A tour of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre - 5 INSANE facts

  • Most videos you see about the Church of the Holy Sepulchre focus on two places found inside the church: the Golgotha (or “calvary”), where Jesus was crucified, and the Tomb of Jesus, where his body was buried and resurrected. These sites are so important that everyone spends all their time talking about them. But the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is a fascinating place and there are some unbelievable things you ought to know. And that’s what I’m going to show you in this video. Let's get going.
    1. The Christian denominations that run the church
    2. Who holds the keys of the church?
    3. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre has a village on the roof
    4. Holy Fire ceremony
    5. One of the first churches

Thanks for posting this. Around the year 2000, i lived for 3 years in the Old City, and several times, I let myself lock in the Church at night, in an attempt to sense the essence of the location with only a few priests, nuns in the deepest prayers. These moments, still are amongst my most cherished life memories.

@@radiance65 Actually, at that time, I considered myself more secular than a believing Christian. So, I was there to observe/tourist rather than to ''meditate'' or pray. The Church itself has many distinct and all different praying spaces to accommodate the greatest Christian denominations.
Each space has a distinct vibration and feel. There are 3 different floor levels. There is no architectural or spiritual harmony, but rather the opposite. At night, the vibes are much more pronounced than by day. Everything is obscure or dark.
There are a few authentic hidden side niches that most tourists overlook which are just thousands of years old tombs cut out in limestone rocks. These places were especially dark and heavy . I only managed to stay there a few minutes although, in daytime, these were my favorite little quiet spaces in a church mostly brimming with visitors and pilgrims.
A few candles only lit specific places in the church. They created long and spooky shadows. That Church has been visited for over 1700 years of history by millions and millions of people and has been revered as the most authentic relic of Christianity.
The Church has inspired and incorporated, effectively witnessed all the upheavals and glory times of Christianity. Countless historic giants have knelt or prayed there....No wonder,, there is a deeply impressive and even palpable ''historical'' spirit living in the Church.
Few people enter that Church with indifference, no matter their religious beliefs.
I rested for a while, lying flat on the cold tomb of a crusader, serving as a rude and ice-cold bench. Even in the Middle East, the nights in the Church are rather cold. After my initial religious curiosity was ''satisfied'', I started feeling less and less comfortable, until even strange inner fears gradually popped up. As if i was being present in a ''forbidden '' place, not really worthy to be there. I seem to have felt darker forces rather than soothing higher ones. As if i was continually ''being watched by invisible eyes that read my sceptical thoughts and heart.
At one point, I watched two old and small Russian orthodox nuns descend to the deepest level where the wife of Emperor Constantine found the relics of the holy Cross. After more than an hour, they did not come back, so I descended to the lowest level -without any exit, only to find it empty. I was absolutely sure that they did not pass me whilst going up again. Then, I found on the stairs a lost orthodox prayer bracelet made of black wool and cheap green plastic beads. I picked it up and took it with me as a ''souvenir''. (Months later, the bracelet would give me very unpleasant kind of strong electrical charges by touching it. I still have the bracelet in my room, now having become ''my beloved personal memory and relic'' from that memorable night.)
The time in the Church seemed to last an eternity. Around 4 o clock, It became almost unbearable. Now, the Church doors are locked and there is no way to escape. Around 5 o clock, the Muslim Guardian of the Church having the keys came to open d the huge doors. Immediately, I sneaked out past him into the fresh dark morning of a weirdly silent old Jerusalem.
Now, twenty years later, and by studying the lives of many Christian Saints, I become more and more a believing Christian again, and I now have regretted not having passed one night in the Church as a believer. (I spent 3 times in this Church) . Now, living in Spain, the desire grows to return one last time to the Middle East but now as a real pilgrim and revisit all the places related to Christianity with a profound connection.
That is to say, before the so much prophesied End Times begin. By every passing year, my chances for doing so diminish.
Thanks for your question, I allowed me to put on paper one of my (religious) life's most profound experiences.

@@jphalsberghe1 Wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experiences in such vivid detail. I was trembling inside as I read your words.
I am here in Jerusalem on a three week visit but would not have the nerve to do what you did, although I probably would not have hesitated as an unbeliever 🤔
I am going to go to the church very early in the morning though, to be there as they open up. That's as far as my courage goes.
Before I came on this trip, I prayed for a deeper appreciation of the spiritual sites I will visit.
Your words are part of my answer to that prayer. Thank you sooo much. 🙏🏻❤️

      @@radiance65 Dear friend, few people go to Jerusalem on their own merits. Most are ''called'' to the city, and then, the city will transform them, sooner or later. Jerusalem has a ''special vibe'' as you probably already discovered. Visit the small adjacent tombs, just after the Tomb of Christ, and in front of a small Coptic-like prayer stand. You ll see a simple entrance. You may even find a treasure..(-;

Muslims used to have honor back in the day and protected our Holy Sites. Then the Wahhabis and Pan-Islamic terrorists came and started destroying everything. It is a shame, but I am glad honorable Muslims were in charge of Jerusalem and kept our Holy Sites in tact and still do today, continuing their family's legacy. May God bless them and forgive their sins.

Thank you for doing this video. Our family have always wanted to go to Jerusalem. One day we hope to be able to go. It is so nice that you took us through this church.

Joining 206 Tours last Feb 2017, our grp of 33 people were privileged to say mass inside the edicule at 5:00 am... it was really an experience to walk around the Christian quarter from Notre Dame Hotel at 4:30 am.to say the mass at 5am. We waited outside and witnessed the opening of the main door...thank you for showing us the underground churches... i can visualize the place now as a hill.

Reminded me of our visit to this church in 2012. It was real crowded when we were there, so it was great to see this video which showed us even more than what we saw when we visited. I remember visiting the lowest floor and did not know at the time that this is where the actual cross was found. Our trip to Israel was memorable especially since we are Bible students and followers of Jesus Christ. Thanks for a great job on this video. I look forward to more of your work

Great information . Thank you. I visited in May 2019 and it was so crowded. It was amazing to see it empty. I hope to visit Israel again but please keep the videos coming.
