"Interesting English translations" in regards to Inarizaki players might have to do with translators trying to show that they're speaking another dialect of Japanese (Kansai-ben) as opposed to Karasuno, since Inarizaki are from the Kansai region.

Hey coach! I wanted to clarify some things animation wise since I work in the western TV animation industry.
One animator is usually not going to animate a whole episode. Pipeline wise, that would simply take too long. Instead, with studios like Production IG, they assign anywhere from 15-50 animators (sometimes more/less depending on the demands of a season) several shots to animate. Some episodes have more shots than others but 250-350 shots per 23 minutes is pretty standard.
So whenever you see the camera make a cut like you mentioned in the video, another animator is animating that shot. It’s up to the director and production to make sure the quality remains consistent between shots. However, since some shots aren’t a priority due to time restrictions with productions, you’ll sometimes get one shot that’s a little wonky and another shot(thats really important to the story and the director wanted to prioritize) that’s super well done.
Hope that wasn’t too long but not many people know how the sausage is made in my industry and I wanted to share my two cents. Haikyuu is such a big show and sometimes I feel bad for the animators with how hard people are on season 4.

Hey Coach! Regarding good players who didn't go to Shiratorizawa: Shiratorizawa is regarded as a powerhouse school and it is the best one in Hinata's prefecture, but many other schools in the country are on the same level or better (The inter-high tournament earlier that year featured Shiratorizawa, but teams like Inarizaki and Itachiyama did better than them).
Also, Inarizaki's very far from the Miyagi prefecture, so kids wouldn't have many reasons to go to shiratorizawa over inarizaki if they ever happened to get an offer from both

I love how everytime a new great player shows up Coach Donny asks why they didn't go to Shiratorizawa. Because they live in a completely different part of the country Coach 🤣. it'd be like a middle schooler from New York suddenly going to high school in California just cause he's good at volleyball. They just go to the nearest schools in their cities or states that have a good program. Or some just go to the nearest school and make that school good by being there. If it was college it'd be different obviously since people do get recruited from out of state all the time. And Shiratorizawa isn't even considered top 3 schools in the country. They're using a 3D animation program for the balls, they'll just need the background and the balls, so it's just a 2 layers. Unlike animations during the 90's which is in 2D, today's modern animation they mix 3D and 2D animation.

Yeah, I was going to say that those balls during the warm up looked pretty CG. And if they used a physics simulation to animate them, then it shouldn't have been hard at all

Inarizaki's school colors are black, maroon and white. The jerseys are black with white details. So Karasuno used alternate jerseys instead of their usual black with orange detail. It's just for the camera, to differentiate them easily, for those watching on tv. I assume since Inarizaki is the higher seed they get to use their main jerseys.

Hey Coach, just a clarification. Some seasons in japanese animations are split in the half part, few months apart (almost two different seasons, but since most animes are renewed per season no matter what, these breaks helps the studio prepare for the other half, or realocate staff to other running shows for the time being).
The thing that happenend is: season 4 part 2 of Haikyuu started production on the begining of lockdown in Japan, because of the corona virus, so their schedule got really messy, and they started outsourcing some chunks of episodes, and one entire episode (the infamous bad animation one), this made season 4 become more inconsistent in the latter half, but was mostly cause of the pandemic. And not some trend about the show, and even tho, there are some greatly animated scenes and moments yet to come

25:18 : it's a Japanese "trick" to get over stage-fright. You write the character for person in kanji on your palm, which is 人 and then mimic swallowing it. Asahi does this several times throughout the show, even back from season 1.

The commentary about the ball animation starting at around 14:30 is a bit funny to hear, since it was probably one of the easiest shots to make, rather than the hardest like you imagined.
Throughout the series, any moving ball will almost always be a CG element done in 3D. Setting up a few physics simulations for 20 or so spinning objects that only have to worry about gravity will be hundreds of times easier than drawing it manually.
I'd be willing to wager the background art probably took more time to complete than everything else in the shot, and that would have likely been done with photographic or CG reference too.

Hey Coach, since you do seem to have a pretty big interest in the animation process and how anime compares with your own animation experience, you may be interested in a show called Shirobako. It's literally an anime about a company that makes anime, and it goes into a fair bit of depth about the behind-the-scenes process and the logistics of putting together a whole show. It doesn't really fit at all with the theme of the Elevate Yourself channel, so it's probably not something that makes sense here, but it's such a great show that I felt I should recommend it anyway. Thanks for the video as always!

Kanoaka exists to highlight some of Tanaka's better qualities. She shines a light on how genuine he is despite having a personality that makes it difficult to take him seriously. For instance, most teenage boys would have jumped at the "chance", with a pretty, athletic girl but Tanaka feels an obligation to turn her down and quickly, to both spare this girl dwelling on him and to remain loyal to his longtime crush on Shimizu.

So they just talk differently, think Georgia or Alabama for dialect.

The scene with the balls maybe are made in 3D?
You only have to make one, clone it in the scene changing the rotation and placement of each one, and finally you combine the intial and end positions with the time and some keyframes for get the animation of all of them..

Coach. I like all the insight you give, but the timing ist not so good. It would be better if you waited for a scene to end and then pause and go back to talk about it. An example pf this is when they present the twins and you stop the video missing it, when the half-time of the episode was just one second away. You miss a lot of little details because of this. Its just my opinion and I really like the commentary, otherwise I wouldnt be watching you every week for so long :). Just think letting the scenes play out a little more would make for a better experience

not trying to hate but i cant really enjoy these reaction videos as much as i used to, mainly because of how every scene was interrupted by commentary on animations, which just doesnt appeal to me personally. I also feel like coach talks alongside the animation quite a lot, resulting in him not really the subtitles i think (which is necessary for us non-japanese speakers), and thus results in him just missing a whole dialog altogether or having to replay scenes over and over again. Imo it would be much nicer of he pauses less often and just provide longer commentary afterwards in these pauses, compared to keep breaking up the flow of the anime.

  • @nico6319

It seems like Coach Donny is being a little too focused on the animation. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing, but the fact that he's pausing the video to explain this things but not to talk about the details about the content of the show is a bit annoying. Is like he's missing some key dialogues or exchanges for the wrong reasons.
Anyway, that's just my opinion. I still enjoy watching this reactions

So they dont describe it in the anime but they mention Asahi’s process in the Manga. But Asahi has his own pre serve mantra. He thinks about how much power he’s going to into put into his swing to control where it’ll land.
He also squeezes his fist extra tight so it relaxes so that his hand won’t be as stiff when he serves to make it easier to flick his wrist.
