I'm an Accounting post-grad student and Taxation is one of my majors. I am sharing this with all my classmates & friends!! This conversation has deepened the importance of understanding our Tax legislation, shuu...I wish everyone doing a PGDA(CTA) or aspiring CA(SA)'s could listen to this. So insightful, wow! Thank you Sizwe, please beg him to come back we need to GO DEEPER!!!
Keith, your opening line, is the nub of the issue. Sir, the government sees the fiscus as a bottomless pit full of never ending cash that can be thrown at any problem as long as it results in self enrichment
That was some fantastic and important conversation. I really Love his wide Perspective.. please have Him again Post the iindaba, it should be interesting.. Ayeye
A thought was triggered in my mind as your guest was speaking about Western revolutions occurring due to tax, and I remembered our very own Bambatha rebellion against tax in the early 1900s... thought I should put it out there.
Why is SA one of the highest taxed countries in the world? No wonder we have such a dismal ecomony and high unemployment rate. Business owners cannot afford to hire any staff and actually make a difference in the country due to exhaustive taxes.
Really interesting interview. I think his comment on inequality currently being driven by corruption and not requiring a redistribution solution was off though. We didn’t fully address this root cause in 1994, and it’s still haunting us today unfortunately. On top of all the other problems we have, which he’s outlined quite nicely
Stuff this we are taxed out of our ... And we are seeing nothing for it.. as we the middle class are getting hit the hardest, not the rich not the poor, we have to pay income tax, VAT pay for private security, schools and medical and hell no we don't need NHI we don't want it.
Im studying an international relations degree and I am sooooo over it already 🙄 this conversation really got me excited again... To learn more and to just explore the vast career opportunities there is in Fiscal policy. Nothing related to IR at all but this was fascinating ❤
Next time you must invite Thabo Mbeki to talk about his IFFs impact on African economy report. The entire continent is suffering as the result of Illicit Financial Flows
Nothing beats logical & sober thinking. Pragmatism. You can't replace that with the greatest rhetoric. The economy will always give you the bottom line🤷🏾♂️
If south africa really wants to move forward we need to get the third of the country that remains idle to get a job that pays tax. Also can this government find anything better to do with it's money than to give it away? Social grants are a massive waste of money and all they do is give a way for the bone idle to remain idle.
Sizwe, if you're going to the Tax Indaba you may want to swing by Stellenbosch to ask Ingrid Woolard to provide a rebuttal and defend the wealth tax. Unlike Keith, she's not just concerned with designing an elegant tax system, she's also concerned with poverty, inequality, unemployment and growth. Oh, and she's the dean of the economics faculty.
Good one !!! It’s great to hear a podcast delivered by an economic expert with broad experience, relatively free from ideology. This is an area that needs deep expertise and strong leadership. I’m not sure that endorsement of a capitalist tax system by a Marxist political party holds much water - cognitive dissonance is kicking hard - but let that one go for now. “The tax system and government policy are highly focused on redistribution- the problem is corruption” Gulp. Let’s respond to Gini by doing more “redistribution”? 😮
Government has definitely done a disastras job at electricity. Just because we havent had load shedding for a few months does not mean its a good job, and they are adding more costs for electricity. Well done to getting greedy politicians and advisers to lead the country.
I wish people could read the history of taxation and the surreptitious functions of tax laws. Ordinary man is paying tax they are not liable for, you have to understand keywords Tax = tribute ( to who?) Income = trade earnings ( for businesses not natural beings) Employer = Master Employee = servant Vat = tax for vendors ( not natural persons) etc… Problem is people don’t understand how to change their legal status and are liable for obligations they shouldn’t be. Wake up and study this system it is a sophisticated plantation but it’s still a plantation nevertheless. Your power is in the private, tax is for the public and people confound and conflate the two. The rich understand this.
The ANC is gone and finished and Cyril he loves to promise empty promises keeps people holding up high on nothing just empty and while things getting worse
Funny the views suffer for such a high quality interview. I hope the producers aren’t metric driven. It’s just the usual outrage pr0n crowd isn’t getting their fix about how the Constitution is sucks and we need a revolution. When nuanced discussion comes, views evaporate.
I agree with Sizwe 100% on this. There is definitely a credibility issue. Zuma eroded so much confidence in not just investment but also in the people of South Africa by destroying the integrity of our institutions. Now MK party has all the Architects of State Capture under one flag. Very interesting times ahead.
I believe we should get rid of capitalism and democracy which will destroy governance and people will govern themselves and secure themselves 😢 this is too much haii
On wealth tax - that sounded like more deflection than a proper discussion on the options. But I'm not surprised from a former Clinton economic hitman... erm, I mean advisor
No we not drifting towards faith in government, a center right party and a complete restructuring of the political class and this social democratic state being removed will be a great start! The DA wanting to be this center right party isn’t it
This interview is really eye opening👀…it’s great…there’s a problem that Orania is gonna dodge & it may provide some true security for the wealthy as a safe haven for their wealth…they see it coming…🫢🤔

"There was more history than philosophical debate of where we want this country to go"
Very insightful. Thank you
Thank you!
Your choice of discussion topics is impeccable, Sizwe.
Yes!
Very important conversation. Thanks for digging in.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Bra. Sizwe Bring this guy back man we need 2 hours of this marveling at his brilliance 32:36 damn what a guy.
@@khethelomemela1942 Agreed
This guy better be a regular on economic view of South Africa for us as viewers
Pay Ceaser what Ceaser is due. Not what Ceaser demands. The double and triple taxation is ridiculous.
As a tax person I enjoyed this episode. Let’s have more of these and perhaps we can educate the citizens on their responsibility
Even Seniors pensioners are forced to GST .Every item of food item is taxed .Bank transactions are taxed ..Disgusting!!
More guys like this in future PLEASE. He spoke briefly with great clarity.
It’s refreshing to hear a view from an unbiased source.
We need AYABONGA CAWE PLEASE , PLEASE

Thank you!
This conversation makes me wish that the government was rin by technicians, without interference from politicians.
@@sammakwela what a great comment

You need to have him back and have a full length episode and really dig in - was very interesting but feels like a sneak peek!
There's too much money hidden in sofas in SA. How this money moves around without detection from SARS is baffling. 😓
Yes filling the comrades pockets, be aware of the comrades.
A thought was triggered in my mind as your guest was speaking about Western revolutions occurring due to tax, and I remembered our very own Bambatha rebellion against tax in the early 1900s... thought I should put it out there.
Learned a lot.that man is knowledgeable.keep up the good work sizwe.

So ifnow the super rich are the gov officials, where did the wealth come from if cupboards were empty when the ANC took over?
Ayi Sizwe ndoda. Your best episode is only 36 mins? Ngeke mfoka Mpofu lungisa lento
Really interesting interview.

Complex topic explained so simple. Great interview 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

I'm planning to enroll for LLM tax lawy, but I'm skeptical about job opportunities.
What an insight I never thought i would know about TAX and its broken in to anyone`s understanding.

Great insights
I wonder how relevant the economic system of Georgism is to the subject matter of the video. Would it aid in improving fair taxation?
50% tax and lose my healthcare, eish I would have to really consider leaving.
Ministers show set an example by declaring and paying their taxes.
Or they could just lower them...
Interesting topic , tax system
lets educate the state on the slow speed or mostly lack of delivery to tax paying citizens.
I wish people could read the history of taxation and the surreptitious functions of tax laws. Ordinary man is paying tax they are not liable for, you have to understand keywords
Tax = tribute ( to who?)
Income = trade earnings ( for businesses not natural beings)
Employer = Master
Employee = servant
Vat = tax for vendors ( not natural persons) etc…

The history of taxation as a concept is an interesting topic. Nothing but pure thuggery.
Nationalisation is the key!
Great stuff
read up on the technical principles of MMT
The ANC is gone and finished and Cyril he loves to promise empty promises keeps people holding up high on nothing just empty and while things getting worse
Let's watch President Zuma, we'll come back here as loyalists.

Is he talking today?
"The coffers were empty"😢Mense lost the plot they were coming alright until greed and popularity contests became order of the day!!

SARS should start by auditing Dali Mpofu and his EFF buddies.
No to NHI
So he is an American 😂. Interesting.
Minor lag of the sound. Otherwise, informative 👌🏾
Um..... That arrangement behind you looks like a really big affro. When they use the camera looking straight at you.

You should think again about Mr Gucci Malema he will not give up his lifestyle easily someone has to fund it and what better than taxpayers money.
Yip it certainly will, and great for the Mercedes, BMW and Mr Saunders KFC industry.
