Your videos are very helpful. I was in Israel in 2008 on a Birthright tour and I'm going back in 2 weeks! I definitely wish I did what you reminded people regarding the budget on Shabbat. I ended up paying a lot for a taxi to go to the airport not realizing that buses shut down. I also figure to save money to be mindful of where I'm staying on Shabbat to see if I'm in an area where there are things still open walking distance of where I'm staying. I was going to go to a couple of places on my own as well but realized it's better to get a public tour to get information and details about what I'm seeing that I may not get necessarily from a book. As a budget traveler daytours in Israel were a lot more reasonable than I thought.

That’s a good point...you don’t travel to save money. The experiences that flood your memory later on are sometimes a bit pricey, but worth the cost. I travel to connect with people and places. Then I understand in a richer way. In Israel, I want to experience the places of the Old and New Testament. I want to understand my Savior on a different level, and get to see the same sites viewed by Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Lehi, Nephi, Ruth and a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. These thoughtful videos help with my planning. Thank you!

I have just returned from my second trip to Israel. My first trip was in 2016, and on a tour, which was great! On this second trip, I was on my own, and I ended up hiring a car from Haifa onwards, and that was the best thing i did. From there I drove to all the places I didn't see in 2016. I really enjoyed my time and spent my last week in Jerusalem and went on 2 Sandeman tours( half day walking tours) and one full day with Ein Harim tours) to Jericho and Bethlehem. I visited friends in a kibbutz and spent 5 days there. I am hoping to return to Israel in 2020 , hiring a car and doing Airbnb and visiting the same friends .

You are the first guy from Tel Aviv who is polite while talking, I have been so sad after my experience in Tel Aviv, back since 3 weeks... My beginning was asking politely how to get to the beach with my clear Italian accent and I have been insulted about WWII, then in Jaffa same by a guy selling bracelet in the street, finally the taxi driver misunderstood my target (Carmel market, even shown in a map) I asked him to stop the taxi and let me leave, I was calling the police due to his yelling and I was totally afraid, I even left money on the seat, but as I was leaving the car he spat against me. Finally I asked to the lady at the tourist office of Jaffa about the prison of Eichmann because it has an historical value and she replied that I couldn't have honoured his prison because now it's Setai hotel... I wasn't certainly going to honour a man who did those crimes, but she didn't care and to be honest I had not to explain her my reasons. So, it is nice to watch someone like you :) thanks!

I stayed in a really cheap hotel, but I could walk from the hotel to the old city easily. The bad part about it was how the bathroom was built. There was no wall around the shower, so you had to squeegee up the water after the shower. The carpet was gross. The furniture was in bad shape, but they did serve a good breakfast in the morning at $75 a night. I thought I was too old for a hostel. Next time I will probably stay in a nicer hotel. I was definitely seeing Israel on a budget.

I was just in Israel, in November of 2018 for 15 days landed on a Friday the longest 14 hour non stop flight I was ever on and we stayed at the New Market Hotel they picked us up at no cost we stayed the night then we were able to get a shuttle on Saturday to go to Jerusalem we stayed at the Muslim Quarter by the Damascus gate stayed at the Austrian Hostel only because most if not all of the Hotels were full for the month of November The Austrian Hostel was a great place to stay because you felt like you were behind a fortress, as an american I felt more safer in the Muslim Quarter than outside the walls of Jerusalem but that's just me, just have to get use to the Muslim 5 prayers a days over the load speakers because their is a mosque across the Austrian Hostel then rented a car and as an american driving in Israel is like driving the Indy 500 race track I did not once see a speed limit sign it was like you were fighting your way around the streets but I made it to Tiberius with only one stop at a check point which everyone was armed to the teeth just as you pass the big red sign that says forbidding zone for all Israelis citizens. We rented an apartment in Tiberius for 3 nights on the Sea of Galilee enjoyed the trip but My questions is was November a bad time to travel to Israel to get a Hotel ? because it seemed like everything was all booked up for that month.

    • @Travelingisraelinfo
      @Travelingisraelinfo  6 років тому +2

Hey, I am actually writing now a post about it! it is not finished and there are many spelling mistakes, but here it is:
      Winter vacation in Israel
If you are planning to traveling to Israel between October and March this post is for you!
Winter is, in my opinion, the best time to visit Israel. The prices are lower, the winter is not so cold and it is low season so the important site are less crowded (like Masada and the Church of the Holy Sepluchre).
If you just starting to plan your trip, I highly recommend to first read the post or see the video about itinerary in Israel so you will have a general idea of what Israel has to offer.
Winter vacation tip #1 - Go South
My first tip is spend more time in the south, in the desert. For many years the Israeli ministry of truism market Israel itself as a destination for pilgrims, as most of the sites that are holy for Christians are in Israel. In the last years the focus is about Tel Aviv and Jerusalem as a short city break vacation or weekend, and I really hope that the next thing will to put the desert as a destination. Good things are alreally going on but overseas tourists don’t get the information. The Israeli desert is the perfect winter destination, a safe desert with good hiking and bicycle, jeep trails. If it is your second time in Israel and you want mainly stay in the south check if there are low cost flights to Ovda, Eilat or Ramon airports
Winter vacation tip #2 - Go to the Judeaen Desert
If you come only for a couple of days and you stay in Jerusalem you can always take a day tour to the Judean Desert (also possible from Tel Aviv). Israel is tiny and unbelievably diverse. Half an hour drive east from Jerusalem and you are in the Judean Desert. You can even reach Masada the Dead Sea and Ein Gedi in one day, and this is a very popular day tour from Jerusalem, You can even skip Masada and have a relax day in the northern beaches of the Dead Sea. Two important sites are Qumran and Qauser al yahud.
If you like hiking then go to Ein Gedi National park. You get there a good map and can go on a 10-15 Km hikes. Vadi Kelt, half way between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea is another option for a beautiful hike.
I have written quite a lot about the Judean Desert here are some related posts -
Winter vacation tip #3 - Go to the Negev
Half of Israel is the desert Negev. There is a lot to see and do but if you are starting to plan your trip than make sure to visit Sede Boker and\or Mitzpe Ramon.
Sede Boker is a Kibbutz where Ben Gurion, our first prime minister, lived and where he is buried. his burial site is a national park next to the kibbutz on a cliff watching the Zim basin. In that area there are some great walking, cycling and jeep tours you can take. Ein Akev is a small spring and pool you can visit. Ein Avdat National park is inside the Zin Bassin is another popular short hike. 15 Km to the south there is Avdat National Park (not to be confused with Ein Ovdat) a Nabatian ruin.
Mitzpe Ramon is a town that lies on the cliffs of the Ramon crator. Although it is a small twon, with only 5,000 residence, and although it’s socio-economic status is below the national average, it is the place I recommend the most. First of all, the Ramon Crater is one of my favorate places in Israel, and the views are spectacular, the second, practical reason why I like it so much, is that it has it all, Butique Hotel right on the cliff? Private geep tour? Budget accommodation? Free Walking trails? You come with a car or relay on public transportation? Fine restartans? Cheap supermarket? In Mitype Ramon you have it all. And unlike Eilat (the next tip) that is a touristic city, and you fill it immediately, In Mitzpe Ramon tourism is a new, fresh, still developing young business.
Winter vacation tip #4 - Go to Eilat (or, at least, land there)
I think that like many Israeli tour guides, I don’t like Eilat and usually don’t advise people to go there. There are cheaper, nicer, vacation destinations in Europe. And even if you cross the border to the Jordanian side, to Aqaba, of to the Egyptian side, to Sinai, the prices are half. In summer and on Jewish holidays I will defiantly not go there but maybe I am a little too harsh on the city. Many of my nun tour guide Israeli friends like the city - The hotels that are not on the first line to the beach are much cheaper (I like thi), The Eilat mountains are amazing with many trails and you have the red see where you can go diving, snorkeling and swimming also in December.
And the big advantage is that there are many low cost flights to Eilat Airport (with is in the city), Ovda Airport (with is a military base 20 Km north of Eilat) and the New Ramon Airport (that will probably open at the end of 2019 and replace the other two). If it is your second visit to Israel and you have seen the must site or if you come in winter and just want to stay in the desert and save lots of money on the flight, it is worth to check it out.
Winter vacation tip #5 - Christmas
Although winter is low session, around Christmas, there is a pick of tourists (and prices) as many have vacation and want to visit the holy places. If you plan to visit at this time make sure to book well in advance.
Jerusalem and Bet Lehem are very full, if you don’t come especially for religious reasons (Corrine, there is probably a better words than religious reasons), try not to be in Jerusalem around the 24th of December.
The only major Jewish holiday in winter is Chanuka. So prices and also be higher around this time. You can check in this post when is the next chanuka is.
Winter vacation tip #6 - March (spring)
If I would have to choose the best time to visit Israel than I would say March (but before Pessach). There is still a chance or rain but the tempters are mostly over 20, every thing is green and blooming, the desert is hot but not too hot and the rivers and pools are as full as they will be. It is the best time for hiking all over Israel. If you want to lay on the beach your whole vacation than wait another month or two.
Winter vacation tip #7 - the down side
I always prefer winter in Israel but, like anything else, there are also down sides, and things that are good to know and plan.
As I said it is not really cold most of the time, the average temperature in Tel Aviv in January is around 20C and at day time, T shirt will be just fine, but it can get very cold in high places. Jerusalem is 800 meter high and even Mitzpe Ramon, is 800 meters high and at night it gets really cold and can even snow. So you do need to bring suitable closing.
Another thing to take in account is that it doesn’t rain often, but when it does, it is usually very strong rain. You can’t be outside without getting soaked. So if there is a high chance of rain make sure to be inside.
If you go on hiking there are two important things you need to take in considerations - water and flash floods.
I have seen so many travelers that go to long hikes with only one bottle of water. You need at least 4.5 liters for a day and more if you sleep outside where there are no places to fill water.
Usually in the beginning and end of winter, so October and March there are flash floods in the desert wadis (wadi is a dry riverbed, or a valley, that only when it rains water flow there).
Last year 10 Israeli children died in a flash flood and this year 20 Jordanian children died the same way so you will probably will be warned if you go to places that it can happen, but it is important to know what it is and to be aware. You can’t know when its coming because it doesn’t need to rain where you are. Usually it rains in the mountains around Jerusalem and an hour later there are flash floods in the Judean Desert wadis that drains all the water.

@@Travelingisraelinfo Hi Oremn thank you so much for this recommendations. That's very generous of you. To return the favour I've fixed the spelling errors for you. I hope you don't mind it.
Winter vacation tip #1 - Go South
My first tip is spend more time in the south, in the desert. For many years the Israeli ministry of tourism market Israel itself as a destination for pilgrims, as most of the sites that are holy for Christians are in Israel. In the last years the focus is about Tel Aviv and Jerusalem as a short city break vacation or weekend, and I really hope that the next thing will to put the desert as a destination. Good things are already going on but overseas tourists don’t get the information. The Israeli desert is the perfect winter destination, a safe desert with good hiking and bicycle, jeep trails. If it is your second time in Israel and you want mainly stay in the south check if there are low cost flights to Ovda, Eilat or Ramon airports
Winter vacation tip #2 - Go to the Judaean Desert
If you come only for a couple of days and you stay in Jerusalem you can always take a day tour to the Judean Desert (also possible from Tel Aviv). Israel is tiny and unbelievably diverse. Half an hour drive east from Jerusalem and you are in the Judean Desert. You can even reach Masada the Dead Sea and Ein Gedi in one day, and this is a very popular day tour from Jerusalem, You can even skip Masada and have a relax day in the northern beaches of the Dead Sea. Two important sites are Qumran and Qasr al yahud.
If you like hiking then go to Ein Gedi National park. You get there a good map and can go on a 10-15 Km hikes. Wadi Qelt, half way between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea is another option for a beautiful hike. I have written quite a lot about the Judean Desert here are some related posts -
Winter vacation tip #3 - Go to the Negev Half of Israel is the desert Negev. 15 Km to the south there is Avdat National Park (not to be confused with Ein Avdat) a Nabatian ruin. Mitzpe Ramon is a town that lies on the cliffs of the Ramon crater. Although it is a small town, with only 5,000 residence, and although it’s socio-economic status is below the national average, it is the place I recommend the most. First of all, the Ramon Crater is one of my favorite places in Israel, and the views are spectacular, the second, practical reason why I like it so much, is that it has it all, Boutique Hotel right on the cliff? Private jeep tour? Budget accommodation? Free Walking trails? You come with a car or relay on public transportation? Fine restaurants? Cheap supermarket? In Mitzpe Ramon you have it all. And unlike Eilat (the next tip) that is a touristic city, and you fill it immediately, In Mitzpe Ramon tourism is a new, fresh, still developing young business.
Winter vacation tip #4 - Go to Eilat (or, at least, land there). In summer and on Jewish holidays I will definitely not go there but maybe I am a little too harsh on the city. Many of my nun tour guide Israeli friends like the city - The hotels that are not on the first line to the beach are much cheaper (I like thi), The Eilat mountains are amazing with many trails and you have the red see where you can go diving, snorkeling and swimming also in December.

hi, do you have any tips for female travelers, how to dress in tel aviv & jeruzalem? How to act... What's considered polite... What you should do or don't do as a solo female traveler?

    • @Travelingisraelinfo
      @Travelingisraelinfo  7 років тому +9

Hey, there are many women that travel alone in Israel. Tel Aviv is very liberal, you can wear what you want. In Jerusalem, in the Old city where there are many holy sites a long dress is the best option. I don't know where you are from and how old you are, so it is hard for me to give specific tips, but in the West bank and in Arabic areas it is less commen to see a woman going by herself. You can always say that you boyfriend\husband is comming soon, and if men bother you, don't be polite and don't try to be nice (In Israel or anywhere else).

Abraham hostel got a good rep for a reason. I have only been to the Jerusalem one, and saw the Tel Avivian one from the outside (easy stroll from Rothschild blv). The private rooms will probably be more relevant for you. The Jerusalem one is cheap, the TLV- not so much.

@@Travelingisraelinfo Thanks for your reply, do you mean I need to joint a local group tour to navigate the famous sites? I always traveled on my own by doing a lot of research when planning a trip. My biggest concern is the current political news, I think I can plan it for 3rd week of June 2020. I do wish to see a little of Palestine just to cross it off my bucket list. If it's still political unstable, I will go to my next bucket list country.
