bag full of protein bars hidden away somewhere. Who knows)
@@MsLilly200 all I know is that there have been a couple of times I wondered if he had actually done something the way he shows, and asked him about it (in the comment section, I don't know him personally), and he was quite adamant that he HAD done things exactly as shown. Hi Chad! I heard about ant eggs, but did not know that the ants themselves can be eaten. As a child, we collected ant juice. We gnawed a bark stick and put it in the anthill. The ants attacked the stick. After that, we shook off the ants from the stick and licked it. Brightly sour taste, incomparable with anything. Sorry for the google translator.
: - =)
Yes, the formic acid is spicy sour in taste. I've eaten raw ants for several years.
I would use the dead cow carcase skin as a roof. Boiling the water and collecting the vapor into a catch basin will provide purified drinking water. It may not be easy to set up but is well worth the effort.
When I first found the cow carcass I thought of using the hide as a roof, but after I placed a piece of it in the water and discovered how brittle it became I quickly discarded that idea. I really don't know if there is anything useful I can do with it. It still smells like rotting flesh too.... Making a distillery would be great but yes, it will require me to make some equipment. Maybe later on I will.
I will promise you 3 cents if you could fend off a Coyote all by yourself
