  • Today we share how to install a bathtub in a basement bathroom. Our prior videos showed how to prep and self level the concrete floor, which made this installation much easier.

Step one is to dry fit the bathtub. This basement bathroom was self leveled in our prior videos. As a result, our bathtub was perfectly level - but it's always good to double check.
Step two is to install the cable bath drain. Use 100% silicone to adhere the rubber gasket and drain to the tub.
Step three is to dry fit the pipe and slip fitting into the P-Trap. Then dry fit the bathtub again to see how it's drain lines up with the P-Trap pipe.
Step four is to glue all the PVC floor pipes and pour mortar on the basement floor.
Step five is to set the bathtub in the mortar, drill holes through the tub lip, and secure the tub to studs using galvanized screws.

Those acrylic tubs really have a lot of flex. Great idea putting a mortar bed down to support the tub.

Thank you, much more solid with mortar. We used Hydro Ban Board for walls and really liked it, going to have a tutorial on that soon

can't install slip joint fittings unless it's accessible. All glue joint fittings are needed in this situation.

This is great! I’m prepping the base floor for my tub install. Should the floor under the tub be at the same level as the rest of the floor in the bathroom? I’m also working on a basement bathroom

Slip joint connections are illegal in most states when installed in an inaccessible area. Due to risk of leaks. Drain assembly and trap should be glue fittings. Also connecting a drain assembly to a tub should not be silicone, should be plumbers putty with pipe dope on your threads.

Hey guys, what does Steve charge typically for a project like this? Assuming the existing construction is ready to go and there isn’t a ton of extra labor.

Thanks for the video. Question, I removed my old tub and because of how it sat there wasn’t really a way to see what the existing looked like until I got it out. It’s a brass drain assembly that connects to a steel. The steel drain pipe is actually sheered off and barely attached. Do I need to attach a metal drain assembly kit to the existing steel pipe? And I now need to cut that pipe where it broke.

Thank you, in that instance we'd self level just the tub area. Add a 2x4 to block off the tub area from the rest of the bathroom, apply latex acrylic caulk along the new 2x4 and existing 2x4 framing. Also add a 1/8" piece of foam along that perimeter and temporarily recess a piece of wood over the hole in the floor (also seal that with caulk). Then apply a floor leveler and let it sit overnight. That'll help level the tub area

Moved into a '79 house 2 years ago and decided to redo the basement bathroom. I'm down to the studs and concrete and noticed that the walls were framed using 2x2s. I want to put in a bathtub but not sure if the 2x2s will give it enough support. Any suggestions? Assuming reframing with 2x4s is not an option since the rough-in drains are positioned according to the 2x2 walls.

It's under the cement. You can partially see it around 4:45. In a basement it's installed during groundworks before the basement is poured.

I found the plumbing shoping tip ok. As far as choice of fittings. But totally disappointed with your choice to by pass extra cross wood supports and simply suggesting a level check at each attachment of screws in predrill holes, "and be sure not to push to hard". Yeah thats a crap plastic tub. It can bearly hold water. So stop installing decorative fixtures not ment to really be used. I came here because, i had a co. (Belflor) install a acrylic tub in a rental for me while out of state. They said they would back their work. .....later i was told 30 days is how long they garenteed. An insurance job. Tile shower with glass doors t to arylic tub and surround. Price $12,000. This was a bare bones deal. That they destroyed. Overcut holes needed to special order rings to hide, went through walls by mistake, leaving patch jobs to drywall in adjoining rooms. Overtightened screws from tub to wall leaving hole in tub. The surround panels were 1 inch uneven on one wall. Told it was a "beadless seam" because they knew the gap was to large to silicone. Anyway. $12,000. 30 day garentee. No one wants to replace their bathroom every 30 days for $1200. Those plastic tubs look great, grab your mobey and haul ass before the owner fills it with water and ACTUALLY TRYS TO TAKE A BATH. hairline cracks at all scews, bad ones will pull through a hole. Please make your video great, not fake and ADD supports. Yes you need to make up for the tub not being enamal, or porcelain. Dont just be a plumber, add in the extra carpentry for support. And a pile of mortars or concrete. Not a good enough to support bottom. Homeowers everywhere, buying epoy, fiberglass, trying to cut out walls to add spray foam for support. Because WE ARENT going to call you back to pay another $1200. And i wouldnt call you to fix cracked tub....for a "you dont need that answer" = another video of work that's pretty enough to get paid, but disappear quick! Throw a 2x4 behind that back edge. Then we can talk. Btw Kohler doesnt recommend supporting their tub that way. So hide the instructions, if your not going to order a recommended support thats not included and going to call that mess pile standard. Its not even code in many areas. Yeah be helpful and just cut the clip after you demonstrate the quick connection fitging and dry fit the tub tbe 2nd time.

Those cable drains are the stupidest and shittiest plumbing assemblies ever devised...A toe tap drain is the best drain for tubs... Just sayin. And You "painted yourself into a corner" when you leave no access to the back of the tub...It's poor planning...
