The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the holiest and special sites in Christianity. Located in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, the church is home to two of the holiest sites in Christianity - the site where Jesus was crucified, known as Calvary, and the tomb where Jesus was buried and then resurrected. Today, the tomb is enclosed by a shrine called the Aedicula. The final four Stations of the Cross, or Via Dolorosa, are also located inside the church.
The New Testament tells that Jesus was crucified at Golgotha, “the place of the skull”. This is commonly thought to be an area of stone quarries outside the city’s walls at the time. Around a decade after Jesus’s crucifixion, a third wall was built to enclose the area of his execution and burial within the city. This provides validation for the Holy Sepulchre’s location inside the today’s Old City of Jerusalem.
After he had a vision of a cross in the sky in 312 AD, Constantine the Great converted to Christianity and sent his mother, Empress Helena, to Jerusalem in search of Jesus’s tomb. She found a relic of the cross near a tomb, leading her to believe she had found Calvary. In 326 AD, Constantine ordered a church built at the site. All the soil and debris over the centuries was removed from the cave, revealing a rock-cut tomb identified as the burial site of Jesus.
The Church now stands over the two holy sites. The great basilica or Martyrium encloses the traditional site of Calvary in one corner. Across the way, the Anastasis (“Resurrection”) encloses the cave tomb of Jesus’s burial. The church was finally consecrated on September 13, 335 AD. The wooden doors of the church’s main entrance are still the original doors from 326 AD. This puts into perspective the ancient grandeur of this holy church.

    My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered licensed tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water, and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many-faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be implanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Thank you, again, Izaak. That helps so much. It is hard to visualize what used to be, under the modern landscape of the city. That may seem sad, but Jesus loved people. He knew that life would be hard; He knew that we would have to make a living and have a place to live. He wants us all to have a home and food to eat, to work at things that matter and help one another. I keep praying and looking for work. He knew that we would remember Him, even if the places no longer look as they did. I am so proud of you studying and earning your masters degree in this wonderful history. I wish you could be a professor, In a way, you already are, online. My masters degree was affordable, but my doctorate led to >$80K in student loan debt. I wish I could pay it back before I die, but I am almost sixty. Be safe.

@@zahishaked May I send you a chapter out of my book on St. Nicholas who visited the church "Holy Sion" or “Church of the Apostles” in AD 267? I've watched videos on "The First Church" in Jerusalem but I am unsure as to whether it was the same as that known as Holy Sion that was built by the second bishop of Jerusalem, Simeon, after Titus' destruction. I think this “Holy Sion” church was a standing structure, not a cave or grotto, and I think it might have been built over “The First Church” which is a short distance from where the Upper Room is celebrated as having been today. Do you perhaps have an email address that I may use? The chapter isn't very long but I think that might be the best way for you, with your first-hand knowledge of Jerusalem, to decipher the information. Thank you! Again...I love your videos and share them with friends.

    I have two questions.
1-I couldn’t make out where are you said this simulation is. What is the name of the building where are you filmed this and where is it located?
2-I thought I heard thunder while you were videoing this. Was that thunder I heard or was it a sound effect inside the building where you were filming?
We visited the garden tomb when we were in Jerusalem. We were told by our tour leader that the church of the Holy Sepulchre was overcrowded (before COVID), dark and dismal. She didn’t think it was a good place to reflect upon the crucifixion and resurrection. Thank you for the explanation of that area of the Church and it’s history.

@@simko8665 The Apostle Paul wrote that he collected testimony from eyewitnesses. He was a lawyer trained to collect evidence for trial before judges. A modern book called *Cold Case Christianity* was written by a retired detective who worked on cold case files for a major police department in California. (Cold cases are crimes that weren't solved within a year or more; cold case detectives specialize in tracking down old evidence to solve those crimes). Another resource is the Shroud of Turin, which has been forensically examined. Don't be quick to dismiss it because an atheist who wanted very badly to disprove that Jesus existed played politics and possibly corruption to mishandle the evidence sent to the radiocarbon dating lab. There's a documentary on that. The important thing is that forensic medical examiners studied the image on the shroud and determined that the man depicted in the image was crucified and died.

    Zahi Shaked
is touring what he has been told is the tomb of a Herod?
very confusing, since there are over 40 Herods buried in Israel, and other places.
Herod is a title like a king, or pharaoh,
Cleopatra is a title like a queen,
there are hundreds of Ancient Egyptian Cleopatras.
    Josephus 70 A.D.
makes reference to at least, about 40 different, Herod's that were related by cross marriages of the Herod's,
all competing for power, and dominion,
in 70 A.D., with many before including Herod the Great buried at Herodium
which lay at the distance from Jericho, where he died, of 200 stadia or furlongs.
So this tomb of some other Herod, was not Herod the Great.
    There is mention by
    Josephus
    of other Herod's
Josephus page 418, Chapter V paragraph 2.) ... ; but now Herod, king of Chalcis, removed Joseph, the son of Camydus, from the high priesthood, and made Ananias, the son of Nebedeus, his successor; and now it was that Cumanus came as successor to Tiberius Alexander; as also that Herod, brother of Agrippa the great king, departed this life, in the eighth year of
    the reign of Claudius Caesar.
    End of Quote.
Hence we must surmise that some Herod or his family, was buried at this Golgotha Site, of the Catholics,
    there are other Golgotha Sites.
The Golgotha Site of the Protestants,
located near what has been called the Garden Tomb.
This tomb that Zahi is touring in this Virtual Tour of
Church Of The Holy Sepulcher ( the Catholic Golgotha )
is located West of the Western Wall of The Temple, or West of the Dome of the Rock, a Muslim building covering the
rock of Isaacs near Sacrifice by Abraham.
