Hey coach! I wanted to clarify some things animation wise since I work in the western TV animation industry. One animator is usually not going to animate a whole episode. Pipeline wise, that would simply take too long. Instead, with studios like Production IG, they assign anywhere from 15-50 animators (sometimes more/less depending on the demands of a season) several shots to animate. Some episodes have more shots than others but 250-350 shots per 23 minutes is pretty standard. So whenever you see the camera make a cut like you mentioned in the video, another animator is animating that shot. It’s up to the director and production to make sure the quality remains consistent between shots. However, since some shots aren’t a priority due to time restrictions with productions, you’ll sometimes get one shot that’s a little wonky and another shot(thats really important to the story and the director wanted to prioritize) that’s super well done. Hope that wasn’t too long but not many people know how the sausage is made in my industry and I wanted to share my two cents. Haikyuu is such a big show and sometimes I feel bad for the animators with how hard people are on season 4.
I feel like we need n saying that for ages. I’m still very confused when he refers to animator. Does he mean the group as a whole, director, or someone else? I wish he would clarify what he means.
I mean he's not wrong. Different people do different scenes. So when he sees a notable difference from one scene to another it's safe to assume it was done by someone else. Plus a lot of scenes in the 2nd part of season 4 were outsourced to different studios.

"I'm also exited to see what type of dynamic happens with the two twin brothers. Because when you have that level of chemistry, cool stuff happens." YES IT DOES!
Before the match, Asahi was likely drawing the character for person, 人, on his hand. A common way Japanese people try to get rid of nerves is to draw the character on their hand three times and “swallow” it. It is supposed to symbolize the insignificance of the people watching and affirming that you are in control by swallowing them.
Couch, this season was divided in 2 when it was aired. This was the last chapter before a long delay since they were working in the beginning of the pandemic. So the animation may sometimes look a lot worse in some episodes, but not all of them.
I still wish they would have just waited to properly animate this match. This is one of my favorite matches in the manga but it's just so badly done in the anime. I still love the moments but the animation just makes me sad/angry. @@gachagenie again overreacting the season was fine it was only one outsourced ep out of 12 the rest was pretty consistent and remember these are back to back non stop action eps!
Inarizaki's school colors are black, maroon and white. The jerseys are black with white details. So Karasuno used alternate jerseys instead of their usual black with orange detail. It's just for the camera, to differentiate them easily, for those watching on tv. I assume since Inarizaki is the higher seed they get to use their main jerseys.
34:34 Actually there is a famous Shinto shrine, Inari-fushimi (稲荷伏見) in Kyoto, and that contains the word "Inari(稲荷)" of Inarizaki(稲荷崎). So "Inari(稲荷)" reminds Japanese of the Shinto shrink and foxes which are messengers of god of Inari-fushimi shrink. That's why symbol of Inarizaki is fox, like crow in Karasuno.
When Atsumu says that he hates playing against people who sucks he means people who aren't trying their hardest. In the moment he saw Hinata day dreaming about something else and assumed that he has a very bad work ethic.
That’s not true at all. You can even see in the flashbacks and everything about atsumu, the results matter the most to him. If they don’t deliver results, atsumu doesn’t like them
I love how everytime a new great player shows up Coach Donny asks why they didn't go to Shiratorizawa. Because they live in a completely different part of the country Coach 🤣. it'd be like a middle schooler from New York suddenly going to high school in California just cause he's good at volleyball. They just go to the nearest schools in their cities or states that have a good program. Or some just go to the nearest school and make that school good by being there. If it was college it'd be different obviously since people do get recruited from out of state all the time. And Shiratorizawa isn't even considered top 3 schools in the country. Only Ushiwaka individually is considered one of the top 3 spikers in the country. Hope that clears things up for you Coach
Yeah, recruiting in high school is very rare, especially out of prefecture. It sometimes happens for more popular sports like baseball (where athletes move from more competitive cities to rural prefectures so they can compete), but not volleyball, definitely.
@@ElevateYourselfOfficial They could, and one of Inarizaki's students (Suna) is actually from the Aichi region and not Hyogo, where Inarizaki is. However, while Shiratorizawa is a powerhouse school, they are not the only powerhouse school. Schools like Inarizaki and Itachiyama are equally good :))
@@ElevateYourselfOfficial Shiratorizawa is kind of a big fish in a small pond. That's why the prefecture where they're from only gets to send a single representative to Nationals, whereas some of the larger prefectures can send two.
@@aime562 Aichi prefecture and Hyogo are not THAT far from each other so it's more believable. They are litterally next to each other. By car it would be 2 hours. By train 1.30 hours. So Suna could still probably commute to school or even stay at school during the week and go home on the weekends if they had dorms. So yes theoretically it could happen but it's so rare in high school volleyball and miyagi and nagano where hoshiumi is are much farther apart. Like some people said, for baseball definitely since it's so HUGE in japan. But volleyball is only recently becoming more popular in japan. Maybe in the future it will be on baseball level and recruiting middle school players out of prefecture will become more common place
I know people said they enjoy the animation asides, but I personally enjoy your life advice mini-lectures on self improvement. Even when talking about specifically workouts or volleyball, I find that you speak it in such a way that anyone can take that concept and apply it to almost any sort of goal they wish to achieve, which I always find very inspiring!
Finally, the team that I wanted coach's thoughts on /scolding / praise. I'm looking forwards to seeing his reaction to my favorite match in the series.
I really like inarizaki, their motto of "we don't need the memories" is both very cocky but confident in a way that show how they play in a way that they wont regreat, they are never to safe or sure about themselfs even if they are confident that they are going to win. Very fun team, as you will see in the next episodes
25:18 : it's a Japanese "trick" to get over stage-fright. You write the character for person in kanji on your palm, which is 人 and then mimic swallowing it. Asahi does this several times throughout the show, even back from season 1.
Yes! Finally we're at the point where we'll be seeing Coach's reaction to Inarizaki. I actually held off on commenting on the "what would your starting lineup be" because there's three players from Inarizaki that I'd want on my personal team.
Kanoaka exists to highlight some of Tanaka's better qualities. She shines a light on how genuine he is despite having a personality that makes it difficult to take him seriously. For instance, most teenage boys would have jumped at the "chance", with a pretty, athletic girl but Tanaka feels an obligation to turn her down and quickly, to both spare this girl dwelling on him and to remain loyal to his longtime crush on Shimizu.
Not gonna lie, I WOULD LOOOOOVE to see you react to the entire series again, with new comments, new perspectives and noticing things you didn't before!!

Kanoka's school, Niiyama Girls High School is a basically the powerhouse of powerhouses on the girls side in the Miyagi prefecture. They have won several Interhigh, and Spring Tournament titles over the years including the Interhigh this year.
Ok, after my comment on your last episode, I think this episode is perfect! The amount of focus on the show’s story, characters and what’s going on AND the focus you put on the animation was perfect. This is what keeps me coming back and watching the show with you. I’m glad you’re enjoying it and things are going well for you. Wishing all the best, keep it going!
So excited to see Coach's reaction to this match!! It's definitely one that deserves to be hyped up, and I can't wait for you to get to know the players from Inarizaki as well and get your insight on them, especially since you've already picked how the twins could do some really cool stuff with their chemistry. This one's gonna be awesome, I can't wait. Also, I'm so glad to finally see you try the waterbottle scene, it's super cool u got it on the first try, and I love how the waterbottle hit the camera just like in one of the animated scenes 😆
Any chance at the end of this series you could do like a top 20 favorite moments throughout the entire anime? Would love to see something like that Coach.
They're using a 3D animation program for the balls, they'll just need the background and the balls, so it's just a 2 layers. Unlike animations during the 90's which is in 2D, today's modern animation they mix 3D and 2D animation.
Yeah, I was going to say that those balls during the warm up looked pretty CG. And if they used a physics simulation to animate them, then it shouldn't have been hard at all
So they dont describe it in the anime but they mention Asahi’s process in the Manga. But Asahi has his own pre serve mantra. He thinks about how much power he’s going to into put into his swing to control where it’ll land. He also squeezes his fist extra tight so it relaxes so that his hand won’t be as stiff when he serves to make it easier to flick his wrist.
Love the half time and that was real awesome! Thank you Coach! This is the one of the best arc of Haikyuu! and you will definitely love Karasuno much more and love Inarizaki as well.
Actually that fat bird or the cats and owls at the half time scene is the characters themself (fat bird-black crow with orange hair is Hinata, silver hair owl is Bokuto, black hair cat is Kuroo and yellow hair cat is Kenma)
If you watch it all again, watch (listen/read) to after the credits, The parts where it would show spoilers, because the little interactions between characters are pretty funny.
Each animal during intermission scenes represent a character from the anime that you can identify by its hair coach, as you can see on this one, orange hair = hinata, while on the previous episode one, there were two cats (which are nekoma's animal) one being kuroo and the other one kenma.
Hey Coach, just a clarification. Some seasons in japanese animations are split in the half part, few months apart (almost two different seasons, but since most animes are renewed per season no matter what, these breaks helps the studio prepare for the other half, or realocate staff to other running shows for the time being). The thing that happenend is: season 4 part 2 of Haikyuu started production on the begining of lockdown in Japan, because of the corona virus, so their schedule got really messy, and they started outsourcing some chunks of episodes, and one entire episode (the infamous bad animation one), this made season 4 become more inconsistent in the latter half, but was mostly cause of the pandemic. And not some trend about the show, and even tho, there are some greatly animated scenes and moments yet to come
I like how coach always explains "his immediate reaction", even though we all know his true immediate reaction was the same as all of ours...."over already?". "NO! they just had the commercial", or, "did they even have the commercial?!", coming in a close second and third.
omfg yesss my favorite game so far!!!! and I believe there's a Shinto shrine in the back at the end because "Miya" (the surname of the twins) means shrine, and often times shrines are guarded by foxes, which is what the mascot for Inarizaki is. This game is honestly so cool. also HIGHLY recommend rewatching Haikyuu, because as much as I liked it the first watch, the second watch really made me love it.
The ending to this episode is one I remember very well because the season took a break for covid at this point, and we didn't see the next episode of this season for over a year.
Coach, from this episode up to the last is where people were saying the animation lowers in quality or rather changes drastically. But the story and the match itself is *chef's kiss*
I haven't seen anybody else talk about this, but I'm almost certain that the balls animation has always been CGI, the way it spins and acts in the air is too smooth to be hand animated, and would definitely save time so it makes sense
14:30 oo aren't they CGI balls? the way they move so smooth, also the outlines look like ones CGI usually has in anime. the fact that they're further from the camera probably makes it easier to hide
You really don’t pay attention to subtitles sometimes lmao. They say something and then you ask the same question second later. For example 24:50 Hinata is saying how Noya look like a star in their switched colours uniforms and then u ask if this is first time they have orange on.
Since the animation has moved into advanced techniques and realism, I normally felt that high quality animations are normalized by all the anime and other animations, I forget to appreciate the effort, hard work and time spent for it. Coach Donny always reminds me that every scene that I get goosebumps from had so much work done in it and I have learnt to appreciate it even more.
Hey coach love your videos! My favorite part of the week. Just wanted to say that the birds, cats, owls and soon foxes are animal representations of the characters 🤣 you can tell who they are meant to be by their hair or eyebrows like this one with the orange hair is meant to be hinata. In official artwork you see them holding them sometimes.
fun fact about the Miya twins is that they make a few metaphors using food and their names actually mean hunger and contentment. It makes for a smooth but entertaining yin and yang dynamic. (you can figure out which is which as you see more of them)
I always ask myself in these videos “why is Coach Donny so good at everything?” He literally does not need to go through all this effort for reactions and yet he does. Such a blessing to the reaction community man (if you count him being apart of it).
The scene with the balls maybe are made in 3D? You only have to make one, clone it in the scene changing the rotation and placement of each one, and finally you combine the intial and end positions with the time and some keyframes for get the animation of all of them..
Seeing Saori Kimura flashed on the screen got me real gooosebumpssss. but yap, it is intentional, the character is inspired of Japan's National team's former captain.
Finally we see Kita, this man is my 2nd favorite character of the show, I can't express how much he changed my viewing on my own life. But i love him so much
I'm surprised coach remembers hoshiumi's name lol, his muscle memory for hq is getting better Also miya atsumu hand gesture before serve was really cool i gasped watching this the first time
one time I played against two brothers, one was a great setter, and the other a great hitter, and some of their plays they put together were mind-boggling, the one I remember best was when the setter had to run in and back set a quick to his brother with one hand. It's really amazing to see how the personal connection between people can transport to the court.
This is the last episode before season cut. There was a break between when ep 13 and 14 aired. Part 2 of this season is where animation gets more... lets say wild.

@@gachagenie again overreacting the season was fine it was only one outsourced ep out of 12 the rest was pretty consistent and remember these are back to back non stop action eps!
Pandemic or not, the schedule was tight.
This is my favorite match. I can't wait for you to see Inarizaki especially the captain
Same!
The captains back story might be my favorite of the whole show
@@svgftw351 honestly yeah very subtle but strong scene. He is also really going to dig the twins dynamic.
Also he once said i want a captain that on the bench
Hyped with anticipation for Monster’s Ball!!!
21:20 the smooth sword at Kita's back is flawless!! 😂😂
The “boyfriend” isn’t actually her boyfriend. From the line she said when she mightve got her heart broken, she indirectly said brother.
Niichan means brother, coach.
@@egrassa1480 may also be used for a close male cousin or friend that's seen as a brother.
And, yes, I'm aware "itoko" is cousin.
@@Juice1984 you're right. Volume 28, Page 83, official english translation has cousin there.

i always love how dramatic atusmu gets with stopping the band when he begins his serve, he's so funny yet so cool
I think he meant what he meant. U can understand it by Kageyama's words. So Atsumu said about skill
Totally false, he meant players who sucks wheter they're trying hard or not
That’s not true at all.
@@aime562 this
@@ElevateYourselfOfficial Shiratorizawa is kind of a big fish in a small pond.
OMG I LOVED THE WATER BOTTLE HALF-SCENE. It made me laugh so much and I'm just impressed!! ROFL
I loved it too!!! awesome!!!
Me too!!!
I really like inarizaki, their motto of "we don't need the memories" is both very cocky but confident in a way that show how they play in a way that they wont regreat, they are never to safe or sure about themselfs even if they are confident that they are going to win. Very fun team, as you will see in the next episodes
Inarizaki are an amazing team, probably my favorite in the series.
HERE WE GO.
One of the best matches of the Nationals.
Can't wait for more.
I love the way Kanoka's friend Naruto runs out of the way at 22:30. That's a good friend right there!
Not gonna lie, I WOULD LOOOOOVE to see you react to the entire series again, with new comments, new perspectives and noticing things you didn't before!!
the halftime water bottle thingy is super cool, coach. well done!
At the end of season 4 we need a starting Line Up from you coach
COACH!! YES PLEASE REACT TO THE WHOLE SERIES AGAIN PLEASE!! EVERY SINGLE EPISODE! even after rewatching this for 5-6 times, I always find out new things I have not noticed/seen/analysed before. it's really deep
Coach Donny, the wisdom you drop randomly throughout the reactions is undefeated. Thank you for all that you do!
Coach has now met the Miya Twins! You’ll love the whole Inarizaki team. Especially the captain! And new intro next episode!
oh coach buckle up your seatbelt you are about to have the most greatest anime volleyball match ever
coaaaach!! i'm really excited for you to meet one of my favourite characters of all time and from inarizaki too!! without giving too much away i think you will really like his character !! I look forward to your reaction videos coach!! though s4 is nearly coming to an end it feels like only yesterday when i found your reaction videos to s1 of haikyuu!! time flies
Which one?
@@vailble8103 i dont want to say because it might be a spoiler for coach
Kanoka's school, Niiyama Girls High School is a basically the powerhouse of powerhouses on the girls side in the Miyagi prefecture. They have won several Interhigh, and Spring Tournament titles over the years including the Interhigh this year.
Ok, after my comment on your last episode, I think this episode is perfect! The amount of focus on the show’s story, characters and what’s going on AND the focus you put on the animation was perfect. This is what keeps me coming back and watching the show with you.
I’m glad you’re enjoying it and things are going well for you. Wishing all the best, keep it going!
OMG! And so it begins... I love this match!
This match is so good. Especially that one part(you'll know when you get to it)
It really starts to show how everyone improved from before nationals
Hello, coach! I don't know if someone already said this but the crow at the commercial is actually Hinata. It has orange hair like him ^^
OMG THE HALF TIME HITTING THE BOTTLE HAHAHHA, not gonna lie i missed that half time too
I replayed the water bottle scene 6 times, too perfect!! Love it
So excited to see Coach's reaction to this match!!
Thank you coach for extra efforts you’ve done, the halftime is definitely appreciated
Any chance at the end of this series you could do like a top 20 favorite moments throughout the entire anime? Would love to see something like that Coach.
kita-san is one of my favorite characters, I’m so excited to see him again 🥺
Coach doing the "hit the bottle" halftime serve is a brilliant move
They're using a 3D animation program for the balls, they'll just need the background and the balls, so it's just a 2 layers. Unlike animations during the 90's which is in 2D, today's modern animation they mix 3D and 2D animation.
Yeah, I was going to say that those balls during the warm up looked pretty CG. And if they used a physics simulation to animate them, then it shouldn't have been hard at all
Was looking for this comment, it also wouldn't make sense for them to spend that many frames on a not plot significant scene
Coach: I'm all about backstory just like HQ
We, crying: and what's why we love youuuuuu
That half-time clip made me remember Coach saying he wanna do the "Tanaka half-time clip" where he took his shirt off and spun it over his head.
oh my god coach is finally meeting my fav team!! i've been waiting for this for so long TT
omfg yesss my favorite game so far!!!! and I believe there's a Shinto shrine in the back at the end because "Miya" (the surname of the twins) means shrine, and often times shrines are guarded by foxes, which is what the mascot for Inarizaki is. This game is honestly so cool.
also HIGHLY recommend rewatching Haikyuu, because as much as I liked it the first watch, the second watch really made me love it.
The ending to this episode is one I remember very well because the season took a break for covid at this point, and we didn't see the next episode of this season for over a year.
you forgot to do the Tanaka shirt pull-off & spin when you hit the bottle lol
You get more and more comfortable with your commentary every episode! Thoroughly enjoy this series. Keep it up dude!!!
OMG JUST USE YOUR OWN HALF TIME BREAK. WITH YOUR FRIENDS IN IT LOL ITS AMAZING
I shouted or cheered along when coach did the Haikyuu commercial break ;D that was amazing!
You really don’t pay attention to subtitles sometimes lmao. They say something and then you ask the same question second later. For example 24:50 Hinata is saying how Noya look like a star in their switched colours uniforms and then u ask if this is first time they have orange on.
They play every day ! It's super hard
My favorite game of the whole manga is about To start !
Here we go !
i am so hype for this match. definitely the best most hype match of haikyuu so far
THAT HALF TIME!!!!!! OMG COACH!! YOU TWO SPOIL US SO MUCH THANK YOU!!!!
Kageyama called Hitana human tangerine coz he's all way down orange...haha..
I can’t help but crack up every time an episode ends and you don’t realize it
fun fact about the Miya twins is that they make a few metaphors using food and their names actually mean hunger and contentment.
THANK YOU FOR THE HALF TIME JAMES I HAVE NEVER LOVED ANYTHING MORE
Seeing Saori Kimura flashed on the screen got me real gooosebumpssss. but yap, it is intentional, the character is inspired of Japan's National team's former captain.
COACH THAT SERVE WAS AMAZING!!
Finally we see Kita, this man is my 2nd favorite character of the show, I can't express how much he changed my viewing on my own life. But i love him so much
Light and overall quality was on point! Thanks for the half time video!
"We don't need memories" is the most badass motto!
That water bottle segment! When you spoke about *the* scene, I squealed in advance!
I'm surprised coach remembers hoshiumi's name lol, his muscle memory for hq is getting better Also miya atsumu hand gesture before serve was really cool i gasped watching this the first time
I LOVE how you can see the ball wiggle and shake in mid air when he float served it in the half time scene.
Been waiting for the Inarizaki match, it's rewatch worthy.
im so excited for coachs journey thru this inarizki match
one time I played against two brothers, one was a great setter, and the other a great hitter, and some of their plays they put together were mind-boggling, the one I remember best was when the setter had to run in and back set a quick to his brother with one hand. It's really amazing to see how the personal connection between people can transport to the court.
Honestly hitting that bottle was so cool, but even if you slightly missed it would’ve been great since you can’t fully control a float anyways
This is the last episode before season cut. There was a break between when ep 13 and 14 aired. Part 2 of this season is where animation gets more... lets say wild.
