Téir abhaile 'riú - LYRICS + Translation - Celtic Woman

- This is what’s known as a “matchmaking song” in the Irish tradition.
It tells the story of a young woman, Méirí, who’s been eyeing up sailors (and then a piper) over the course of an evening - most likely during a seisiún ceol. The singer may be the woman’s father, teasing her for taking an interest in such men.
Performed by Celtic Woman
Album: Believe (2011)
she sounds like she had so much passion while singing this, and it's mostly why this song attracts me so much. her voice sounds genuinely excited and upbeat and she sounds passionate about her work, i love it so much!
Vitalify which one of the four ladies?
Falgorn A Think they meant the lead singer?
Vitalify here is the link for the actual performance ua-cam.com/video/1g7XO7gICAo/v-deo.html

A long time ago and far, far away I was a sailor. Some of the things I did were worth remembering. Others less so. This group of women are stunningly beautiful and marvelous singers. Thank you.
That sounds pretty nice Greg.

That’s a viola.
Well yeah it's her job
When I was in 7th, the teacher of chorus showed us a video of a Celtic Woman concert and the violinist dances as she plays.

In my mind, Meiri had a magical night with one of the sailors and thought she'd never see him again, yet she returns to the docks nonetheless, and tomorrow she's to find out her arranged marriage is actually to that sailor who was a nobleman masquerading as a sailor the whole time😊

Perfect description of what I feel 😊
Many years ago in a small village in Ireland near Galway, there was a little girl named Mhéíri. She was a very independent even as a young child. She loved traveling and learning things. She dreamed of traveling far away and exploring the world. Nobody in the village understood her, she often went to the ocean or the forest. She would try to go as far as she could.
Once she reached 14, Mhéíri had come up with a plan to escape her village. That day she packed up her stuff and left to get in her boat. All of the villagers watched as she walked towards the ocean. She was off to Galway and no one could stop her.
The villagers tried to tell her to forget her dreams. She realized they loved her and she decided to stay for the night. She didn't know what tomorrow would bring, but she enjoyed her last night with the village she loved.
ughh this resonates with me and the city life so much. even I want to go away to a forest and travel and explore but some stupid responsibilities I have here :( ill go someday away from all this I want to live a peaceful life in a simple village and a very simple job helping people and chatting with simple people about their lives and some stories . I want a life like that . there is always gossiping and people talking about responsibilities and all. where I just want to run away far from the people away and stay happily in a cottage reading books and working or farming .

@@lulolie Im Irish and nearly all of Ireland is countryside, i live in a medieval seaside village which i can definitely say is living in the countryside even though it as a local village but with vintage shops and there's a market every Sunday in the next village over, all Irish people learn Irish Gaelic in school most of Ireland is still in the early 1900s in nearly everything so 14 is definitely not too young for this song!
When you hear Gaeilge, you can definitely understand why Irish accents formed to what they are. It is beautiful to listen to!
(Sorry I spelled it wrong guys!! I genuinely didn't realize until 2 years later! Fixed it!)

Gaelic is actually a sport, not a language. Our language is called Irish, or Gaeilge.
The Irish language is Gaeilge, not Gaelic
1 letter from garlic but either way I love it
Everyone correcting you is ironically ignoring the fact that Gaelic is the correct English term for Celtic languages, for standard Irish it would be Gaeilge. Irish speaking areas are known as Gaeltacht

Gaelic is like French in the manner of the syllables don't sound like you expect them to, so they kind of blend together.

The line 'your match is made' is kinda sad to me as my great grandmother was forced to marry an older man by the men in her village. She lived in a small village outside Galway so she probably wished she could run away to Galway too! Although not to a man as she wished to be a nun 😅
i’m gonna be honest. i had the worst day and was gonna shower. before i showered i put the song and literally forgot abt everything and just danced in the bathroom pretending i had a gorgeous dress on and was in a forest. it was truly magical in my head lmao. then it stopped and i came back to reality.
For clarification's sake it's pronounced
Cheer a va ree-oo
Cheer a va ree-oo
Cheer a va ree-oo Merry
Cheer a val goose fan sa valley
Mar ta doo varreea chenta
That’s more or less how it’s pronounced. I might be a bit off on some of the last line.
Héroe sin capa 👏🏼
I love you xD this is the only part idk how to sing :')
Chomh fada agus is eol dom, tá an t-aistriúchán sin ceart.
The "valley" would be more like "valluh" and "varreea" would be "varrgha" where the gh is almost like a gargling but other than that I think you're pretty spot on (I'm going by Scottish Gaelic pronunciation which isn't far off Gaeilge for these words)
I speak Ulster Irish and that pronunciation confused me... Is it a Connacht thing to pronounce them that way??
This was my exact experience in Galway two weeks ago. Irish men grabbing me in old pubs and dancing around the wooden floor while the whole pub sang. i like to think the chorus of the other girls are Meiri's sisters. They accompany her to town most of the time but sometimes she sneaks off by herself and the sisters go pick her up before dawn so their parents won't notice. The part near the end is when Meiri's sisters get caugth on their way to pick up their sister and so their panrents ground them. Meiri wants to say goodbye to a sailor she meet the day after she gets confiened to her room so her sisters approach her and one of them disguises herself as Meiri while the real one sneaks off. In the instrumental she's running to town to give her sailor one "see you soon" kiss.

And next she's going to Galway
Jiggin' around and off to town
And won't be back until morning

For reels and jigs and maybe more
Stay here and never you mind
The lights of the town are blinding you
The sailors they come and they go
But listen to what's reminding you
Handsome men surrounding you
Dancing a reel around you

The interpretation in the description is cool, but I think of the voices of the other people toward Meiri are actually her dwelling on the opposition people have told herself. I think this is most apparent when it says "The sailors they come and they go, but listen to what's reminding you." Meiri is full of second thoughts about this, remembering her responsibilities (You've got work to do in the morning) and remembering her betrothed. Eventually she decides to turn back away from Galway and goes back home to stay with her betrothed (I'm falling for the flow of home) and decides to dance with him instead, which is very beautiful.
Either way, a really great song.
It's so beautiful how a single song can unite us

This song is my whole life in an Irish primary school, we would sing it almost every day but completely in irish
God, I have such a cinamatic visual of this song. With Meiri going to the neighboring port city whilest other folks in her village scoff at how she's running off to dance and flirt with the sailors, and the harbor's just glistening with lights as the nightlife sorta takes over. Everything's vibrant, girls giddily try and get the sailors' attention, Meiri's living it up despite the fact that she's got work in the morning.

Another gorgeous song from Celtic Woman! Thanks for putting that explanation, too, in the description. Fascinating!
Something that I want to point out that just makes this song even better than it is is the fact that at 1:07, the chorus of women trying to call the main singer home to do work put a little STING on the first syllable of "jigging" in their next verse. It's really quick, but it sounds so condescending and perfectly encapsulates their tone with Meiri throughout the song. I don't know if it was intentional, maybe that's just how the energy of the song was going, but I swear it sounds intentional and it's amazing.
For anyone who hasn't, watch the live version of this song. It adds 2 things, but its so much in total. The man better than any sailors does an Irish dance, and the "play your spoons" part is actually done

Here from tik tok. Probably the prettiest song I have ever heard
rendezvous lol at least I’m not the only one couldn’t figure out what it was from
same
Where on TikTok, do you have a video?
@@beep37 I am sorry. I had deleted TikTok a couple months ago, so I wouldn't be able to help you :(
Ahhh i know
This song, though positive, gives me goosebumps every time. No idea why. Love this!
Celtic/Irish folk music is my favorite kind of music, as I don’t relate to many others(I’m Aro/ace). This is my comfort song, and I love it.
I love your videos. You have EXACTLY my same music tastes, it's incredible! I subscribed, thank you a lot for sharing this music
I'm so glad I found this song on TikTok. Even if I'm sad this song gives me my enthusiasm back.
I havent found it on tiktok but i see what you mean. Its so happy and jolly. And in my dark times i only want to be my happy jolly self. This song helps!
After hearing this song i cant control my smiling ..mood booster❤
My mom keeps wanting us to connect to our Irish Scottish and Celtic roots and this song is just 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼I love it
I forgot that this was Celtic! It’s amazing! I feel like this would be in a musical!
I have to thank this song for spawning one of my essential characters for a story of mine, into my mind. She's an interesting character to write.
I've come to listen to this song several times a day, today I heard it on the forsaken shall not be named social media. I almost didn't notice. Run to the hills and save your young.
I swear, this song is an instant mood boost for me. I hear it and I can't stop smiling, and I start dancing, and I want to sing the lyrics as loud as I can, and it SUCKS cause I'm inside at night with several other people right now so I can't sing it or else I'll wake them up.
After listening to this song for a two hour loop so I could sing along with it well I did my chores, I have concluded that I no longer want to be a psychologist or lawyer. I am running away to Galway in a long dress with flowing sleeves to dance in a pub with sailors.
Me and you have the same dream. See you in Galway
I love Celtic woman songs, they're all awesome!
Está canción me da una sensación de libertad y es algo mágico, como si recordara una vida pasada algo muy loco la sensación simplemente es algo mágico esto✨🌙☀️
woo no soy la única persona que habla español aquí 🤭🤭
I can see this in my mind vividly: Mheiri and her sisters going to the evening market. Mheiri sneaks off to go dancing with her sailor. They find them both in a large crowd, dancing with one another. They try to get to her to bring her home, slowly but surely they get swept up into the music and revelry.
Just dancing to this song and spinning until my head hurts has made me the happiest ive been in weeks.
This song vibes with my current DnD character. She's an air genasi sorcerer that grew up in a strict convent and ran away to pursue a life of adventure. Last session she went carosing, made friends with some sailors and got in a (very one sided) fight with a young bronze dragon. Good times!
Neat.
Love Dnd so much can happen its awesome
She sounds like a princess.
This is such a Disney-esque song, along the lines of the opening song of Beauty and the Beast. I love it!
Are the words "reel" and "jig" supposed to be a play on words? 'Cuz you could interpret "reel" as in fishing reels or drunk staggering. You could also interpret "jig" as a fishing jig or lively dancing. There are sailors in this song who could also be fisherman.
a 'reel' is also a type of dance/ piece of music to dance to
They're styles of dance music
Oh god no,those are different types of dances in irish dance
TheSilverSmith lol maybe xD
Both are traditional Irish dances.
I love being irish because we have music like this and some legends ❤😂
This song is just so good for no reason
