Reason for neko and nohebi playing is because three team spots are available to make it to nationals. Tokyo being a large region allows for 2 teams to go to nationals, and since the region is also hosting the nationals, a sponsored placement is also allowed. Which is the game currently being played between neko and nohebi. Great reaction coach!
@@HaiderAli-mq1rs no it's actually correct, that's "allows for 2" since it's Tokyo. and the "Sponsored placement" in the sentence is the +1 and that makes it 3.
Normally each prefecture only gets 1 school representative in nationals. But big prefectures like Hokkaido, Osaka, and especially Tokyo get 2 schools. That's why Itachiyama and Fukorodani will advance. Since Tokyo is hosting this year's national they get an extra school. That's the Nohebi vs. Nekoma fight
Fun fact: Taishi Onodera, a middle blocker of Japan national team, is from Miyagi prefecture and went to Tohoku high school which is the model of Shiratorizawa. When he was a student, Furudate (manga artist of Haikyuu) sensei came to his school for research and he and his teammate were very excited that their school is seen in Haikyuu. He also mentioned that he was like Hyakuzawa because he was tall and started playing volleyball from high school, but his recent data-based play style is more like Tsukishima.
Hi Coach! About S04, it's not a particular animator that changed. It was the mostly whole main staff! Haikyuu TO THE TOP came out 4 years after S03. With that, the old staff move on and start to working on new projects. But i will bring two nomes of the previous staff that were surely missed in S04 Takahiro Chiba, the Chief Animation Director for the previous 3 seasons. Without his amazing supervision on the drawings, there was a need of making de design of the character more "simple", to still have a fluid animation. His absence in this season was sure the most missed. Susumu Mitsunaka, the previous series director. As you saw in S01-02-03, Susumu Mitsunaka was perfect for Haikyuu. The way that he manage the series, nobody would be so good and fit as him. The new director is good to (She was episode director for S03E04, the episode where Tsuki blocked Ushiwaka. With that you know that are in good hands) About the new staff, don't worry. There are a lot of new talents in this season that you will love! The schedule this season was tight, having as consequence a full outsourced episode for other studio. And it's in this episode that mostly of the memes are. But you will have a great time anyways! Haikyuu S04 it's not a masterpiece in terms of direction and animation like S01-02-03, but still gave us something really good with top tier moments. Hope that you enjoy! If you wanna know more about Haikyuu previous staff and the actual, here a perfect article: blog.sakugabooru.com/2020/02/04/the-evolution-of-haikyuus-exceptional-production-refining-reality/
27:40 is such a cool moment. Bokuto bought that shirt at the venue for the last Spring tournament Nationals. Hinata says "I want that shirt too!" and Bokuto replies "Then go to the Nationals and get it yourself." Bokuto is such a sportsman.
@@Aisluin personally, I think Hinata's abilities don't even matter to Bokuto. He's saying "if you want it, then get so good that you can go to nationals and get it yourself." That's a theme I see consistently in Haikyuu, doesn't matter if you aren't good now, just get better and catch up. The beauty of it is that characters like Hinata persevere and make it because they're so passionate and take Bokuto's words as motivation.
You may have missed it at 23:42, but Yamamoto's little sister Akane isn't actually attracted to Lev, she's just attracted to really good volleyball plays. While Lev's sister is having her inner monologue about Akane and Lev getting married, Lev completely whiffs a regular serve and hits the ball out, and Akane's facial expression immediately turns back to looking completely disappointed, haha.
Man, it never fails to make me tear up whenever that scene with Ushijima says "I'm counting on you" to Goshiki. It's a simple scene but it hits like a truck.
11:57 Funny thing is that this OVA uses the "S4 art style" and it's just as appropriate because when this took place in the manga, it already looked similar to this. You'll notice how the hairs look fuller and the eyes look a bit bigger. Maybe a bit more simplified. One of the most noticeable hovewer is Bokuto looking more muscular compared to Season 2. His face makes more sense if you ask me.
I have to disagree with that. This OVA doesn't match S4 at all. S4 looks more rough, whereas this OVA is very cleanly drawn. I understand you placed quotes around "S4 art style", but it's still fairly misleading when saying that considering how widely different they actually are.
@@spin.chicken This litterally is S4's artstyle though. S4 pt.2 ≠ S4 I agree that the pt.2 looks more rough than this, but the 1st part is very similar to this
@@spin.chicken Have you actually look at Bokuto's or each and everyone's character sheet for Season 4? Their design from their character sheet and here look exactly the same. When I mentiond the term "art style" I am referring to the character design and nothing more. I know about the low-quality outsourced animation and I think that's what you interpreted from my comment but that's a different story.
4:06 Tendo's probably one of my favorite non-Kurasuno characters. Shiratorizawa is such a team of SUPER try-hard kids from a wealthy private school who take volleyball super seriously. Which to an extent is a great, competitive spirit. But I love that Tendo is the one guy who kinda pops the balloon of self-importance and is encouraging everyone to chill the hell out and laugh once in a while. You need that in a person.
I can totally agree with you! Tendo's also one of my fave non-Karasuno characters. He's honest, doesn't judge any person based on appearance and status, and he's really a nice and fun friend to be around. Adding to this is the fact that he'll be doing nice actions in the S4 episodes.
Fun detail: Because the anime was produced while the manga was still development, some character and school designs were not yet finalised. We were actually introduced to Sakusa Kiyoomi (the curly haired guy on the upper left of the poster at 4:40 and Itachiyama Institute way way back in Season 2. But because his design was not finalised (even in the manga!) he was given a backshot as a straight-haired guy with a purple uniform. Even up till as late as the end of Season 3 in the ending credits, Itachiyama Institute was still sporting a purple coloured banner. But as of the Land vs Air OVA, the design is now finalised with curly-haired Sakusa and the neon yellow-green school banner.
Hey, Coach! 😊 Something you might not have put together is that when Bokuto "forgot" how to hit cross shots, that wasn't just coincidence -- it was a deliberate tactic/manipulation from Kenma. During one of the team huddles, Kenma tells the rest of Nekoma to _allow_ Bokuto to get comfortable hitting line before they shut it down. He was hoping to back Bokuto into a corner like that: making him get into a groove and then taking that option away so he struggles. And it worked! Kenma is, without a doubt, Nekoma's brain.
Hey coach, The tournament of nationals works so that 2 teams from Tokyo get to go (Both Finalists), but since they are also hosting nationals, they have an extra team slot for 3rd place which is why Nekoma are still trying very hard. Also, thx for watching the OVA's. Love getting you opinion on these episodes
When Nekoma's coach says endurance is their strength, he's saying mentally they can be very persistent. They don't fall into the temptation to make flashy plays, they look at their teamwork and game plan in the long term(Tsukishima also adopted from learning under Kuroo). That is why Lev, given his child-like personality and inexperience in volleyball is dissatisfied at this strategy lol
I want to mention that the players look more muscular because the manga author's drawing style evolved throughout the manga publication period. The author has admirable skill to how they present information and make the stationary drawings of each and every single technically arduous volleyball rally look fun and interesting to even non-volleyball players/fans. I hope one day Coach can check out a few manga panels from this Nekoma vs Fukurodani match or any future matches (the matches from the upcoming Spring tournament) to compare and give his insight!!
It's not just about the mangaka improving. If you think about it by season four Hinata has been in Karasuno for 10 month (story started in april and nationals is in january) so it's natural for the characters to look a bit more muscular and taller.
@@az639 yes, I agree. However by that logic, ALL the seniors should look like how hinata looks now from the beginning of the series. Which is why I attributed the change in style to an evolution in drawing skill.
I always love it when we see how patient Nekoma is with their tactics, especially coming from Kenma who doesn’t really exert himself when playing and from Kuroo who’s very different
Kuroo isn't the exact opposite, that's actually Hinata. Kenma and Kuroo are actually quite similar, they're both super smart, and they're both extremely good players which is something quite overlooked for Kenma. Most people just assume he's smart, but he's actually quite a good receiver and he's a really good setter of course. He's also pretty decent at blocks. The main difference in their play is that Kuroo is better than Kenma is areas like Receives and Blocks. Kuroo is very tactical, and you can see the difference between Kenma and Kuroo sure, but they're not exact opposites. The opposite to Kenma is Hinata
@@Gotothelui Yes, Kuroo and Kenma are complimentary rather than being contrasting. Kenma exceeds n setting, Kuroo in blocking. In effect, they have the same playstyle-- patient, tactical, smart.
@@Bee-vu6ye Yup! In the only volley match I've been to so far, the other team was a trash-talk one. Didn't love it, it was pretty annoying, tho it didn't bother me in the sense of botching my plays, I just wanted them to... SHHHHH lmaooo
Elevate Yourself AKA the only UA-cam channel can react to Haikyuu's storytelling, volleyball skills and animation techniques at the same time. Coach Donny is definitely one of those who can enjoy Haikyuu in every detail.
His reaction vids is good for class discussions too. Actually, watching his haikyuu reaction vids was much more educational than my whole high school pe
12:39 I think the banner normally summarizes the team so well that you can tell how they'll play just by looking at it, especially a certain team that's coming up ;p
I'm glad you watched the extra Shiratorizawa scene! Through all of your reactions, I really appreciate how understanding you've been with them. They're my favorite team and I understand why many people dislike them since they're considered one of the main antagonists, but there's a lot of depth to them too and at the end of the day, all of these teams are working hard towards the same goal. Also, kudos to Editor-san! Their editing has been top notch and I appreciate all the hard work they've put into it!
Can we just appreciate how reliable of a setter Akaashi is? Him going in and saying "I'll open up the path for you" and going out of his way to help Bokuto get out of his rut. That's a team player right there.
I read this a long time ago, so feel free to correct me if I'm getting it wrong: Tokyo is a large city with a lot of schools so they usually get 2 representative teams in national tournaments. Additionally, Tokyo will be hosting the national tournament this year, so they also get an extra host representative. Since Itachiyama and Fukurodani made it to the qualifier finals, they will now compete for 1st and 2nd seeds in the games at Nationals. Nohebi and Nekoma will compete to decide who will be the host representative team.
Just to answer the last 2 questions: I think it’s called land vs air cause it’s Nekoma (the cats) vs Fukorodani (the owls), so land animal vs sky animal. Also Nekoma also has a really strong Defence and Fukorodani has a really good Offence The Tokyo prefecture is bigger than the Miyagi prefecture (where karasuno/Seijoh/shiratorizawa/etc are) so tokyo can have 2 teams go to nationals, whereas Miyagi can only have 1. However Tokyo is hosting nationals that year, so they get an extra team in the tournament, so the four teams are playing for the 3 spots. Itachiyama and Fukorodani both won their first match so they are through to nationals, and now the two teams (Nekoma and Nohebi) that lost the first match play for the last spot
Wow the editor is awesome ahaha Daichi sliding in the screen, using text texture and colors similar to Haikyuu, the scene at 17:58 "NISU BLOQUE" ahaha and the transition from the end of the episode to the outro, everything is so well done, congrats for both the editor for getting the job and to the coach for getting a great editor to wotk for him.
In 17:20 coach says that he loved the lines over the eyes from Kuro's realization and you will be happy to know we have a lot of those during S4!!! Also shoutouts to the editor, seems to have a lot of fun with the work you give 'em!!!
Just to clarify, Coach, Tokyo gets three representatives at nationals. Two for its size and a third for hosting. So the top three teams in Tokyo’s prefectural qualifiers get to go to nationals, which is what Nohebi and Nekoma are competing for, after their losses to Itachiyama and Fukurodani, respectively.
Title & Tournament Explanation! Title: “Land vs Air” is referring to the mascots of the teams. Nekoma Cats(Neko in Japanese) are land and the Fukurodani Owls(Fukuro in Japanese) are air! Tournament: The prefecture (kind of like a county in a big state) that Nekoma & Fukurodani are in is WAY bigger than the one our Karasuno boys are in. These teams are in the Tokyo area which always gets to send 2 teams nationals. This year Tokyo is hosting the nationals so they get to send an extra team. The tournament we’re watching is choosing those 3 teams out of the top 4 in the prefecture so it’s a double elimination. The teams that won their game already know they’re going to nationals so story wise, we’re worried about whether or not Nekoma gets to go😁 Can’t wait to see you reaction next week!!!
"a lot of crying in this anime" that is the case when the anime doesn't have any death moments like other anime, haikyuu just lets you see different emotions when playing and dedicating yourself to a sport. very beautiful
Someone once said that every Haikyuu team has someone (usually the captain) that takes on at least a semi-parental role and manages the rest of the teammates, but fukurodani is a team made up of parents and the captain is the single child they're all trying to manage LOL
At 11:43 Coach Donny actually makes the same point about Bokuto's personality which if you remember in season 2 as is also the reason he is ranked as the no.4 Ace, they view his personality and mood swings as inconsistency as player
I would like to add on that Itachiyama was actually mentioned as a powerhouse school with Sakusa as the nation's top 3 ace way back in S2 ep 11 at around 13:55
I've always though Land vs Air was a commentary on the two aspects of defense, namely Blocking vs Digging. Nekoma is a very defensive focused team, and the major conflict of the story is Lev helping to fit into and understand the interplay between the two. Something that also got brought up in S3 with Tsuki, but they like to focus on the point that blocking is about more than just getting in from of every ball and slamming it down. Blocking can also be about taking up space, guiding the opponents into hitting it where you want it, and trusting your back-line to dig the ball. Kuroo has shown to be very good at this and a big advocate for it, which makes sense since Yaku (Nekoma Libero) is a friend who he trusts to dig the ball. Yaku also yelled at Lev for not playing this way, specifically calling him out for flailing around and making it harder for Yaku to see instead of trusting his Libero.
The reason it's called Land vs Air is because of their "mascots". Nekoma being cats and Fukurodani being Owls. The way the the spring tournament works is that every prefecture or "state" in Japan has a tournament and then the winners of those go to Tokyo to compete in Nationals. Depending on the population of the prefecture they are either allowed 1 or 2 spots. Miyagi prefecture, where Karasuno are from, is only allowed 1 spot. Since Tokyo, where Nekoma and Fukurodani are from is so dense in population, they are allowed 2 spots for nationals (+1 extra spot since Tokyo is the host city).
This sort of strategy happens a lot when playing fighting games competitively, where you already know what your next adaptation is going to be, but you hold off on actually implementing the adaptation until your opponent gets too comfortable, or until a crucial moment in the match.
The banner for Fukurodani actually had alot to do with Tsuki and Bokuto moment in season 2. It's about how you just need "one moment (or one ball) and you get addicted to volleyball (you let it into your soul).
because tokyo is so big in comparison to places like miyagi, and they’ll be hosting the nationals, they get to have three teams play - two of them are fukurodani and itachiyama, so their game doesn’t have very high stakes, and the third is a ‘sponsor representative’ which will be decided between nohebi and nekoma in this match!
A little info: Season 3 (2016) and Season 4 including this OVA (2020) are actually 3-4 years apart. Meaning, the anime went on a 4 years hiatus. The reason is that the anime was close on catching up from the manga, the original source of Haikyuu. When Season 3 last episode which is episode 10 was aired, the manga was just on the first part of what Season 4 will cover so there's no content to animate so they decided to let the manga release more chapters so that they could have more content to animate in the future. They released season 4 when the manga was working on its last final arc. Also, It's a 4 years hiatus so some directors and animators that handled haikyuu before have gone and are busy with some new projects that's why you'll see many big changes from the animation. Changes are also evident from the voices of these characters but not that much.. just minor ones. 4 year gap was crazy for me and I remember myself at 2017 really losing hope for Season 4 but here it is after 4 years lol. It's nice that you won't have to go through that kind of pain haha. I hope you'd enjoy Season 4, coach! So many amazing scenes and moments and so much character developments! Hope you enjoy watching again! I look forward to your remaining reactions!
I love the detail where Bokuto throws his jacket into the air as he enters and it's Akashi of all people that's right there to catch it. He's always there to support his boy
Coach : * describes perfectly what Fukurodani and Nekoma are, down to the mascots of the teams (cats and owls) * "I didn't really see any of that in this episode"
Wow, the OVA's reaction is here! Thanks coach! Btw, I love how your new editor editing your video.. very creative and had sense of humor, vibe check passed! 😊
great reactions and I love that you aren't dismissing the Nohebi style right away! Trash talking isn't the most elegant way to gain an upper hand, but the mental aspect of sports that you mentioned can absolutely be a game changer! I also wanna toss some love towards the new editor(s) because they've been doing splendid work! It's really fun and helpful to see relevant images or explanations on screen, and very cute adding the shout marks when Coach said "nice block" at 17:58. Such great work everyone!
Coach it's the first reactor that i've seen excited for Nohebi's trash talk playstyle, usually reactors tend to be mad at them without giving them a chance. Really excited to see what he'll think about it next episode.
Your comment about having confidence with over passes is exactly how I feel about flipping an egg/omelette in the frying pan. If I'm not confident then I mostly fail, but if I'm confident, I'll usually make the flip.
Hello Coach! Just to add onto Kuroo's red-eyed focus when he blocked Bokuto, the two coloured lights which follow Kuroo's eyes are not new to Haikyuu. In fact, whenever a character (normally a middle blocker) demonstrates good read blocking, their eyes gain that laser-like after-image (Aone 'No-Eyebrows' from Date Tech, Tsukki and Kuroo).
Yaku (Nekomas libero) is one of the top 3 libero's in the country There are 3 spots available in tokyo region to qualify to nationals (because of more teams in that prefecture) 2 spots originaly 3rd spot is a special position because Tokyo is the place hosting nationals this year Fukurodani and Itachiyama already qualified Nekoma and Noheibi are fighting for the 3rd place to qualify as the last chance
Yes, the best epic hit or catch returns at the end of the video, great reaction, new insights into animation details, and waiting for the next reaction, Coach Donny.
Actually there were 3 spots for Nationals in this tournament. If they reach the finals (as Itachiyama and Fukurodani did) they would have automatically earned the spot, but since Nekoma lost their only chance would be to win the second game against Nohebi and earn the bronze medal.
I think it's called land vs. air because of the game between nekoma and fukurodani. nekoma specializes in defense and fukurodani are more offensive. also, nekoma's mascot is a cat (a land animal) and fukurodani's mascot is the owl (an "air" animal).
That Shiratorizawa scene always get me so emotional. 😭 Partly bc Ushijima is THE top guy and despite being very blunt, you can tell he actually cares about his teammates. But also can you imagine being in Goshiki’s position and how you’d feel after he said that to you 😭 (But mainly bc if Goshiki cries, I cry)
I love how when compared to other sports anime Haikyuu is generally a lot more realistic in terms of techniques and characters but then you have Bokuto and he's just a straight up Looney Toon
It is interesting that you mentioned the amount of people in fukurodani and nekoma. Haikyuu is not just a story about volleyball, it's also a story of meritocracy and how powerhouses are closely connected to money and the privilege that comes with it. For example, Karasuno is from a rural area in Japan and they have to self-fund and need help from the whole neighborhood while Fukurodani is from Tokyo which gets a lot more funding and thus a bigger name and roster. Shiratorizawa is a private school so they don't have this problem. These powerhouses not only can afford having this big teams but also attract the best players because of this. You mentioning the difference in the lineup has to do with this, in the end. I think this just adds yet another layer of depth to Karasuno because of how much more work they have to put in in order to compete at higher levels and how everything they achieve is all that more satisfying!
Coach i highly recommend reading the manga chapters that this ova adapted. This game is honestly super underrated and its mostly cause of the stuff that was cut from the anime.
Hello Coach! Thanks so much for the reaction videos! There is one special feature for Haikyuu that was made that I think you would enjoy watching. It is called "Special Feature! The Spring Tournament of their youth". They interview some of the schools from the tournament. I hope you get a chance to watch it. Thanks again for all your reaction videos!!!
I didn't know that there was so much hate for the season 4 animation. There is definitely a big stylistic change to bring the character designs a bit more in line with the manga (The manga art is famously idiosyncratic), but I think the fluidity of the animation is as good as in any other season.
The first part of season 4 is still very solid but the second part is very rough & unpolished overall and I'm not even particularly detail oriented. However we can probably blame Covid for that so my hopes are high for season 5 to be a more like part 1 and not as rushed. I really hope they take their time with it and make it with care.
Bonus fact: Team itachiyama who played fukurodani in the finals has kiyoomi sakusa who is one of the top 3 aces in Japan along with ushijima wakatoshi, wakatshi kieyu
Glad to see Choach Donny actually appreciating some good ol trash talk :D Some people may see it as "dirty" play but I think it's just a fine part of the game, as long as it's not overly toxic.
Fukurodani's slogan (that is associated with Bokuto through the entire story) is to pour all your soul into each ball. This is the most inspiring type of player to me, and I think is part of why Bokuto is consistently put as a top ace by Furudate
I think Bokuto is the team captain because: 1) he's an awesome player; 2) While he's indeed moody, he recovers super quickly from it (with the help of his team); 3) he's such an inspiration, not only for his team, but even for his opponents. When you have a guy that just lights a fire in everyone on you team, I think you'd want him to be your captain.
He is the captain bc he needs to be, Bokuto would feel bad if he wasn't. I think that is an ep on season 2 that says something about it. He isn't the real captain and that's ok bc Fukuroudani players are all mature and don't need one.
@@irwingbrasil I'm not sure if you have read the manga, but if you have you would know that Bokuto is captain bc he deserves to be captain. His teammates state in the manga and in season 2 that Bokuto is reliable, talented, strong, and is able to reset the team and give them that lift when everyone else has lost hope. His teammates say that Akashi doesnt need to worry about Bokuto bc he will pull himself together and quickly. The overshow for his moodiness i think is to show how incredibly talented this team is and I think that's to set up how well they end up doing at nationals. If you read further in the manga you will see how effective Bokuto is as a captain and leader.
@@CJ-pj7uw i read the manga after inarizaki game (season 4) i know he grows as a person and become more mature in the future. I didn't read the manga of season 2 but so i got this idea from the anime, i might be wrong If the manga makes it clear.
Started watching coach Donny's reactions to Haikyuu after seeing the collaboration with Victoria Garrick and holly cow, can't believe I caught up on a years worth of reacts in just a few weeks and am now up to date. Excited for the next one but not going to lie, a little bummed that I can't just binge watch 2 or 3 in a row anymore... suppose this will free up some time for me to be more productive lol
Hey Coach, you mentioned the different animator for the OVA episode, but I just wanted to let you know that this is actually the new animation style for season 4! Be prepared so see more animation like this in the future, although it can be pretty inconsistent at times. Also, Coach, when you thought that there was only one more slot for Nationals, that was actually intended to mean one more slot from Nekoma vs. Nohebi. The top four teams were fighting for 3 slots to nationals, not 1, so Itatchiyama and Fukurodani had already secured their slots in nationals from the previous round. Nekoma and Nohebi are fighting for the third slot. I can't wait to see the second half of this OVA reaction.
A sieve is the net thingy you use in baking to sift the flour through so there's no lumps - basically a sieve is just a collection of holes for things to pass through, not really what we want our blockers to resemble
Hey coach, The tournament of nationals works so that 2 teams from Tokyo get to go (Both Finalists), but since they are also hosting nationals, they have an extra team slot for 3rd place which is why Nekoma are still trying very hard.
The animators for these OVAs are the same ones from season 4. So this is the point from where the animation and character designs are gonna change. Also the Land vs Air was a reference to the first match of Fukurodani vs Nekoma, where Nekoma is represented by cats and Fukurodani are owls. As far as the bracket goes Itachiyama vs Nohebi (off camera match) and Fukurodani vs Nekoma were the Tokyo regional semi finals, where Itachiyama and Fukurodani went on to the finals with their respective wins. And Tokyo being a big prefecture gets 2 spots in nationals, so those 2 spots are already decided by the end of the semi finals, since both teams in finals qualify for nationals. The 'last spot' that Nekoma were talking about was the extra spot available to Tokyo prefecture for being the host city for the Nationals this year. Hence Nekoma is going up against Nohebi for that last spot in the 3rd place play off match in the 2nd OVA.
I don't know if you've ever realized this or anyone has told you this, but in my memory every single team is based on an animal and usually at least one of their players has something that sort of resembles the animal the team is based on, usually their main or best player. So fukurodani for example has fukuro in the name which means owl and bokuto's looks are sort of based on an owl, especially his eyes. Same with nekoma, with neko meaning cat and kenma kind of looking like a cat. Almost all teams have something like this, you'll definitely see more of this later on. I'd say karasuno is a bit of an exception, they are all essentially crows, an animal that is weak by itself, but strong in numbers. (Edit) The teams that are based on birds are usually based on places or buildings in japan. Aoba johsai is a castle for example
It's far from "every single team" being based on an animal. Aoba Johsai, Date Tech, Johzenji, Wakutani Minami, Ubugawa, Shinzen, Ohgiminami, Tokonami, Kakugawa, Tsubakihara, Niiyama are all examples of teams that have nothing to do with animals.
@@mantaren Oh yeah i think the rest are named based on some sort of buildings, like aoba johsai translates to ”blue castle” or maybe ”light blue castle” and date tech is obviously a wall, a lot of the other teams players names are based on locations in their prefecture.
I’m sure you’ve already noticed this, but each team has a “mascot” animal associated with their school (*karasu*no crows, *shiratori*zawa doves, etc). The reason it is called “land vs air” is because of the match between the *fukurou*dani owls and *neko*ma cats.
I believe Tokyo always has 2 representatives for the nationals (unlike Miyagi with 1 rep). The prefecture that hosts the nationals get to have another slot and this year, Tokyo hosts the spring interhigh. Hence, 2 usual reps from Tokyo + 1 host rep = 3 Tokyo representatives. Nekoma is vying for the host rep slot.
Loved this reaction, I completely agree that being in a team sport is beneficial, strengthening bonds, working together and going through a lot as a team is a wonderful experience. Thank you coach for continuing to make great, in depth reactions, much appreciated
I wouldn’t call the animation quality of season 4 “poor”. It’s just different since they really tried to match the manga so stuff that looked detailed before will look awkward because it looks the same in the manga. But don’t worry, there are pieces of animation that you can definitely looking forward to
thats what i've been saying, season 4 style is definetly the one closest to the manga edit: there definelty are some weak episodes tho (in terms of animation)
Dude have u watched "to the top 1&2"? The style may be more similar to the manga I give u that (and yes I read it) but the animations are dropping hard ...it is not fluent at all compared to all seasons before that. Some people compare it to Fanfiction YT-Vids or the last season of 7DS xD
@@dangmb011dpn7 agreed, the animation in to the top 1 and 2 was less fluid, but comparing it to fan animations is going too far, after all except the the few out sourced episodes, the rest were animated well, especially scenes like the final rally etc.
Let's not forget that season 4 was produced during the pandemic. They reused a lot of scenes and even outsourced one episode (which is the only poorly animated episode of this season btw) because of that.
But it's not the s4 artstyle why people complain. It's the animation quality the thing that dropped. But people notice more that the artstyle changed and don't really have that much knowledge in how anime works so they just blame it to the artstyle. But you can literally watch the openings for S4 and see the full potential of the s4 artstyle, if the series had that level of animation no one would complain about the "artstyle" (it's obviously not realistic, the animation quality in the openings it's just not doable for a full season)
Hey coach! Here's the explanation about the importance of the match between Nekoma and Nohebi and the name of the OVA. For Nationals every prefecture gets one spot, but as Tokyo is one of the biggest ones, they get two, so the finalists are the ones who go to Nationals. Also as the Nationals will be held in Tokyo, they get one more representative, that's why the match between Nekoma and Nohebi matters, because they're trying to get that third spot. Also the name Land vs Air might be a reference to the fact that Nekoma is represented by cats and Fukurodani as Owls as you could see during the (not so) half-time scene. But your analogy about one team with a really good defense keeping the ball in play (Nekoma) and the other team always spiking and winning those air battles on the net (Fukurodani, thanks to Bokuto mainly) is on point.
I'm really all in for this new editing style. The pop-ups really sells it out As always, thanks for the insightful reaction coach! This episode really holds a special spot for a lot of fans (me included) because this was like the the first episode after Haikyuu came back from a 4 year hiatus after season 3. I love the fact that they did the art style a lot closer to the manga, so I really have no complains on that. The change in animation was not quite bad for this one, even if people noticed, they didn't complain much. But that's mainly because by the time this OVA got released, most were just really glad that the anime finally released new content. Sadly, the animation does get noticeably worse. I just really hope the story progression makes up for it. I wish you good luck on the next reactions!
It's been 3 to 4 videos that i'm seeing people complaining s4 animation and its sort of becoming a trend to comment about that again and again. I would like coach to decide himself if the animation is good or bad when he reacts to S4. We all know animators had a hard time animating the season but like heck it made the impact of s4 any less, people still enjoyed it. I worry that we might ruin S4 for coach even before he reacts by lowering his expectation so coach i would like you to somewhat ignore this animation comments and check out what S4 has to offer yourself. Thank you for the reactions :)
He'll definitely make his mind up for himself. Coach Donny has been organically commenting on design and animation since season one, and is always incredibly objective, so I'm really eager to hear his thoughts.
@@pppeachezify I think it's impossible to stay completely unbiased when you've had a certain thought/bias constantly hammered into your head for months. But we can hope!
Hey Coach, two things (one you asked for and one fun fact): The tournament system for Land vs. Air is that it was a full tournament to get to the Top 4, but the seats for Nationals take the Top 3. That's why Kuroo mentioned winning in the semifinals guaranteed a nationals spot because they were Top 2 that way, but losing to Fukurodani meant they were now playing for 3rd place. The way teams get spots for Nationals depends on their prefecture, with larger prefectures getting additional seats. Tokyo naturally gets two, but being the host for the Nationals tournament means they get an additional spot (kinda like the World Cup host team getting an automatic seat). This was covered more explicitly in the manga. Another aspect that the manga highlights but the anime doesn't is how Nohebi (whose mascots are snakes) are capable of actual underhanded tactics. The anime mentions them having the ref wrapped around their finger, but doesn't show at least one point where they finesse a poor line call in their favor by playing to the officials, something we haven't seen in any of the seasons yet. The anime instead highlights how they're a good enough team to get to the semis based on skill, but doesn't acknowledge the less savory methods a team can get away with to improve their odds.
7:30 notice how his 1st comment on the animation is positive. But you guys have hammered into his head the idea that it's a straight downgrade throughout, so that's gonna be in the back of his mind for all 25 episodes. It would have been better to let the literal animator naturally come to his own conclusions
@Runny Anime アニメ come on, there are weaker points but it has good moments too, and it was fixed for blu ray, can we just appreciate the staff a little more since they were working in difficult conditions
@Runny Anime アニメ Don't ignore the last sentence in my comment. He can decide how he likes it on his own rather than people telling him how he should feel about it months before he gets there and even sending screenshots of the worst stuff. What's the point? It's basically the same as giving spoilers
Right?? This is exactly what I was thinking! I'm tired of people bombarding reactors with how bad season four's animation is long before they even get to the season, especially when they comment on good animation in seasons 1-3. Coach is already looking for poor animation in an OVA that doesn't have the "terrible animation" that people are talking about. Plus, then they don't enjoy the story as much because they're so focused on looking for bad animation. It's so frustrating. I'm glad someone else was thinking this and said this.
@@Singingtater24 yeahhh, I watched s4 before I knew the majority says it's bad but I thoroughly enjoy the season, sure there were some scenes where I was questioning why they look weird (the outsourced scenes apparently) but overall I thought it was really awesome since I love character developments more than the animation, especially for both kageyama and hinata. inconsistencies are just inconsistencies, it doesn't mean the whole thing is bad. So to say the whole season is bad is straight up a lie from people who don't like changes at all. I hope coach can watch it with less bias views instead of analyzing which part is "bad animation" because surely those thoughts will come naturally when he sees it
The "nice! Blockkuuu" from Coach Donny had me laughing. Nice touch with the animation editor. Great video reaction from Coach as well! Always enjoy rewatching this anime with you
The OVA is in the season 4 animation style, which is why it looks so different. I'm probably gonna get shit for this, but honestly certain characters look better in the new animation style even if it isn't entirely consistent.
I actually like the new style a lot. It looks more like the manga and the hype scenes look way more fluid then before. It also shows how much the characters changed in about almost a year by this point in the story. They look more muscular and slightly taller. There are only 2 episodes that don't look the best because they needed to outsource them because of the pandemic.
finally someone who thinks so, I was like "is there anyone who likes it other than me?" because all I see is people hating it, honestly they don't look half as bad as everyone makes it seem and some of them definitely got better
Loved your tips about warmups at 26:30 - I haven’t been thinking about that, and am going to do that next game! It makes a lot of sense and is a great insight. Thanks:)

Hi Coach! About S04, it's not a particular animator that changed. It was the mostly whole main staff! Haikyuu TO THE TOP came out 4 years after S03. With that, the old staff move on and start to working on new projects. But i will bring two nomes of the previous staff that were surely missed in S04
Takahiro Chiba, the Chief Animation Director for the previous 3 seasons.
With that you know that are in good hands)
About the new staff, don't worry.

S1 has the weakest direction in my opinion. For me it goes like S3>S2>S4>S1.

@@YMasterS Oh, i imagined! I just want to let him know that S04 had huge changes in the staff
27:40 is such a cool moment. Bokuto bought that shirt at the venue for the last Spring tournament Nationals. Hinata says "I want that shirt too!" and Bokuto replies "Then go to the Nationals and get it yourself." Bokuto is such a sportsman.
No doubt in hinata’s ability- just tells him to go to the tournament. Great character moment for Boktuo.
It's so encouraging for Hinata to. It's like "You want this shirt? Then win all your matches so you can get one"
While Lev's sister is having her inner monologue about Akane and Lev getting married, Lev completely whiffs a regular serve and hits the ball out, and Akane's facial expression immediately turns back to looking completely disappointed, haha.
the way ushiwaka’s facial expression softens a bit before telling Goshiki “I’m counting on you”
🥺😭😭
S4 pt.2 ≠ S4
I agree that the pt.2 looks more rough than this, but the 1st part is very similar to this

You need that in a person.
hahah they do give off that air of private school elitism don’t they
I can totally agree with you! Tendo's also one of my fave non-Karasuno characters. He's honest, doesn't judge any person based on appearance and status, and he's really a nice and fun friend to be around. Adding to this is the fact that he'll be doing nice actions in the S4 episodes.

Fun detail:
Because the anime was produced while the manga was still development, some character and school designs were not yet finalised.
OOOOHHHH So that's why it was different and I could never find one of those top 3 aces! That makes a lot of sense.

Hey coach,
The tournament of nationals works so that 2 teams from Tokyo get to go (Both Finalists), but since they are also hosting nationals, they have an extra team slot for 3rd place which is why Nekoma are still trying very hard.

Oh, well today I learned, so the hosting prefecture gets an extra team slot… nice! Oh and also Up*
When Nekoma's coach says endurance is their strength, he's saying mentally they can be very persistent.

@@Gotothelui yeah in the stats for kenma in "technique" is maximum (same as kageyama) in the manga
@@Gotothelui Yes, Kuroo and Kenma are complimentary rather than being contrasting. Kenma exceeds n setting, Kuroo in blocking. In effect, they have the same playstyle-- patient, tactical, smart.

Just to answer the last 2 questions:
I think it’s called land vs air cause it’s Nekoma (the cats) vs Fukorodani (the owls), so land animal vs sky animal. Also Nekoma also has a really strong Defence and Fukorodani has a really good Offence
The Tokyo prefecture is bigger than the Miyagi prefecture (where karasuno/Seijoh/shiratorizawa/etc are) so tokyo can have 2 teams go to nationals, whereas Miyagi can only have 1.
Also fukurodani has great offense while nekoma have great defense

The teams that won their game already know they’re going to nationals so story wise, we’re worried about whether or not Nekoma gets to go😁
Can’t wait to see you reaction next week!!!

Coach's thinking of offense (air) vs defense (land) matches the story too, its taken from the title of the manga chapter 195 covering this arc! :)
The irony that coach Donny mentions Fukurodani's roster when throughout the anime Fukurodani only features their starting 6
Fukurodani's banner basically means giving everything to every play you make.
It's nice that you won't have to go through that kind of pain haha. great reactions and I love that you aren't dismissing the Nohebi style right away!
So many little edit highlights 🙌
Yaku (Nekomas libero) is one of the top 3 libero's in the country
There are 3 spots available in tokyo region to qualify to nationals (because of more teams in that prefecture)
2 spots originaly
3rd spot is a special position because Tokyo is the place hosting nationals this year
Fukurodani and Itachiyama already qualified
Nekoma and Noheibi are fighting for the 3rd place to qualify as the last chance
Let's go boys and girls. Let's go!!! All the time waiting was worth it. Cheers from the Philippines
Yes, the best epic hit or catch returns at the end of the video, great reaction, new insights into animation details, and waiting for the next reaction, Coach Donny.
Gotta love the Haikyuu OVAs and post match scenes cause it gives more and better insight on the other teams play styles and mindset
I still love the Fukurodani team because of how much the team can support each other even when their ace isn’t at his best in a game
Actually there were 3 spots for Nationals in this tournament. If they reach the finals (as Itachiyama and Fukurodani did) they would have automatically earned the spot, but since Nekoma lost their only chance would be to win the second game against Nohebi and earn the bronze medal.
To editor #7 that put that urban dictionary definition when I needed it: I love you you're the best
But also can you imagine being in Goshiki’s position and how you’d feel after he said that to you 😭
(But mainly bc if Goshiki cries, I cry)
You and me both fam
season 4 is definitely my fave season so hopefully you get to enjoy it as well coach ^^
I love how when compared to other sports anime Haikyuu is generally a lot more realistic in terms of techniques and characters but then you have Bokuto and he's just a straight up Looney Toon
i love how they animated the players from Nohebi academy to actually resemble snakes, very cool
It's not just the animation, they cut a lot of stuff out
Sometimes when you pause there’s some goofy-looking faces or bodies, it’s just funny to see for me 😂
Ss4 is alright but not the best. But ss4 part 2 is disappointing.
The first part of season 4 is still very solid but the second part is very rough & unpolished overall and I'm not even particularly detail oriented. However we can probably blame Covid for that so my hopes are high for season 5 to be a more like part 1 and not as rushed. I really hope they take their time with it and make it with care.

Glad to see Choach Donny actually appreciating some good ol trash talk :D Some people may see it as "dirty" play but I think it's just a fine part of the game, as long as it's not overly toxic.
As someone who loves Nohebi, I really hope he continues to appreciate them through the second episode. Reactors hardly ever like them at all.
Yes! It's realistic as part of competitive sports, and not the end of the world. Loved it as well.
It's season 4, not season 5.

Hey coach,
The tournament of nationals works so that 2 teams from Tokyo get to go (Both Finalists), but since they are also hosting nationals, they have an extra team slot for 3rd place which is why Nekoma are still trying very hard.
But don’t worry, there are pieces of animation that you can definitely looking forward to
thats what i've been saying, season 4 style is definetly the one closest to the manga
edit: there definelty are some weak episodes tho (in terms of animation)
Really good work from the editor. I think he edits in away the goes Really well with the coach's videos. Keep up the good work
The pop-ups really sells it out
As always, thanks for the insightful reaction coach!
Yeah, I think it's a bit too late for that, unfortunately. He's already looking for and commenting on what's not as good animation-wise.
Thanks:)
