They're programmed to record the highest speed they mechanically can, simply because they aren't programmed with a limiter.
They gather the data from some sort of "re-bound" of the moving object (idk, I'm not familiar with this type of science in physics), and the highest they can record is "400" because past that the "re-bound" fails to get recorded.
Also Sonic wasn't even moving at top speed, as his speed is basically unlimited. 300mph is probably just how fast he is when he's doing normal things like playing pingpong with himself or something
The funniest part to me is Jeremy’s sin about Sonic becoming a ball because he’s not sure if that’s a thing from the games or not. Like, are you kidding? Sonic rolling into a ball is literally his main gameplay mechanic. He does it when he jumps, when he rolls, when he spindashes, etc. All I’m saying is, when the Mario movie comes out, he’d better sin a scene where Mario jumps on an enemy because “That may be a thing in the games but I don’t know.”
Also, he's a HEDGEHOG! They roll into spiky balls for defense. I'd be surprised if he DIDN'T turn into a ball.

One: Jeremy, the trope that you sinned in the beginning is called “starting in medias res,” which means “starting in the middle of things.” This is used to gain the audience’s excitement for the story about to be told by starting in the middle of the action and then explaining how they got there. It has been used for literally thousands of years, as Greek storytellers used it to start their vocally-told epics. THIS HAS PRACTICALLY BEEN AROUND SINCE FOREVER AND IS COMMON IN BOTH TRADITIONAL LITERATURE AND MODERN STORYTELLING (SUCH AS MOVIES), AND YOU SIN IT LIKE IT’S SOMETHING ONLY SONIC HAS DONE.

Jeremy apparently never realized that the actual definition of “alien” is a foreigner, meaning that aliens are not just space creatures. Historically, before the whole space craze in 50’s and 60’s, the term alien was used to describe someone not from your country. So even if, according to Jeremy, Tom assumed Sonic was from a weird part of Earth...he’d still technically be right to assume he’s an ALIEN!

I just can't get over how he calls movies mediocre or plays off like they're so below him he can't even google a basic fact and just assumes the movie got it wrong and yet he keeps getting confused at the plot.

The whole premise behind CinemaSins is supposed to be that they pay SO much attention to movies that they pick up on little things no one else would notice, like continuity errors, but these days it seems like the complete opposite: Jeremy _misses_ things that would be obvious to anyone who actually watched the movie instead of zoning out while it played in front of them, and then he blames the movie itself for it.

12:40 I'm sure that scene made more sense with Sonic's old design where he had some less cartoony facial features, his eyes were small enough to fit behind the sunglasses for example. This is further strengthened by Tom's line where he tries to say it's a facial deformity, the way he says it could be that he's trying to guilt the waitress and make her feel like she shouldn't pry on what could be a very sensitive topic. Remember the manhog comments towards the old design? I'm sure it was designed like that on purpose so he could be mistaken for an odd looking child from a distance.

New fan and really enjoying going through the back catalog. I watched Sins a long time ago, but stopped because as you point out a lot, he's just sinning things for the sake of having high numbers now and is just a dick that attacks good movies to get a reaction from people defending it and raise his viewcount.
Anyways, regarding the vet GF having human smelling salts in her medical kit. I remember reading a (reddit?) post a while back from a veterinarian, that was answering why people that get shot in movies always go to a vet. Besides actual doctors legally having to report treating gunshots, they also said that vets actually use a LOT of human drugs/medical instruments, because companies don't make animal-specific versions of many tools. So they use human instruments and just modify them to work how they need. So her having common human drugs in her kit is actually completely normal. Another factor of why vets are better in emergency conditions is that animals have significantly weaker systems and very easily go into shock, so vets are trained to be much more delicate during surgery, as well as dealing as little additional damage as possible during the surgery, since animals heal much slower than humans. So if you need someone to remove a bullet in back-alley conditions without killing you, a vet is actually your best choice.

Writer speaking here: Starting a story from the end (or the middle) and then going back to the start of the story is called "in medias res" (eng. "In the middle of things"). This writing technique has been used for thousands of years and creates suspense as well as interest in the view/reader which it clearly is doing here. After all, who doesn't look at the start of the movie and ask how things have gotten this way? Why are things exploding? What is Sonic running from? etc.
Calling "in medias res" lazy is the same as calling "Chekhov's gun" or "show don't tell" lazy

This movie was far better than it had any right to be :) While I did feel that Sonic's speed fluctuated a bit during the movie - I didn't care because I was having F U N, and I feel like Cinemasins doesn't get that joy anymore.

I love Cinemasins, but I miss when they would sin actual mistakes in the movie like disappearing props or magically changing clothes instead of focusing on criticizing the screen writers and the the plot of the movie. It feels like more of a movie review than a mistake review like they used to be.
