    I agree. Went the same route. Tried to make it work in VR cause the immersion is amazing and takes much less space than tripLe monitor. But too much hassle and shortcomings. Weight on head, heat on face, fiddling with controls and charts. So, triples for me. Until we get some proper mixed reality that allows us to bring our physical cockpit into the VR world.

      I agree - the custom building part is also another aspect of enjoyment. Designing and creating the structure was work but fun. At least for me, flipping an actual switch is way more engaging and immersive than trying to do so in VR.

    Hi Chris, I’ve been doing flight sims for 35 years and have tried a variety of approaches. Back in my Navy days I put together a 737 cockpit complete with a full MIP, throttle, CDU, and overhead panel with a three beamer display. Marriage ended that but since then VR came on the scene and the wife has gotten more tolerant. At present I have a full F-18 cockpit bought in sections over several years from Dogfight Boss. I use VR with it in DCS and recognize some of the challenges you mentioned, although doing some prep work in DCS can give you all you need in VR if you set up the kneeboard properly. I’m able to reach all the controls in the Hornet accurately as the cockpit is one to one with VR. I also have a general aviation sim I use to keep up to speed for my PPL. In that I use VR along with Real Sim Gear GPS, Autopilot, Com panel, and a few other gadgets. I use Navagraph both in VR and on an iPad mini. I also have a physical kneeboard for taking notes. Using the HP Reverb G2 without the nose guard allows me to peek when needed, but for the most part my muscle memory is such that I can do things like operate the GPS without much effort. I think there are advantages to both methods, but I’m hooked on VR. I think we’re close to getting the best of both worlds within the next year or two. Mixed reality with passthrough will allow you to have a hardware cockpit while also getting the advantage of immersion that VR offers. XTAL is available now, but it is priced for enterprise use. Vario’s high end headset also offers this kind of solution, but I’m waiting for it to get better and cheaper. This really is the golden age for flight simulation. What we have available as enthusiasts is simply amazing. Enjoy your sim, it rocks!

    • @av8rchris
      @av8rchris  Рік тому

      Thanks! I was just commenting on another post about passthrough getting a bit better would make it more usable! Some of the muscle memory for the garmin units work, its more ipad for foreflight and certain things. Its not bad just not as fluid as I'd like. I do agree this is the golden age of flight sim! Never as a kid would I think I'd see this level of home simulation. I remember a "good" flight was landing with more than 10fps in to JFK in the 737 lol! My average in to JFK was 13 btw and I thought that was great. Here I am pulling 45 in 4k res in a sim that looks near real at most airports.

    @edersondias4517 Рік тому +1

    I was struggling with VR as well, but I got the FSKneeboard and everything changed, as in real life I plan my flight first, take screenshot of every chart I’ll use, the route, the checklists and save it to the folder, once immersed just open it and navigate through the checklists and charts. Ahhh but it’s too much work, well if you’re are a real pilot in a real world you need to check weather, get charts, plan the route, check Notams etc, so it’s the same preparation, it’s more a old school root flight.
    No doubt nowadays we have tables with everything I told in, and no doubt reproducing physically in the cockpit feels more realistic, I would rather having a home cockpit of I could afford, my point here is, with some tools we have it’s making VR users easier and more enjoyable. Great video, one more subscriber !

    When you cut to the Fenix airbus EFB, I thought, "Oh, cool, he's got a ram mount setup for his iPad in his home cockpit. Is that mounted to plexi?" Then I realized it was an in-game shot. Graphics are getting good enough that it's hard to tell sometimes. Great points and I completely agree. I fly in both VR and 2D, and although I love the scale and depth of VR, if I need to write anything down, look at charts, or toggle frequencies with live ATC, I'll stick with 2D.

    • @av8rchris
      @av8rchris  Рік тому

      Hahaha, I do have the ram mount I just dont use it mounted in the home cockpit. I typically go with the knee board mount or occasionally the yoke mount which is what I use in the real thing. Maybe VR/AR gets good enough where we can easily flip between the real world and sim and it actually looks usable to write. Pass through exists today but its just not clear enough for me.

    Your points are spot on. Interacting with physical devices(including kneeboard) is one of the biggest issues for VR flight sim. And personally, FOV of the mainstream HMD is just not enough, and sadly the big companies don't seem to be interested in making advancements in that area. But I still hope the future belongs to VR(use alongside with panels consisting of knobs and often used switches) since it has depth vision and could be much easier and cheaper to set up than multi monitor and full home cockpit.
    As for the knobs and panels, have you tried using them blindly in VR? Some people say that it is actually possible to be adapted to after a while of use, just like one can type blindly, but I don't have the chance to test it myself yet. Positioning the panels as close to the real layout as possible could be helpful.
    Also, have you tried those VR kneeboards that support pen tablets? Such as OpenKneeboard. And a VR mouse emulator called PointCTRL that has 1:1 finger movement mapping to the mouse course; officially it only supports DCS well but the author of the OpenKneeboard has developed a program that makes it better compatible with MSFS2020 and some other games(more details can be found on their respective discord).

    • @av8rchris
      @av8rchris  Рік тому +1

      I've tried using VR with this setup a few times and its not terrible. Running checklists ect is just easier outside of VR, so I guess it really depends what type of flying I'm doing. I haven't tried openkneeboard ect so Ill have check that out and see how it goes. Thanks for watching!

    • @NanaHoshi35
      @NanaHoshi35 Рік тому

      @@av8rchris Yeah interaction outside of VR is always easier for sure. One thing I forgot to mention is that I think PointCTRL can assist in manipulating the switches and knobs in VR since it gives you an indication of where your fingers are in the VR world. If the VR controllers are wearable, it would be much easier for flight sim(I can accept flipping secondary switches or even knobs with such controllers but primary ones should still be those on the full scale panels), but almost no one is making it...I saw someone has mod his WMR controller doing the similar thing(open up the controllers, mount them on the back of the hands; take out the switches and motor then mount on the finger for click), and a Japanese company Shiftall is making something similar but both of them are not the most ideal solution...

  • @capipj

    If you have a homemade cockpit, why not combine both? VR for inmersion plus real placed knobs and switches on your cockpit. Also you can stream your ipad screen to a VR and combine everything.

    • @av8rchris
      @av8rchris  Рік тому +1

      I've done that occasionally. It depends on the aircraft. If I stick to generic piston g1000 aircraft it works out, but sometimes I fly other aircraft where I use custom switch setups which gets clunky. Sometimes the tracking gets messed up too since its close quarters with a lot of reflective surfaces.

    100% agree. I would add that hardware pit is much better for training as well as sharing the flying experience with other family or friends. Twisting thru the alphabet on a G1000 in VR is clunky at best. Purchase a VR headset at Best Buy and return it if you don't like it. That is what i did. Virtual reality VFR flying in MSFS is prtetty cool, but flying IFR on VATSIM did not work for me. VR also not great for youtube trainig videos, way too much head movement. Good luck

      I've been a huge fan of VR flying for VFR stuff for sure. I did my ppl vfr studen cross country in VR in msfs when it first released before I flew it with my instructor, I felt like I was there. Funny you mention sharing the experience, because I've taken a few friends/family "up" in the sim who are afraid of small planes. They loved it. Also a place to let them get an idea of the controls without worrying about crashing IRL!

  • @bignycdon
    @bignycdon Рік тому

    You have a great IFR sim! But flying VFR in VR in MSFS is the best way to fly and gain muscle memory. The visuals are so close that when I fly my plane in real life I got to remind myself I am in a real plane and I can't do some of the crazy stuff I do in the sim. I am a private pilot and own a beechcraft. Flying MSFS IFR in VR gives me the same sensations as being in the soup in real life. I am working on my IFR but not in a rush. Great videos!

      Good point! I mainly made this video from the IFR perspective. When I was going for my PPL and it was student solo XC time, I ran the flight the day before in the sim in VR to catch all the landmarks ect. Next day when I did it with my instructor I felt like I was already there! Enjoy the IFR training!

    I run a pimax 8KX with 4090 , I think the best way currently is using both . I prepare the airplane before take off out of VR then once ready click a programed button to go into VR. I do recommend the 4090 GPU with at least A 12K CPU Class. It allows you to have enough quality resolution to read most of the panel. Still waiting on the Pimax-12K.

    • @av8rchris
      @av8rchris  Рік тому

      I run the 8kx on a 4090 with a i9 12900k and it runs well. The flying portion is nothing short of incredible, trying to read a chart and spin knobs for radios is where it gets annoying. With my reverb G2 it was easier to do both as I did the FOV mod and would look in the nose hole to see what I was grabbing switch wise. Pimax I haven't done anything to so I usually lift it up ect. Ive done some A320 flights with it and its not terrible, its just not as smooth/fluid as Id like.

      @ivaniuk123 Рік тому

      @av8rchris that's awesome. I'm trying to save for a pimax crystal (all reviews seem to indicate that it's the best vr option for sims so far) along with a 4090 and a g1000 nxi so I can do some c172 flying or cirrus sr22. Also I can use it for instrument training. I wish someone could invent a 3rd party add on for fs2020 to allow what the varjo xr 3 mixed reality headset does where it creates a window within VR that automatically detects the kneeboard and automatically displays it in VR. I really really hope that someone is out there working on that because that would be the next natural evolution of VR flight sim.

      Thanks for watching! I've had my eye on the Aero for awhile - how does it compare to the reverb G2? I ended up trying the Pimax 8kx but I'm not a fan. The FOV is nice but it feels distorted and honestly I think its not as sharp as the G2. As for mixed reality 100000%! I sort of frankenstein'd my home cockpit to supporting the 738 including overhead panel. It'd be fantastic to know where my switches are while still maintaining that VR immersion.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow Рік тому

      @@av8rchris the Aero has a beautiful resolution but there are negatives too:
      1- no controllers included although I have become used to a Kensington Trackball on a knee board and I can use the scroll ring to turn knobs. Not great but at least I can find my knee instead of groping for my mouse.
      2- I think the graphics are a bit washed out and forget dark night as the ambient backlight gives a hazy look in the really dark areas. The G2 is better on these points,
      3- I really hated spending $400 for two tracking base stations. My original Oculus CV had lighthouses but the RiftS and G2 with inside out tracking spoiled me… I also dislike having to run SteamVR just to get head tracking.
      4-Finally, and this may just be me, or my misshapen head, but for me the G2 is much more comfortable to wear.
      5- oh and you need a beastly computer to get good performance but not much more than the G2
      All that said, the image resolution is the best I’ve experienced by far. Zero screen door and close to HD monitor rez. Like a beautiful woman, sometimes you are willing to overlook a few shortcomings if they are stunning enough😀
