If that's really your dad in this video I just love it! How fun to see your dad on here, how he was back then.....He's dancing great...I'm his age, this was how it was done....Congrats on having a rockin Dad.
Your MOM!!!! That is just incredible!!! I know, I am eavesdropping , but I HAD to stop here and say WHAT a SMALL WORLD! Thanks to UA-cam... that is awesome!
Sally Johnson was jammin'! She had pure confidence as she was dancing. He partner was good too, but for me it was all about her. She was smooth with her moves.
Thanks so much for posting this. For years I was trying to find this Song and I did thanks to you. When I heard this Song when I was a Kid, I thought it was Sam & Dave. : - )
It was a simpler, safer, happier and carefree time. We never worried about whether or not we would make it home if we walked three blocks from our house. Teens were rebellious (they always are), but they weren't as violent as teens are today. We respected the law, and for the most part, respected our parents. I am happy that I was a teen when it was fun to be a teen.
Oh wow! This was uncomfortable to watch, yet entertaining. Before social media and the internet, where the only way one could see people dance other than physically going to a club or school dance, or at home ,TV was the only way to witness this entertainment.
+james cashell In the early days of American Bandstand while it was still broadcasted in Philadelphia, PA., many of the Guys wore Suits & Ties. Some just wore it as a rule but most were students at a Catholic High School.
Ohio holds a very special part in Pop Music & Culture. It is home of Alan Freed, The Rock 'N Roll Hall Of Fame Museum not to mention the Birthplace of 98 Degrees and it's also the Birthplace of The O'Jays who made Their Bones in Philly as well as Late Comedian Richard Pryor.
+Michael Williams Yes, but keep in mind they didn't have the same Budget. My Father was on a Regular on a Show similar to this and they didn't have the same "Sets", "Sponsors" or "Rock Stars".
Channel 9 in Los Angeles -- KHJ-TV back then, now KCAL -- had "Hollywood a Go Go" in the mid-1960s. That show had some of the hottest go-go dancing girls on TV, billed as the Gazzarri Dancers. Check out some of the clips on UA-cam.
Also, The R & B Group The O'Jays were originally from Ohio as well before moving to Philadelphia. Daryl Hall had them on his Webseries Live From Daryl's House.
Interesting. Thanks for the info! I really do not know much about the show other than they invited kids from local schools to come and dance. I do not think that they had regulars but I am sure several people were on it a few times. I think my mom said she went a few times. This video was probably from 1967 or1968 b/c I am pretty sure that my mom was a sophomore in HS.
That's really true! I wish I could have grown up during that period. I think that we need to bring dancing shows like these back. I mean, there are still a lot of dance fads today, and it'd be fun to learn older dances, too. It seems that 50s and 60s fashion trends are returning this year, though; I've even seen a few people sporting cat-eye glasses and was in an issue of Teen Vogue. Although, a lot of negative things went on back then too, like the war and the struggle attaining civil rights.
I'm a grandma that used to do the boogaloo but to faster music! The winning girl does it correctly and the young boy has the best foot work but his arm movement isn't right. Most of the boogaloo videos on youtube are not doing the dance correctly. This is the first one I found that is correct but faster music helps you move your shoulders more. It's more of an upper body movement dance than footwork except for sliding your feet. It's not an easy dance to learn.
I agree I'm 65 and danced to this music many times, while this is not the greatest dancing it is the only accurate example I have found of the way kids danced in the late 60's. The brunette who wins is clearly the best.
+homedecorable - I've looked at maybe 10 different "Boogaloo" videos, but they're all the "newer" ... "Electric Boogaloo" style that originated in the early 80's. As you said, this is the only video that shows the actual moves of the Boogaloo dance from the mid '60's.
+DJ Tony Vito It's nice to see a few of us still around to set the record straight! Electric Boogaloo might have been for the 80s but so unlike the original from the 60s. No fancy footwork, mostly upper body rhythm that takes a while to master.
Glad you enjoyed my comments. As unfortunate as the dancers are, it was highly amusing to watch them. In fact, I'm going to find more of these local dance shows from You Tube's fine collection
Nope, Not kidding. She almost died when she saw it. And to my knowledge, we do not know the person who posted the video. What is really wierd is that it looks like me when I was in high school only with super blond hair. I love this video and I am trying to get a copy.
Dear Khultan, You ask a good question "Why did people vote for Nixon"? My memory of that era and what was going on leads me to conclude that older, "mainstream" Americans, were scared and fed up with race rioting, which affected many cities, of the hippie movement with it's drug culture, of anti war protest and sharply escalating street crime; something our police, courts and prison system at the time was not equipped to fully deal with. Voting for Nixon was a hope for a return to "normalcy"
This sure brings back lots of Ohio Valley memories; used to watch this every Saturday afternoon. Any clips survive of the Stan Scott shows (pre-Del Curtis)? I don't consider the Incense & Peppermints lp as a dance album, but Strawberry Alarm Clock was very big at the time.
Good question...cuz I live in Ohio and know black folks from Steubenville. I guess this show wasn't integrated. However up in CLE we had a show called UpBeat and it was integrated. A friend of mine danced on there when she was a teen. There are clips of UpBeat on YT.
Although this clip was in black-and-white, I wonder if this show was originally broadcast in color, given that all but a handful of local commercial TV stations had converted to color by 1968.
In the School that the Contestants were dancing for, there were only maybe about 4-6 Black People in the whole school at that time and it was a very small town. So don't be so picky-picky about every little thing. Every year, there is something different. So just wise up and go-with-the-flow-of-change!!!!! Thank you!!
first of all.. i bet the judges werent drinking Coffee.. lol and local Pittsburgh native at the end.. Glenn Campbell.. never knew he wasnt from Wichita.. lol
Dancing with tie and jacket ? We had to wear tie and jacket to school every day. No talking in the hallway between classes, single file against the lockers, Stairways one way you had your ups and downs. No smoking No music. Never did very well in high school. To this day I think they gave me a Mercy diploma .
What is the name of the blonde haired dancer? I can't make out what she says. She looks amazingly similar to Brittany Snow. Is that really her brother she is dancing with?
We used to love ridiculing Nixon then as a "fascist". When you are young, you don't realize that political labels like "left" and "right" change over time and shift like the dunes in the desert. Nixon's response to racial unrest was the passage of a civil rights act. He also proposed universal health coverage for all. These positions, (especially the latter) would put him at the radical far left today. The Republican party would disown him, as it has shifted so much further to the right!
Obviously, Steubenville, OH was not the dance capital of the Midwest before Wild Cherry "Play(ed) that Funky Music". The only ones who could even come close to dancing well in this video were the two dark haired girls. The others were pretty bad!
amazing how someone from a supremely colonial country, one steeped in monarchy and beheadings, can actually attempt to be derisive in their approach to the US. what runs thru my mind watching this is...how many of them died in vietnam?
That's my Dad in the saddle shoes!!!!! You go Mike!!!!!!! And you still shake your head when you dance! I love it!
I never knew they made Saddle Shoes for guys.
OMG! The blonde is my mom! Good times Barnesville. Good times.
we need bring back dancing tv shows like this in todays society that would be cool.
Dancing to Justin Bieber and any garbage Euro Beat music simply wouldn’t cut it!
Good point.@@HemiVic
I’m really impressed that the audience was integrated and that it was broadcast on television.

PRICELESS!! This show was the most.
1968....and nearly every American classroom had at least one girl named LINDA.
+brownies4you No more Lindas today.
@@rascal211 not as many as there used to be, but a few are still around..
The latter 1960's,to be exact. Thanks alot for posting.
Around 1968
I'm from this generation-groovy-where did all that time go-the little dude has swagger.
I keep looking for my cousin Jack. I used to watch this show.
From WSTV, Channel 9, Steubenville OH (Dean Martin's hometown). Station call-letters are now WTOV.
It wasn’t 1968, it would have been Stan Scott hosting. I was cameraman and audio man from 1965 through 1969.
The couple in the back have it nailed!!!We have a winner!!!
too bad, many teens today think their grandparents have a shitty life but actually it's our life that is shitty and their lives were cooler.
Very true

Some cities in the USA had local TV dance shows, but they usually looked sad when compared to "American Bandstand" or "Soul Train".

The Music, the bands, and the fashion back then is so much better than anything today!
But not the dancing!
No difference!
The Program originated from Stuebenville,Ohio.Home of Dean Martin & also Wild Cherry (Best known for the hit single,"Play that Funky Music").

The days when the entire country was "middle America" , as far as teens were concerned.
Big spenders dance winners get two albums one by Jonathan King that came out in 1965
These kids dance like they are being held by strings!
i wish our local station saved their show tapes
Me too, especially since I danced on a local show.
The little Dude has Swag...
THIS IS GREAT STUFF--a local tv dance show--there were at least 3 in Pittsburgh Ch-2, Ch-4 & Ch-11--
This song is an awesome one.
It stinks.
Strawberry Alarm Clock album. Wow they they spared no expense there.

It's interesting to contrast dance styles of 50s teens to 60s teens.
@BigRed1930 So, I probably did see it when I was in college. Steubenville isn't that far away. Thanks for the reply.
