- TEEN TIME - Dance Contest
This one's a Teen Time dance contest,
judged by "The Four Guys,"
with dancing to "Boogaloo Down Broadway"
by the Fantastic Johnny C!
and a Strawberry Alarmclock LP for the winners.
Hosted by Del Curtis, this episode of Teen Time aired sometime around 1968 on WSTV-TV (now WTOV) in Steubenville, Ohio.
Show intro:
"Ladies and Gentlemen, for the next hour,
you are "IN" with TEEN TIME!
From the Satellite Discoteque,
high atop Altamont Hill,
it's TEEN TIME!
And here's Mr. Teen Scene...
Del Curtis!" - Розваги
That's my Dad in the saddle shoes!!!!! You go Mike!!!!!!! And you still shake your head when you dance! I love it!
I never knew they made Saddle Shoes for guys.
OMG! The blonde is my mom! Good times Barnesville. Good times.
we need bring back dancing tv shows like this in todays society that would be cool.
Dancing to Justin Bieber and any garbage Euro Beat music simply wouldn’t cut it!
Good point.@@HemiVic
If that's really your dad in this video I just love it! How fun to see your dad on here, how he was back then.....He's dancing great...I'm his age, this was how it was done....Congrats on having a rockin Dad.
I’m really impressed that the audience was integrated and that it was broadcast on television.
too bad, many teens today think their grandparents have a shitty life but actually it's our life that is shitty and their lives were cooler.
Very true
It wasn’t 1968, it would have been Stan Scott hosting. I was cameraman and audio man from 1965 through 1969.
Sally Johnson was jammin'! She had pure confidence as she was dancing. He partner was good too, but for me it was all about her. She was smooth with her moves.
Absolutely
2021
Your MOM!!!! That is just incredible!!! I know, I am eavesdropping , but I HAD to stop here and say WHAT a SMALL WORLD! Thanks to UA-cam... that is awesome!
If I lived in Steubenville in 1968, I would be in love with Sally Johnson.
1968....and nearly every American classroom had at least one girl named LINDA.
+brownies4you No more Lindas today.
@@rascal211 not as many as there used to be, but a few are still around..
Oh wow! This was uncomfortable to watch, yet entertaining. Before social media and the internet, where the only way one could see people dance other than physically going to a club or school dance, or at home ,TV was the only way to witness this entertainment.
The Music, the bands, and the fashion back then is so much better than anything today!
PRICELESS!! This show was the most.
It was a simpler, safer, happier and carefree time. We never worried about whether or not we would make it home if we walked three blocks from our house. Teens were rebellious (they always are), but they weren't as violent as teens are today. We respected the law, and for the most part, respected our parents. I am happy that I was a teen when it was fun to be a teen.
They were ALL good..now grandparents!!!
made me smile.
The latter 1960's,to be exact. Thanks alot for posting.
Around 1968
Thanks so much for posting this. For years I was trying to find this Song and I did thanks to you. When I heard this Song when I was a Kid, I thought it was Sam & Dave. : - )
I'm from this generation-groovy-where did all that time go-the little dude has swagger.
wow every guy had suit an tie on
+james cashell In the early days of American Bandstand while it was still broadcasted in Philadelphia, PA., many of the Guys wore Suits & Ties. Some just wore it as a rule but most were students at a Catholic High School.
Ohio holds a very special part in Pop Music & Culture. It is home of Alan Freed, The Rock 'N Roll Hall Of Fame Museum not to mention the Birthplace of 98 Degrees and it's also the Birthplace of The O'Jays who made Their Bones in Philly as well as Late Comedian Richard Pryor.
The couple in the back have it nailed!!!We have a winner!!!
Cute kids What a time to be young
I'm a grandma that used to do the boogaloo but to faster music! The winning girl does it correctly and the young boy has the best foot work but his arm movement isn't right. Most of the boogaloo videos on youtube are not doing the dance correctly. This is the first one I found that is correct but faster music helps you move your shoulders more. It's more of an upper body movement dance than footwork except for sliding your feet. It's not an easy dance to learn.
I agree I'm 65 and danced to this music many times, while this is not the greatest dancing it is the only accurate example I have found of the way kids danced in the late 60's. The brunette who wins is clearly the best.
+homedecorable - I've looked at maybe 10 different "Boogaloo" videos, but they're all the "newer" ... "Electric Boogaloo" style that originated in the early 80's. As you said, this is the only video that shows the actual moves of the Boogaloo dance from the mid '60's.
+DJ Tony Vito It's nice to see a few of us still around to set the record straight! Electric Boogaloo might have been for the 80s but so unlike the original from the 60s. No fancy footwork, mostly upper body rhythm that takes a while to master.
The days when the entire country was "middle America" , as far as teens were concerned.
Some cities in the USA had local TV dance shows, but they usually looked sad when compared to "American Bandstand" or "Soul Train".
+Michael Williams Yes, but keep in mind they didn't have the same Budget. My Father was on a Regular on a Show similar to this and they didn't have the same "Sets", "Sponsors" or "Rock Stars".
Channel 9 in Los Angeles -- KHJ-TV back then, now KCAL -- had "Hollywood a Go Go" in the mid-1960s. That show had some of the hottest go-go dancing girls on TV, billed as the Gazzarri Dancers. Check out some of the clips on UA-cam.
I keep looking for my cousin Jack. I used to watch this show.
These kids dance like they are being held by strings!
That's really true! I wish I could have grown up during that period. I think that we need to bring dancing shows like these back. I mean, there are still a lot of dance fads today, and it'd be fun to learn older dances, too. It seems that 50s and 60s fashion trends are returning this year, though; I've even seen a few people sporting cat-eye glasses and was in an issue of Teen Vogue. Although, a lot of negative things went on back then too, like the war and the struggle attaining civil rights.
The Program originated from Stuebenville,Ohio.Home of Dean Martin & also Wild Cherry (Best known for the hit single,"Play that Funky Music").
Also, The R & B Group The O'Jays were originally from Ohio as well before moving to Philadelphia. Daryl Hall had them on his Webseries Live From Daryl's House.
Don't forget The R&B Group The Stereos.Famous for their 1961 Chart Hit Single,"I Really Love You".@@laminage
Interesting. Thanks for the info! I really do not know much about the show other than they invited kids from local schools to come and dance. I do not think that they had regulars but I am sure several people were on it a few times. I think my mom said she went a few times. This video was probably from 1967 or1968 b/c I am pretty sure that my mom was a sophomore in HS.
I remember this show!!
From WSTV, Channel 9, Steubenville OH (Dean Martin's hometown). Station call-letters are now WTOV.
The little Dude has Swag...
They couldn’t find one black couple. No soul at all to a real get down soul song. Thank god for soul train to show you how to dance soulfully.
I picked the winning couple!
the blonde is with her baby brother! ha ha ha
WSTV is now WTOV since 6/1/1979.
Imagine those kids now. Like me, all old and worn out. This sure brings back memories.
Oh yeah, in this video the hormones were raging. Today, not so much.
Steubenville, Ohio. The city that gave us dean Martin.
Also,Wild Cherry.(Famous for their Chart Hit Single "Play that Funky Music").
Okay then. Two entertainers to be proud of.🙂@@kurtkauffman4326
i wish our local station saved their show tapes
Me too, especially since I danced on a local show.
This song is an awesome one.
It stinks.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE...........
I WANT THE STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK ALBUM!!
I vote for the guy with the two tone Saddle Loafers!!
Nope, Not kidding. She almost died when she saw it. And to my knowledge, we do not know the person who posted the video. What is really wierd is that it looks like me when I was in high school only with super blond hair. I love this video and I am trying to get a copy.
Strawberry Alarm Clock album. Wow they they spared no expense there.
In the School that the Contestants were dancing for, there were only maybe about 4-6 Black People in the whole school at that time and it was a very small town. So don't be so picky-picky about every little thing. Every year, there is something different. So just wise up and go-with-the-flow-of-change!!!!! Thank you!!
THIS IS GREAT STUFF--a local tv dance show--there were at least 3 in Pittsburgh Ch-2, Ch-4 & Ch-11--
THIS IS GREAT!!!!
robert watt Indeed!!!!!
Wonder how many of those young guys ended up in Vietnam
Same thing with the Kids on American Bandstand.
too many, sadly.
@@michaelfuria4257 yes
Dear Khultan,
You ask a good question "Why did people vote for Nixon"?
My memory of that era and what was going on leads me to conclude that older, "mainstream" Americans, were scared and fed up with race rioting, which affected many cities, of the hippie movement with it's drug culture, of anti war protest and sharply escalating street crime; something our police, courts and prison system at the time was not equipped to fully deal with. Voting for Nixon was a hope for a return to "normalcy"
Back then none of us could dance.lol
they're all so cute.
I agree, especially the boy.
Big spenders dance winners get two albums one by Jonathan King that came out in 1965
It's interesting to contrast dance styles of 50s teens to 60s teens.
Glad you enjoyed my comments. As unfortunate as the dancers are, it was highly amusing to watch them. In fact, I'm going to find more of these local dance shows from You Tube's fine collection
I wonder what these kids are doing today in the year 2019? Retired? Alive and well? Anyone know?
I agree!
WOW!
I'm going to choose the guy in the dark jacket and shoes dancing with the girl in the big white collar for the next dance. He's great!
This sure brings back lots of Ohio Valley memories; used to watch this every Saturday afternoon. Any clips survive of the Stan Scott shows (pre-Del Curtis)? I don't consider the Incense & Peppermints lp as a dance album, but Strawberry Alarm Clock was very big at the time.
The winner gets a Strawberry Alarm Clock lp How awesome, do you think they still have it?
ok thanks!
DIG the back & white saddle shoes..badassssss!
remember it well oh yes! good time love the saddle shoes
I could have sworn that I placed some comments on this uploaded video. Hmmmm.
If I were a 60s juvenile or teen, I KNOW where I would be running to from school.
Sally and Johnny got it down to a T. Bit of a pyhric victory though.....Jonathan King indeed!!
one of those male go-go dancers looked like he was my age back then 11.
...Nobody got stabbed or robbed in the parking lot on the way home...etc.....;-)...
Sally Johnson was actually doing " The Boogaloo"
Good question...cuz I live in Ohio and know black folks from Steubenville. I guess this show wasn't integrated. However up in CLE we had a show called UpBeat and it was integrated. A friend of mine danced on there when she was a teen. There are clips of UpBeat on YT.
OH MY GOSH
John Waters would really dig this.
I can't believe guys danced in jackets and ties, I mean how could you move?
Dancing with tie and jacket ? We had to wear tie and jacket to school every day. No talking in the hallway between classes, single file against the lockers, Stairways one way you had your ups and downs. No smoking No music. Never did very well in high school. To this day I think they gave me a Mercy diploma .
I should it up my Aunt and Uncle show them this
Grandparents got down
I watched this with the sound down and it looked like seizure city.
first of all.. i bet the judges werent drinking Coffee.. lol and local Pittsburgh native at the end.. Glenn Campbell.. never knew he wasnt from Wichita.. lol
I have the strawberry alarm clock album, and the chocalote wristband album
Although this clip was in black-and-white, I wonder if this show was originally broadcast in color, given that all but a handful of local commercial TV stations had converted to color by 1968.
They weren't too bad. The girl in the sailor type dress and the blond got into it more. The guy with the black and white bucks also got into it more.
for a Strawberry Alarm Clock album? what was their big hit incest and peppermints
I have that album it’s not bad.
Obviously, Steubenville, OH was not the dance capital of the Midwest before Wild Cherry "Play(ed) that Funky Music". The only ones who could even come close to dancing well in this video were the two dark haired girls. The others were pretty bad!
i wonder how many of these guys had the draft in the back of their minds. i wonder which of them might have gone.
xD lol very cool
...HEY DEBBIE HAFT where are you NOW...
Ok; what is with the guy in the saddle shoes ??
@BigRed1930 So, I probably did see it when I was in college. Steubenville isn't that far away. Thanks for the reply.
Who performed the instrumental theme to this show? Sandy Nelson "Sock It To 'Em JB"
Angelique Collins Rex Garvin and the Mighty Cravers
My nieces dresses like this crazy thay seen pictures of their mom
dang they looked like somebody spiked their anasthesia
Is this filmed in Denver in the 1966?
....AND THE WINNER IS...................little dude...he was smooth...
RXmusic4YOU His dance partner was the better dancer of the two, plus, she's pretty. 😁
I think you mean Debbie, the blond. I liked her, too! Little dude barely looked old enough to be on the show!
Not a whale in the bunch; those were the days.
When was this?
i think i saw Elaine dancing.
Where was this broadcast from??
robert watt Ohio.
was this a national show or a local show???
Forgot all about this song. Where was this show. Cleveland? I went to school at Case and vaguely remember a show like this.
Steubenville
