    Scammers and also some really kind people. When I was in Jerusalem by myself years ago, on a very tight budget, I was walking all over the Jewish quarter, and it was hot. I was dragging my suitcase with me, trying to find a place to stay for the night, and was getting very tired. I wasn't used to walking so much. I went by a pizza store, and the owner came out, told me to sit down at a shady table, and gave me a big slice of pizza and something to drink with no charge. It was beautiful! I saw him later helping out another tourist in a similar situation.

    As a rule of thumb, no matter which country I am visiting, I stay away from restaurants, cafes and shops that are filled with tourists. I always go to the places that I see lots of locals at. 90% of the time you wont get scammed. I am also terrible at negotiating prices, so if a store doesn't have items with a price on them, I won't even consider asking what the price is and just move on.

    I think one of the biggest scams is actually the taxis. They will offer you a flat fee without the meter. Always request the meter. Generally they charge 2x the price of the meter.

    I had experience with highly aggressive scammers there, too! In fact, the two of them, 2 arabic salesmen, followed and threatened me. That day I was a woman on her own. I spotted a group of Border Police men and joined them. That was so effective!!! The scammers were really scared of the guys, left me alone and returned to their shop. That's my tip for other tourists: the heavy armed guys in the pretty grey uniforms are your friends. ;)

    A tip from me. Some of the shops in the old city are very deep. Don’t enter so far that you are cut off from the street. It’s easier for them to pressure you to buy.

    • @markrcca5329
      @markrcca5329 Рік тому +4

      I never enter those shops. It's like entering the office in Monty Python sketch "I wish to have an argument" - you're just going in for an ridiculous discussion. If I want to see stuff I go to a museum. If I want to buy stuff, I just do it online. I can "deal" with high-pressure salesmen, but after a while it just drains my energy.

    Seems it is common in the Middle East. I can say "no" to people, but I hate to constantly have to say "no" to an endless stream of people trying to sell me stuff. After a while I just avoid such places, because it just drains my energy to have to do that all the time, and I'm not enjoying where I am anymore.. Those middle-Eastern markets would be beautiful places to visit, but my mouth gets dry from saying "no thank you" all the time LOL.

    My husband and I ordered fresh juice at a stand in the old city. I handed the guy ₪100 expecting to get at least ₪70 back and the guy never handed me my change. My husband wasn’t paying attention and he started to walk away… It was my birthday and I just didn’t feel like arguing… I wish I had at least taken a picture of the stall and gotten it’s approximate address to save others the trouble.
    I believe we were in the Arab Quarter and I don’t remember any price list.
    Another thing that happens is that shopkeepers will come out and call you “beautiful, “my angel,” etc. in an attempt to lure you into their shops. I’ve had them take me by the hand and try to flirt up a storm just for the sale 🤦🏻‍♀️

      Usually, when I am quoted an absurd price, I haggle. Sometimes you can bargain vendors down to a sixth of the first price quoted. Since many stores in the shuk carry the same merchandize, never even engage, until you've surveyed several stores. And, starting to walk out, can often bring the price down quickly. I usually start out in English, then switch to Hebrew, as the haggling becomes more intense.

    You talk about the restaurants in the old city, but when you start w Jaffa gate a few minutes later, the big falafel shawarma place you show is one of the more guilty parties as far as restaurant scams go. They're the one there were several news stories on just before corona took over. Alway look at receipts before leaving, some places count on you needing to be on schedule and in a hurry, and wll hit an extra number "by accident"

      Sir, there is an opinion that the wall has been built, not outside the perimeter, but inside the perimeter. Since most people have been exposed to the dead, and have not been purified by the red heifer, they cannot enter temple mount. Therefore, touching the wall can result in entering temple mount on in an impure state.
      Secondly, there is also a source that the shechina has never left the western wall. Therefore for that specific area of the wall has maintained It’s popularity as the place to go pray.
      Nice video.

    Thanks again. I just refer to a small issue you mention at the end:"be a good person". Let's not forget, to be a person at all means to forget and to know that you don't know, what you are. "I do more good than bad" won't work, precisely because the picture of the coin is true. The small blessings like the one I get liking the video, where do they come from? May where it comes from be with you. Tschüß! 😊

    We´ll have your app, when we, hopefully, return to Jerusalem! In the meantime, I really enjoy your videos and your sense for well tempered irony. Thing is, that tourist got to accept that traders are busy people trying to make money - and no one of them becomes rich. If they approach the tourist in a not totally honest friendliness, that´s business, not an offense. It´s up to the tourist to react correctly, with consequent and nevertheless polite behaviour - and that holds for any mediterranean country (maybe even for Berlin, you might be correct, Oren). Never take any attempt of scamming personal. Say "No", stay cool, be kind. That will do.

    • @user-oo8tx1qe1m
      @user-oo8tx1qe1m 11 місяців тому

      @@lorraineprahm5461 Dear Lorraine, are you asking Oren or me? Quand a moi, it´s easy: I am a German. Regarding Oren, I think he spent quite a time here; but you´ll ask better him. Concerning your second question: For the jewish side I can only say, that as a German you get the feeling, that the Israeli are welcoming you. They suppose - in general - that a German tourist coming to their country will probably hold some sympathies for them. Probably, there might be some Israeli which would prefer not t meet Germans in their country. Personally, my wife, our sons and me never met such people; or, at least, they were too polite. And one of our sons spent a year in Israel, doing some social service there. For the German side: Most of us feel some sympathy with the jews in general and Israel in special. This holds especially with the conservative people, the right wingers, the ordinary chaps. For Israel, with his open patriotism is, seen from European perspective, a conservative, a right wingers country. The lefties have some problems with Israel, as some of them regard Israel as "US imperialists big stick"; nonsense, of course. Others lefties might critize Israel for being militaristic or patriotic; what endears the country to the right, make it difficult for the left. If you ask for antisemitism: This is rather rare among the Germans. For obvious reasons. Some people might have some prejudices (money making and that stuff), but in general: Rather not. A different matter it is with the immigrants from Arabia. Many of them are devoted antisemites; if you see news in TV regarding antisemitic rallyes in germany, it´s worth looking; probably, you wont find many Germans at such occasions.

Growing up in both New York and Colorado I never really appreciated how massive this country is. I mean Germany is the size of Montana, Israel the size of New Jersey and Japan the size of California. if ever in Colorado just ask and I'll give you recommendations for the most beautiful parts of this state plus which ski resorts id recommend.

      I am leaving this coming Monday for 3 1/2 weeks. With all the mass shootings happening here in the US, as well as increases in anti-Semitic attacks, I don't feel any more unsafe in Israel than here in Maryland. I have a pretty good idea where to and not to go, but then I have visited Israel many times.
      The only time I felt that my life was endangered was one time in Haifa. I was in the back seat of a taxi going downhill on a winding road, and the driver didn't seem to think holding onto the wheel was that important. Other than that, I feel safe.

    Thanks for making these videos! While I agree with some and disagree with some of your political videos the tourism information is helpful!
    Quick question. I’m looking at going to Jerusalem next year but concerned about coming and going to Israel through Lebanon.
    I am a white, blue eyed American but my girlfriends who I’m traveling with is of Lebanese descent and has an Arab name.
    We will be coming from/going to Lebanon and have heard we may have problems at the border/checkpoints from the Israeli police or military.
    Is there truth to this? Any tips on setting up the flights/travel plans to minimize issues? Thanks!
