I have 4 pending auditions but I'm not waiting around to hear back before submitting more. Yeah, I just started putting auditions out recently and it is a little nerve-wracking waiting to either be accepted or not. So I just like to keep looking and leave that in my background and if I receive an offer before the previous one then at least it's something I know I would be passionate about reading because I'm not auditioning for anything that I may not enjoy reading or interested in yah know? And what I started t =o do was comb through the filters when searching for a book. It can be a little fun playing around with different vocal styles, and genres you feel the most compelled to read. You got this, try your voice in different genres and styles etc., you may surprise yourself! Good luck!!!!

ACX are really stringent on audio quality and rightly so. I have a Degree in sound and some good equipment and my first two books still got thrown back for tiny things. They are right to do this, I would hate to spend £15 on an audiobook and for it to have mouth clicks, breathing and it sounding like it's recorded through a sock.

You probably won't believe me but I prayed if I should give this a try because my neice is studying the constitution and she and her teacher said they liked my reading voice. Ever since I lost my job and income due to covid and the riots I have really been wanting a career change that I honestly would love and wouldn't mind investing into. Next thing I know your video pop up about acx and my ig too. I liked and subscribed and thank you for your honesty and it didn't deter me at all it makes me wanna do it at all. I'm nervous but I really wanna try this out.

There is a problem with copyright violation on ACX. I had someone pretending to be me claiming my books on that site and then asking narrators to do royalty-share agreements. This person got away with conning two narrators before I was able to catch it. I only caught it because a handful of narrators contacted me directly to ask if I had pitched my books to them. This person who was pretending to be me hurt me and the narrators. I ended up contacting Amazon about the audiobooks to get them removed. In that situation, a narrator would probably be told the contract was canceled without ACX saying "why".
That is a possible scenario with the case you're talking about in this video where the person's contract was canceled with no explanation from ACX.
As a side note: the thief who stole my books later went on to take the audiobook files that ACX LET them download (for free since the narrators were never paid) and put them on Findaway Voices. I managed to get Findaway Voices to remove those books from the other retailers. These thieves are smart.
OMG! That's INSANE! I'm so sorry this happened to you. But it totally makes sense when it comes to the situation I was speaking of. I really appreciate you sharing. As someone with a law enforcement background, I do know about a variety of scams, but this is the first I've heard of this.

So true. You have to take it seriously. People should do their research. I'm a beginner but I'm doing voice lessons/exercises. Watching other Voice-over artist and actors videos who give advice and I already listened to audiobooks religiously. I also watch audacity tutorials. I plan on going to other platforms as well. Thank you so much for your frank and honest points about ACX. Right off the bat, I do not like AT ALL that they can just cancel a contract without giving a specific reason. That doesn't strike me as much of a contract. Time is money. I can't see putting all my time and talent into something and then the job just ending without any real reason given. That is very unprofessional in my book. Sounds like Amazon is trying to maximize their own bank account and are not very interested in integrity.

Hi Nikki, thank you for this video, and you're right, I have done 12 auditions for ACX in the past 2 weeks and am learning a lot. You're telling the truth, it does take time to get projects approved, I have two audiobooks done, one is selling on Audible now and the other is getting reviewed. I keep on submitting auditions even though I haven't gotten a contract yet, I do have several pending auditions and will remain motivated and thanks for your info! Yes. Thank you for the knowledge. I expected it to be serious, which is why I invested in getting a condenser mic, an audio interface, pop filter and some insulation around the mic and mic stand.
It makes sense why anyone and everyone would want a high quality sound and reading of their published book. No one who's serious about their audiobooks, wants crap!
I also think having experience in Radio Broadcasting and Theatre when I was in school also really helped how I present my voice.

Imagine thinking you could run your mouth into a cell phone and make $50, $100, or more per hour chillin on the couch. Like people are not going to demand a _lot_ for that king of money. There's no such thing as a free lunch. There are way too many YTers hyping audiobook narration like it's easy as Uber. They do this to get you emotionally hooked to their channel so you watch more of their videos and get them that sweet sweet ad rev. It's dishonest and gross. Nikki setting the record straight. Ya love to see it.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be able to do this , I have a really loud and annoying roommate, and my Dad is always watching TV all loud. I know how to use Final Cut Pro professionally, but it would be hard to edit that noise out. Thanks for the tips.

can you record on your phone, yes... if you buy a USB converter and plug your blue yeti mic into it lol
You can record however you'd like. The quality, that's a different story. You'd be competing with people that have quality equipment, so keep that in mind. But it's always your choice.
I have a tin ear where eq is concerned. No matter how I tweak, it sounds like I'm in a garbage can. For that reason alone, I suspect acx may not be for me.

What is the payment method on acx? How do the narrators get paid.. I mean in which platform?
Regarding the viewer who left the comment about her contract with ACX getting unexpectedly cancelled: This actually sounds like it may have been a scam. Like it *said* it was one of the biggest authors, etc, etc, but if the author profile turned out to be fake, or couldn't be authenticated by ACX, or ACX already had that author registered under a different profile/account....then they would look more closely and cancel the contract so that the VO artist doesn't get scammed into providing work for someone who may not pay or may not use their work as intended.

Thank You! I would love to add audio book narration to my wfh gig. I do freelance transcription and wish I could forward part of your vid to some clients because some audios I get sound like they were recorded inside a tin can while underwater with a dozen marbles in their mouth!

So yeah, your recording matters. I mean, if you were buying the book in audio form, you want and expect clear audio. ACX probably has those strict rules for some good reasons from experience.

Hey Janine. A room typically has some noise, even if we don’t realize it. Muting the clip would be dead silence. That’s what can’t happen. Thing is, sometimes room noise is too loud causing additional editing. This gets quite technical, which is why I cover it in my Audiobook Blueprint course (linked in the description).

Hello! I just wanted to say thank you for doing this video it’s extremely helpful. I just had a quick question regarding the FPH payment. On the website it goes into more detail on the royalty payment method. So does FPH means you get paid per hour?

Hey! I understand. Things can totally be confusing. It’s actually PFH, which stands for Per Finished Hour. So, you’d get paid based off of the final time. For example, it may take 20 hours to record and edit a 2-hour audiobook. You’d get paid for the finished time. Meaning the 2 hours. Not the 20 it actually took to make it.

You can negotiate with the author as to a final price. The contract, confusingly may say a specified amount that's lower than what the author agreed to pay you, however, make sure they confirm the amount you agree upon on the ACX messages so it's traceable. Their audiobook only goes on sale when you confirm receipt of the correct payment amount. I've done a few PFH where I've negotiated a final price and there's never been a problem. I wouldn't do it with a book over 2 hours long though, or if the book looks like it would sell really well, I'd definitely go for a Royalty Share.
I do have a concern when it comes to how I sound because different people hear different things from me. Some people hear a general American accent, which is what I’m going for. Others can hear another accent. They may not be able to tell exactly where I’m from, but they can hear that it’s not America.
I’d suggest choosing the accent you actually have. Native speakers can recognize the authenticity. And some books don’t mind any accent. So, don’t get too caught up on it. Just go for it. 😊

Okay great, so I’m on right now and it says “upload your audio file (MP3) to be considered for the producer role” so that means I would be producing, correct?
Acx website makes it seem so easy if you don’t have experience. I watched a video with the acx creators and they were like drill sergeants. I thought it was gonna be a lil easier than it is for a beginner. If you have no experience the creators make it seem like you may as well not even try. They want many samples and I just don’t have professional acting experience. Is there any room for a beginner with a great voice??? I bought a good mike ($200 audio technica) Bought egg crate panels. Bought a mike stand. Made a soundproof booth. Even bought a standup tent to create a soundproof room. I downloaded Audacity and levelator. It’s the recording requirements for me that gets confusing. I’m no audio engineer but I guess I need to become one!

If the editing/mastering portion is not your forte, you can outsource it. Try Fiverr or any other similar website, you can have it done really affordably.
If you use Audacity download the ACX check plug in your can run a check. You can also set up a macro to run to set limiter, normaliser etc automatically. Floor noise can be easily adjusted in Audacity using the the 6 6,6, setting in floor noise. I've worked on 2 books since March both up within 7 days no issues.

can you use a mic that you plug into your phone with an app like mic swap?
Hello. You are allowed to record on whichever devices you choose. But a likely issue from recording on a phone would be severely reduced quality. And if a contract is involved, the audio must meet the strict ACX quality. That’s why I discourage phone recording. Good luck.

I'm trying to figure out is this some kind of weird scam cuz I've been getting messages on my ACX written by the author but it's like they don't drop a link for me to audition for the book. They'll just tell me like the title and how they would like for me to audition and I'll be like yeah cool I'll go for it but when I search for the author's name and the title it doesn't come up.
There are a lot of scammers on there. I would focus on the auditioning process and not so much on people reaching out. It’s unfortunate that so many people take advantage of others on such a great platform. But, when you have a completed book, it can be quite lucrative. 💰

Hello. Per finished hour is the number of hours in the final length of the recording. And regarding tax info, it depends on your tax situation. A tax ID could be the SSN of an individual, but again it depends on your situation.

I'd love to know what you think about budget microphones and if it's possible to do ACX narration with a samson C01U Pro, or a fifine k669b ? Have you done a video on this before?? I've looked at a lot of samples of these microphones and to me they sound like blue yeti 's, But i'd really like your opinion on it as someone who has done a lot of ACX

I have a great interest in becoming a narrator , I have a lovely voice and I'm really great at speaking and reading fluently, and I'm great at bringing characters to life , it's my niche , However my hold up is the size of my investment into my equipment, can you give me a good idea of what I need to get going with the idea of better investment longterm for equipment. I'm 42 and been raising my children and this is something I would very much enjoy doing long term ,also the income would be great as I have a spinal handicap and unable to stand or sit long periods, but I do not want to obtain disability, I cannot fathom that , anyway as you said you have your own gig , but I'm late to the game lol ,So please any bit of advice from an experienced person as yourself would be such a blessing, Thankyou so much 💖😊

I did have to fill out the tax portion to get paid.
It wouldn't hurt to mention that it helps to have a good voice to begin.
A “good” voice would be an opinion of a particular person. I, nor any single person cannot judge that. One person may hate a voice that someone else loves. So, I encourage anyone to should go for it if they have the passion.

Acx put my book out and the narrator made my novel sound so bad, that I don't even promote it.

Unless I do a blow out. I have to pay upfront pfh all over again to do a blow out. Then I can have my novel re narrated with another narrator.
