Fire in the Hole! Dakota Fire Hole Pottery Kiln (episode 26)

- I’m very close to beginning construction of the new Primitive adobe hut but first I need to collect some more materials and fire up some clay pottery. I’ll be using some pottery pieces during the building process. I need a kiln to fire the pottery and the Dakota fire hole is a great way to achieve that goal. The Dakota fire hole (or pit) is basically a hole dug in the ground with a smaller hole attached to it through an underground tunnel. The flow of air through the tunnel feeds the fire and produces more heat than a ground level campfire. The fire in a Dakota fire hole burns within the hole thus making the flames less visible from the ground and it also produces less smoke. This series will be ongoing so be sure to stay tuned for the next video.

Who films you?
Me. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything, all alone. On a few occasions I may be accompanied by a friend, but that has been very rare.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share locations.
Where did you get your sandals?

Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently to collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work well and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.
How many languages do you speak?
My first language is English but I also speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I also speak very little Russian. I may soon begin learning more languages.
How old are you?
I was born in 1972. At the time of this video I was 49.
Where did you get the music in your videos?
This series is the first one that I am making all the music myself. I recently made a drum and maracas (rumba shaker). I am now using them to create the intro and ending music in my videos, but before in the past I have used royalty free music from several sources including UA-cam. Sometimes I bought the music but usually it was free. - Навчання та стиль

Good job Chad! I suggested something pretty similar in my last comment lol. It's been great to watch your ceramic journey from those early videos. There has been SO much improvement. I'd still like to see longer firing, but it's clear they will be durable enough for what you want. I'm not so keen on the clay you're using. Make sure you keep the pots very clean. Some shiny impurities can actually turn toxic unless very strict hygeine is followed. If you can find purer clay, somewhere around a past or current riverbank (usually on bends) I would REALLY encourage that. Of course it could just be mica. You're the one seeing it, so you make the judgement!
Also, I'd make some sort of fan/bellows for your kiln. Those high temperatures are important. Get those babies glowing if at all possible! Especially if you're going to be making bigger storage containers. You need strength. But it was definitely a big step in the right direction! When you have time you could build some higher walls into the pit with a slight narrow to increase further its draw, you want as much temperature for as little wood as possible. 👍👍
Thank you Alyssa for your valuable insight and advice. I assume that the minerals in the clay are pyrite. I read that it is not soluble in water so there is really nothing to worry about. I don't know if these pieces achieved a heat level hot enough to make them glow. They were kind of buried in the flames when I left them to burn out. I have a question though. How long should ceramics be fired? How long should I keep the flames going? In my experience I have not found a difference between 45 minutes or 90 minutes. I have received many pieces of advice regarding many things that I have been doing and so often the advice isn't relevant. I have been warned by many of the looming disasters that await me yet they never come. But, I would love to read your thoughts on how to make this Dakota fire hole burn as hot as possible to make these clay pieces glow red as hell!!! :-) Thanks again!

I never considered a Dakota Fire Hole for firing pottery. You've shown it's absolutely perfect and seems to be easier to build than a kiln.. ty. 👍👍👍👍👍
Yeah, it's definitely easier but probably not quite as effective as a kiln but it's still a good option.
It's kind of interesting how the rocks in that area don't seem to be very strong or sharp. Almost like a handicap if you're trying different survivalist styles. Damn though if Chad isn't making the best of it.
It depends a lot on the rock type. Some shatter far easier than others. Most mountain stone is fragile. That big dog he dragged in at the start looks sturdy. 😅
Yeah, that is the case with most of the rock I find here. That's why I haven't made an axe or other stone tools. It's a waste of time. The large stone I carried in also breaks rather easy. If I were to drop it on another rock it may split in two.
Hey Chad, some advice with someone who is well versed in rocks;
Take some of the stones in your area, arrange them in a circle amongst each other, then build and maintain as large a fire as possible on top of your stone pile. With any luck at least Some of the stones will partially melt under the heat and become slightly glassy, similar to flint or obsidian. This will make them ideal for making stone knives and arrowheads

Great pottery! We have a similar kiln in our museum, dated to the Iron age. Before the pottery is dry completely, we polish each piece for 30-60 min. This way, it becomes waterproof and is as smooth as glazed ceramics.
Yes! I do that too. I only polished these pieces a little because they were more for testing but a good polished piece is so smooth and even waterproof.
I'm happy to see you making pottery. As you well know, pottery is invaluable and can improve your circumstances. Well done! I've been thinking you might get a better quality of clay with less work to produce it down by the river. Yes, you'd have to haul it back but it would be well worth it. Happy pottery making!🤗
Thank you Katherine! I will have to dig down by the river and see what I can find. I tested some clay there I found near the surface and it worked but not as well as this clay. So I need to dig into the earth and explore.

@@jerrid86 Yeah, that's probably the case here. The canyon is deep and there are many smaller canyons that feed into it.

It is too bad that the rocks there have a tendacy to shatter when put under stress , such as striking. That really limits you on the materials you have at your disposal. I was thinking, go down by the creek and look for different types of rocks that have been washed down from different areas. Maybe somewhere in all those rocks you could find something more suitable for tools. I hope so anyway. It sure would make things a bit easier. Please excuse me for my the tendency to push my own personal ideas on you, and YOUR work. LOL! Can’t help it, you kinda inspire my imagination, and I feel the need to share the ideas, even though I know you have probably thought of them yourself.

@@ChadZuberAdventures After the hit is built things should be able to go a bit easier. You have spent so much time digging that hole for use in the bricks, along with forming and sanding the finished bricks. A lot of work, time and effort has gone into the brick making process. And during the hottest time of the year too! And along with that searching for food and water , and building your temporary hut. After the hut is done you will have a lot more time to explore and experiment. I imagine that the need to build the hut is weighing heavily on your mind, and once that is completed you will have more peace of mind. Everytime I see that hole you have dug I am amazed, and all dug literally by hand. Hey Chad, I had another idea for you, you should write a book talking about your experiences in living off the land with basically nothing to start. Would be really interesting

When my kids were younger we would pitch a tent in the back yard and "camp" in there. Once they fell asleep
I could not resist my memory foam mattress just a few yards away. Dude, you don't need to beat yourself up like this. When you are old you will feel all of it, trust me.
I am already feeling all of it. Here's the funny thing though. I feel best when I sleep in a hammock. So simple and so good. I don't think I've ever slept on a memory foam and I'm quite sure I never will. I've traveled to small villages in Mexico and the old men sleep in hammocks and they are strong as an ox. Technology only weakens us.
@@ChadZuberAdventures Hammocks were once cutting edge technology, twice one would argue. 😉 What is technology but the new developments of bright minds? When the hammock came to the West, it revolutionised how sailors slept on big ships of the line, transport and exploration vessels. It underwent many design changes for naval use, and spread around the world. Then there was the beginning of the hammock. It's relatively young compared to other sleeping technologies, I think they've traced it to around 900ish years ago in Central America. The West found the indigenous inhabitants using hammocks when landing on islands, and took the idea. And probably the hammocks. 😔😔
So, this is my long way of saying I'm not going to say no to memory foam either. I understand why you are content without it Chad, but I think as long as my life has enough contrast to comfort, and I'm not a mindless dull slave never venturing out of my space... a modest memory foam mattress that takes care of my bad back is a good thing. That being said, I would and do stay away from it for at least ONE night, especially for kids, jeez. Maybe you could twine enough yucca to make a hammock, Chad? A winter project? Or for nights... Something to keep in mind design wise as you build your hut perhaps, some way of fastening a hammock.... I always write too much.

That cactus reminded me I have some cactus pear. I eat exotic fruits that really can't be found in most stores in ND, and don't grow here. I love apples, oranges(even though they don't grow here), grapes, etc., but I love the fruits and veggies that most people won't eat. I found some red cactus pear the other day at a local store, so, of course, I'm game. Guess who's now going to try to grow some cacti? Lol! I'm going to try cooking it next time, though. The seeds are VERY hard to chew. I might try to plant them, and see I they'll grow indoors.
Well don't chew the seeds or you'll break your teeth! You may want to try using the cactus pear skins after you eat the pulp and place them in a jar with water and a little sugar and ferment them. Five days later you'll have a delicious beverage.

I have been wanting to go and dig a hole in the woods and make a fire since yesterday 🤣🤣🤣. I'm South African but live in Dublin, Ireland and I have a small piece of woods about 1km from my house. I haven't made fire in about 5 years for a Braai (BBQ). So the thought came to mind that I would be able too make a fire for a Braai and the meat would be done very quickly 🤣🤣🤣🤣 The stuff that goes through my head. I'll get myself arrested or the Guardai will join in. One of the two.
Be careful. That sparkling mineral in the pottery may be iron pyrite, which decays into iron sulfides (Sulphur) which can be bad.

I did some reading about that after I read your comment and it seems that's not quite accurate. Pyrite doesn't dissolve in water. Pyrite is an extremely common mineral in the earth and if it were so dangerous we would all be dead.
That process first needs it to oxidize AND then constant contact with water for a decade to finally turn into (small amounts of) sulfuric acid.

This was one of those synchronicity moments. I had just been thinking about Dakota fire hole and help people don't build them right and in my estimation anyway in my not-so-humble opinion. I was just thinking about how the fact that if they built the side up with around the exhaust Port the hole with dirt and rocks in order to make a chimney stack brannock's video CSU building your Dakota fire hole really big biggest one I've ever seen then you have started putting rocks and dirt around it and your packet with their that's really awesome I love that you're just doing almost what I want to see happen with these!!!

I love the way your hair looks bleached by the sun. Mine is already going back to normal as we are well into winter at this stage.
There is still a lot of sun out here so it will probably keep that bleached look year round.
@@ChadZuberAdventures If I leave mine grow as long as yours is currently, it will probably be alternating between the summer bleached look and my regular brown hair that grows during the winter. I will see as more time passes.

Quite education as always, and never fails to stay uniquely entertaining. I hope to make and fire my own pottery some day but the clay available to me is much much different to yours and seems to have worse properties although that's probably up to the additives to change that. Also, my bottle gourd did not ripen fully and is now dying slowly in the cold mornings we are experiencing. I will try to plant much earlier next year to give me better odds of growing a bottle!
The bottle gourd may still work if you cut it and keep it in a dry place.
