Had the pleasure of seeing these guys open for Al Kooper and the Car Show in NYC. Must have been in 1969. Have been looking for their albums for a long time. Thanks for this video

Saw them on Smothers Brothers Show around 1969 .- went out the next day and
bought their album Fusion - I still have it. Very powerful counter culture stuff even in 2012.

The Hello People are singing "Let's Go Hide in the Forest," that was released a a single in late 1967 (Philips #40481). It was not part of any album.

I saw them on the Today show in 1968, and wondered, "What the hell is this?"
I saw them shortly thereafter on "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" doing an anti-war song, "I'm Going to Prison So I Can Be Free" (or something like that)... and then I saw them two years later (and for several successive years after that) at Marietta College (Ohio), and they put on one of the 10 best concerts I have ever seen. The entire show was in mime, except for the music.
N.D. Smart III was on drums (a "Runt-"era Todd Rundgren sideman, even then), and the flute player, who also played electric alto sax (the first time I had ever seen such a thing; I'd never heard of Eddie Harris at that point), who was also the best mime, was a guy named Mike Sagarese, who went on to teach Music Ed. at the Manhattan School of Music.
(He also convinced me, in a conversation after the show, not to try to be Rock Star, or even a Full-time Professional Musician, until I finished college...
    Thank you, sir.)
    Addendum:
They came to Marietta for shows in four successive years:
Between the third year and the fourth year, they were signed to a MAJOR label, given the benefit of high-level direction...
...and the fourth year's show was, by far, the worst.
    Further Addendum:
Look at the opening credits... all the kids dancing are black...
Look at the show itself... you see not one young American of African descent, not one...

The song you heard is titled 'Anthem'. I first saw that performance when E! re-aired 'The Smothers Brothers' Comedy Hour'.

The Hello People were, to some extent, a novelty act with the mime shtick and that probably limited their popularity. But if you listen to their first two albums, they made pretty damn good music for the day.

In 67 my buddy Steve and I hitchhiked to San Fransisco to see The Paul Butterfield Blues Band play at the Fillmore. There were two unknown bands also playing in the line-up. Santanna and Hello People.

One of the band members was from Athens, Ohio, where I went to school(Ohio U.) They actually were really good in their day-- used to see em a couple times a year down there.

Wow, I must be having an acid flashback! First, an offscreen announcer introduces the show. A 100% black audience is dancing. A few seconds later the host says they're running out of time...and Whooosh! Completely new scenery, an all white audience, and the most un-black band in history appears out of nowhere - a troop of ghosts singing a haunting and catchy melody from another world. Then Whoosh! Cut to Booker T and the MGs and some bored teens!
Loved it - thanks for posting.

It is indeed quite a hodgepodge, but that was par for the course in the late 60s! You describe it so well!

Boy, they were a much better group than this song shows. The album they made with Todd Rundgren producing was a amazing.

I'm always intrigued by groups with unusual off-brand guitars, instead of the usual Fenders and Rickenbackers. That 12-string is interesting, as is that bass.

I have one of their albums from 1970. The album is called FUSION and has a lot of folk and jazz influences in it. A little of new left politics in the lyrics. They all had painted faces and went by nicknames. I will have to dig up the album and put a song or two on the youtube.

That is NOT Todd Rundgren. Todd produced them, but the guitar player was on the first couple albums, but had to go to prison for protesting the war and left the band... I saw them a lot, mostly after he left, and eventually the flute player as well. Couldn't really see if the drummer was ND Smart, but the rest are the original members

You're being a bit unfair. True, this is not one of Hello People's better stuff and not a reflection on their true grit. They had a great 45 in 1968 called "Jerusalem" and hat an edgy anti-war "Anthem" on the Smothers Brothers show, which fortunately someone found and shared on UA-cam...I think put in a search "Hello People Anthem" and you'll find it.
